Paula’s Choice Going Public Later This Year is a Thing Now

You may have read my Instagram post over the weekend that Paulas Choice may be going public later this year. In 2016, TA Associates acquired Paula’s Choice which created quite a bit of controversy over the years. As we all know Paula was really in favor of simplicity when it came to skincare routines. I mean, the woman believed you could use your regular facial moisturizer under your eyes! No need for extra eye cream!

But look at Paula’s Choice now a few years after TA Associates take over we have a number of different eye creams available for purchase. This is in fact what causes such an uproar in the skincare community. They felt that prices went up and Paula’s simple skincare routine with an occasional round of strong actives suddenly became overwhelming. And if we’re being real here, it’s true….Paula’s Choice releases new products quite often lately within weeks of each other.

Paula’s Choice was always a very state of the art skincare line without a lot of flash and hype. That’s changed dramatically over the years as the migrated more and more towards social platforms like Instagram. With that social migration you could see how things became more “insta-looking”. There latest 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel is iridescent purple…! Eep…! I feel like Paula would not approve.

The choice to go public has apparently has not been confirmed as of yet and TA Associates has not responded to requests for comments on the status. I do think the fact they are now sold at Sephora hinted at things to come. The brand has always been notoriously selective about where they are being sold. To me, taking on Sephora automatically meant they’ll start popping up at many other retailers at all. That was some clue that going public was next on the agenda.

The way skincare is having it’s moment in the sun lately it comes as no surprise that brands and firms like TA Associates are looking for ways to exploit that and make more money.

I’ll update you on Paula’s Choice public status as more news becomes available.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. As far as non-eye cream moisturizer under the eyes, if it’s rich and well-formulated, I don’t see an issue.
As a Chemist, I appreciate her well-made, well-researched, well-formulated products that don’t irritate my rosacea skin, her basic skincare philosophy is spot on.
I do agree that the amount of new releases does seem more like a money grab more than anything else. How many different ways can you re-package the mostly same products over and over again? Simplicity is best.

I don’t see any issue with it either. I don’t personally do it because I found the texture of eye creams are a bit better formulated for eye use (some of the moisturizers I use are very thick and heavy and can cause milia which is why I don’t use them under my eyes)! Simple is best 🙂

I get the feeling that Paula has relatively little involvement with the company these days. She is no longer prominently featured on their website or social media. She doesn’t do the Q&As on Facebook or Youtube.
I’ve used PC from the beginning, but the skyrocketing price point and OVERWHELMING number of products are so contradictory to her original philosophy.
The near-death of Beautypedia is especially disappointing. The reviews are terribly out of date, and new reviews are rare, and bizarrely random. The reviews you do get often deviate from her criteria (high marks for products that are crazy expensive, have fragrance, etc.). I lol at angry comments about “Paula’s” reviews. For long-time Paula fans, it’s been obvious she wasn’t writing the reviews for years! I guess it’s not surprising, but I’m sad to see a useful resource go away. I still use the core products in the CALM line, which are excellent for my rosacea.

Absolutely agreed. They have a dermatologist that does Q&A on IG but it isn’t really even Q&A just discussions about certain products. They’ve changed considerably over the years but the main change is price point. I think they still have a very solid product line but beautypedia is a big mess and very out of date. It’s pretty sad and my concern is once it goes public will it get worst?!

      • AH

At one time, there were rumors of PC going under, so I’m glad it’s still around. But when the current CEO said it was in “dire need of a reboot”, I knew that wasn’t good news for the old-timers like me. If it goes public, I guess they will continue positioning it as a rival to Drunk Elephant, though that could be tough without Shiseido’s deep pockets. I wonder if they’ve tried and failed to sell it to one of the big-name conglomerates? I’d like to see Beautypedia sold to someone who would operate it like Wirecutter, with independent reviews funded by affiliate links. Better than what it is now. I’ve wondered if Paula would go the Bobbi Brown route and pursue other ventures. Doesn’t look like it.

I don’t like reviews with affiliate links. Never seems truly sincere.

          • Isabella Muse

I use affiliate links all the time. I just make sure I’m honest and upfront about the product I’m reviewing.

          • AH

I prefer affiliate links over paywalls, though I would pay a subscription if they updated and actively maintained the site. Right now there are too many discontinued products, and new reviews are too rare and too niche. I’m skeptical that anything will change, because the philosophy of PC’s current ownership isn’t compatible with informing people about another company’s products.

I so agree with everything you just said. I used PC from the outset until they were bought out – or from my perspective – sold out. Suddenly there were all sorts of things that you *know* Paula would never have recommended and her products skyrocketed in price and started adding ingredients that are simply unnecessary. I dropped them after that. Makes me sad that *everything* gets ruined by a money grab.

      • AH

I don’t know that her intent was to sell out. In an interview, Paula said that the company got too big for her to manage. Seems like that’s what usually happens. Jeanine Lobell said the same about Stila. (What happened to that brand was criminal, but I digress.) I wish Paula could have sold to a group that didn’t stray so far from the company’s origins and ethos. Or I wish she had sold, but not stepped so far back from it. Perhaps my hopes were unrealistic.

Can’t say I’m surprised. Paula and her concepts made me realize why decades of HE skincare made me worse. I think it’s coincidental that I migrated to Asian about the time PC started to bulge. Ironically, bec of Paula. Thanks for concepts, knowledge about ingredients, Cosdna, EWG, Incidecoder. Knowing what to rule out was the major impact. I can spot a chemical sunscreen, a silicone, an occlusive, or a ~ene at 20 paces. Sorry about the public offering.

For over ten years, I’ve been a loyal PC customer. My skincare regimen consisted of largely PC products. I checked the Beautypedia before buying any skincare and makeup products. I became an informed beauty consumer and was able to successfully get my adult acne under control without the help of a derm thanks to Beautypedia. I feel kinda sad that my favorite brand has morphed into just another beauty brand. I’d rather have a scientifically proven product that works than an Instagram worthy product with questionable reliability.

    • Isabella Muse

I still think they have excellent products without a doubt it’s just that prices have changed and releases are very frequent!

    • AH

I feel the same. In the 90s, I was a 20-something with acne, despite using the products my derm recommended. Paula’s books and original product line changed my life. I switched to Calm when rosacea became an issue for me. For someone with sensitive skin, Paula’s/Beautypedia’s ingredient-centered reviews were so helpful. I, too, hate to see it become just another beauty brand. I’d be happy to go back to the plain jane packaging. I guess that wasn’t Paula’s vision for the company.

I have bought Paula’s Choice since Day 1. I pretty stick to my tried and true basics and hope that going public doesn’t change things too much.

    • Isabella Muse

I hope going public doesn’t mean changes either! I love the brand as is!
