Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick by Color Sensational ($7.99) is range of permanent matte liquid lipsticks available in ten shades that’s launching with the Maybelline Spring 2016 Collection.

Someone got the memo that I hate matte lipsticks and that’s basically how Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks and Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor came about.

Both Maybelline and Revlon have successfully create two matte liquid lipsticks that are comfortable to wear, look amazing, and have incredible wear and color without feeling dry or tight. Bless be! My makeup prayers have been answered.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick

Early this November we were treated to Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor which had an early head start for Spring 2016. Now Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid has launched in 10 gorgeous shades as well and I for one can’t get enough of these newfangled matte liquid lipsticks!

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid comes in a square tube that pays home to 0.26 oz of lipstick with a flat sponge applicator that saturates well with color. If you’re comparing Revlon’s version to Maybelline’s I’d say Revlon’s packaging is a little more interesting but also a lot more bulkier plus smaller at 0.2 oz at around the same $7.99 price tag. These also lack the strong taste and flavor that Revlon’s version has. I didn’t really detect a flavor but they do have a sort of unusual fragrance out of the tube.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Swatches (Nude Thrill, Nude Flush, Orange Shot, Rebel Red, and Berry Boost)

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Swatches (Nude Thrill, Nude Flush, Orange Shot, Rebel Red, and Berry Boost)

I think both are very similar in formula but Maybelline’s version is a little less of a gel-like consistency and more velvety with less shine versus Revlon’s version which has a gel-like consistency and a creamy thickness with shine. Both formulas hug lips and move with lips in a way that the color never feels dry, tight, or uncomfortable.

Maybelline’s formula is thick, creamy, and applies with a soft, velvety glide on lips. I never felt like color fell into my natural lip lines and the color always looked fresh, smooth, and even from start to finish. The formula wraps lips up in a cushy little hug but isn’t as balmy as Revlon’s version yet still managed to feel lightly hydrating without that tighter, drier matte feel. I’d say the formula was very much a hybrid that had the color of a lipstick but the formula of a creamier, velvety gloss. I didn’t get the shine factor here that I did with Revlon’s version so these had more of a truer matte finish but still had a very lightweight, comfortable feel on lips. I get about four to five hours of wear and the color remains very fresh and even without cracking or migrating. Pigmentation is perfect and applies opaque on a single layer but never sets dry so you can build or reapply easily.

I’m liking the reinvention of matte liquid lipsticks I’m seeing at the drugstores lately. They make mattes way more wearable in my opinion and particularly great for those of us with drier lips that feel like mattes suck the moisture from our lips. Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid delievers intense color with a traditional matte finish but not a traditional matte formula. This formula is easier to apply, easier to wear, and looks incredible without ever feeling heavy or dry!

I like!

Well done Maybelline.

I love the idea of a comfortable matte lip product, but the color range leaves a lot to be desired. I might have been intrigued if there had been a plum.

    • Isabella Muse

there’s a purple shade not sure if that interests you, I only have five shades but there are another five to choose from 🙂

  • Maria

These colors look pretty on you Muse. I have to add these to my makeup list. They look pretty. I hope they are long lasting.

    • Isabella Muse

thanks Maria! I actually spoke about the wear time in the review 🙂 hope it helps!?

I’m confused as to why so many companies now are putting out lip products labeled “matte” when they are NOT matte. Don’t get me wrong, I think many of them, including these from Maybelline, are gorgeous, but they’re more of a satin finish. I don’t like mirror-ball-glassy reflective lip products, as they look juvenile and weird on me, but can’t wear completely flat matte ones either. Are companies saying “matte” just to jump on the bandwagon? Sorry to go kinda off-topic.

    • Anne

I agree. I picked up one of these and am really disappointed that they are not at all matte. I think “matte” is just the latest term that marketers think will get us to buy more lipstick. In this case it backfired as I will be returning this product.

    • Aby

I totally agreed. I purchased the nude thrill expecting a perfect matte-finish and It didn’t dry all the way so it looked semi-gloss and also felt glossy! I’m not saying they’re bad, I’m actually keeping it because the shade its amazing but I didn’t like that they label something as matte when it clearly isn’t. I give them 2.5/5.

      • Hunter

I just got home from buying the nude blush 10 of these lip glosses however I expected it to be matte as it says on the tube. it never dried matte and I’m severely disappointed

  • Heidi

I’m intrigued. I spotted these at CVS and there are some interesting colors. But do these smell anything like the regular Maybelline Color Sensational lipsticks? I hate the smell of those — there’s some powdery/soapy note in those that drives me up the wall.

    • Isabella Muse

No, not the play-doh smell of the sensationals, but kinda, I dunno, something..like cardboard maybe?! It’s a weird scent!

  • kellly

I like the finish on these. It’s not matte!!! I can see plenty of shine, which (at least to me) is sort of the opposite of what I expect from matte. Personally, I’m definitely over it on matte lips anyway. They look too pasted-on instead of looking nice. I might give these a try.

  • Kelli

For a cool toned, rosy faced person, which nude do you think would match better? I personally like the thrill, but is it as warm as it is in the photos? I don’t want to spend the money if I’m just going to return it. *looks at Revlon and their terrible foundation shades*

    • Isabella Muse

mmmmmmmmmmmmm you might get away with Nude Flush Kelli as Nude Flush is a bit warmer.

    • Dee

I just got the Nude Flush color. Sorry to say, but I don’t like it on me. It just washes me out. I have a lighter skin-tone (soft cool), with blue-gray eyes. Hope that helps. Personally, I have a hard time finding a good nude color. I do better with soft berry colors.

    • Cynthia

Try the Revlon Vivid Matte in nude thrill. Looks very natural and I have similar coloring as you.

I love how you are always on top of things especially when I am on the fence, things in Ohio tend to gradually show up but never the full display at any one location. I found a Maybelline display (Bed, Bath & Beyond) but it contained none of the lip products I wanted to try but it has a super fine micro fine eyeliner pencil and a newer mascara as part of the lash sensational line. Then at CVS I saw the lip display but it only contained 2 of the lighter colors that I know would not work on my skin tone. CVS didn’t have any of the other product displays (foundation, powders, setting sprays etc). I have not seen ANY new products at Walgreens at all. Thanks as always for your honest reviews I will have to hunt down the other products and since you have already reviewed them I will know what t purchase when they finally put them on sale. You always have the best swatches!

    • Isabella Muse

Aw thanks Adrienne your comment made my day 🙂 Sorry you’re having a hard time finding ’em! Hopefully they pop up soon! xoxoxoxoxo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, this comment really made me smile!

  • Des

Awesome post!! I am late to jump on the matte bandwagon. I saw the display in Canada here at my local drugstore and ran over to it. First pick of any colours I wanted!! I practiced some self restraint and picked up two. Nude Allude and Statement Nude!! I am in LOVE!! A matte that isn’t super drying? I’m there! The fact that these are so pigmented and comfortable to wear is amazing. Drug store gem for sure. I will definitely be picking up more colours!!

  • Des (Sleep Deprived)

Gosh I just realized I was referring to the new Loreal Infallible pro matte gloss and not the Maybelline! How embarrassing! Lol!!

  • Katherine Rasmussen

Just bought this Sun. @ walmart (1/10) and really like it! Nude Thrill is a brownish nude not a reddish nude, i was pleased. Texture is light, nonsticky, packaging is “upscale” looking for drugstore, lol! Similar to a Nyx product I bought a few yrs. ago.

  • lala

not sure if its just me but I bought the purple shade u dont have on here and I cant stand it. the smell throws me off, it bleeds on me even with liner and the color is not that greatly pigmented plus its watery! maybe I got a bad batch?? idk but I wanna return it…possibly exchange? by the way the nude thrill is an amazing color.

    • Isabella Muse

Sorry to hear it Lala! 🙁 Maybe exchange it for another shade! Could be inconsistent formula issue with that color!

  • Christine

I love your swatches and you are gorgeous! <3 Would you mind telling me what number Nude Thrill is (is it MAT12)? Thank you so much and I love love your swatches! ^_^

    • Isabella Muse

oh thank you Christine! I’m not sure…! I don’t have it with me at the moment, it’s home! I’ll check and post back! Thank you <3!

  • Monique P.

Omg omg omg I can’t go anywhere without people asking me what brand of lipstick I am wearing ..I tell them it’s Maybelline Vivid matte…I am in love with this lipstick even tho it’s not a stick …I’m.currently collecting all shades!

  • Pixie

I bought this in purple and gray. Coverage was abysmal and definitely not matte. Only product in recent history I can think of I actually returned because it was so bad. Now randomly stumbling upon this I suspect it’s the newer colors that have the coverage issue.

    • Isabella Muse

wow sorry to hear it! I haven’t tried the new shades to be honest but def not matte on the older ones! However, pigment was great!

  • Heather Bueltemann

That is hilarious! I’m a Cosmetics Formulator, your adorable!
