Musings of the Day: Take It and Make It Better, Drugstore Cosmetics

I know alot of you enjoy drugstore brands (within the US that is) but I haven’t really been on board with them myself. I haven’t caught drugstore fever since I was in high school and rarely do I buy much makeup in drugstores. Up until I started my blog I rarely even ventured into a drugstore to buy much of anything. Well, times have changed since many requests come in daily for cheaper makeup options so I head to various drugstores to see if I can find decent makeup items.

Today, I have a Cheap Beauty Challenge post that’s upcoming in a few. As I was typing it out last week I realized something that could get me excited about drugstore cosmetics. This in turn gave me my idea for today’s Musings of the Day.

If you’re not a fan of drugstore cosmetics or you like them but wish they were a bit better this question should appeal.

How would you make drugstore cosmetics better?

What would make you want to buy more from your local drugstores?

Packaging? Pigmentation? Price?

I thought about this and as much as I wanted to say PACKAGING! I realized one thing that would be even better than packaging would be online advertisement. When you walk into a drugstore it’s rather nifty that they have various displays with new collections however have you ever noticed you can’t find ANY info about these releases on the brands websites? Take for example the Maybelline Focus on Gold Collection (I’m reviewing this in the Cheap Challenge). I can’t find a word about it anywhere on the Maybelline site.

How great would it be if all these little collections they release would have better online push. Maybe e-mail alerts? Or a website for the collections? Something that allows us to know that the releases are out. Most time collection releases are rarely pimped out online. I read someone mention that the Diana Keaton Collection was never on the L’Oreal site and when they called L’Oreal even the company didn’t know about it.

I think, possibly, US drugstore brands would be more appealing if I could get more info about releases and what was released with the collection, etc….at this point it’s more of a “surprise!” whenever you walk into the drugstore.

Packaging definitely would help too but online advertisement would be even better.

What do you think?

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. I agree! more push online and pictures would do drugstore brands a lot more better.

For me, I would say quality, but then I don’t think they would be drugstore brands and cheapter than more expensive brands if they did. Colour would be a good start, as a lot of drugstore brands get the middle skin tone right, but don’t seem to get extremely pale or extremely dark worked out.

heck yes sarah agreed 😀 more push online would really be helpful. Drugstore brands in Asian are incredible not sure why we can’t bring such quality to the US!

I love looking forward to collections, like i’m always googling ‘dior spring 2010’ etc just to look at what pretty offerings they have on for the season. If this could happen for brands like Rimmel, L’oreal etc it would be great, except they seem to release things at extremely odd times, and it always seems to be scattered around different stores across the UK.

thats my rant over though! 😛 x

sarah same prob here my friend. they do no advertising for anything online in regards to drugstore stuff and if they do it’s really late and all the items are sold out or difficult to find etc……they got these new crystal shadows and it took ages to track them down, very pretty but I’d have never known about them if it wasn’t for the fact someone blogged them. rant rant rant…totally know what you mean!

For me, I’d have to say color selection and price. Why do they think that everyone who goes shopping for drugstore makeup is beige? I’m personally fairly pale, and it can be hard to find a match that actually works well for me.
As for price, I’m Canadian, so everything they sell here is ballooned in price, so I’d rather just go to Sephora and by an Urban Decay pallete than a few CG eyeshadows, even if my boyfriend doesn’t see the logic in it. XD

I know right kendra what the hell! LOL! It’s kinda pricey here too, not as bad as canada but def pricey….some mascaras are $12 USD and for that I can head to mac and get one for $14 USD ya know?
