Maybelline Lip Gloss Palette Review & Swatches
The Maybelline Lipgloss Palette ($11.99) is a new permanent lip gloss palette that contains eight shades of Maybelline Lipgloss as well as a lip brush for application. The Maybelline Lip Gloss Palette is an interesting release because as far back as I can remember they have never done such a large lip palette.
Typically brands release lip palettes around the Holidays or at least that’s what I’ve noticed although Too Faced released the Natural Kiss Lip Palette for Spring 2012 so that blows my Holiday release theory out the window.
I just don’t see brands releasing lip palettes all that much and personally I think its because they just aren’t appealing to the masses. I personally find them messy to work with and I prefer lipgloss or lipstick in a tube not a palette. But there are some appealing aspects for a lipgloss or lipstick palette one of which is the fact you can play mixologist and create any number of different looks by mixing and matching shades. I love customized beauty and there’s no denying a palette like this offers endless options for creating different shades and looks.
The Maybelline Lip Gloss Palette is about the size of their Blushed Nudes Palette and holds eight shades of lipgloss as well as a lip brush for application. At a glance it quite reminds me of the NYX Lip Palettes from way back when although those were smaller and a good deal more pigmented.
I was quite happy with the lip brush that included which has an almost oval head. I hate those dense, point lip brushes that seem to come with every palette. This has soft bristles with a rounded head that fits the contour of my lips beautifully! So far, so good Maybelline.

The actually gloss palette runs from sheerer to pigmented. I’d say you have about four fairly pigmented shades (nothing dramatic but there’s color here) and four sheerer shades. At the start of the palette the shades all look the same on my lips with a very sheer hint of color but the last four shades in the palette pack better color pay off. Although I will say that a majority of these shades offer good tint but nothing too pigmented or outrageous. I think they lack shine sadly which disappointed me but they do layer together nicely, wear well over lipsticks, and feel fairly comfortable on my lips. They are not hydrating but they have a soft balmy consistency that’s pleasant enough on lips without being too heavy, sticky, or tacky. The texture is quite like the MAC Holiday Lip Palettes as it nice a soft but not nearly as pigmented as the MAC ones. They apply easily enough with a soft glide but the balmy consistency isn’t really my thing! I wish they had more of an emollient feel and a bit more glossiness. The colors wear for around three hours on their own without migrating or feathering. They have no taste nor do they have a fragrance. Personally they wear best over lipsticks as they add a certain richness to lip colors and you can get a nice customized looks by mixing any of the shades with your lipstick. For example, the second to last shade is a gorgeous warm red that pairs up nicely with a deeper red lipstick. There are endless ways you can mix and match shades and that’s one of the things I liked about the palette. I kinda feel like the shades all look the same though once applied individually as you can see from my looks below.
I don’t know if you need to necessarily run out and grab the Maybelline Lipgloss Palette right away but if you happen upon it on sale it might be worth picking up especially if you like cocktailing shades or if you’re a lipgloss lover. I’m impartial to it myself. It’s not really the best quality lipgloss palette I ever tried nor is it the worst. It is innovative for the brand that’s for sure and different. It’s also testimony how much Maybelline and other drugstores have evolved and stepped up their games. It’s kinda nice to walk into a drugstore and be presented with a larger lip palette like this!
But my recommendation is to try it when you see it on sale. It’s not quite worth the $12 price tag in my humblest so do wait for a sale.
