Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Set

The Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection ($28) is a 5 piece set of chubby, nude lip pencils that were created to complement the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year, Marsala.

I debated myself for a moment about the lack of Marsala-like shades in the Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection but finally just admitted that I actually liked it was a selection of nude colors, most of which, worked for me.

Let’s take a look!

Sephora Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection

Sure, the Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection will prove disappointing if you’re looking for Marsala shades of color in this set because, sadly, they is only one:( On the upside it is a nice selection of nude wearable shades that very in color intensity and finish. All of which happen to contrast very nicely with Marsala!

Sephora packages this up in a translucent ombre marsala shaded slide out box with the pencils all have metallic rose gold barrels. Visibly the packaging is simply stunning to say the least. The set includes five, 0.06 oz twist up chubby lip pencils.

Apparently these are formulated with hyaluronic filling spheres for plumping, as well as resveratrol, an antioxidant derived from red wine grapes. The finishes vary from shade to shade so you get some glossy colors, some mattes, and some creams. I found out of all the shades the most pleasant formula the shade Marsala which had a nice balminess and a high sheen shine much like the formula and texture of Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm. Some of the other shades weren’t as pleasant such as the mattes which weren’t really terribly drying but weren’t hydrating or balm-y either. I find the shades are sheerer but the build decently enough. I find the mattes and creams aren’t terribly flattering on my drier lips as they accentuate dryness but with gloss on top they look incredible. They wear for around three hours, sometimes four depending on the shades and they do not have a fragrance or flavor!

You can easily mix and match shades to create ombre looks or new colors. I like how natural and pretty the shades are! Some of the shades aren’t fab without gloss on top (like Rose Dawn) but become completely wearable and very natural with a little clear gloss on top!

I admit the Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection doesn’t have the greatest chubby lip pencil formula out there but I find myself not minding much. I just really like this set for some reason and with little tweaks I find the formula very flattering and wearable! I love all the shades in the set as well. Yes, there are better chubby pencils formulas out there but I still really enjoyed the Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection and I’m happy I purchased.

Would I recommend it?

Probably not as the formula might prove disappointing for many. I do suggest swatching and playing a little in store though as you might just like these as much as I do.

The Sephora + Pantone Marsala Layering Lip Collection is available now at Sephora and Sephora.com.

I’m returning mine. I love the cheek trio (I’m seriously thinking about stocking up- I liked it that much!) and the lipstick, but the mascara and this set were a letdown. I like the formula, but the shades did work for me.

I have yet to try the cheek palette but def testing it this week 😀 loved the lipstick too! Yeah, I hated the mascara too! This has quirks for me as well, the formula on some of the shades just wasn’t loving my dry lips but the shades I liked 😀 they really work well for me if I apply a little gloss (especially on the lighter ones)!

    • Isabella Muse

AGREED! they really do have a high end look! Sephora did an incredible job with the packaging!

  • Adrienne

Thanks for the swatches Muse. I was waiting on this and I am glad I saw your review. I would end up with “walking Dead” lips for a few of these so its not worth buying the entire set. Its too bad they don’t sell them separately. I may try the actual lipstick and wait for your eye shadow review.

    • Isabella Muse

oh I understand totally def had a moment of walking dead lips with at least one shade but a little gloss totally clears it up 😀 DO try the lipstick! Totally gorgeous shade Adrienne 😀 shadow palette review on the way next week <3 🙂

Disappointed in pretty much every Sephora Marsala release. It’s such a rich colour! They didn’t do it justice with any of the products. There are already existing products low to high end that are better.

    • Janelle

I totally agree! It’s odd though because when I look at the Pantone swatch it seems such a muted berry brown to me. I am making Chicken Marsala right now and the way the sun is catching the bottle is stunning. I wonder if neither Sephora or Pantone has seen a bottle of dry Marsala cooking wine in the afternoon sun? In my eyes, this entire collection has missed the mark for me and my coloring: the lipstick is brown and plain, the shadows come off red, the blush comes off orange (and why is called shimmering if it is matte?! Hello Sephora!!!) and this set is just so plain I may as well get the .99 wet and wild equivalents that I am sure I already have somewhere!!! Marsala had so much potential and instead it seems like any brown berry is “Marsala” and part of the Kylie Jenner lip trend. Waaaa!

I ended up ordering and returning this because of the mediocre textures and weird sizes – I prefer a glossier finish and don’t want to futz with multiple products. LOVVVED the eye palette tho, a few shades were stinkers but the marsala shades were amazing and there were some surprisingly nice mattes scattered about.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m testing the palette now 🙂 yup! they do vary from shade to shade but I have to say I don’t mind, a little clear gloss goes a long way with these. I kinda dug them for some reason 😀

  • fancie

I’m really digging these shades! I honestly wasn’t expecting these to be so pigmented and planned on skipping. I think I want it now along with that gorgeous cheek trio and lipstick

  • Katherine T.

Muse, thanks SO much for reviewing these! I was waiting and waiting for reviews and swatches before considering. If I didn’t already have so many lippies and dupes, I would pick this one up. The gold case is so stunning, especially for Sephora, and the price is right.

    • Isabella Muse

oh my pleasure dear 🙂 <3! Maybe wait for it to hit the sale rack and grab it!? 😀

  • karman

at first glance, the swatches remind me of the sonia kashuk nude lip palette that just got released for the holidays! the rose gold packaging is stunning. thanks for the swatches and review!

  • Rachel R.

I think this is a very pretty collection of natural looking shades. I wouldn’t call any of them “Marsala,” though.

  • Susan

Didn’t know about the mascara. I might have to try it. Wonder if they have it in the local JCP Sephora by me. And Muse, I was wondering if sometime in the future, you could show some makeup products on people with different skin tones? You gotta have some pasty-faced friends like me. Just asking.

  • Joann

Oh I will definitely check these out in store! Aside from Rose Dawn, I like and would wear the rest. I haven’t tried any of the sephora lip products but after your review, I’m really tempted to try them out.
