5 Reasons I Love Makeup

reasons to love makeup

There are dozens and dozens and dozens of reason I love makeup but if I wrote them all out we’d end up with a bible.

So I tried to narrow it down a little and here are 5 reasons I love makeup.

Feel free to share your top 5 reasons!

Because ya know my blog….
I started Musings of a Muse on my Space of all places. Because my x-boyfriend’s dad had written this rather poetic ode to makeup….he inspired me somehow. But one of the reasons I love makeup is my blog. I really like that I have an outlet that I can share my love of makeup with everyone. Several years ago that was like two people now it’s thousands of people. Blogging to me feels like having a bunch of friends that I can sit with every single day and squeal over some new eyeshadow. It’s one of the top reasons I love makeup, the sharing aspect just thrills me!

Because I can take ordinary and make it extraordinary!
I love makeup because I can take my ordinary lashes and make them super long! I can make my boring brown eyes look big and doe-like with a little tightlining and waterlining! I can smooth a little BB Cream on my face and instantly my skin looks healthy and refreshed.

Because no one in the makeup world says no to any shade no matter how loud, bold, or outrageous!
If you wanna snap pictures of yourself in aqua eyeshadow and place it on a Reddit Makeup Addiction you’re likely going to get tons of encouragement. You rarely have people who love makeup nay saying certain shades! I love that people don’t think aqua eyeshadow is weird or wearing some outrageously long falsies is too much. Makeup lovers are usually all about encouraging each other to try the bold and not to be scared of it.

Because it makes me feel pretty!
We all have something we dislike about ourselves! I love that makeup can make me feel prettier and more confident!

Because it’s nice to look at!
I love pretty packaging, pretty colors, gorgeous shades of lipstick all in a row….! Makeup is just pretty to look at. I love switching up my vanity to display my favorite perfumes, powders, and newest blushes. Makeup is just damn nice to look at!

How about you?

What are your top 5 reasons you love makeup?

Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I have a picture of myself as a baby, in diapers, applying eye shadow. So I would say my makeup addiction is genetic. Through my very DNA I am attracted to trying on different colours, playing with textures, changing the way I look in the mirror from day to day. The more I play with makeup the more I love it, and the more I learn to live by my own rules. No more eyeliner – I hate it. I don’t need mascara, I have long black lashes. But 10 pink lipsticks – oh yes, I need every one. Five foundations? Well of course! (actually five is a little on the low side for me). On the one hand I hate my addiction ($$$). On the other hand it’s what makes my mornings interesting. Oh and don’t get me started on my fragrance collection….talk about expensive, but it’s like aromatherapy, so I need all my perfumes!!! I just wish aromatherapy of this sort was covered by the Canadian health plan 🙂

THAT IS TOO cute! share that pic hehe 😀 I’m with you on fragrances, very addicted there 😀

I think I got into makeup when I was searching got a makeup artist for a special event. while searching for the perfect makeup artist, I myself got hooked into the world of makeup!

    1) its fun to apply, swatch, and purchase!
    2) THE INFINATE SHADES OF COLORS – GORGEOUS!
    3) makeup helps make me look “awake” in the morning (mascara!)
    4) love makeup tutorials and blogs, and knowing there are many many addicts out there!
    5) its fun!

Ok so I don’t have 5 to list, but I wanted to comment that I so agree with you about how kind the makeup community is! I’ve really noticed it on Instagram. I follow a lot of makeup accounts, coupon accounts and fashion accounts and by far the makeup lovers are the nicest. They always leave nice comments for each other and there is no drama!

  • Jay

    1. I agree its so pretty to look at!

    2. It’s a form of expression

    3. Watching a professional MUA work with different colors, and textures, and skin tones is mesmerizing. I admire what they are able to create and how they transform. The overnight Instagram makeup artists are taking over the spotlight, but there is nothing like an educated, practiced MUA honing their skills. They are so nice too! Always sweet and uplifting, no matter what you look like (in my experience).

    4. Its everywhere! I like a habit I can support from $1 to $100 lol

    5. It makes me feel beautiful and confident. The right shade of lipstick can take my ordinary face to extraordinary.

      • Trinh

Yes, I like that it’s at every budget too. I just start getting into drugstore and Korean makeup since they’re cheaper (SAHM)

Because makeup makes me look alive….I once took a picture of my self with no makeup, and linked it to related search and pictures of corpses came out.😞 tried it again with a picture wearing makeup and pictures of women came out on the related search.

    1. I love looking at different colors. As a child, I was obsessed with crayons, paints, markers… I made it my mission to have every color, and if I couldn’t find it, I mixed it-kind of what I do with make u p now, LOL!

    2. Although I always loved creating “art”, I never got the hang of making a 2-dimensional surface into a 3-dimensional masterpiece, but I discovered I can do it on a 3-dimensional canvas! I always had a good eye for color, and I did quite well in my color theory class in 7th grade.

    3. I don’t feel completely dressed without it, particularly if I’ve gone out of my way to put together an amazing outfit, complete with other accessories. It just makes everything look “off”. However, I try to keep everything proportional; if I’m in a t-shirt/leggings, I’m not doing full-on contouring & false lashes, LOL!

    4. I’m OG goth; makeup just goes with the territory…

    5. No matter how bad the economy gets, we’ll always be able to afford a new lipstick, which is how Revlon survived the Great Depression! We may not be able to buy a new dress or shoes, but even if it means scraping together loose change, we can always find a lippie within our means!

  • TropicalChrome

    1. Pretty colors. Looking at pretty colors makes me feel good. That’s why I started with nail polish – so I’d have pretty colors with me that I can look at all day long.

    2. I’m a control freak. Makeup allows me to change my look to fit what I want to look like that day.

    3. Choice. See above. It’s a daily affirmation that I get to choose how I present myself to the world. In a world that seems hellbent on making everyone the same, makeup is surprisingly the way I break out of that. (Side note: this is also why I support my friends who choose not to wear makeup 110%. That’s their choice and they get to make it, not me or anyone else.)(Another side note: which is also why some days I don’t wear it at all, yes, even when leaving the house.)

    4. Camouflage. To gloss over much, the past couple of years have been rough, and sometimes I just don’t want anyone asking how things are going because I’m tired of talking about it. I’ve found some makeup tricks to make me look more awake/alert/happier/brighter/perkier, even when I don’t feel like it. It’s like magic. Cheap magic :).

    5. It’s fun. And life is too short not to have fun.

  • Linda

Because makeup is ART that I get to create on my face to make my world a tiny bit prettier! Every morning I get to make choices that an artist would make: What color? How much? What brush? What colors go with that color? To me, makeup is a painting that i get to change and improve every single day!

  • Lulubelle

    1. The thrill of the hunt. I love looking at products online, reading reviews and blog postings, and then honing in on what I will purchase.
    2. Getting ready in the morning. I put music on and the time I’m putting on makeup is my “me time”. It sets the tone for the day.
    3. The smells, textures, and colors. From the shower gels/soaps/lotions to the eyeshadows/blushes/lipsticks to that finishing spritz of perfume. The sensory experience.
    4. The creativity of it all. How do these colors look together? What works for me?
    5. I’ve been fascinated with makeup/skincare items since I was a child. Agree with whoever said there was a genetic component. I can still remember the first time I wore eyeshadow and said “oh wow”. I remember the color of my first blush – a soft peach by Covergirl that was a Christmas present from my mother.

  • Dee

I’ve always loved makeup. My sister and I would spend hours at the drugstore just looking at the colors and then making very inexpensive purchases, running home and trying out what we got. I laugh now when I think of what we must have looked like. I just bought an old Revlon Moon Drops lipstick in a shade that I used to love way back then and thought it looked smashing on me. Well, it doesn’t, but the smell of it took me right back. It’s just “fun” for lack of a better word.

I feel better and more confident when I’m wearing some, even if it’s just a little bit, and I enjoy the process of putting it on.

I love blogs, yours in particular. I have found some great products and quite a few that have become my “regulars.”

  • Mary

I totally blame my mother who would not let me wear makeup as a teen. I have certainly made up for that deprivation over the last 50 years!!!

  • Majick

I am loving everyone’s answers! I used to steal my Mom’s avon lippie samples because they were small like me (I was no more than 5 years at the time. LOL) She was not really happy about that. haha

    1. ALL THE PRETTY COLORS, TEXTURES, and SPARKLE!

    2. Putting on makeup is actually carthartic for me. I find it relaxing and makes me feel good.

    3. BLogs – they weren’t around in my day and a lot of my friends are not makeup wearers. I love that I can find so many like minded people here to laugh with.

    4. the FANTASY… I love looking at ads and fashion shows. my dream job would be a stylist/makeup artist/designer.

    5. packaging – yep, I love all the pretty palettes and containers etc.

    Great topic!

  • kellly

    1. I love trying something new and maybe finding a new HG or at least a new love. Plus I’m a sucker for each season’s new colors. And anything sparkly and shiny.
    2. New colors and improved formulas always get my attention.
    3. Reading makeup reviews makes me either anxious to try something or saves me money if it’s not going to be something that will work for me.
    4. Reading blogs keeps me aware of what’s new coming out so I can be looking for it to show up in my area.
4-1/2. I love the blogs because everyone is so sweet, sharing and enthusiastic! It’s like having a whole bunch of friends who share my obsession and I can talk about it without getting the sideways eyes from someone who doesn’t share my enthusiasm.
    5. I think makeup gives me a finished, polished look. I’ve been going for a more natural work-friendly look lately, but wearing makeup daily makes me look like I care about how I look and not like I just put on clothes and showed up. It’s part of my total image and I think it makes me look polished.

  • Rachel R.

    1. I love color.

    2. I love the potential. Makeup has the power to enhance and transform anyone. It can make anyone more beautiful and confident.

    3. It’s a creative outlet for me.

    4. I’m really obese, unfortunately, despite my best efforts. People are always surprised I look polished and pretty. They say I am pretty…and they’re shocked they’re saying it. So many people think that heavy people must be ugly, lazy, unhealthy, dirty, etc. I love making people rethink what they find attractive.

    5. I find the whole ritual of skincare, choosing makeup, and putting it on relaxing. It’s the one thing I do just for me.

Society does make generalizations about people who are overweight, but they are very wrong in their assumptions. But that is THEIR problem, not yours. Embrace the size you are and if makeup makes you feel better then keep on doing it. No-one is perfect in every way.

  • Cindy

With make-up I can look like the girl I want to be instead of who I am. Flawless skin, Luscious lips, popping eyes, identical eyebrows, cheekbones to the sky instead of a plain Chinese girl.

    • Isabella Muse

with or without makeup I doubt you’re just a “plain Chinese girl” Cindy.

  • Jennifer

I love makeup and have for a long time. As a wife and mother it’s just about my only daily self-indulgence. It’s pretty and fun and causes no harm to anyone else. Every day you start with a clean slate and can use as much or as little as you want. Depression seems to lurk in many of the women in my family. It happened to my mom several years ago. One of the first signals we noticed was that she stopped caring about herself and she lost interest in makeup and everything else. My two sisters and I vowed to keep our eyes on each other and to step in if we ever notice one of us doing the same thing.

  • Pamela

I think because I’ve been an artist off and on again. Before kids. Between kids, then after they grew up and now I’m opening a studio here in town that makeup is like painting and appreciating colores in all shades.

I love trying the differfent shades of all makeup things. I have decided to admit I am a makeup hoarder. Yikes!

Although I do miss my younger surfer days where I could just get up, gunk up my eyelashes with false ones and GO to the beach. Those days are long past, haha.

  • Genevieve

I started getting into makeup when I was 12 and had to wear it for a school concert – I haven’t stopped wearing it since.
It makes me feel better, look better and I love the effect it has on my overall appearance.
I love the blogs like this one because we can all share our love of beauty products unreservedly.
Thank you Isabella for starting your blog.
