Say What Now? LVHM Blames Amazon for Slow Sephora Sales

So, LVHM is over there blaming Amazon for slow Sephora sales. As for me, I’m all, say what now? According to LVHM CFO 2025’s Q1 earnings report was down 3% due to Amazon’s aggressive pricing strategy. Stores are thriving but e-commerce is taking a smaller hit in the US because of Amazon which isn’t actually beating Sephora prices but does match them at the same price. However, that being said select items are showing at better prices on Amazon such as Kérastase’s Gloss Absolu which is sold at Sephora for $36 but on Amazon at $26. Although, they have seen an overall revenue fall the company says they are still feeling very sound during turbulent times and feels sales will improve.

Sephora hasn’t addressed the Spring Savings Event and likely won’t but according to Beauty Independent sales there was a slide in sales during the event this year. They reported that Ulta’s Spring Beauty Haul had more organic traffic than Sephora’s Spring Savings Event and had a decline overall expect in the bath, body, and haircare categories. I know I personally didn’t do a major sale haul this year. I just didn’t find anything of interest I needed or wanted. I also, think the sale came at a rather bad time during the tariff war discussions. Beauty brands are scrambling to figure out how to survive in these uncertain times. Many smaller indie brands are just closing up shop which is sad and even more popular ones from the youTube era are closing down (Glam Glow is one that went down recently).

We’ll have to wait and see if sales improve but I can’t say that Amazon is Sephora’s biggest issue. Ulta being Sephora’s biggest competition with a better cash back rewards program, better sales, and outstanding brand growth (they’ve brought in so many brands in the last five to six years). Also, Tiktok has been a huge source of direct brand purchasing making it easy enough to bypass Sephora completely, buy from the brand direct with free shipping, and sometimes an even cheaper price.

I wish Sephora success but the last few years has been very turbulent for them. I’m still a Sephora girlie but I’ll readily admit the bulk of money spent on beauty isn’t with Sephora lately. I’m curious how things will go in the next few months especially as the Holidays grow closer!

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I wonder if some of it is also due to the massive improvements in the drugstore landscape over the last 5ish years. Seems like ever since Tiktok took off, the drugstore brands have been killing it. The quality has improved and it feels like there’s way less stigma these days around using “cheap” products vs high end. It would make sense that Ulta is crushing sales since they do both high and low end.

I actually disagree. I feel like drugstore makeup has literally stagnant aside from a few brands like E.L.F. Cosmetics. 2016 or so we had such an evolution of drugstore formulas and a huge release of different products but now it’s way less and the formulas have actually gone from being amazing and back to being very hit or miss 🙁

Hmmm I wonder if this is why Sephora has recently relaunched in the UK – desperately trying to grab sales from other territories….?

WMGAS about big S. (That’s watch me give a ****) I always check Amazon after Ulta for a specific product. The Amazon Chase card also gives real $, not deluxe samples. A is upping their Asian game. Save up and you can do some real free damage. Erika Mustermann, my new alias, means Jane Doe in German.

So I never leave comments. Like never. I’ve been following your blog now since the early 2000’s it seems. But I finally felt compelled to leave a comment.
Sephora alienated me when I am ostensibly at a point in my financial life where I have disposable income and am feeling the pinch of real, not imagined, aging.
Last time I ventured into an actual Sephora store, it was an absolute wreck. Pre-teens and younger kids were destroying testers by either scooping out the entire contents (and taking off with them) or mixing them in with other testers. The music was ungodly loud, so these kids had to shout above the music making it that much more unbearable.
The Sephora staff members were unable to be of any assistance as they were too busy standing guard over the Drunk Elephant and Sol de Janeiro products.
There were products tossed on the floor, strewn about randomly & everything looked man-handled. The front section of the store, was brightly colored eye-candy meant to lure in the younger kids, so that told me that Sephora no longer values middle-age me as a customer but instead wants the 11 year olds to brow-beat their parents into buying stuff for them.
I went to a different Sephora store later that day and it was obvious that it too had been overrun by feral pre-teens. I peaced out and haven’t spent any money with Sephora since. That was back in the summer of 2024.
I now buy directly from the brands I want products from. I find that more agreeable and can get free shipping or some other significant discount to make it worth my while.
LVHM / Sephora made the conscious decision to go after the younger demographic, which makes sense, but they did so by ensuring that the older demographics would be alienated by the chaos, mayhem, disorder, mess and noise. They didn’t come right out and tell me & my money to bugger off, but they did so by turning their brick & mortar stores into daycares.

Thanks for being a friend here so long Jayne 🙂 very, very flattered you’ve stick around this long! Oh wow that sounds horrible! I haven’t had this experience yet but I’ve heard about it and it’s a real problem with older consumers as you’ve described a lot of what others have experienced. I do see some teens in my stores but they’re pretty well behaved and not being too insane although, some part of me is amazed at what they are buying at times! I’ve taken to doing much of my shopping online because I just hate dealing with the SAs in stores. They either aren’t helpful or follow you around like you’re about to steal something. Not a good experience at all so I stick to online shopping! Sorry this happened to you!

I’ve received two fake makeup products from Amazon, no doubt due to the lack of quality control, so Amazon can be cheap but it’s too risky imo

I can’t say I’ve had the experience but I don’t doubt in the least that there are blackmarket items on Amazon :-/
