Beauty Confession: Sometimes I Buy Men’s Razors

men-razors

Sorry not sorry I sometimes buy men’s razors! Don’t get me wrong, I love all those Venus Goddess of Shaving Razors and I like all our pink girlie girlie frou frou options. But sometimes I like to buy men’ razors because…

They get me a way closer shave. I can’t be alone thinking this right? Seriously, I use to love those Gilette Mach 3 Disposable Razors! They were green and they had three of the sharpest blades. I’m talking Ginsu knife send no money now slice through a can sharp!

Seriously though, if you haven’t considered a men’s razor in the past, do it. It’s kind of a refreshing change from the standard women’s razor!

Confess, do you every buy men’s razors?

Or maybe snick in some men’s deodorant?

Any gender bending rule breaking you’re doing at the local drugstore?

Do share!

Absolutely, because “the pink tax” is real. Meaning that identical items can often cost more if they’re labeled as being for women — razors, shampoo, hair color, socks, and so on.

This was really brought home to me lately when we became grandparents. Nearly identical baby items are often priced higher if they’re for girls, especially if they’re literally pink.

I haven’t bought a women’s razor in I don’t know how many years. I use the same kind my husband does, I know them by sight but can’t ever remember the name; black and green. So much better than any women’s razor I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a LOT).

    • Isabella Muse

Likewise! I’m always drawn in by the cute packaging on women’s razors but so disappointed at the results! I just feel like men’s razor’s get a way closer shave and they also rinse off really well where as women’s razors get clogged easily!

  • Desirea

I only buy men’s razors! The Gillette fusion pro glide to be exact! It changed my shaving life it’s so good. The cartridges are insane to buy but I can’t go back lol. I can even remember a woman’s razor that I bought more than once. I’m always trying to get people to try it!

    • Isabella Muse

have not tried the Gillette fusion pro glide but will be doing so now 😀

  • Melody

Girl, all I use are mens razors. They are so much better and definitely give a closer shave. I also recommend exfoliating before shaving because that helps to get a closer shave as well. (this fact might be common sense but i just figured it out lol!)

    • Isabella Muse

Oh yes! I so exfoliate prior 😀 Def gets a closer, smoother shave 😀 Great tip!

  • Ashley

I only buy men’s disposables! A pack of 16 is the same price as a pack of 8 women’s, and the blades cut so much better. To me, a blade is a blade. I tend to care more about my shaving cream than my razors, anyway. That makes all the difference!

  • Lauren

I always buy men’s razors. I have very dark, coarse hair, so I need the closer shave that men’s razors give. I’ve never found women’s razors to be worth the extra cost.

  • Wendy

I’ve been using the Hydro 5 for years! I won’t use anything else. It’s just awesome!

  • Sjofna

I haven’t bought mens’ razors, but my fiance likes to use my girls shaving cream. He ran out of his one day and grabbed mine out of the shower. He says he gets a much closer shave and his face is soft after.

  • dia

For those of you with oily skin, men’s cleansers work much better. Men’s facial skin tend to be oilier, and so their cleansers work better at removing excess oil.

      • Susan

Hey, Muse there’s a whole post or two for ya — compare men’s and women’s products that supposedly do the same things! Would be very interesting and no doubt enlightening. 😀

  • Diana

I will confess for my husband and daughter since they will never read this. My husband and son prefer girl deodorant but they only use the powder scent and my daughter prefers men’s deodorant.

    • Isabella Muse

I totally use men’s deo sometimes haha 😀 I love the smell of the Old Spice ones!

        • Lisa

My daughter in college uses that same kind! I don’t where or how she heard about it, but I was like really?! But then I smelled it & it’s really nice!
I”m weird about super smelly stuff & have been known to sniff everything before buying including deodorant, shampoo, body wash & moisturizer. Really intense fragrances make my head hurt!
Also, my daughter gets those Dollar Shave club deliveries. I think they’re probably the same for men & women. They don’t have girlie handles. I think it costs her about $16/month. I’d prolly cut my arm off, so I stick to my very pricey Schick Intuition!

  • CAROL G.

I’ve only used men’s razors for the past 10-15 years because I have a husband and two sons so it only made sense to buy one package of cartridges and have eveyone use the same brand. I get them at Sam’s because they do cost an arm and a leg. I agree they are better than women’s.

  • Christina D.

This is why I love this blog and especially love the Muse — I learn something everyday! I’m going to buy men’s razors next time since they not only work better but are cheaper than the women’s version. (Rant: I guess it’s not enough that women aren’t paid equal wages for equal work, or that the glass ceiling is very real, but we get to pay more for the same products!).

Back to the subject of this post: I’m not a perfume lover by any means (I have one bottle to my name of the only scent I can tolerate) but I do like the smell of men’s colognes, so much so that I have considered wearing my boyfriend’s colognes.

    • Isabella Muse

haha I adore you sis! 😀 Def try it out, you’d be surprised by the outcome! I swear hey give a way closer shave!!!!! Amen preach it girl, preach it! And, I’m with you! i love love love men’s fragrances 😀 You should SJP Stash! It’s lovely!

  • LIANE

I subscribe to dollar shave club. I save a ton of money doing this and the blades are just as good as anything pink and expensive from the drug store.

    • Isabella Muse

I was going to do that but never got around too! not only because it was cheap but also those damn commercials lol!

  • Susan

I’ve been using men’s razors for at least 10 to 15 years! They are cheaper, work just as well, and it’s easier to use the same kind as my husband. I kind of resent being charged more for a “girly” razor. Why does it need to be girly, anyway?? I also use a men’s deodorant, Right Guard!

  • Ashley

Lol, I love your confessionals! Women (and girls) often get embarrassed for things that almost every female does – unless you are born a hairless, curvy, Amazon natural beauty with perfect skin and no body odor. I’ve been using men’s razors since forever, and I laugh at Venus shave commercials. Yes, they ARE cheaper and get the job done much better imo. And I like to use a lil bit of moisturizing conditioner to shave with. My legs feel smooth and lovely.

    • Isabella Muse

Haha gotta keep it real, Ashley 😀 I don’t understand why women feel like they can’t talk about burping, periods, body hair, and a ton of other “taboo” topics. Come on! I’m real, sorry, I can’t deny that I sweat, get my period, and have hair under my arms (and hell on my upper lip too!) 😀

  • Claudia

I use Hydro 5 for women and I love it. I tried the men’s pro fusion in orange and it has a pretty good shave too. Today at Ulta I was smelling some of the men’s cologne(out of boredom) and D&G Pour Homme and Light Blue and Chanel Bleu smelled pretty good, almost enough for me to buy. My husband uses the women’s Dove deodorant since it is unscented and he actually likes it.
Also not only is there a “pink tax” there is also a “baby tax”. Aquaphor with the baby drawing is about four to six bucks more than the regular stuff in the lotion aisle :/ and is the exact same stuff! That is not the only baby product I have found like that.

    • Amanda

Companies definitely do love labeling or coloring something differently and selling it for a higher price.

  • Lorraine. E.R

I heard SO many women saying this online that I bought a mens razor last time I was at Walmart. It wasn’t any less expensive because I sat there holding the equivalent men/women versions of razor and it was same price. But still i figured if it works better/lasts longer I get more value.
Unfortunately I think I need the moisturizers and stuff that are in the women’s razors I usually use (like Venus) because my legs got all these red bumps within a few days and a few under my arms and they are still not completely gone 3 weeks later!! I switched back to my regular razor immediately but the bumps got cut when I shaved again and then they kept bleeding each time so I had to skip shaving altogether for a week. I’m still sad looking at them because the bumps are all scabbed now and it looks terrible.
If you have sensitive skin like me you may want to stick with the ones with built in moisture strips and whatnot.
(Also I bought a 12.00 one with replaceable heads so it wasn’t because I used something cheap and shoddy it was a nice Gillette one with 4 or 5 blades)

    • Isabella Muse

oh no! are you shaving on bare skin? I typically use shaving cream and get a super close shave no red bumps thankfully!

  • Elise

LOL! I use the exact brand you picture in this post. In fact I have used the Shick Hydro 5 for more than 10 years. Why? Price (there is always a coupon & sale on men’s razors & blades), reliability, long lasting, & great shave! Hands down better than any of the women’s brands I have tried. While I am a fan of the men’s razors, their shave gel, I am not! Skintimates all the way!

  • Dee

Clinique used to have an acne gel that had 2% salicylic acid in it that I used nightly and it was around $24 or so. It’s been discontinued. Anyhoo I was looking for something for my son who had just started using a razor and breaking out. Found a Clinique shaving product for men and realized the ingredients were identical to the product I was using…..and it was at least $10 cheaper. I bought that for myself and for my son and then they discontinued that as well

Frustrating that women’s products cost more for the same thing.

  • Lindsay

I have been buying men’s razors for a while now and I’ll never go back! Check out the Harry’s line at Target. It is cheap ($2 per razor blade) and works amazingly!

  • Zovesta

Yup yup. I only buy the super cheap, disposable men’s pack of razors. I always have bristles left over with the women’s – and don’t get me started on how fancy 3+ blade ones ALWAYS cut me. I can get my legs as smooth as a baby’s butt with a 2-bladed, ugly navy razor. ;P

  • Angel

I am a sucker for anything pink and girly, but men’s razors are all I buy now! I honestly think they’re sharper and at the prefect angle for legs, underarm, and wherever a girl needs to remove hair 🙂

  • Ashlynn

That’s totally okay! Men’s razors are ALL I have used since I was a teen. They work so much better, less fragranced, and far less irritating. I don’t get razor burn, ever with these Hydro 5’s. razors for life.
