Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer

Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer ($8.99) is a new concealer and corrector that’s popping up with a new Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation formula that’s hitting drugstores now for the Summer/Fall 2015 season.

This new formula contains something called Actyl-C, an ingredient known for its antioxidant benefits. Apparently the ingredient energizes skin so it looks renewed and healthier with continued use. This is one of the selling points of the concealer and one of the things that I imagine Maybelline will hope sets it apart from others at the drugstore. Personally, I haven’t used the concealer long enough to tell you how it is or isn’t effecting my under eye area but I can share what I thought of the application, coverage, and performance of the concealer.

Let’s take a look!

You all know I’m a concealer junkie and I’m still trying to find that one drugstore concealer that might be as great as Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer. I dislike drugstore concealers for the most part and truly believe it is a splurge kinda item but Maybelline Dream Mousse, well, when I think about it I cry inside about the fact it is gone. One day, one day I have a dream that Maybelline will relaunch it or something just as fabulous will come along to replace it.

Unfortunately, Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer isn’t the product that will.

This is a pretty basic concealer and probably most suitable for those with oily skin but no worries drier ones can use it as well. It comes with a sponge tip applicator for application and is formulated to “target dark circles, spots, and imperfections”. Take that with a grain of salt as although it sounds like it’s a treatment of sorts it doesn’t contain ingredients that would lighten up dark circles, spots, etc…

This has a creamy thin consistency that spreads easily under eyes but has a drier slightly satiny set. I wouldn’t call it hydrating by any means and I feel like those with oily lids will like the texture best as well as the satin set. It does crease every so slightly within a three hour period but it isn’t too bad. I wore on me for about five hours but it did fade away by that fifth hour.

For me, personally, I look for a few things in a concealer. I like something creamy, something pigmented, something hydrating, and something that brightens. This had an ok texture but nothing I’d write home about. Sadly, it did lack hydration but it did have a nice lighter creaminess. The pigment wasn’t quite great here and I could have used a lot more coverage. I got it in medium and felt the shade was rather dulling under my eyes and didn’t really brighten up the area or make me look fresher or more away. On that note, I didn’t feel the shade had any correcting abilities so why even bother calling it a concealer/corrector?

All in all I didn’t feel like Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer was all that great. It’s a mediocre concealer that might be a good pick if you desire lighter, sheerer coverage and have oily skin around your eyes and lids. For those of that need full coverage and a more hydrating formula I fear it’ll disappoint.

Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer is available now at drugstores or grab it online at Ulta.com.

What’s your favorite mid/high end concealer? I’m looking for a new one for spot correcting!

  • Lauren

Have you tried the Hard Candy Glamoflauge concealer? Literally cannot use another concealer after having tried that one. Plus it’s the only concealer I’ve ever found where the lightest shade is lighter than my skin, so I can actually highlight with it!

    • Isabella Muse

yup! reviewed and raved it when it first came out good stuff 🙂

Waiting with bated breath on your review of the better skin foundation!

Hi–thanks for the updates–hope your week is going well!
I have spent more money on dept store brands–but since reading your blogs–well decided to try something new & save some money—so from Ulta, I got Maybelline Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles treatment/concealer. I really like it so far. I used a brush–I got the neutralizer and the med shade. I do have age spots and dark circles (not sure if you have reviewed this). Am 2 X 25 in the age range–so may be older than some of your readers! Best! Elaine

it’s going great thanks Elaine hope yours is too!!!!!!! 😀 Awesome! I’m glad you’re liking it. When I originally reviewed/tried the Eraser I didn’t like it but I actually think they changed the formula slightly and it’s considerably better than the original launch 😀 so I’m glad it is working for you!!!!!!!!!! 😀 Enjoy! xoxox!

I’m with you in the hunt for the perfect drugstore concealer. I loved the WnW Fergie Collection concealer when it came out, but I noticed that over time it was making my undereyes much drier than normal. I tried using an undereye primer before the concealer but it ended up making the concealer settle (which had never happened before) and shortened the wear time.

Have you tried the CK One Color mousse concealer? I’ve heard good things, plus it’s a mousse! Maybe it can help fill the hole in your heart that Maybelline so viciously ripped asunder.

    • Isabella Muse

really? Interesting! I use it but thankfully didn’t notice the dryness phew because my eyes are already damn dry! I have, reviewed it a while ago, it’s nice but not quite my beloved Maybelline 😀

    • Isabella Muse

mmmm so so? If you’re hiding a really tiny pimple maybe!?

  • Genevieve

I really dislike it when you find a great product, run out of it and then it is not there anymore. So annoying – especially when brands bring out another product to replace it and it isn’t as good as the original one you used and loved. Fortunately I don’t need these products but I feel your pain!

I bought this concealer. I am also a concealer lover but looking for something less expensive than Loreal, which never has a seal on it and I love the Maybelline Better Skin concealer because it is sealed. It also has more in the tube for less money.

I wasn’t too impressed with this concealer, either. Since we seem to have the same criteria, I wanna check out the Dream Mousse that you like! Thanks for this review 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

oh dream mousse is sadly long gone but man if you can find it on ebay or something it is so worth it ;-D

Ik im kinda late but I LOVE this concealer. as a teen, too much coverage looks really fake on me and this one is perfect.
