Sephora Double Contouring Cream Blush Review & Swatches

I spent the better part, no joke, of an hour trying to pop open the new Sephora Double Contouring Cream Blush. I could not get it open for the life of me. It started with, oh cool new blush but progressed to me on the floor with the compact in my mouth with my teeth around it trying to get it open.

Seriously.

I tried everything but couldn’t get it open. I even wriggled a little screw driver under the lid and still nada.

Blush Challenge!

The top part (lid of the compact) is made of plastic but the bottom well is rubber. This design should have clicked with me and I should have realized it opened the same way Urban Decay Star Dust doh!

So don’t make the same as I made. Just squeeze the sides of the rubber bottom and the lid will flip open automatically. Don’t say I didn’t warn you as I don’t want to catch you with a scissor, knife, or screw driver trying to wriggle it open or worst with your teeth!

Packaging is rather brilliant once you get the knack for opening it. Just squeeze the sides and it flips open easily. I like techy little gadgetry packaging like this (apologies for the appearance of the blush, this is what happens when you can’t figure how to open it ha!)

For $14, do yourself a favor, purchase a few of these, you’ll be delighted not only with the funky packaging but the formula of the blush.

This cream to powder blush has a nice pop of color and glides across skin like butter. It has a soft, velvety texture that you can apply with fingertips or a brush. The weightless formula blends seamlessly into skin leaving behind a brilliant touch of color that builds super easily but hey, a little goes a long way here.

The best part is the wear time which weights in at at least 10 hours. I put it on in the morning and can get through my work day and into my night play without it fading away

The color I tried out was Poppy Pink which is a bright shade of neon-like coral. It’s a little scary in the pot but applies subtly for a bright pop of coral on cheeks or can be built up to a brighter finish should you like.

Overall, Sephora hits it out of the park with these. Only problem? It comes in only six shades. We need more variety.

Loves ’em!

Very Muse Approved for purchase.

I swatched these at my local Sephora the last time I visited and I really liked them too. I’m so glad they’re permanent! Sephora is really impressing me with their Sephora line lately. The cream lip stains and those sheer Clarins-looking crystal balms are also fantastic quality.

The only thing about these blushes that I had to complain about (I also had to take a few minutes to figure out how to open them, but besides that!)… would be that half of the shades are shimmery. And the shimmers are beautiful and golden, but BIG! I’m definitely going to buy all three of the non-shimmery shades though (#3, #5, #6). The texture and pigmentation are fab. 🙂

I agree jennifer, sephora has hit or miss products but these were lovely ;-D! def showing signs of improrvement lately. I agree, they really are HUGE, prob won’t be able to hit pan on some of these!

  • Butakimu

HAHAHA I seriously love the way you write ^-^

I was also struggling with these at store. I used my nails to pry it open. These were really impressive in terms of pigmentation and blendability!

    • the Muse

same tried nails, screw driver everything! dude could not get it open lol! finally figured out it was a simple squeeze method *HEAD DESK* lol!

  • elizabeth

Ok,ty for explaining how to open this, I was at Sephora the other day and I wanted to swatch it but couldn’t get it open!

  • Christina

Oh poor you! I hate tricky packaging. I’m so pathetic at getting lotion pumps or face wash pumps to pop up, no matter how many times I turn them. I give up and unscrew the top. LOL

Thanks for the review. I really love creme blushes, but only certain ones (like creme to powder) or matte work on my skin. 🙂 And to hear they lasted you 10 hours…I’m sold. lol 🙂

    • the Muse

HA me too christina! they always FAIL for me ;-D my pleasure! they last forever! I was really impressed with the wear!

  • kimkats

O mi….. I just looked those up on sephora.com… There are 3 of ’em that I wanna get my grubby lil paws on!! Apricot sheen, golden spice and rose glow sound absolutely right up my blushalley!

And now that I know that there’s a trick to getting the flippin’ things open, I won’t have to take a BMFH to open them! 😀

    • the Muse

they colors are so fab kim! I think you’ll love ’em ;D! haha and no teeth required!

  • Misato-san

    interesting, I love cream blushers!
When they’ll hit Italy I’ll check them out for sure 😀

  • anita

Thanks so much for reviewing these. I was curious about them and I am a cream blush fiend. Will be going to Sephora next week and will definitely be checking these out since I now know how to open them thanks to you.:)

  • Larie

LOL Muse, you just made my day. That was hilarious 😉 These look pretty amazing!

  • Comrade Garlic

These are amazing. Amazing. There is no way you will ever use one of these up. They also make a really nice lip color. They dry down nice on the lips, so all you need to do is either mix it with some balm or top i with gloss. For the lack of shades, the range is really nice. Apricot Sheen is the ubiquitous Orgasm dupe that all brands must have. It blends and has better staying power than the Orgasm Multiple.

This is so funny… I was just at my local Sephora , and I had the same issue with the packing… I was trying to open it and the thing just slipped out of my hands and flew over the air and landed on a poor lady next to me (she was laughing a lot) It took me a while to figure out how to open it! omg…. but yes the consistency is very cool and the colors are very pretty. I might get some too 😉

  • Harshleen

Awesome! I am so glad you approved these for purchase Muse….can’t wait to get my hands on them now!

  • Quinctia

Your story reminds me of the time I was very confused by UD’s facial primer until I figured out it works like a bottle of glue!

  • christmas

This color looks so beautiful! I have a hard time getting through blushes though so I rarely buy them… maybe I should. It sort of looks like the too faced blush that came in the fairy travel to go case and I did finish that….

  • monique

I love these blushes, the easiest way to open them is by squeezing the soft part it will flip open for you. I love how well these blend from cream straight to powder I must have more and they do need more colors!

  • Joan

I ordered the Poppy Pink from Sephora’s website and love the shade. It did look a little bright, but it’s a beautiful shade. I love the way the case opens. They should do that will all their blush. I think I read a little blurb on their website about how to open. If I wouldn’t have seen that, I would also have had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to open it. I do wish they had more shades that weren’t shimmery. If these do well, maybe they will come out with more shades. I’m very happy with all the new shades that came out in their powder blush.

      • Joan

I’m sorry. LOL. I do like the Tarte shimmers, though, because they don’t show up too shimmery.

        • the Muse

LOL no its ok I love how you brighten up my sparkly world with the good word of matte hahah!

          • Joan

I can’t tell you enough how much I love this site. Love reading and commenting. I find out so much good stuff since I signed up. Thanks.

  • Mary the Muse Militant

What a beautiful colour blush. Dear Sephora, I wish you would come back to England. We promise to buy buy buy if you do !

  • Majick

Muse, the mental images you conjured up for me were hilarious – thanks for the laugh today.

THis color is really pretty. I picked up the tri-color one by Smashbox in the coral color and I’m really on the fence about returning it. The highlighter is shimmer (I get that) and the bronze color is also shimmer (which I’m not really crazy about). The coral color is really pretty but so far I am not having much success blending it out properly. I’m not sure if it’s me or the product. I’ll give it a few more tries but…

  • Kate

LOL, I struggled to open mine for a few minutes, too. Thy should come with a sticker across the top that says, “squeeze me!”, along with two arrows pointing inward from the finger groove thingies. Anyway, I was surprised that I do LOVE this blush! Not normally a fan of cream blushes. Better in theory than practice for me. Even though I have dry skin. I always feel like creams are either tacky (ew) or too emollient and and thick, never drying, like I’m pushing the product around my face trying to get it to blend while it just sits there. Not these! They are, as you said, weightless and blend pretty seamlessly, and they look smooth and even with little effort. I got one called Golden Spice, a gorgeous warm rose with shimmer on my pale skin. Wish they came in more colors, preferably some cooler tones — mauves, plum, light pink, cooler brown for contouring. Great review! 🙂

  • Nikki

i want to try these! I think I’ll pick up coral flush and pink poppy. Do you think pink poppy would be too bright on fair skin?

  • Felicia

Wow, luckily I’ve read your review before buying because I would not know how to open these =) I bought Rose Glow (#5 – matte) and love it! It’s my first cream blush and the color is great, the formula is amazing and lasts pretty long on my skin. Hope they will come up with more shades… Thanks for the review!

    • the Muse

yay so glad you’re enjoying felicia really great shade you got ;-D my pleasure, damn the packaging puzzled me for a few there haha!

  • Gloria

Hi there, thanks for the awesome review. I’ve been wondering how this product is different from maybelline’s dream bouncy blush in terms of formula, wear time and all those other wonderful things; and whether there are other blushes that have a formula/consistency like the bouncy blush.

    Thank you!
