The Sales Growth of Fragrance Isn’t Sustainable but It Sure Is a Fun Ride

As we’ve grown more and more used to being less in contact with people our normal idea of beauty has altered. Wearing our favorite red lipstick has become a thing of the past has a mask hides our mouth or doing a full face of makeup only to work from home isn’t really in the cards for a lot of us.

But no one, no one saw the boom in fragrance that came last year. The NPD Group, an American market research company, noticed that the fragrance category had an 82% growth spurt the past year.

Fragrance doesn’t exactly fall into the self-care revolution we saw during COVID but it was an escape for some consumers and it drove sales way up as shoppers purchased larger bottles of new and fond favorites. Sales reached an incredibly high which many brands took full advantage of by relaunching scents with newer formulations and campaigns for popular fragrances like Miss Dior who’s legendary formula changed still strikes conversation in lovers of the original juice.

The method behind the madness is that consumers just wanted to “treat” themselves which encouraged such dramatic growth in this category.

As a lover of fragrance who’s very passionate about the topic, I thought this was an interesting marketing study. I personally blame Tiktok as well with many creators pimping our higher-end, luxury houses like Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Kilian, Tom Ford, and more.

The real question that begs to be answered would be, “Is the growth sustainable?” Sadly, it’s probably just a rapid growth spurt that will return back to its original growth as we return to normal life more and more and makeup takes more of a dominant step in the industry once again. Already the high took a little bit of a plunge according to NPD Group’s research.

As someone who is incredibly passionate about fragrance, I love people are perhaps discovering it for the first time or even nurturing their own love of it in a new way. I’d love to see further growth because it does give the industry more of a foothold to create newer scents or even bring back formulas long gone. But sadly, I have doubts this will last and marketing research shows the same.

It’s interesting to see growth in this category though.

Did you purchase more fragrances during the pandemic? Did you find yourself indulging in new scents?

I’ve always loved fragrance – going back to junior high and high school days when I’d buy knock offs of designer scents or ask for one nice bottle of perfume for a birthday gift – I still miss Dior’s Tendre Poison and loved Obsession and the original Opium, which one of my mother’s friends used. It seemed so fancy 😉 I have bought more or experimented more during the pandemic – sampler sets from brands I’m not as familiar with like Penhaligons, Maison Francis Kurkdjian. I find I like smaller bottles as they allow me to try more scents and have some variety.

Likewise. I’ve always had a passion for it. I remember my first real bottle was Sunflower! Which I still love haha! Those smaller sampler sets are a god scent especially when messing with houses like penhaligons and mfk! They really do help you to make solid choices and invest your money properly 🙂

Ive loved some of the travel sizes or discovery sets, Commodity, Bastide, Phlur, Jardins dHermes, Nest, Berdoues, etc. and some pointer samples of mens from Sephora or Nordies. What Im finding is that some of my old classics, notably LAir du Temps, Jicky, Coriander, Chanel #22, Dune, and Niki de Saint Phalle are gonebut I have so many others to love. OG Miss Dior was one of my mums, whereas mine was Dioressence, greener. My preferences do not run with todays favorites, so Ive only sprung for a few you-know-which-house through Cosbar. Gotta check on some Matriarch and bpal, though. The most compliments are for Terre dHermes..though its probably for the scent itself, rather than on me.

Thats really interesting bc I def was into fragrance wayyyyy more the past several months than Ive ever been. Funnily enough I wasnt influenced by social media or Instagram or anything – I just wanted to smell good so I fell down the rabbit hole by getting some 7 virtue fragrances, followed by replica then byredo and then jo Malone. I purchased 4 byredos and 1 jo Malone all writhing 2 months Currently eyeing a kilian during Sephora sale and maybe pick up AG cloud

I became obsessed with fragrances during the pandemic , it was my escape from madness. But unfortunately have developed out of nowhere chronic hives last December that came with strong allergic reaction to any perfume. I still continued to build my collection hoping that my perfume allergy and hives will be over soon and I will enjoy my scents again as I did before. But unfortunately for now I still struggle with chronic hives and can not handle any perfume at all. I look at my 70+ collection of bottles every day dreaming of a day when this nightmare will be over and I will feel like a woman again smelling beautifully using all my Perfumes.

Oh no I’m so so sorry to hear that 🙁 I had a really bad cold about three years ago and sadly, I was unable to stand perfume! It was such a sad time! I got over it thankfully but not being about to use fragrance at the time was so sad! I hope things will change for you!

I did purchase more fragrance during the pandemic but I’ve always loved fragrance.

I love wearing fragrances, but I work in an intensely scent-free office where someone was actually sent home because someone else had a problem with the smell of her shampoo, so I have refrained from wearing fragrances for the last four years. With the pandemic, I’ve been WFH since March 2020, so I’ve been rediscovering the joys of fragrance. Having read about the horrors of phthalates in most fragrances, I’ve been exploring non-toxic scents like Ellis Brooklyn and Good Chemistry.

I heard about this the other day and thought it was really interesting! I’ve always loved fragrance but didn’t really dive into it that much until the world went upside down. It just gives comfort and it has been fun experimenting with new ones. No social media to drive me. I started with the little Maison Margella and Ellis Brooklyn samplers and tend to rotate around depending on how I feel. I also feel like I wear things for myself now too.

I’ve always gone in and out on fragrance interest and I did have an uptick of actual blind buys during the pandemic. I’d be curious if home fragrance sales went up too, candles, diffusers, etc? I think I saw somewhere that bespoke incense sales were up. It cracks me up that sales of shampoo went down as well. Maybe not unrelated hahahah!

I purchased a Juicy perfume on a whim because it was on sale but even though I tried to test all my perfumes and samples during quarantine, I would just lose interest… or get a headache. I don’t think fragrance is really for me but I still hope to find one I can be loyal to so I’ll wear it regularly without having to think about it. I still like perfumes best on other people.

I know some people are going out maskless but I’m not. I miss wearing lip color. Everything is going to waste and you know it expires the fastest (aside from mascara). Sigh…

I have been into fragrance . . . since forever, but got heavily into it a few years ago (pre-pandemic) and, just like you say, it was a sanity saver. I gave up putting on makeup or wearing nice clothes but picking out and wearing perfume every day made me feel a little bit normal. Not sure if I personally bought more during the pandemic (I’ve been buying too much relative to what I already own for a while, sigh) but that was definitely happening worldwide. I went into ScentBar downtown (NYC) in the early summer and the guy told me there he’d been busy — people looking for something to do and also many who had been watching YouTube videos during lockdown and got into fragrance that way.
