What’s the Fragrance That Was Your Gateway Drug Into the World of Perfume?

fragrance

What’s the fragrance that introduced you to the world of perfumes? That one single fragrance that was a gateway drug into your current perfume addiction? Do you ever remember what it was?

I can think of three and I bet at least one of mine is similar to what you’ll reply.

If I think back my first real fragrance was Bath & Body Works Sweet Pea. Ironically I can’t stand it now. It smells awful to me and cheap too (sorry if you love it!). But when I was like 16? It was all the awesome. There’s also Vitabath Raspberry which I like still have a bottle of somewhere because if nothing else at all I’m a fragrance hoarder. Vitabath still makes it but I remember when it was in a clear bottle and the liquid was a pretty pink. I haven’t tried it in many years, even though I still love me some Vitabath, and now I feel compelled to go buy a bottle and see how I’m feeling about it now and if it might be the same.

By I digress, I think the first fragrance that got me hooked on perfumes was Elizabeth Arden Sunflower followed by Clinique Happy and Ralph Lauren Ralph. I remember my mom purchased me my first bottle of Sunflower at Macys. I felt like an official adult. It’s a funny thing because my mom does not wear makeup nor is she into makeup at all but she loves fragrance! Although I question some of her favorites, Jean Tate and Charlie anyone? Wince!

What’s the Fragrance that was your gateway drug into the world of perfume?

What’s the first fragrance you remember that got you into perfumes?

I have a love/hate relationship with Bath and Body Works. I find that most of their fragrances end up smelling the same to me and are too strong but there are some that I love like the holiday ones. For example, Vanilla Bean Noel.

In terms of my gateway perfume, it probably had to be DKNY Be Delicious. I got it as a gift maybe when I was like 13 and I’ve loved it ever since. I even convinced my mom to buy me the lip gloss version of it lol. I don’t think they sell it anymore though.

    • Isabella Muse

Likewise. BBW releases the same thing time and time again in terms of notes but I have a love/hate relationship with them too! I keep going back for more like an idiot.

  • Michelle

Love’s Fresh Lemon, Emeraude and Jovan Musk (hey, it was the early 70’s I was about 12 years old!)

    • Isabella Muse

I wish I remember Love’s Fresh Lemon but can’t recall using it but I love those commercials with Donovan’s music!

    • isabella

I adored that Love’s Lemon, it was something else
      and Emeraude as well

      • The Beauty Alchemist

YES I loved Love’s Lemon too. Not many people talk about that one . I am still a citrus scent fan but have graduated up a bit. My first expensive perfume – that was the original Chloe and I still have that same bottle tucked away. I felt so very mature at 16 with my French perfume. Lifelong love of tuberose began there.

        • Sarah

I don’t remember the lemon but it sounds yummy. Should bring it back. For me it was the loves baby soft and Exclamation.

    • MaryAnne

Lol, me too! Love’s Fresh Lemon, Emaraude, Jovan musk and those little compacts with 3 solid coordinating fragrances in each. Don’t remember the name – maybe Coty…

      • marie

The compacts were Coty Sweet Earth. I had two of them-the one with patcholi and amber and the Alpine Mountain one. I really loved them and I wish they were still around. Vermont County Store revived them a few years ago, but they were too expensive for me and people said that they weren’t the same. Other early favorites for me were Charlie (still like this) and Halston. There was a version of Charlie in the late 80s or early 90s named Charlie Forest Herbal. That was the bomb!

        • marie

I forgot to mention Love’s Fresh Rain and Tatiana! I loved those too. I found Tatiana years later, but the scent was not the same.

  • Mary Babicki

Love’s Baby Soft and Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth. Yeah, I’m old.

  • Lauren

Moschino I Love Love. I wore it at the end of high school and beginning of college, if I smell it today it is a direct trip down memory lane. This is why for better or worse I try to change my everyday scent every year or so. Scent is too tied to memory, and I don’t want to get stuck in the past.

  • Melissa

Mine was also Clinique happy, the blue Ralph Lauren one, Hugo boss women, & Lolita Lempicka original one & also bbw stuff & VS love spell. Mostly cheapies lol. I received sunflowers as a gift & hated it but still wore it for a short time. I had some healing garden fragrances that I loved also. Oh & vanilla fields.

  • Aris

Love’s baby soft, city wild musk, Jovan white musk, Calvin moonlit evening, Calvin moon petal musk, city skin musk, impulse body sprays the yellow butterfly one called merely musk and the blue butterfly one, Avon pearls & lace, Avon soft musk, Avon Ariane, bath &body works dun ripened raspberry. I miss all of them some are still sold but have greatly changed

  • Robin Hawkins

At age 16, it was Sweet Honesty. By age 21,,,Chloe helped usher in the world of perfume for me. Memories…..

    • Sarah

Ahhhh, sweet honesty. Yes. Does anyone remember Pearls and Lace? I LOVED that Avon fragrance. At 40, I would buy it now if they still made it.

  • Aris

My corrected comment, I hate auto correct!!
Love’s baby soft, coty wild musk, Jovan white musk, Calgon moonlit evening, Calgon moon petal musk, cotyy skin musk, impulse body sprays the yellow butterfly one called merely musk and the blue butterfly one, Avon pearls & lace, Avon soft musk, Avon Ariane, bath &body works sun ripened raspberry. I miss all of them. some are still sold but have greatly changed

    • Isabella Muse

I agree completely about items still be available but being drastically changed. I purchased a bottle of Heaven Scent as I was wanting to take a trip down memory lane and it smelled awful, nothing like I remember!

  • MN Diamond Girl

Flashback to the ’80s! Sand and Sable, Babe (?) and Love’s Baby Soft were my favorite perfumes at the time. I think every girl is my class owned a bottle of Love’s Baby Soft. We sprayed so much perfume at the end of gym class, there must have been a pink mushroom cloud over the school.

  • Bonnie

Love’s Baby Soft was my first perfume…apparently for a lot of us! However, even at a tender age I much preferred my mom’s favorite, Chanel No. 5 (she had the eau de parfum and also always had the matching body powder–which I would sneak small amounts of–do they even still make the powder?). She cheated on Chanel No. 5 in the ’80s for a while with Anais Anais but eventually made her way back to Chanel. I love Chanel perfumes myself still but also have loved Bulgari and now Nest, among many others! I also always have gardenia and patchouli oils around.

  • Cara

Gots to be Benetton’s Tribu. don’t know what it was about it, but I soooo loved that scent. Then Sunflowers — I think that was an Elizabeth Arden fragrance? Yikes — I’m so aging myself.

    • Tammy

Avon Pearls & Lace ( still my all-time favorite perfume). I also loved and wore Jontue and Love’s Baby Soft ( I got nostalgic and bought bottles of these a year or two ago), L’ Jardin, Avon Honey Suckle, Avon Field of Flowers, Heaven Scent, Jordache ( that one was AMAZING), and Night Blooming Jasmine. Now I wear Tocca Stella , J’adore, Tresor In Love, Light Blue, and several others. I really wish Avon would bring back Pearls & Lace, though.

    • Kar

Ah, yes…Tribu by Benetton. Very unique bottle. Just one spritz lasted for hours. I think you are remembering Sunflowers which was by Elizabeth Arden and was around at the same time, early 90’s.

  • Li

I believe sunflowers was my first dept store fragrance too. I made my father buy it for me when I graduated eighth grade ( I didn’t wear or buy makeup but loved fragrances). I also wore skin musk and exclamation. I wasn’t into bbw scents but loved tbs dewberry ( I guess it has been reformulated and not the same).

    • Isabella Muse

I can’t recall how old I was but I was probably in 8th grade too, now I feel old hahaha!

    • Emily

I loved Body Shop’s Dewberry too! I don’t think I ever bought a whole bottle, but would put it on every time I went to the store. Which was a lot.

      • Christie

Yessssss! Dewberry!! Can you believe I still have some (perfume oil) left?!?! I’m preserving it lol! The bottle is ten years old this year and I think it was discontinued shortly after I bought it. It brings me back every time I smell it!

  • Z

I was stealing my mom’s perfumes such as ck euphoria and j’adore lol I didn’t even like them that much on me but they were amazing on my mom and I felt like an adult when I used them when I was 16. My first big girl perfume is lolita lempicka the original and I started collecting other lolita perfumes, sadly I don’t like them anymore but I kept their pretty bottles on vanity.

  • Vone Parnell-Posley

Elizabeth Red Door was the bomb back in the day. I remember hitting the house parties and feeling myself! Haha

  • Lauren

When I was little (about 6 ish) my mom had this set of the older Love’s perfumes that she would let me put on before church. There was Baby Soft of course, but also Fresh Lemon, Soft Jasmin, and Rain Scent. Soft Jasmin was my favorite. She eventually gave me the bottle and I made it last until high school when BBW introduced a resonable substitute with Midnight Path.

  • Jen R

I was obsessed with Electric Youth (and, everything Debbie Gibson!) but never allowed to have it.

The first perfume I bought for myself was Exclamation, and I loved it so much that I also bought the matching shower gel, body lotion, and body powder.

I also loved Tribe and another one called Malibu Breeze, California Breeze, or something like that.

  • Lisa S.

I remember being in 5th grade and using my baby sitting money to buy a bottle of Toujours Moi, I also remember buying the Coty Sweet Earth Solid perfumes. I loved Heaven Sent and Sand and Sable and Vanderbilt when I got a bit older.
When I got to be a senior in high school, I bought my first crazy grown up perfume, Mage Noir. After that it was Poison and then when I was a young married woman who couldn’t afford expensive perfumes it was Navy and Vanilla Fields. Now I wear pretty much everything. I just got a bottle of More Than The Stars Perfume Oil 5 by Olivine Atelier for myself for Christmas but I wore something from Bath and Body works yesterday. I’m looking to get a bottle of Clean Cashmere and a bottle of By the Fireplace when i go to St Louis this weekend. I love some of Andy Tauer’s perfumes and I love some L`Artisan perfumes. What can I say I’m a Perfume Ho!……

  • Linda Whitener

Michelle and I must be contemporaries, because Emeraude was one of my first fragrances, too (teenager in 1970s), and I had a boyfriend who wore the men’s version of Jovan Musk. I may be a bit older, though, because I was also mad about Yardley’s Oh! de London, which was very much a “swinging 60s” thing: it was launched to capitalize on the British Invasion (Beatles, Stones, etc.) and it smelled WONDERFUL. Oh! how I wish it were still available….

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t remember that one Linda! I have to google! Now you both have me curious!

  • jeane

I was raised on Estee Lauder, so Youth Dew and White Linen were my first official perfumes. I also wore Cinnabar. My first real make up was Estee Lauder and Clinique. My mom and I practicality lived at Macys

  • Laura

Calvin Klein Eternity. I loved it, I was 11 when I asked for it for Xmas.

    • Sarah

Eternity was the bomb in the early 90’s. I never got a bottle, but I remember friends wanting it for Xmas.

  • Rebecca

I think it was called Heaven? They sold it at the Gap. Also Clinique Happy and Vera Wang Princess (mainly for the crown on the bottle, lol)

  • Robin

Sweat Pea by BB&W and Navy were my first fragrances. Then Givenchy Design and Ysatis were my first grown up fragrances.

  • Desirea

I never knew that perfume didn’t have to give me a headache until I smelled Chloe eau de parfum. It’s been a lot of trial and error because I’m very sensitive to smells and will get a migraine in a second. But Chloe eau de parfum will forever be my favorite! It’s just the perfect scent . But my first-ever was Clinique Happy Heart. I remember going with my grandma to buy that at Macy’s. It’s still good one!

  • Heather

OMG!!! Anyone remember Coty Longing??? I wish they still made it, that was my favorite scent of all time!!! And of course Vanilla Fields, loved it, and my best friend wore it too, so great memories. Revlon used to make 2 that I loved also, I think it was called Revlon Red, and Revlon White. Revlon used to make some amazing smelling shampoo/conditioner too, it was in a black and gold bottle, and left your hair smelling like perfume. On an unrelated note, does anyone remember the tv show Swan’s Crossing with Michelle Gellar? I loved that show, and it was only on for a short time, nobody I ever ask ever remembers it????

    • Isabella Muse

I remember Revlon Red! I can’t remember what it smelled like lol! But I remember owning it 😀 Mid 90’s they had a sexy bottle design that I adored. I’m googling that show never heard of it lol!

      • Heather

It was like a teenage soap opera, I’ve tried searching it before, but never really come up with anything, maybe you’ll have better luck?? I challenge you to ask everyone you know if they’ve heard of it, let’s see if I’m the only person who watched daytime tv in the 90’s!!!

        • Heather

Go to IMDB, they have it listed there, I can’t believe I actually found it…

        • Isabella Muse

scored! Watching on my phone right now lol! Youtube has some episodes! Looks like something I’d have loved in the 90’s haha! I’m waiting on some friends at the moment, I’ll ask them, but I doubt they heard of this. I can’t believe how young SMG is!

    • Heather

I just remembered!!! The Revlon shampoo was called Outrageous!! It smelled amazing and your hair was perfumed the whole day!! I wanna go back to the 90’s!!! 🙁

    • Allie

I had a major crush on Garrett. Real name was Shane McDermott. I even remember the theme song to that show.

  • Michou

I’m not sure how but Giorgio Armani’s Si just… made me go from not caring about fragrance to being obsessed overnight. It just meshed with me and made me realize how much I missed wearing something new and warm and lovely. Now, I’m obsessed with getting samples from luckyscent or twistedlily and wearing something different constantly. I do love that being able to get samples let me buy a ton for very little and try new things all the time. Now that I think about it, it’s the last facet of the beauty world that has finally got it’s stranglehold on me.

Sorry I’ve been so MIA, life has been hellish but I hope things are awesome for you honey.

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Michou! Happy New Year! Miss ya. Hellish busy I hope and not hellish bad 🙂 I’m doing well! xoxoxoxoxo!

      • Michou

Meh, I’ll tell you all about it via e-mail. It’s been… a time. xoxoxoxoxoxo!!!!

        • Isabella Muse

Anytime, I’m here xoxoxoxo! I hope all is well! It’s 2017, fresh start right? 😀

  • Jane

The first one I wore? Petite Naté! My god, how soft and precious and perfect that was. Then White Shoulders. And Lizzy Arden’s Blue Grass deodorant was a real turning point (sadly, the eau smells fetid on me or I would wear the crap out of it).

If you do a post of the perfumes we didn’t buy and regret, I have three locked and loaded!

  • Nat

When I was a little girl, Avon made a bath care line called “Country Classics Honey & Almond”. I would use the bubble bath, then the lotion, and then pat the powder on top (all three scented the same). It smelled SOOOOOO good! I wish they would make it again! 🙂

My first perfume was Chanel #5. I had a tiny bottle that my mom didn’t want and gave to me, and I carried it in my little tiny purse. (this would have been around 6th grade – BTW this was the same purse I mentioned to you before that was stocked with products all girls must have according to “The Valley Girls’ Guide to Life”). Made me feel so grownup! 😀

    • Deborah

I just looked on eBay and there are lots of listings for Country Classics Honey & Almond”!!

  • Heidi

My mom sold Avon for a hot minute and I liked Odyssey. Then she got Estée Lauder Youth Dew and I liked stealing sprays of that. She also got Emeraude, which I liked. I found that half off at Walgreens after Xmas a year or two ago and found I still like that.
Later I got Love’s Baby Soft, Vanilla Fields and I think Charlie.
The first perfume I bought as a grownup, while in college anyway, was the Body Shop’s White Musk. After that I graduated to some BBW stuff but it never stuck.
Now I prefer Chanel No. 5, Shalimar and Opium.
When I was a kid my mom always bought 4711, which I still love and wear. I think that’s the one that’s had the most impact on me. I’ve looked for dupes but found nothing beat the original.

    • Deborah

I just picked up some Shalmar Dusting Body Powder at Nordstrom and it is heavenly!! Have you tried the body powder?

  • Jamie

When I was 11 or 12, one of my relatives gifted my mom with a coffret of mini Christian Dior fragrances. I smelled the Forever and Ever fragrance in the pink bottle and was immediately hooked. Unfortunately I think they reformulated the fragrance as I bought a full-sized bottle a few years ago and it doesn’t smell as strong as it use to.

  • Aretsuya

Hmm…well, my first desired perfume was Bath and Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom when I was in high school mainly because I was an anime/manga/video game-holic. But if I had to name my gateway perfume, it was Kenzo Amour Indian Holi. I felt like a legit “grown-up” the first time I wore that scent. I still have the bottle in my bathroom (seriously it’s too gorgeous throw away) and now I’m mostly wearing Atelier Cologne’s Ambre Nue.

  • *Estrella

Plumeria and Absolute Tulip are my old BBW favorites for sure! But the scent that got me truly into real perfumes would definitely be Burberry Brit Sheer. Its the perfect everyday scent for me. I’m very all about matching scents to my mood and Burberry Brit Sheer always makes me feel like a better me.

  • Millay

New to commenting here, hello! My mom collected mini perfumes and she had all the classics but for some reason I was never attracted to any of them. The first perfume I fell utterly in love with was Terry Mugler’s Angel. I was crazy about the scent and the star shaped bottle (so impractical though that it doesn’t stand up). I hear it’s a love or hate it scent.

These days my perfume of choice is Givenchy’s Ange ou Demon Le Secret. I’m monogamous when it comes to perfume although I use the samples I get from shopping.

    • Isabella Muse

Hi Millay! Welcome! I love Angel too but I was introduced to it much later on in life. I def feel it is a love/hate fragrance, it’s one that’s pretty powerful!

  • dia

lol… some of these comments make me feel so old ☺️. when DKNY Be Delicious was released in 2004, I was already 29! I think my first introduction to fragrance was Wind Song by Prince Machabelli

    • Isabella Muse

aww nooo! I see people going way back with some of their favs 😀

  • eb

One Christmas, about 25 years ago, my mom bought me an Avon Imari perfume gift set. I immediately fell in love with the sweet and musky notes. It was the first scent I ever wore.

  • Anne

My first real perfume purchase was Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden. Before that I dabbled with the typical Exclamation & Tribu. I loved onto Colors by Benneton, Vivid by Liz Claiborne and then to my absolute favorite, Sun Moon Stars.
My high school fragrance was CK One.
In elementary I used Loves Fresh Lemon, Rain & Jasmine. I still have bottle of Baby Soft & Berry Blossom though!

    • Esther Ramirez

I was looking for someone to mention those, I loved Exclamation and Old Navy or something with the word Navy!

  • Tracy

For me, I was in high school and it was Ralph by Ralph Lauren, Gap Dream and Gap Blue, which is a unisex perfume and sadly discontinued.

  • FrugalCat

Love’s Baby Soft, Jean Nate, Verve, Impulse, Jovan Musk, and Vanilla Fields, which actually came out a few years after I discovered the other fragrances. My mom wore Emeraude or Muget de Bois.

Ah, memories! And I feel so old when all if you talk about BBW in high school. When I was in high school, BBW did not even exist!!

    • Bela T

Oh WOW I COMPLETELY forgot about Jean Nate!!!!!!! I knew I was excluding one out! Total memory flashback– Summer in the 80s, kicking it at the pool, or the beach surfing the days away! My pool days are over but NOT the surfing! haha (just not everyday anymore)
Thanks for reminding me FrugalCat! And for some odd reason Jean Nate “blended” well with Tropicana tanning oil. They smelled fantastic together!

  • Natalia

My first real perfume was Nina Ricci the red apple one. After that I became obsessed.

  • styesha

Angel by Thierry Mugler. I used to steal it from my mum and spritz some on before going to school since the 1st grade lol.

  • Kimmwc03

Mine was Sunflower too. Followed by ck One and Tommy Girl. My Bath & Body Works obsession was Cucumber Melon.

  • Justin

My very first fragrance was Halston. I can’t believe I admitted to that just now! I’ve always loved fragrance and loved going through magazines and seeing ads when I was little. My grandmother wore Charlie from the time it launched

    • Isabella Muse

Oh gosh I remember Halston! 🙂 Haha, it’s ok J, it’s only between us a million other people. lol! My mom loves Charlie! 😀

      • Claudia

My mother in law wears Halston. But not just one spritz, 8 at a time, I counted . And she says she doesn’t understand why she can’t wash it out of her clothing. My husband took her somewhere in my car and told her not to spray any perfume because he doesn’t want the car to smell like some French whore. She wore it to my recovery room when I gave birth to my son, it was the most nauseating penetrating stench ever. I almost kicked her out.

  • Bela T

Vanderbilt for me! Then after that it was Liz Claiborne! LOL I bought them recently for sentimental reasons, can’t wear them obviously! HAHA, My high end perfume when I was 19 was White Linen OH how I loved that! Last time I sprayed that on myself at the Dept store, I smelled like my dog who just finished getting wet in the mud then rolled around in a fresh dirt pile…. LMAO horrendous! Funny how chemistry changes over the years, This year (as in 3 weeks ago) I had to ditch J’Dior :*( waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!- strong headaches and that funny dog smell again! (gave it to my mom who is a Chanel #5 person but she likes it and it smells good on her), and I kept the Dior Accent 2 which still “works”
Just remembered after Claiborne, before White Linen there was this one from Cacharel called Noa that was so awesome!

    • Bela T

Wait! LOL Noa was after White Linen when I couldn’t wear it anymore, I was in my 20’s during the 90s LOL Oh how I wish I could still wear that! smelled gorgeous!

  • Sandy

Love’s Baby Soft was my intro as well. But the first “upscale” fragrance I ever bought was “Coriandre” from Jean Couturier. It was in a display on the counter of a ritzy drugstore (back in the day there were really such things!) and with one spray I was hooked. No friend knew the scent but they all said it smelled like me. I tracked it down on either Amazon or eBay a few years ago and bought a bottle, but it’s not the same. Maybe it’s my body chemistry; I also think I remember reading that it was reformulated at some point.

  • Melissa

I tried loves baby soft as well as Jean Nate, didn’t like either one. Felt like odd girl out. Then Charlie. Meh. At 15, I was hot stuff wearing Scoundrel but it was never quite right. Not sure who introduced me to Chanel No 5 but we’ve been together ever since. I did cheat and buy YSL Paris, White Shoulders, and EA Red Door once. Also tried Coco but it was too strong. The new Mon Paris is very similar to the original.

  • Rachel

As a kid, Avon Sweet Honesty; as a teen, Coty Exclamation or Emeraude; and then late teens a boyfriend bought me Chanel No 5 and Liz Claiborne. A maniac was born.

  • Emily

I am at work so only scanned people’s responses, but does anyone remember a perfume called Design? That was EVERYTHING to me. That, and a Liz Claiborne in a triangle shaped bottle, and another one with squares stacked up, no recollection of the names, but remember the bottles well. Then Calvin Klein Eternity and there was one other too, Obsession maybe? Lancome’s Tresor. Then I went dark on perfumes for years and years and years, and am now only very slowly reintroducing them. Wearing Kate Spade Walk on Air today, nice but I think I spritzed a little too much, as it was interfering with my breakfast!

  • katrosado

I wore Charlie and Ciara in high school but I was never crazy about them. It wasn’t until I wore KL and then Fendi in the early to mid 80’s that I began to find my type of scents.

I still wear woody scents and good patchouli really likes my skin. I recently bought Angel Muse which is a bit linear but it suits me for a day time scent.

  • Moda31

Hmm it’s hard to remember when you’ve been a perfume junkie for so long, but I’d probably say Gucci Rush, Carolina by Carolina Herrera, and maybe Gap Dream.

  • Susan

Mine was White Shoulders. It’s WAY too floral for me now, but it was the scent my sister-in-law wore and back then I fell in love with it. It was the only perfume I used for years. I probably still have some around because I used to get a new bottle for every gift-giving occasion, whether I needed it or not!

    • Dora

When I was a kid, I read a book where the main character’s mother wore White Shoulder and it sounded so glamorous. It STILL sounds that way to me.

  • Dora

Definitely Liz Claiborne and the Issey Miyake perfume in the tall triangular bottle and there was another — it had a short, one-word name like “See” but that’s not it (there is a See by Chloe and Si by Armani, and those aren’t it). I would love to remember it but I can’t remember anything about it! Anyway, from there it was on to Chanel — I tried a bottle of #5 because it seemed so classic but it’s terrible on me — and then wore Allure for years. Oh, and Calyx!

  • Emily

Technically I got my first fragrance when somebody bought me a bottle of something from Hollister for Christmas one year (yikes) but I count Vera Wang Princess as my first love!

  • katherine reynolds

I wore Avon Hawaiian White Ginger to my first day of kindergarten in 1966! Later, something called Rain, Charlie, my mom’s Tigris…But I would wear White Ginger again if available !

  • Randi MacDonald

Love’s baby soft. Jean Nate’, remember that??? Then Vanilla Fields. Finally, Opium( which I still wear today).

  • Li

I come back reading the replies and am surprised that there is no mention of ysl baby doll. That was my favorite in my 20s since the bottle was so pretty and I love fruity scents. I think that has been reformulated too if it is still available for sale. I do like the scent of Chloe but actually do not want to use bc I think everyone uses it now. I refuse to pay over $100 for niche fragrances but I currently bought a huge bottle of Atelier Cologne Pomelo Paradis bc I’m older and it’s one of the few fragrances I can wear without getting a headache.

  • Isabella Muse

Hey guys! I didn’t reply to every single one of you but I’m reading and loving all these replies about fragrances from your past. Some of which I never heard of 🙂

Thanks for participating! I’m having a blast reading all the comments!

    xoxo!

  • Diane

I loved my mom’s Emeraude. I also loved Love’s Baby Soft. Jean Nate, I loved the towelettes I could carry in my purse. Avon had a perfume called Persian Wood which I just adored

  • smellmyhead

When I was a wee teenager, I loved the idea of a signature scent, and I’d spend my weekly allowance on drugstore perfumes, trying to find the smell that would be “me” for life. Coty Wild Musk, Emeraude, Exclamation!, Revlon Intimate, Revlon Intimate Musk… Then I discovered Yves Rocher, and it was Chevrefeuille, Magnolia (!!!), Milrose, and finally…Ispahan. Oh, Ispahan. I thought for sure that Ispahan was *ME*, forever (yeah, I was…seventeen, by then?) – and I dabbled a bit with The Body Shop fragrance bar in the early 90s, but yep, Ispahan. …Then I developed the same fragrance allergies which had plagued my mother (I don’t know how she survived my teen years, really I don’t), when I was in my mid-twenties. No jasmine, ylang-ylang, gardenia, no “musk” – basically, no “sexy” base notes, ever. And then, around the time I turned 30, I had an experience which caused me to decide that lavender (essential oil – I didn’t make a distinction, at that time, *which* lavender essential oil) would be my signature, and I’ve been literally anointing my head with lavender ever since. I’ll sometimes wear a perfume oil blend on my wrists, but in general I’m just a human aromatherapy lamp, subliminally telling everyone around me to chill the eff out.

My first scent was VS body sprays (Sweet Pea!! and like you, I don’t like it anymore haha), but what really got me hooked on fragrance was Giorgio Armani Aqcua di Gioa. Such an amazing scent and I still love it! I remember my college roommate use to use it and I always wondered what that scent was! Then, Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Florale was my obsession. I think if you like one of these, then you’ll definitely like the other 🙂

My introduction into the world of perfume was via Yardley’s “Oh! de London”, Avon’s “Elusive” and Guerlain’s “Jicky” (which I adored because it was a favorite of George Harrison’s first wife Pattie Boyd, of whom I was a HUGE fan)..and, when paired with my favorite lipstick “Juliet’s Blush” from Yardley’s Poetry Collection (circa 1968), you couldn’t tell me nothing. (yep, I’m old, LoL)!!! 😀

I friggin’ love this post!! I forgot about soooo many of these fragrances!

For me, it was Ralph Lauren Ralph (the classic one in the blue bottle), which was a beautiful scent, Clinique Happy (perfect for all occasions), and JLo Glow for when I wanted to smell more sensual and sexy. I’m sure there were others I wore but those were the ones I remember wearing consistently from an early age. Ahh, such memories…

    • FrugalCat

Yes! I am remembering even more fragrances now that everyone is sharing their memories. How about Lauren by Ralph Lauren (in that square brown glass bottle) and Tranquil Breezes by Victoria’s Secret? That was very early 90’s, when VS first got into the fragrance game.

Men’s scents? In high school all the guys wore either Polo, Drakkar Noir, or Halston Z-14. My first boyfriend used to steal his dad’s (or granddad’s) Old Spice. Thank goodness Axe hadn’t been invented yet.

Alright FrugalCat you and I are on the same wave, I was JUST right now thinking that Muse should start a thread on what Men’s fragrances drove us women up the wall! I can name 3 right now and they still do! LOL
OMG Tranquil Breezes! Given to me as a gift, wore it, broke out in a HUGE rash it looked like I had 2 hickeys given to me by an Octopus with giant lips! LMAO!

If Exclamation and Baby Soft (less so) don’t apply, then DEFINITELY Sunflower! I loved that stuff so much and it also made me feel like an adult when I first got it!

  • Esther Ramirez

I loved Tommy Hilfiger, Cool Water and Curve – but I would steal my sister’s Exclamation and the Colors perfume. I also like one called Dare!

  • Paola

Omg great question! I was obsessed with my grandmother’s Nina Ricci L’aire du Temp! I used to grab that beautiful bottle with the bird on top and smell it every time I would visit her! In high school I loved Gap Dream and Versace Red Jeans!!

  • McRachel

Oh, for me it was Love’s Baby, Soft Coty Wild Musk, Poison, and Gloria Vanderbilt. I also went through a Sunflowers phase and a VS Amber Romance phase.

  • Chris

Difficult question to answer — probably first fragrance was Coty’s Muguet des Bois but eventually graduated to Cacharel’s Anais Anais. Also liked Jovan Musk as a teenager. I then became enamored with the Givenchy line of fragrances — still like them (Amarige, Givenchy III and Dahlia Divin). Lancôme’s Hypnose, Midnight Rose and La Vie Est Belle are my 3 favorites from that fragrance house. Great discussion topic!

I went straight to Guerlain Samsara, lol. It’s the first perfume I ever tried that didn’t give me an instant headache. I learned very quickly that I do well with orientals that many other people think are too heavy, while straight-up florals and candy-sweet scents tend to give me major sinus headaches. I have a hard time with almost everything with a lot of jasmine, lily of the valley, or rose notes. And one of the ones being brought up very often in this thread, Vanilla Fields, absolutely makes me nauseated whenever I smell it. The girls in my 8th grade class would cover themselves in it after gym class, to the extent that it was sickening. I still can’t stand it, lol.

My very first perfume was Night Rythms! Very random but I felt so grown up. Body Shop Dewberry, Youth Dew and Spellbound were also my faves. And I will never forget getting Victoria’s Secret Vanilla Lace for Christmas one year, the very first day I wore in 6th grade the teacher yelled who is baking cookies……I could have died and never wore again.

  • mushroomjoey

I am still at the gateway and mine are Chloe, Chloe Love Story, and Tory Burch! I tried them from the Sephora perfume sampler and I had to get the roller balls!

  • Madeleine

Be never too Busy to be Beautiful’s Keep it Fluffy started my perfume obsession. Sadly no longer available so I treasure the last of the bottle I still have x

    • Isabella Muse

Oh don’t chat Keep it Fluffy with me, it saddens me they never brought it back to the Gorilla line. Hint: There are dupes around 🙂 if you look hard enough that smell exactly like it!

  • Valerie

Dior’s Poison! My high school boyfriend got it for me for Christmas our junior year. It still takes me back there when I smell it.

  • Julie

YES!!! All the drugstore perfumes, and Avon, Pearls and Lace, and Sweet Honesty. I loved Xia Xiang, Ciara, and Ciara Female Fatale, it was purple, I wish I could find it. My first grown up perfumes were Obsession, and I had all of Estee Lauder. My favorite is Angel now.
