MAC & Mickey Contractor Makeup Collection

At first glance I got super excited when I seen some sort of collab with MAC and Mickey….yeah, I was thinking the mouse. Turns out they actually mean Mickey Contractor. He’s actually the Makeup Artistry for India, thanks Google! Although his name is commonly associated with Bollywood, his collection is pretty tame.

I think MAC had a specific skin tone in mind for this collection but the face charts speak differently. Don’t you agree? Has MAC ever done a Bollywood Collection, off topic I know, but that would be brilliant wouldn’t it? Some of the shades look real keepers and the concealers have my eye but the shades are definitely not suitable for most. The collection won’t appeal to the masses however one or two gems in the rough may capture the eye of those with fairer or medium skin tones where as olive, caramel, and darker will find the real joy here.

What do you think?

The rosy nude lipstick at the top looks like something I’d want to check out! A bollywood collection would be fantastic, I can already see how the LE palettes would look 😀

What I don’t really understand is how the foundation and concealers in NC40++ are limited edition here? That’s not my color so I don’t know but are those shades usually not available? Then are people supposed to buy this and then not be able to repurchase later (or have to hoard like mad if they want to keep using MAC? I would not want my go-to foundation to be limited edition for sure! What is the point of buying it since if I like it, I can’t really continue using it..? Or if it is popular enough, will MAC make it permanent?

    • the Muse

god yes Hilary! that would rock ;-D I’m not sure as I am not familiar with MAC shades but I’m assuming these shades are geared towards a more caramel color skin plus the moisture formula isn’t normally around!? don’t quote me ;-D I agree on the LE factor, it’s possible it’ll come back at some point but who wants to play a guessing game with something as important as a base!

  • Ru

The .# is a range variation for that foundation color, but for someone like me whose NC30-35, those are still very deep colors. I agree that if you find your color match, it would only be for that bottle or two until you run out! I look forward to this collection because as someone with olive/brown skin, I don’t always feel like a lot of collections gear towards darker skin colors. However, I’m a little disappointed by the models as well, I wished they would have picked… more than one model to represent the different shades of a Bollywood lady.

    • the Muse

agreed Ru on the models…they look pretty fair of skin for this collection!? WTH?

      • Sara

Agreed, too much bronzer and darkening of eyebrows does not an Indian lady make…..

Bollywood is over the top with the colors, costumes, musical numbers, plots, acting, etc…and this collection is sooo toned down. Am I missing something?

        • the Muse

agreed sara plus the entire matte black isn’t flattering at all…I’d go for golds, cranberries, coppers…those are def more gorg on caramel skin ;-D I thought since the collab is with a MA that has done work in Bollywood that it would be more flashy…guess not!?

  • Erin

Haha, as soon as I saw Mickey on Temptalia…I got all excited thinking it was the mouse too! Then I was very sad. Nothing against Mickey Contractor because I know nothing about him, but he can’t be as awesome as Mickey Mouse lol.

    • the Muse

ha same erin! I was like MOUSE?! ;-D I didn’t know about him much either but I googled him and he has a rather interesting background particularly one in Bollywood films, absolutely adore a good bollywood romance with great song ;D

      • jamie

i’d rather this mickey than mickey mouse, it’s more wallet friendly for me! lol i completely emptied my wallet and my vault with that disney villain collection i DO NOT need another mickey mouse collection!!!

i’m running around the house screaming woohoo cuz i am not yet running into debt lol

  • MariaC

Muse, If this isn’t much to ask – I’d love to see your review of this collection.

    • the Muse

def maria I see a few things that look good! wish the concealers would work for me!? but have to see ’em, could prove too dark though 🙁

  • Mary the Muse Militant

Some nice eyeshadows especially the deep coral caramel one and the mid pink lipstick but nothing else much to sing about.
The models do look far lighter than NC41 and down.
Can’t keep up with all the collections from Mac.
Thing is I say that every month of every year ! 🙂

    • the Muse

agreed mary little disappointed about the models actually! god tell me ’bout it, too many!

  • Jasmine

I usually have your blog and read it almost everyday , but I have to say that IMO that your statement

“The collection won’t appeal to the masses…”

Is a little offensive. Clearly this collection is targeted to WOC , but MAC is am international compan and their products can be bought in almost every country. WOC must not be the “masses” where you live, but they are in many other places in the world.

    • the Muse

Hi Jasmine no offense was meant. I live in the US and have a largely US based readership so definitely was speaking to those readers. The collection isn’t meant for fair to medium collections which is great as many brands don’t do nearly enough collections for tanned or darker complexions. Not sure how I offended you but hopefully you see my point.

  • Soo

can’t wait to see swatches of the Mehr lipstick and Siahi fluidline, they both seem like they’d be colors I’d buy.

  • MariaC

I am so intrigued by this collection, and please correct me if i’m wrong. Does the face chart correspond to the model, in which case she must be an NC 43 or so. Because the face chart shows the foundation shade to be NC 43.5. I guess the photography/photoshopping is making her appear lighter than she is.

    • the Muse

I think all the photos look very light Maria, doesn’t really match the idea and theme of the collection!

    • Ru

She is def NOT NC 43… this annoys me quite a bit. If you are appealing to brown skin, please put some people in the ad that we can relate to. Also, I do think she IS of Indian descent, but not upon first look. I really had to dig for her features to figure this out.

      • the Muse

she does not look Indian at all to me ru! That was what totally confused me as I thought the collection had more of an Indian vibe and that’s what they were theming the shades too but the models don’t look Indian to me at all!?

  • Gia

When I scanned this I swear I thought it was Mickey Mouse and got all excited! Then I was like ohhh not that Mickey! haha! I like the lipglasses but I’m a super pale girl so most of these won’t look good on me. So not really a great collection for me. And I don’t get the promo pics! It’s geared towards darker/olive tones but yet the models are really pale! And why limited edition foundation colors? That doesn’t make sense to me either.

    • the Muse

me too gia I was like OMG mouse! that’s my first thought when I seen it ;-D I really don’t get the models at all, so strange.

      • Gia

Being the palest Arab you will ever see, ( i don’t wear Mac foundation since none are light enough for me) I understand Indian/Middle Easterns do come in diff shades. But with the foundation colors shown it just seems to go with Marketing sense and have a darker model to showcase them. Or even have a few diff models with diff skin tones sorta like the all age sex, race line they had.

        • the Muse

that’s what I thought as well gia but I think people took my comments wrong maybe? absolutely wasn’t intentionally out to hurt people’s feelings and I do think the shades represent a more olive or caramel skin type. The models just look bronzed to me as if that isn’t their natural skin tone…but maybe I’m nuts here ;D!

  • reeny

great collection! cant wait till its out at the mac counter! thanks for the post muse!

  • Mara

Being Asian & NC30, I’m more excited about this range and the Peacocky collection than Cham-Pale and Stylishly Yours. The Yash lippie and Flesh lipglass are calling to me…

  • Jenny

The mid-tone blue pink & the fuchsia lipsticks are screaming buy me now! Its the only thing I like from this collection because imagine all that liquid foundation and dark colors on my NC20 skin! lol
But hey, girls with darker skin tones are so lucky, this collection seems really pretty for them! 🙂

  • Promise

I want the green fluidline!!! The finishing powder looks interesting, and I also want the gold blush for a highligher? Do you think it would work as a highlighter?
Dang, you, MAC, I was wanting to save some money after Christmas, but it seems my list just keeps getting longer! I want B. Bella Bamba, the 4 Burt’s Bees solid perfumes, and a couple of things from ACW….what to do, what to do….BTW, have you purchased the BBees solid perfumes, yet? The only place I’ve seen them is on their website so far…thanks! 😀

    • the Muse

have not yet promise 🙂 haven’t seen ’em bu will give the good word when I get some! 🙂 Bella bamba totally worth a haul imho!

  • Nia

Loving the green and purple eyeshadow. but that’s it. I might be interested in the corrector duo, but I have to order online for this one, so I do not know if this is working for me or not. The rest is too warm for me.

I like that they just did not take the Bollywood colours and translated it, but made a collection that would work skintone wise for Indian woman as well. Great idea and implementation.

What do you have your sights set on?

  • Claudia

I’m still drooling over the last MAC face chart. that smoky eye and nude lip is AMAZING.
so getting the Yash lippie and Sur blush 🙂

  • Kurvaki

The collection will appeal to a large part of the world population. I usually love to read the reviews here but am suprised by some of the comments being made about what some people perceive as being “Indian” for your information Indian women range from the lightest to darkest of skin tone and varying features from sharpest to the soft and range in eye colour from blue, green, brown to black. I’m sure many women will love the collection and besides given there are several realeases from mac I’m sure there is something for everyone in the new year.

    • the Muse

hi kurvaki we are merely discussing the collections color range and how the promo models aren’t exactly what we had in mind for it. there are indeed many forms of the Indian woman, I believe were just thinking in terms of this collection being for those women who happen to have caramel, olive, or darker skin tones as I believe that’s what mac was thinking when made the collection up considering the foundation shades included here.

  • lia

For everyone discussing how the models in the promo pics aren’t what they expected, think of it like this: Mickey works with Bollywood actresses. All (yes, I mean all) of them are fair skinned. That’s just how it works- fair skin is prized in India, and there are many women who fit the bill of NC35ish (as there are many others who fit NC50 and higher). Personally, as someone of Indian descent, these models do look Indian to me, and honestly, even though I’m darker (NC45 or so they say), I’m just glad someone out there is paying attention to how different olive skin tones are and how hard it can be to match foundation to them.

Now, if only one of the top 22 stores happened to be near me and I could actually get matched, lol.

    • the Muse

hey lia..thanks for your input!!!!! 🙂 I do think they range fits more in the higher 40-50 range in this case so they are def going to the darker skin tone here. aw any chance of playing the guessing game and ordering online !??! 🙁

  • kat

oh oh oh gorgeous…i ♥ the lipstick on the model. it looks like the perfect nude… what color is it? the mocha peachy?

  • Pooja

Mac should have actually taken a Bollywood actress as their model, would have made more sense as the collection is by a bollywood makeup artist?

    • the Muse

would love that myself pooja 😀 kareena kapoor? aishwarya rai? someone awesome like that!
