Sephora Inside Kohl’s Looks Just Like Sephora Inside JCPenny

The new Sephora locations located inside Kohl’s have been revealed on WWD.com and things are looking a lot like JCPenny to me. As you know Sephora went live on kohls.com several days ago and the first Sephora inside Kohl’s opened in Ramsey, New Jersey this past Friday with over 2500 square feet of shopping space.

Kohl’s has 1162 stores across the USA and aim to bring Sephora to many of those locations. The goal of the Sephora locations at Kohl’s was to make the store feel apart from Kohl’s and like a freestanding store all its own with its own entrance. However, from the photos I’m seeing it looks pretty much like any Sephora JCPenny store I’ve come across. That being said it does look like it has a lot more space. I do know this new move has really ruined the beauty section for Kohl’s in my opinion as many of the brands they used to carry such as Lorac are long gone and I imagine that’s due to their current contract with Sephora. I have doubts Kohl’s will improve upon their beauty section in the future and it may very well be gone at some point as not to be in direct competition with brands that Sephora carries.

Along with its own entrance these new pop-up Sephora locations in Kohl’s will have 15 Kohl employees that will man the store that have been trained by Sephora. The locations will offer 125 different brands with selections available across all categories of beauty such as makeup, fragrance, skincare, and haircare.

I’m personally unimpressed and looking forward to Target and Ulta’s collaboration as we near closer to the Fall and I’m sure we’ll see photos of the locations as they start to pop up! I just find the relationship of Kohl’s and Sephora an odd one! I’ve felt the same about the one they shared with JCPenny. As of now JCPenny locations remained untouched but I’m sure with the new year those locations will likely shut down to make room for growth with their new Kohl stores. We’ll see how that pans out.

What do you think of these photos?

Are the Sephora Kohl’s stores everything you imagined?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I had an epiphany about a year ago.Sephora sucks in ways so hard we need another word for sucks. For some time before that, I had been getting more and more turned off by their naked cash grabs. The rewards system, the amount of money you needed to spend to maintain a certain status, etc. I had been VIB Rouge since Noah built the ark but I decided to let in lapse. At first it was just exhaustion with Sephora combined with exhaustion for the beauty world in general. As time went by I shopped my stash more and more. And then I realized just how much makeup and skincare I had. Way more than any one person could reasonably use. There was nothing new or exciting in the world of beauty and I got burned out. Would it make any difference that the eyeshadow palette I was using was a lower end brand or the newest Tom Ford? And of course the resounding answer was no. I also realized that if there was something new or exciting I could buy it somewhere else. So I ended my relationship with Sephora. I unsubscribed from their 500 daily emails and havent even browsed their site in so long I no longer have it bookmarked. I dont miss it at all. The only time I ever give them a passing thought is when I read a blog post about them. Its been truly liberating and satisfying.

Having said all of that, I mean no disrespect or shade to those that continue to shop with them. Especially bloggers like yourself Muse. Thats an entirely different category than the casual shopper like myself.

Thank you for allowing the space for my rant

I still love Sephora but totally get the hate factor of it all. The reward system sucks especially as a Rouge Member. And I totally respect your choice to unsubscribe from all those newsletter! The newsletters seriously causing major shopping frenzy! You did a smart thing ditching them! Good on you! and you always have a safe space to rant here!

Bingo. You probably TRIED to ding Rouge, but had it renewed regardless of low to no-balling them! Me, too. S is no longer on my iPad tiles, unsubscribed, etc. If Muse or Christine rave something, then Ill check it out. Still howlin/cryin about a new word for sucks. I have a saying The problem isnt who they are, its who they think they are. When big S landed stateside, I thought Id died and gone to m/u heaven. Now, they have very little thats unique and I feel disrespected by their tactics and policies. Effabuncha Sephora. Done.

Meh youre right it looks just like the ones in JCP. But – itll be nice to have them. On another site a lady who works for kohls said that every store that has 2 entrances will be getting a Sephora eventually. That is good news for folks in less populous areas hat wouldnt otherwise have access to a Sephora of any kind. And there are a lot more kohls stores than JCP stores anymore so they will be more accessible. So its good, but Sephora still needs to up its game if its going to compete with Ulta.

This is so convenient because I already have a jcpenney and kohl’s at the shopping center I work at. The nearest stand alone store is a twenty-five minute drive to another (more busy) mall. I really hope they follow through with more openings.

I put in my rant. Now heres my question. S lines replaced/took over Kohls online beauty. So what will happen to the beauty products in the stores that do NOT get a Sephora?

It is disappointing to see that Sephora in Kohls is going to look like the one in JcPenney. I was hoping it would look like a free standing Sephora or maybe a little bit different. I never really enjoyed going to Sephora in JcPenney because it did not have the Sephora feel. It did not make sense to me that you could not return items from a regular Sephora to a JcPenney Sephora. Hopefully it will not be like that with the Sephora/Kohls partnership. I must say though that I love Sephora. It is one of the few places where you can go and browse makeup and fragrance in peace. If you need help you can ask someone but no one is following you around or trying to upsell you on a product. I know that it is their job because I worked in department store cosmetics. I know this will show my age but before Sephora the only option for makeup was the department store or a drugstore. If I was curious about a new release I would go to the department store to check it out only to be asked a million times if I wanted to buy this or that or whatever and then Sephora came along and I could go and look and smell without feeling like I was intruding. TBH, it was liberating. Then Ulta came along and had both drugstore and high end and some Ulta’s even had testers and you could take back or exchange the makeup!! That was amazing. Before Ulta and Sephora, drugstores and department stores, it was soooo difficult to take back makeup that did not work or was the wrong shade. Sorry for the long comment.

    Its JC Penney.

I also dont think that space you see in the last pic will last for 5 minutes under a Kohls roof because Heaven forbid they should not have every bit of floor space covered with racks.

What did you expect? Their layout is literally the same as the modern layout for Freestanding stores. Down to the lightbulbs, tiles, walls, fixturings, and check out area. They were aiming for a more off-mall, suburban approach. To compete, from what I’ve read.. And that’s what they did I believe. Maybe they didn’t want to collaborate with a store where you can buy diapers, dog food and toilet paper, like Ulta and Target..? I find the latter partnership to be severely underwhelming compared to this! I’ve visited both. I was impressed w/ the quality of service and knowledge I got at Sephora at Kohl’s.

I think this Sephora in Kohl’s is ridiculous. Gone is the Kohl’s jewelry department. No more watches too. No more Fitbits, no discount s whatsoever in the entire store.

As a long time customer, I am completely done with Kohl’s.
I hope this Sephora thing bites them in the ass!
