Stila Spring Collection 2010: Stila Black Diamond Mascara Review and Swatches

Hey chicklets!

Everyone is pretty excited about the Stila Spring Collection 2010 eh? I know I am. BTW, I love this, the collection is actually called Dust to Diamonds. For some reason I find this such an oddly fitting title for the collection as in some aspects it really Stila’s story isn’t it? Earlier this year we all cried in woe that Stila was going bankruptcy. We weren’t sure what was going to happen to our beloved brand but in swoops Lynn Tilton, now the new owner of Stila, who saves the day and Stila from demise. Happy Days! So indeed at one point there was dust but this year Stila has come out diamonds hasn’t it?

The Stila Dust to Diamonds Collection was actually inspired by Lynn Tilton and features my favorite finish….shimmer, sparkle, and glittery bits that shine as bright as a gem.

Jump ahead to take a peek at the new Stila Black Diamond Mascara.

Stila Black Diamond Mascara is available for a limited time in two shades Black Shimmer (Black with Silver Shimmer) and Blue Shimmer (Black with Blue Shimmer). The mascara is swirled with genuine diamond powder to add a glistening effect to lashes and also promises to bring out the color of your eyes.

The effects of the Black Diamond Mascara are difficult to pick up with a camera but indeed it does add a subtle sparkle finish to lashes. It’s really nothing dramatic unless you’re looking very closely but you will notice a hint of either silver or blue shimmer depending on the shade you use. The mascara sports a standard straight line applicator with a nice full brush. It’s a traditional applicator that works well at lengthening lashes and offering a nice curl.

I tried both the Black Shimmer and Blue Shimmer shades. Black is of course my favorite as it’s easily paired up with most all eye looks. Blue Shimmer is a nice one for pairing up with blue or aqua shadows. Blue Shimmer swatches a bit off sadly as it does appear a black matte mascara in my photo, sorry about that.

Overall, I do think the novelty of the product is the fact that it adds that pretty twinkle of shimmer to lashes. I think they are worthy of a check out as they perform well as a mascara with the added benefits of that hint of sparkle. If you’re all for a more traditional mascara with a unique twist, Stila Black Diamond Mascara might be your girl.

Is Stila Black Diamond Mascara on anyone’s Spring wish list?

  • Paloma

meh…these don’t even add volume or lengthen….waste of money, really.

    • the Muse

aw sorry to hear you no likey paloma! just keep in mind my close up shots tend to stick b/c def good volume and length for a traditional applicator 🙂

  • Ida

Oh those little sparkles on the lashes are way cute. 🙂 Stila Black Diamond Mascara added to my wish list!

  • Elizabeth

Right now I’m pretty faithful to BE’s luminous lashes but I’ll probably check this out too because I love sparkle! 🙂

    • the Muse

oh elizabeth I have a few of those! 😀 They are really nice!! I like the sparkle in my mascara too 😀 Sana, a Japanese brand, makes this comb on shimmer that’s fabulous. I really dig the Stila Black Shimmer one right now as it produces the same effect 🙂 Weeeeeeeeeeeeee glitter!

  • suz

skip…my eyes are on 5 other Japanese mascara’s instead that one which has shimmer and I want to see how it looks.

Never used blue mascara…how is it?

    • the Muse

mmmm suz it’s not blue just a shimmer that’s blue so black on blue but have tried blue mascaras, MJ actually made one a few summer’s ago and I likey 😀

    Muse, got a question…

They use diamond powder to cut jade, which is one of the hardest materials to cut. Wouldn’t diamond powder near or in the eye be dangerous? Thanks!

    • the Muse

      hey jess,

I can ask stila and see how they reply but I honestly don’t know. I’m sure Stila takes into consideration these things and if anything that is infused in the formula that would be a danger to eyes would not be included. I always take the idea of real diamonds, pearls, rubies, etc.. as sounding extra special but not sure how much is every really included in the formula ya know? Bare Escentuals also does the crushed diamond thing as well as rubies and pearls. Unsure how dangerous this is to your eyes but in my opinion I doubt large companies would include harmful ingredients. On that note also Diamond Powder may not be an actual reference to diamond powder at all….could be a cosmetic ingredient? Not sure 🙂

I know it didn’t completely answer your question but I’ll see what Stila says/advises 🙂 and post back if they reply!

  • the Muse

    hi jess

as a follow up this is infused with diamond powder and should be eye safe (don’t quote me) pure diamond powder would be used to cut jade and infused diamond powder should be safe.

Again I’m def not a chemist 🙂 but I hope this helps. As soon as I hear from Stila I’ll be sure to update!

    • Jessica

Thanks Muse for taking the time, I appreciate it! Our eyes are important you know, even more so than pretty glittery eyelashes, which I would love to have. lol. 🙂

  • dina

i was wondering about this but the price was scaring me off. thank you for the great review 🙂

    • the Muse

my pleasure dina!!!!!!!! It’s pretty traditional mascara but the cute sparkles are really fun! 😀

  • Mollie

Haha, I was wondering the same thing about diamond powder near my eyes.

But this looks so PRETTY! Sparklies are my favorite. I’m all for glitter.

    • the Muse

hey mollie no word back yet but will let you know a for sure answer about safety as soon as I hear 😀 yay for glitter!

  • Nia

I tried the shimmer mascara Lancome out out a while ago and the twinkling out of the corner of my eyes made me mad.
So no, no Stila Diamond mascara for me 😉

    • the Muse

aw nia you’re breaking my heart! Love me some shimmer sweets 😀 but understand I feel this way about fiberwig mascara, feels like my lashes are in my eyes 😛

  • tia

I just recieved this product and I liked the effect however there was no real buiding of the lashes which i need. I tried to apply reg mascara and this over it but it didnt show. Im willing to give it another try. Maybe next time ill wait til my coat of mascara is really dry before applying as a top layer.

    • Courtney

I’d recommend using a clear coat to lengthen THEN use this one. That should enhance everything. I’ll test it when I get home as mine was just delivered and I’m stuck at work without it…

  • Jovanna

I LOVE these too! I noticed that the mascara does not plump my lashes, and the brush can make it gloopy while applying. However, I love sparkles on my eyelashes w/o it being glitter (professional work, blah). I recommend using a clean mascara brush that does not come with the tube. I curl my lashes and it doesn’t help with the clumping together, maybe its too wet? I LOVE how it’s transparent so you can see how much you have left, the BEST thing EVER!!!!

  • Keeyoun

I just bought a palette today at ulta and this was a free gift, haven’t tried it yet but should be interesting.
