Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar 2

Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar is a new follow up product to last year’s Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Cleanser (which I really liked). I’m a big fan of charcoal type products! I love Lush Dark Angels, adore Coal Face, and I think that MAC Volcanic Ask Mask is the bees knees.

Last year, I actually really enjoyed Biore’s Charcoal Cleanser too but many people weren’t so keen….! If you experienced problems with it I likely wouldn’t recommend a purchase of the Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar as it has some of the same ingredients including peppermint which isn’t exactly kindly to your face (and really an unnecessary ingredient anyway!).

The Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar in theory sounds amazing. It’s created with charcoal powder which is fabulous for giving your skin a nice deep cleanse. This is promoted and marketed as a cleanser that will de-gunk pores.

Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar

It’s a big chunky bar as you can see which you wet, work into a lather, and simply smooth the later onto your face to cleanse. I’ve used it a month and my dry skin seems a ok with it! It smells like spearmint gum and for me, I find the smell quite nice. However, even I can admit peppermint isn’t exactly good for your skin. I personally think they include the ingredient in the mix because it gives that “tingly OMG I’m so super clean” feeling but technically we all know the tingle doesn’t mean your skin is any cleaner! I wouldn’t say it was terribly exfoliating for me nor would I say it was something I’d use to remove my makeup however, in the shower, for quick AM cleaning I like it well enough. The lather up has tiny jojoba beads which I was worried would irritate me but they actually feel like grittier pieces which is nice for really basic exfoliation. My skin doesn’t feel tight or extra dry after use and I didn’t experience any break outs.

However, I see it being a nightmare for sensitive skin. The peppermint will likely make your face red, possibly break you out, or cause a rash. My skin is fairly resilient so I didn’t experience the issue but it’s something that’s worth mentioning if you’re sensitive.

The idea behind this is great but the actual ingredients aren’t fabulous for your skin unfortunately!

Biore Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar is available now at drugstores or Ulta.com.

Awful product! Sodium palmate is way too alkaline for the face. The good ingredients are not outweighed by the poor ones. Yuck, please no one use this, especially if you have acne. The market is overflowing with gentle cleansers.

Oh, I’m glad I read your comment. I was thinking about buying this, but I think I’ll skip it now. Can you recommend any drugstore bar soaps that are ok for oily/acne prone skin?

I recently purchased the charcoal bar and I love it. I have problems with acne and extremely dry skin. Being a woman of color I was a little skeptical about using it. I have experienced no rashes nor redness. I still experience dryness but the acne is clearing up. I like this product better than proactive.

I appreciate all of your comments I got a freebie bar at cvs pharmacy and thinking to just toss it.

return it dear if you’re uncomfortable using it, get your money back!

I just purchased this product. I absolutely love the bar. I have used the cleanser before. I am almost 60 and have hormone breakouts. I use the product a couple of times a week or if I am experiencing a breakout. My skin feels and looks amazing.

I love this product! I am VERY fair skinned and have struggled with acne since my early teens (I am 26 now). I use this as the only soap used for my face and use a nourishing moisturizer after (by Simple). The first few days of using it I broke out, but after those 3 days it started to clear up and has remained clear (aside from a couple small pimples around the time I get my period, but that is hormone related).

I bought this the other day in a two pack. I used it a few times and the first time was alright. No problems at all. Tonight I used it and my face is burning, it’s bright red, and I’m not sure if I’ll continue using the product. Unfortunately this happens with every product I’ve ever tried.. and I have a horrible blackhead problem that I can’t seem to get under control.

Try using a good mycellar water like from lancome
Or buying coconut activated charcoal powder from amazon and mixing it with applecidervinegar/water and optional bentonite clay and use the paste as a face mask. Its like taking out all the chemical ingredients from this.
Or mix the charcoal powder with nontoxic elmers glue and itll become like a biore strip for your face. You can tone the strength of the glue down with a bit of aloe vera or something. Takes about 30 min to dry. Then just peel it off and you can see all the stuff that came out just like a biore strip.
All natural stuff/homemade! I bet itll be safe enough for your skin.

I just bought this today I thought of trying it sense I had a coupon. I really like it . My face feels so clean and it’s not grease. I even got the strips for the nose. It’s great so far.

So i’m curious on where you found that peppermint is bad for your face/skin… if you look it up, or at least so far everywhere i am reading, peppermint is EXCELLENT for your skin – it actually helps fight acne. where did you end up reading it was bad?
I use the pump product from Biore, but noticed that they have more chemicals in that one then this, and was one of the reasons why i wanted to switch to the bar and was looking into it.
    Please do your research.

It can be potentially an issue for those that have sensitive skin or even rosacea, Bryn. Have a look at rosacea.org where it says that peppermint or other essential oils can be problematic, also the tingle feeling this produces could upset sensitive skin. Granted, there are great uses for peppermint oil including treating acne but some people choose to avoid essential oils on there skin because it causes breakouts or irritations and I think that’s a worthy thing to mention when I reviewed this product. Some people are also allergic to essential oils/peppermint and this can cause a reaction or break out versus treating one. Not everyone has the same skin types and everyone will have a different reaction to a skincare product that may contains peppermint or some other ingredient so saying it is “excellent for your skin” is an inaccurate statement as it may work for you but it might not work for someone else. There are many complaints of break outs and issues with the Biore Charcoal wash which also contains peppermint, you might want to review those comments to see how many people had an averse reaction with the product. I’m glad to hear this product worked so well for you and you’re enjoying it.

Key word “potentially”. There’s issues and complaints with any and everything we do or use.

I want to agree with Muse. There are so many raves reviews about the charcoal bar and I purchased and have been breaking out, alot more than usual, from it. I thought it would stop after a few days and I gave it a few more weeks because everyone kept saying it helps with breakouts. But this wasn’t even my typical breakout. I felt like a teenager and embarrassed about my skin with acne all over my forehead and cheeks. Then I thought it was other facial products I had switched around but finally narrowed it down to the charcoal bar and my face stopped breaking out other than my typical breakouts due to PMS or stress which I have control over b/c its only one or two versus my whole forehead. My face tends to sensitive to most products and breaks out easily when new things are introduced. I was simply trying to be proactive about my skin since this soap is supposed to gently exfoliate and deep clean. I went back to my prior regime and my face has completely calm down.

I have used it twice and I broke out in an awful rash around my eyes! I really liked the way it cleaned however the aftermath was not so pleasant!! My eyes are all swollen, burning and bumpy!

    • Brandi

I have had the same problems! The first time was ok, and then after that my face started staying very red as if I was sunburned. I thought maybe I was, but after 3 weeks with it only getting worse, I knew it was the soap. I was very red around my nose, chin and cheeks, and to top it off, I have these blister type bumps all over my cheeks…..my face constantly had this burning feel. I stopped using the soap and started gentle baby wash and little by little it is helping. I thought my face was bad before and this just made it so much worse.

      • Paris

I have been getting wrinkles in almost everywhere in the middle to my face the t zone around the mouth and chin. Is there anything I can do that can get my skin back to normal?

  • Kelly

I started using this bar today, and I love it. I have the worst blackheads on my nose. My chin, cheeks, and my forehead. I actually took the bar and exfoliated it around my entire face. It felt amazing. After 2mins I rinsed my face, and my entire face was cleared up, feels amazing. I would recommend this product to anyone that suffers from severe blackheads

  • lauren

did anyone using this experience a worsening of acne for the first period of use before it got better? i read everywhere that because it draws out impurities then it sort of “purges” your face.

  • Alexandra

Horrible product. I broke out for a whole week. The tingly feeling feels as though it’s working, but I do not recommend this for fair/sensitive skin, and especially not if you have acne.

  • Gayla

This soap is horrible, I used it for about two weeks it has burnt my skin and has wrinkles around my eyes and puffy. I would not recommend this product to know one.
