What’s the Weirdest Ingredient You’ve Come Across In Your Skincare?

I got home late last night but was bound and determined to keep my eyes open and watch episode 1 of Preacher and boy was it so worth staying up late for! Now I have to make time to catch up on episode 2! Joe Gilgun is solid gold brilliance as Cassidy! He’s witty with his lines, his accent is spot on, and he just looks the part.

If you caught the episode I’m pretty sure you know where this post is headed right? A rather frank discussion about foreskins and the fact they made their way into moisturizer took place in Tulip’s beloved car (is that a Chevelle Sedan or a Chevy Impala?). I mean, we’ve all been there right? Road trip, weird discussions about whether Goofy’s a dog or not? I’ve totally been there many times in my life.

Anyway, according to Cassidy foreskins have somehow made their way into our moisturizers and they are apparently good for collagen or something along those lines. I dunno if I believe a damn thing he says but weirder things have made their way into my skincare.

What’s the weirdest ingredients you’ve come across in your skincare?

I guess mine would be snail secretion? I honestly can’t thing of anything stranger….! Don’t get me wrong I’m all about snail anything in my moisturizer but just the general thought of snails and slime well, it all kind of freaks me out if I think about it too much!

I’m positive there are weirder ingredients in some skincare than mere snails.

What do you think?

And please don’t tell me your latest moisturizer contains foreskin….!

Share some of the weirdest stuff you’ve found in your skincare!

Has it influenced whether or not you’d use it on your face?

Or do you just close your eyes and try not to think about it!

(TetrasodiumEdta), also known as a chelating agent made with formaldehyde. It’s in lots of skincare and haircare items. And probably in the most beloved product, Micellar Water. The only reason that I even figured this out was because every time I saturated a cotton pad, after washing my face I could smell it. (Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate) is also found in micellar water and usage of this preservative is restricted in some countries due to inhalation toxicity levels. Should we be slathering this all over our faces??

I adore micellar water because it’s a quick and effective way of removing makeup and cleansing. But for me, I really can’t stand the smell!! I am going to start researching if any brands have a natural micellar water, maybe Pacifica will answer my prayers. Fingers crossed!

At least we’ll be preserved very well for the next life right? Bad joke 🙂 but yeah, I can’t believe it’s in micellar water either and quite a few other beauty products too! :-/

yup! likewise! Typically it’s a marine placenta of some kind lol not so much a human one thank god haha!

I used to say I drew the line at invasive procedures, but I’d try anything topical on my face. That was before synthetic snake venom (syn-ake), which is in the Nip + Fab “Viper Venom” products and lots of others. Probably nothing wrong with it, but I’m still not going there!

Love snail. Moisture with no clogging. I did see sea slug somewhere. The jellyfish masks are well accepted and reviewed. Starfish is now pretty universal, at least in Mizon. Let us not forget that carmine, if not synthetic, is derived from beetles. Maybe that’s why so many are allergic! Nothing surprises me, esp when it comes to the pseudo-botoxes. Anything with even a mild paralytic effect is going to have a strange provenance. Looking forward to all the answers.

I love Joe as Cassidy too! He makes an already funny character even more hilarious yet very sympathetic and human (considering that he’s a vampire). I’m just catching up on Misfits now and he’s hysterical in that too.

And I agree about snail extract. The first time I heard about it was when Misshua sent an email on April 1 and I seriously thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke.

    • Isabella Muse

oh no no I’m sorry Robert Sheehan has my heart in Misfits 😀 hehe! LOL! I can see why! Snail cream+april fool’s def feels like a joke 😀

      • Pamela

I miss Nathan too but I alternated between laughing and wanting to punch him in the face. That kind of character really has to strike the right balance (which Sheehan did most of the time).

I guess I’m not too adventuress in my skin products. AHA’s is about as fancy as I get.

        • Isabella Muse

I just have such a soft spot for Sheehan! I thought he was too adorable in Young Blades as King Louis! ;-D

          • Pamela

Ooh. I’ve never heard of Young Blades, I’ll have to look it up since it seems right up my alley.

Did you follow the BBC Musketeers a couple years ago with Peter Capaldi and and Luke Pasqualino? Swashbuckling goodness 😉

Snail mucus!!! An Australian brand called Napoleon Persia uses this in their primer.

Bird’s nest extract! It’s in a Korean sleeping pack I have. But what exactly did they extract? Stuff from twigs and grasses? Bird poop? Don’t laugh at the latter; I’ve read that traditional Japanese geisha white makeup was made from nightingale droppings.

The weirdest thing I’ve read of lately in the beauty arena is that apparently a YouTuber showed how she used her boyfriend’s….. parts in place of a beauty blender sponge. I REFUSE TO LOOK. I AM NOT GOING THERE!!

    • Isabella Muse

lol it’s actually sort of grosser than bird poop and twigs. It’s made from the hardened saliva that birds build their nests with. It actually makes for a tasty soup! I know, thinking about it makes me cringe but I promise it really does taste good! I have a few sleeping packs, facial masks, and moisturizers with it and it’s actually pretty darn great for skin haha! LOL! yeah I saw that one. crazy! I watched it on Instagram lol!

I swear that I would not use foreskin infused skincare even if scientific studies proved that it was the fountain of youth. I would, however, use placenta infused skincare as long as it was not human placenta. I am such a prejudiced sexist bIt6H, aren’t I?
Also, I would not use bee venom infused skincare b/c I care about declining bee populations, yet I don’t care about snakes so I would use venom infused skincare if it were helpful, whether it be synthetic or natural!
I am a self proclaimed meanie

Horse oil! It sounds gross but it works well
I’ve also used emu oil before

  • Chris

And to think I was worried about the Cochineal Insect dye in my Good & Plenty candy!

I thought of the snail slime but someone already mentioned it.

  • Renu

Ya know this coffee where the beans/seeds are ingested by some goat or the other, and then it comes out at the other end, and that’s what makes that coffee taste so amazing? I’ve never tried it, but after hearing about that one, skincare seems tame LOL. For me, it would probably have to be donkey oil in K-beauty. I have no idea what it means, but I presume it’s a secretion of some sort?

    • Isabella Muse

Oh god LOL! the mental image! LOL it’s donkey’s milk and thankfully not oil ;-D

  • Silvia

Anything snail poop, slime, gooey stuff which I haven’t tried and not sure I want to but just as curiosity killed the cat I might. Is it good?
I believe I did read in Geisha about that nightingale moisturizing thing! Also don’t some lipsticks used to be be mixed with cocoroaches skin or something used for its color?! Consistency not sure but hell to the power of NO! Yuck! Can you imagine! Lol!

  • Jeanine

Look if foreskin makes me look and feel younger…BRING IT ON!!!
