Maybelline Color Sensational The Porcelains Lipstick Afternoon Tea Review and Swatches

I’m a later hater. I do NOT do left overs. Anything reheated, microwaved, or re-served to me after a few hours or even a day will be promptly ignored. No, thank you. That must be why I’m not wild about the shade of Maybelline Color Sensational The Porcelains Lipstick I picked up, because dude, I look like death warmed over in the microwave with this shade on.

No likey!

Personally, I think the Maybelline Color Sensational The Porcelains Lipstick Collection will prove pretty tricky to pull off. These are all cream finishes in some really mod shades. Some folks can rock the socks off mod but me, I look deathly in a mod shade with a cream finish.

I picked up the color Afternoon Tea which looked like a lovely shade of dusky MLBB (my lips but better) pink.

Technically speaking it is a dusky shade of pink but once applied it seems to have a bit of a lilac vibe going on or mauve if you will. Perhaps, mauve is a better way to describe the shade and my eyes doth do deceive me making me believe it was dusky pink.

Either way I didn’t like the shade and damn straight the cream finish wasn’t me either so I applied it with clear gloss for the photo I took below to give it a better finish. Without the gloss, it looked chalky, patchy, and made my lips less than smooth.

The formula, as with most all Sensational Lipsticks, is drying as hell but throw a little cream into the mix and it becomes “Imma suck the life out of your lips” formula. It sits unnaturally a top my lips, provides zero hydration, and will indeed, look and apply terribly if you have less than smooth lips, I’m talking to you chapped, flaky lip girls.

Overall, The Porcelains may appeal to a few folks but as for me, no can do, I can’t go for that.

Did you try this collection yet?

Love it?

Left it?

Do you do creams?

Do share!

I think it looks better on you than you think. You definitely rock the warm shades the best though! I for one, can not pull dark warm shades at all so these are right up my alley!

    • the Muse

aw thanks eve you’re lovely to say ;-D I think I like warm better too! man, wish I can say the same, but these moddy pinks just don’t work out for me :-/

  • Kate

I don’t think it looks bad on you. But a few days ago, when you posted about the nude shades of BE Moxie gloss, you were correct that those were great/better nudes for you.

And if the formula sux, then fuggedaboudit!

Because I have not been a follower since the very inception of this blog (my loss, but at least I found you when I did) I must ask: have you ever written about the pretty, stretchy bands you always wear in your hair? I am curious because I think they might work for me.

If hair and/or personal items are not your thing to blog about, that’s cool. 🙂

    • the Muse

hi kate! you’re a doll! <3! thank you! the formula is ugh...have you tried sensational before? they are just rubbish yak!

I'm glad you finally found me ;-D! haven't really wrote a post about them or anything but people sometimes ask and I've addressed it in comments. Did you want to know where I buy them? typically asian beauty stores carry them! I have SUPER long, wavy hair so I like to keep it tucked into a bun and slicked back off my face when I am work so it isn't all crazy in my face ;-D

aw I don't mind personal ?'s and such! I like getting to know people who comment and talking to them daily, asking them questions or them asking me questions is a-ok by me, makes the experience of blogging all the more funnier in my opinion! I've made so many lasting friendships thanks to this site ;D!

      • Kate

Thank you for the info. on the stretchy headbands. I will try to scope out any Asian beauty supply stores in my area, but I live in Colorado at present, so it might be a challenge.

I have very different hair than you do; mine is fine and limp, even though I have a lot of hair. I, too, like to wear my long hair up much of thee time because my hair grows in a forward direction, and always flops forward, regardless of my activity. That probably sounds crazy, but I truly cannot have the experience of brushing my hair “back” and having it last for more than five seconds.

I also have baby fly-aways around my hairline, and they, too, always droop forward!

So even though our hair texture is so different, I think the width and stretchiness may really work for me.

        Thanks!

I’ve seen them on ebay as well but they aren’t quite the same…! just search “bulk headband or bulk hairband” ;-D I totally understand about long, mine is crazy long…no issues with limpness, I WISH! Mine just wanted to flow around my head like a shampoo commercial gone bad hahaha! I just like it out of my face as I work b/c it would drive me bonkers if it wasn’t tucked up into a bun! I think they could work for you ;-D or maybe a small rubber-band style hair band too since you said your hair is finer!

Kate, where do you live? There is an H Mart (good sized Korean grocery) on Parker Rd. in Aurora. You should be able to find them there.

  • Melissa

Is it horrible of me to say – not your best lippy look? I am tanner than you, happens when you live where the high is 104 is effin May (insert super sad face here) Anyways, I’m thinking the purple shades in this group might be worth a swatchy. Thank you for the review@!

    • the Muse

I agree melissa! LOL! it’s awful! totes appreciate the honesty! my pleasure chica, not so sure on the purple and tanned skin Mel…might look really garish! be careful! ;-D

  • Laurie Brown

I’d love to have that color, but sure don’t need anything that dries my lips even worse than they are. Thanks for the review!

  • sataa

You don’t like the formula but I think this shade really suits you

  • Sarah

That color looks really beautiful on you but that sucks you didn’t seem to enjoy the formulation. 🙁

    • the Muse

thanks sarah ;-D you’re too kind…mmm no likey! sensational lipstick just always stinks ;-/ or at least I think so!

  • yelena

call me crazy but i LOVE this color on you. u look very mature and classy. I dig it.
hey textures arent always great, i have a gorgeous lipstain that makes my lips feel gross but for looking good, i’llt take that chance. 😉

    • the Muse

cheers thanks yelena ;-D! haha I hear ya I hear ya ;-D same here! could prove the worst formula but sometimes it is so worth it!

  • Tiffany Martin

OH man I hate that color, and usually you look really great in lipsticks.

I’ve tried cream colors in that shade before and I had the same experience as you, and I’m fair (yellow undertoned), white-blonde, and grey-eyed I don’t know,I don’t think that color is flattering on anyone.

    • the Muse

me too tiffany, not sure it looks so great :-/ too mod! cream colors seem incredibly difficult to pull off, worst than mattes sometimes!

  • TLE

I like the color on you….a great neutral!! I know what your saying about dry lips though…the color could be great, but if the formula sucks, then it totally ruins it. I get zombie lips!!!

  • Jane

Alright I’ll cower in the corner before I say it, but I thnk it looks really pretty on you.

  • Amy Amethyst

Maybe not the best color but you always look lovely, Muse! BTW, love Hall and Oates!

  • Tiffany

I personally love this shade! It’s soo natural on me , its kind of insane. I also like the formula , but maybe its just me ? & i have kinda of dry lips and surprisingly this lipstick doesn’t gather at the sides of my lips or sink into my lip’s cracks. (this sounds worse than what i actually mean LOL)

  • Susan K

Agree 100% on the formula, I’ve never in my life tried on any lipstick that made my lips look as back as these do.

  • LiAnn – Sparklecrack Central

I’ve tried two colors from this collection – Afternoon Tea and Luminous Lilac – and while I do find the formula not-quite-as-smooth as I’d like, I do like how the colors look on me. (Maybe that’s because mauve lipcolors and I get on well!)

  • Angel

I actually really like this on you Muse! Very neutral and pretty. BTW, I have super long hair too. I never knew you had long hair. I think you need to post a pic with your hair down 🙂 I bet it’s really pretty!

    • the Muse

hey angel! thanks ;-D you’re lovely to say so! I posted a few pics of my hair down ;-D but I typically get ready in the AM and snap FOTD at that point so it’s usually up and ready for work at that moment ;D!

  • Avalith

ugh I bought 2 of these; one in nude and the other in pinkish nude and I doubt I’ll ever use them again.. I wanted a nude lip color and I didnt realize how these are so drying to my lips and emphasize on every little flakes that I have and settle into the lines 🙁 terrible terrible terrible!

  • Paige

I just bought this shade today and I checked your blog after my purchase. I didn’t think you’d done a review on this but I was wrong! I absolutely love this shade on you! It’s beautiful!

  • Tracy

I just found your blog a few days ago, and no one can pry my from my computer since LOL! I just saw this post and I for one, think this color looks GORGEOUS on you! But if you say its a no go, I certainly won’t purchase because…well..im one of those dry lip gals 🙁 I scrub my lippies and wear chapstick like crazy but they are just stubborn that way lol! Thank you so much for sharing your make up knowledge, this website has been a hugeeeee help!

    • the Muse

hi tracy so great to meet you flattered that you are enjoying Musings :-D!!!!!!!!!!! aw thanks1 you’re too kind! I fear I look like I have zombie lips hehe! creams are so damn difficult to pull off with drier lips imho. color sensational in general seems to run really dry! did you see the new maybelline color whispers? now those are super for drier lips ;-D! aw my pleasure <3! Happiest New Year!
