A Near Death Experience with Dior Vanilla Diorama

Perfumes that simply don’t work or turn on your skin are well known as being “scrubbers” in the perfume community. It’s fairly common to hear people saying things like “Flower Bomb was a real scrubber for me!” It happens sometimes, doesn’t it? Especially if you blind buy a fragrance online!

For me, my last perfume scrubber was Dior Vanilla Diorama. I waited so patiently for the release of this scent in the US because I was convinced it was going to be some luscious vanilla. It launched in 2021 but Dior’s website didn’t get it for several months and finally around October or November it was available and it was an insta-buy for me. I really was going to wait as we had plans to go to Paris this Spring (now I’m being all anxious about the new variant) and I had visions of sniffing it and purchasing it while I was there. But I was impatient and grabbed it from Dior’s website. Thankfully someone was watching out for me that day though because instead of indulging in a 4.25 oz $260 bottle I conservatively purchased a 1.5 oz $110 bottle. And believe me, it was sort of hard going with that smaller bottle because I was convinced I was making a huge mistake by going small. As a massive Feve Delicieuse fan girl I was convinced that Vanilla Diorama was going to be just as delightful, just as exotic, just as delicious…

I mean, this is a fragrance that was paying homage to the Diorama Gourmand (apparently it was Christian’s fav dessert and exclusively his own created by Maxim’s). Surely that would mean it was an incredible gourmand right?

Not so much.

This literally made me sick. No, but seriously, it did. When I got my box I ripped it open with my teeth and out tumbled my treasure. A gorgeous heavy cylinder glass bottle containing a golden-hued juice. At first, I didn’t even want to open it. I just wanted to stroke it and tell it how special it was to me. After the initial excitement wore down I decided I’d use it on a special night and not before that. But after a few hours of it sitting happily on my vanity, I decided I had to spray it on. And I did. A tiny little squirt.

And I fell deathly ill.

It literally made me vomit-y. I had the worst headache from it. I had to lie down for an hour. I remember I kept trying to scrub it off (it was literally a scrubber) with a wet soapy washcloth but the scent lingered on. I stripped out of my clothes and laid down. I was too weak to get to the shower. It was seriously the weirdest experience of my life with perfume. I mean, I’ve had headaches from scents before but nothing like this.

To this day I can’t open the bottle without getting a migraine. It really isn’t the warm, vanilla experience I had hoped for. To me, it smells like really weird incense vanilla almost like an Airwick or Glade vanilla. It’s supposed to have notes of Madagascar Vanilla with accents of rum and patchouli with hints of cocoa and orange and a touch of amber but to me, it’s full-on incense-y vanilla.

I’ve kept the bottle around in the hopes that I could mix it with another vanilla or even grow to love it but thus far anytime I open the bottle I can feel my head start to pound. It’ll probably be gifted to a friend or my mom who might enjoy it but this is one scent that’s a scrubber for me.

How about you?

What are your recent perfume scrubbers?

Anything that’s given you a huge headache or made you feel a bit weird after smelling it?

I haven’t been able to find it, but it sounds like something i would like! I should check around and see if the perfume sampler sites have it to sample… From your description it sounds like it’;d be right up my vanilla alley!

Ok, that sounded kinda perverse…. Didn’t mean for it to!! My bad….

  • Swoozy

I used to travel a lot through Europe and the Mideast and spent a lot of time sniffing duty free testers. Loved Hermes Eau d’Orange Vert and Citron Noir, but never bought them. Bought bottles a few weeks ago. Neither was quite a scrubber (citron noir nearly so), but when I sprayed Orange Vert, I couldn’t recall what about the scent had once so entranced me as it seemed very pedestrian. So now I have two huge 3.4oz bottles (the smallest size I could get) and not sure what to do.

    • Isabella Muse

No offense at all but Hermes Eau d’Orange Vert and Citron Noir always seemed worthy of small bottle purchases for me. Funny you mention it as I think I got both at duty-free! I think Hermes and Europe together made for a weird spontaneous purchase at the time! I have 3.4 oz bottles and I question why as I haul them out so rarely and yes, very much pedestrian! I’d recommend putting them at the front of your stash for Spring. Both are quite nice, light scents for the cool yet warm weather we get in the Spring! I’m so done with mainstream luxury! I’d rather drop big money on niche versus spending $200+ on a luxury house like Dior or Hermes and just smelling like the rest of the world.

      • Isabella Muse

P.S. That was my inner fragrance snob speaking above! Forgive her!

        • Swoozy

Lol. All forgiven! I got them on Frangrancenet, so at least my wallet isn’t too pained!

  • MM

Now I’m curious! Not for the side effects, but just to see for myself

    • Isabella Muse

user beware lol! It was just not good for me! Weird trippy nauseated feeling!

  • Nydia Alicea

I had a similar experience with Samsara when it came out eons ago. Just thinking about it makes me feel !

    • Isabella Muse

I have the same weird thing that even if I think about this I start feeling nauseated!

  • Gail

Wow, happy to report I’ve never had a reaction even close to that!

And I just know I’d have gotten sucked in to ordering the big bottle. Most of those ingredients sound so magic – well, aside from patchouli which I sometimes react to! But tell me this: chocolate in that mix? My brain is seeing it as odd and maybe overwhelming. Can you see it?

    • Isabella Muse

I’m not terribly overwhelmed by chocolate in scents. Guerlain Elixir Charnel Gourmand Coquin comes across as blended to perfection or Montale’s Chocolate Greedy, another excellently crafted chocolate scent that doesn’t go too hard on the note. I think what happened here might be they produced vanilla with a more woodsy, boozy element that went a little darker than the more traditional gourmand. It’s very Angel or FB in nature (not smelling the same but the overwhelming feeling it produces! Mugler is particularly guilty of “this is a gourmand” and creating an absolute beast of a fragrance.). You get that very heady feel from it. Like being on a trip you didn’t actually drop the tab for.

  • Crystal

Swoozy , is right above, about luxury being too mainstream. Better of spending the money on a nice niche!

    • Isabella Muse

I agree 100%. Luxury can def pull a person in but niche is def more unique!

The Bacarat Rouge regular makes me feel kind of ill and headache-y by the end of the day, for whatever reason the extrait doesn’t seem to have same impact. I used the extrait fairly extensively without problem, got the sample of the regular and had issues, now am wary of both. Thankfully they were both just bootleg samples, I am too afraid to go for full size with either and the price tag is further deterrent.

    • Isabella Muse

You’d think the extrait would be the one that did it since the notes are heavier! That’s very curious! Try Cloud or RASASI QASAMAT BAREEQ! Cheaper dupes!

  • Iris

    Very unfortunate about your purchase.

For me, anything with plumeria or pikake gives me headaches without fail.

BPAL’s The Raven smelled like popcorn on me. People said it smelled amazing and I got compliments but it wasn’t what I was going for. Crossroads smelled very weird on me, almost laundry detergent-like.

    • Isabella Muse

Sadly happens when you blind buy 🙁 popcorn really? I get hard violet from it! Oh that’s very interesting because Crossroads smells very clean on me too! Soap-y! Interesting! We have the same body chem haha!

  • Vikki Velvetfur

Wow, that reaction you had is crazy! And a bit worrying, to be honest, that the smell of something that’s not ‘rancid’ or poison (lol, see what I did there?!) could do that to you… I don’t have anything that bad to tell you, but any of the Annick Goutal perfumes turn on me and smell horrible, doesn’t matter which one, they all turn to the same yukky smell on me! I’m sad about that because they all smell so lovely when sprayed on a card and of course the bottles are so pretty, but I just couldn’t buy one. The other perfume that turned on me was Tresor – I put it on (this was many years ago) and set off to walk round to the doc surgery for an appointment. It was a very hot day so I was sweating by the time I reached the doc surgery, and when I sat down I realised I smelled like a wet dog! It was the Tresor, not my own natural scent, honest!! :p

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Vik! Long time no speak how are you? I know. ugh it was yucky! Oh noooo! Annick is a fav of mine lol! But her stuff is def not for everyone that’s for sure 😀 Tresor is such a grandma scent isn’t it? LOL! It’s pretty heavy! HAAAAA I get the wet dog thing from Philosophy’s Amazing Grace. Just does NOT work for me AT ALL!

      • Vikki Velvetfur

Haha, I thought it was just me that was a wet dog, I’m so glad it’s happened to someone else!! Yeah now you mention it Tresor is a bit heavy, from what I remember….. That’s interesting about Amazing Grace though, my sister loves their perfumes. Oh by the way…. I’ve had direct contact with my crush on Insta! We exchanged a few comments on one of their posts! It was just a little experience but it made me happy

My scrubber that I thought I’d love forever was Miss Dior Cherie. Literally gives me the worst headache even though it smells divine. I can’t wear it. It’s spoiled on my vanity.
