Musings of the Day: What’s Your Minimal Makeup Look for Summer?

What’s Your Minimal Makeup Look for Summer?

I was racing out of the house this morning and had time for concealer, quickie gloss and balm, plus some cheek stain!

Here’s my minimal makeup look for Summer!

I try to keep it as low key and fuss-free as possible in the heat or on days that I’m running late.

Normally that consists of concealing my eyes properly so I normally haul out my Bobbi Brown Concealer Palette and Benefit Lemon Aid to get my eyes looking as fresh as possible. I curl my lashes but I skip out on mascara normally if I’m not wearing eyeshadow. For my lips it’s a really quick slip of my fav product of the moment, Lipfusion Balm and clear gloss! And my face goes foundation free with a bit of Benefit Cha Cha to light it up!

Done!

Super fly fast makeup!

What’s your minimal makeup routine?

Particularly the one you embrace for Summer?

Lately I’ve been doing everything but mascara however starting tomorrow I’m just going to be going lipstick, a quickie neutral eyeshadow and blush as well as a little concealer for blemishes since my skin hates me lately. I can’t do under-eye concealer, I am always hyper aware of it 😐

      • Tammie

My problem is that I do need undereye concealer, it’s just that I can’t stand the feel of makeup under my eyes :(. I have terrible dark shadows under my eyes and it looks sooo much better with concealer (I tested a little Benefit Erase Paste and it made my eyes so much brighter) but I just can’t bear to have it on all day 🙁

        • the Muse

really? how odd ;-D I’m normally fine with it. I blend it out so sheer that you’d never know I had it on in the first place!

          • Tammie

I am just kind of like The Princess And The Pea…some things I just really notice and it bugs me ^^;; Maybe I’ll give it another chance though, it did make a huge difference.

          • the Muse

try the elf concealer studio brush tammie that thing is solid awesome gold ;D!

          • Tammie

I put it on my list, to give another go 🙂

  • Lemony Licks

Hello Muse. I have been reading your blog for a while, but this is my first time posting!

Foundation: Tony Moly Ice Queen Multi Play Cream as primer (bought it after your review – smells amazing!) and Skin79 Pink Label BB Cream (skipping the concealer, and BB Cream makes my skin look amazing), set with Hard Candy Matte Powder

Eyes: Single shade all over the lid (light brown, gold, whatever!), and one or two coats of mascara

Lips: EOS Summer Fruit Lipbalm, maybe gloss

And of course, sunscreen all over arms and legs.

    • the Muse

hi lemony licks! so nice to meet you ;-D! Yay for Tony Moly ;-D It does smell lovely doesn’t it ;-D great regime!

  • S

I use a light dusting of LG Balance N Brighten in Fair; sweep some bronzer (either Chanel Bronze Rose, Dior Aurora, EL Bronze Goddess) or LG matte blush in Boysenberry on my cheeks; MAC tinted lip conditioner in Ladygentle; I fill in my brows w/MAC Brun shadow and I’m done!

  • S

Forgot to say that I always moisturize first w/a couple of drops of Maracuja oil-best stuff ever!

  • Libby

If it’s a super hot day, I tend to just stick to a nice lip gloss or moisturizing lip stick but if it’s not too bad (anything under 90 is good for me!) then I’ll apply some BB cream, a bit of cream blush and some waterproof mascara. Either way though, I always curl my lashes even if I don’t use mascara!

Btw, really loving the cheeks in the photo 😀

    • the Muse

aw cheers thanks libby! I do the same, always curl even without mascara ;D!

  • Liane

Posietint on lips and cheeks, concealer where I need it (I use MAC, and for under my eyes I add a little High Beam to the mix), and mascara covered curled lashes. If I skip mascara, the curl doesn’t hold. I use Kiss Me Heroine Long & Curl.

  • Cj

For the last few days I wore Mac face and body with Tarte true blood cheek stain on my cheeks and lips. Pretty simple and the only stuff that won’t melt off my face lol. If I’m too bothered to even do that I’ll just take a lip gloss with me, Most likely a Stila lip glaze.

  • Jess

skin79 bb cream, concealer on blemishes and eyes (my circles are so dark and purple -.-), powder to set, through a powder blush (milani mai tai or elf pink passion/tickled pink) on top!

if i need more for work, i’ll throw on a neutral, shimmery eyeshadow, a purple or olive grey eyeliner, and some mascara on my pathetic asian lashes (:

    • Jess

      ack! throw*

and the skin79 cream i use is the gold one, even though i have oily skin because it lightens my acne scars 😀

  • CucumPear

I rarely run late in the morning and I enjoy leisurely painting my face. I still do my usual number of steps. In summer I just use less of everything. Clinique Sheer City Block instead of foundation, as little concealer as I can get away with and so forth.

But in a rush I’d use:
    Clinique Sheer City Block
    MAC MSFN
    any Benefit blush
    some kid of eyeshadow base
    NYX Highlight e/s all over
whichever dark pencil liner I grab first
    waterproof mascara on curled lashes
brow powder (my brows could only be wimpier if I didn’t have any)
lip balm (or one of the coloured lippies that always accumulate in my bags)

Seems like a lot, but I can do that in under five minutes. And it doesn’t melt on me (not that I live in the hottest of areas).

  • cyra

i wear concealer, bronzer, and blush on my face. i put on some chapstick and then I’m done! if i’m feeling fancy I put on a little shimmery eyeshadow (just one color though!)

  • tiny

Since it’s summah time, I do benetint on the pout of my lips, with posie tint blended into the rest of my lips (so I look like I just ate a popsicle) posie tint on the cheekies, high beam to make me glowy and occasionally under the browbone to lift the eyes, maybelline one by one mascara *I believe that’s the name* because it’s super non-clumpy, and if I’m really inspired Mac’s painterly on my lids with a bronzer in the crease, and urban decay el dorado 24/7 liner in the waterline.

Just outta curiosity, do you always rock the headband, or is that just to keep your hair out of your face during makeup application? I’m known to occasionally rock the headband mahself, and if it’s super hot my hair is a bun with the headband to keep my bangs from touching my face. 😛

    • the Muse

ha tiny I love the Popsicle lip look ;-D! Thanks for sharing! Keep my hair out of my face during makeup application, also like it at work to keep my hair tucked back as it’s very longggggggg and wild ;-D That’s me. Hair in a bun, headband keeping my hair out of my face. I hate it all over my face when I am working. :-/ https://www.musingsofamuse.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Retro.bmp HAIR! ;-D you can see what I mean about all the crazy hair ;D!

        • the Muse

          I didn’t realize anyone thought I didn’t majick lol…weird.

          • Majick

Sorry Muse, I didn’t mean anything by it. I just always see you in your headband and you can’t tell the length or texture, just the color of your hair; it’s gorgeous.

          • the Muse

aw that’s quite alright no need to apoligize?! majick ;-D I wouldn’t call it gorgeous, you’re too nice, it’s out of control crazyyyyyyy! too long, too wavy ;D one day I’ll get up the guts to cut it SUPER short!

  • Jessica

luckily for me i don’t need much coverage, so i just put on some L’Oreal touche magique concealer, some bad gal lash from benefit or No7 lash extensions mascara, a little bit of collection 2000 blusher in bashful all over face (hoping to replace that with Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzer in Maui or MAC semi precious mineralize skin finish in rose quartz ASAP!) ..i’m really pale so i find that a little pink all over my face gives me a healthy glow, NARS orgasm blush on cheeks then their albatross highlighting blush closer to the hairline and finally my MAC cremesheen lipglass in partial to pink.. looks kinda long but only takes a jiffy;D

  • Cait

Even my minimal routine is too much lol. typically skin 79 gold bb cream, garnier dark circle roller to conceal under my eyes, MUFE HD blush, a little UD Whiskey eyeliner, and some mascara. On days i’m REALLY roughing it i’ll just do the eye roller and mascara, but that’s rare (Even though my skin is so dry and flaky sometimes any type of base product, BB included, makes it look worse than if i just left it bare…meh :/ but i feel weird going to work in an office with zero foundation)

    • Tammie

OMG I am glad I am not the only person whose skin manages to get all dry and flaky with BB cream sometimes. Although unlike you I just couldn’t take it and have been going “bare faced” lately…I wish I knew what to do…putting moisturizer under the BB cream doesn’t even help!! Gah!

      • Cait

ughh i know..sucks doesn’t it? i exfoliate like mad, use really expensive moisturizers, really emolient BBs, and i STILL get flaky skin. it’s so disgusting, especially when i’m trying to look polished and presentable for work.

        • Tammie

It really really sucks. My face looks AMAZING first thing in the morning with the BB cream, then not even an hour later my face just SUCKS all the moisture out of it or something and my forehead looks all puckered and my dry areas feel tight and are super flaky. On a couple occasions the dry spots on my cheeks flared up and flaked off or something leaving bare patches where there was once blush. T_T

The worst thing was the other day (this was the last straw) when I had the BB cream over some really bad blemishes and it must have completely dried up the top layer of skin because it was just a SCALE OF DEAD SKIN laying there on top of the blemish. It was SO nasty and ugly :'(. The worst thing was that I couldn’t wash my face so I kind of had to McGuiver it and put hand lotion on my face then use my concealer stick to cover the exposed blemishes. UGHHHHHH.

          • Cait

hah oh i feel you. i get to work at 8:30 and by around 10 i look in the mirror and want to just wash my face, because all my makeup is like peeling off. i’ve had the bare patches too 🙁 i even bought the clarisonic in hopes that it would fix it..it helps a little but not really.

  • Christine

When I wake up super late for work & have to run out, this is what I do:

-Clinique’s Anti-Redness Mineral Powder (my pinky pink skin can’t go a day w/out)
-theBalm’s Time Balm for under eyes
-Lancome’s Definicils in Deep Brown on my lashes
-And I throw my Burt’s Bees Pomegranate Oil Lip Balm in my pocket :-).

This is the barest of the bare minimum, but sometimes being under-made-up is better than being late :P.

    • Cait

i have kinda pinkish skin too, but i was always afraid the clinique powder would make me look yellow. does it really work?

  • mayrei

On the hottest days, I just wear sunblock, MUFE Full Cover concealer, Estee Lauder Double Wear Light, Nars blush in Luster, and some lipgloss. On the not-as-hot days, I wear Missha M Perfect Cover instead of the Double Wear and maybe add some mascara. I’m loving the new Benefit mascara, They’re Real.

  • Jennifer

lately I’ve just been doing foundation, a little blush, lipgloss and sometimes when I remember some mascara!

  • Quinctia

I’ve been using UD Urban Defense with a setting powder, though I still end up having to use concealer on some of the redder bits of my face.

I don’t really skimp anywhere else specifically for summer. My main issue is that I sweat heavily on my face, especially my upper lip, so my face makeup tends to wear off if that happens.

  • Nhung

Concealer for dark circles, blush, lipstick and I curl my lashes (if I remember to). I don’t wear mascara because it will end up on my face anyways :/

  • kate

hi muse! hope you’re 4th was as awesome as you! minimal routine:
    1. moisturizer w/ spf 30 2. concealer for this one spot on my chin from an old cystic that will. not. go. away., 3. chapstick 4. url lashes, and 5. cheek tint. =)

    • the Muse

was amazing kate ;-D I was away for most of it, so was really nice to be out of the city ;-D! thanks for sharing your minimal routine ;D!

  • Carrie

I too need my concealer always! Then I use a tarte cheek stain or Josie Maran color stick, gloss and mascara.

  • tee

Light Moisturizer with SPF, wash of shimmery sheer colro on lids + line with MAC liquidlast and finish with the body shop lip/cheek tint. simple & humid proof! ha!

  • Jen

    Hi, Muse!

I have been pining for that ChaCha tint ever since you’ve reviewed it…ugh. Not fair. But seeing as it’s a stain, the $29 bucks sounds worth it for a more effortless summer routine. Yay!

Anyhow, summers here are extremely unpredictable. One day it’s in the low 80s with a nice breeze, the next it’s sweltering hot with an unbelievably high relative humidity. My skin is die-hard combination–dry to the point of cracking at my nostrils and oily everywhere else. To top things off, I’m paler than the moon and turn redder than a lobster when exposed to any summer sun, so the daily minimal routine after the morning shower is as follows:

Olay Touch of Sun facial moisturizer with SPF 15
Neutrogena Color Boosting sunblock in SPF 30
A pat or two of NYX bronzer in Daydream of Kauai in what I call the ‘butterfly’ area of my face where I turn red the fastest
NYX blush in Mocha along the cheekbones and a dab on the bridge of my nose
Any non-tinted lip balm with SPF 15 or higher
Waterproof mascara, either L’Oreal Voluminous in Carbon Black or Maybeline Falsies in Blackened Brown.

  • Majick

Regular skincare routine (moisturizer, eye cream)
Per-fect primer in Radiant or Rich
    Per-fect bronzer
Per-fect blush – either straight if I want pink or mixed with the bronzer if I want peach.
touch of concealer if I need it (I do)
smashbox shadow base with a basic non color shadow all over
UD 24/7 liner tightlined on top only
bad gal lash – I finally found a use for this (this mascara makes my lashes just look good – not fat, not bad, but feathery and light.
whatever gloss or lippie is hanging out in my purse (I usually have a choice of 4 or 5 LOL)

    OR:

    same primer
    cha cha by benetint
    lip gloss

Ok, so varying degrees of minimal LOL No matter what I wear a sunscreen.

  • Tammie

    Re: the concealer brush.

I don’t have the time/patience in the AM for brushes w/ creamy stuff :(. It applies just fine I am just weird. Maybe I have to “break myself” like I did with lipstick.

I wouldn’t wear lipstick for YEARS because it would feel so thick and dry on my lips. Then recently I just MADE myself wear it and now even “drying” lipsticks are bearable. So maybe I just need to force myself to wear under eye concealer and it’ll stop bothering me.

  • Claudia

Hey Muse! Love your look 🙂

Eyes: Covergirl Lashblast Length mascara and Maybelline Falsies Mascara, UD Primer Potion and a single shadow or just a Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow (man do those save time! no need for primer!)

Face: Benefit Sugarbomb Blush (really just brightens up my face and adds glow!)

Lips: A nice balm, love Korres Lip Butter! Loreal HIP Jelly Balms are nice too!….or I just go for my latest obsession. The Buxom Big and Healthy Lip Polishes! They are to die for and plump my lips!

  • Majick

For some reason I coudln’t find the reply button on your last post.

NOOOOOOOO! Don’t cut it, it’s really pretty. Come on over and I’ll do you a nice french braid or something. 😉

      • Majick

you are just adorable – have you tried the Living Proof No Frizz products? I really like them although my hair is a different color/texture than yours. I have wavy, semi thin (but a lot of it), light brown hair with highlights. When I let it dry naturally my once wavy curls just turn to poof. I always use some kind of pomade (jonathan dirt, etc.,) to tame the frizzy flyaways. The living proof products are really nice and can now be had at Ulta as well as Sephora. They help keep the definition to my waves.

  • glitterwitch

    Hiya Muse!!! (waves wildly)

I dont do minimalist even in summer. I need full coverage baby and am more than happy to keep the Urban Decay All Nighter spray for everyday essential slap in place. Feel really ugly some days so like to keep my mask intact at all times! Well….not ALL times. There are one or two occasions I can think of where I dont mind it slipping off a bit 😀
