E.L.F. Lip Kiss Balm

E.L.F. Lip Kiss Balm ($2) is a new tinted lip balm that launched in eight shades for the Fall 2015 season. For me, E.L.F. Lip Kiss Balm is likely a nod to Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments or even Maybelline Baby Lips at a way cheaper price tag.

E.L.F. markets these as a tinted lip balm that gives “soft lips and sheer coverage with a lovely luscious effect”. They are supposed to have a minty flavor and contain Grape Seed Oil Jojoba Oil, and Vitamin A, and E. For something loaded up with so many great ingredients I felt for sure I’d love these and their hydrating formula.

Sometimes I feel like I’m purchasing and trying a different product than the rest of the world. E.L.F. Lip Kiss Balm make me feel this way. I watched video reviews on these and I read a ton of reviews on them and all are raving. Add in the fact that even on the E.L.F. website they gain a 4.0 review score and I was all, wait, I must have gotten a faulty batch because these are so not that great a formula.

I’ll tell you some good stuff before I get on to the really bad formula.

E.L.F. Lip Kiss Balms

First off, these are cute as hell. Really great packaging in my opinion! They come in a white barrel tube that features a tinted translucent lid. It’s a nice slick, cool looking packaging that makes me think of Apple products, like they look hecka pretty next to my iPhone. Dunno why I feel this way but yeah, they just look really neat. Unfortunately, they do not swivel all the way down which I found irritating as you’ll likely slice off a chunky when replacing the cap if you’re as klutzy as I am.

They aren’t only nicely packaged but the colors just grab you. These shades are really pretty and they actually swatches, as you can see, with plenty of color pay off and pigmentation. And let’s not forget the two buck price tag make ’em all kinds of budget friendly.

And that my friends is all I have to say good about this product.

This formula is horrible. These tug so horribly during application. It’s almost painful how hard I have to press to get color on my lips. I wouldn’t say the formula is dry during the application process, it’s just that the lip balm is very, very dense and they do not have an easy glide. The consistency is a very, very heavy balm that feels like an old, stale wax on lips. Instead of hydrating they literally suck moisture from my lips and there is absolutely nothing minty here. They have a straight up cinnamon fragrance and flavor that tastes horrible and doesn’t particularly smell nice either plus that cinnamon tingles a bit on lips. If you’re sensitive, AVOID! As I think the cinnamon could potential cause lips to swell up. I tried all four of the shades I purchased for this review and after my lips were red, raw, and dry. The application process is just painful as hell.

You definitely get full color here. They pack so much great pigment here much better pigment than I’ve seen across the board from a variety of different tinted lip balms but that does not take away from the fact that the formula is simply horrible.

E.L.F. Lip Kiss Balm gets a big thumb down. These get my seal of avoidance! Do not pass go, do not collect $200, go directly to makeup jail!

I was so excited to try these, but they lost me with the smell. And I even like strongly scented lip products! I found the scent of some shades to be almost medicinal. Like minty cough syrup.

I didn’t think the formula was terrible, but I didn’t try it for very long, due to the gross scent!

  • Elaine

Happy Day, Musey–I so appreciate your honesty—sometimes spending a few bucks is better. Thanks for sharing…. I have such dry lips—have liked the Jack Black products for balm. Use Bite lip mask at night…maybe day during the winter.

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Elaine! 🙂 Amen. Isn’t that the truth? Too many times I’m disappointed with drugstore makeup! Can just take that money and get something mid-range and be happier. I like Hourglass’s lip oil, that stuff is stupid good! Expensive but lovely!

  • Kelly Doe

That’s such a shame that they didn’t work out… I usually don’t like that much pigment in my lip balm, so I probably wouldn’t go for these.. I like them either clear or really sheer. lipstick is what I use when I want some more color 🙂

  • Rachel R.

I’m so sorry you had a bad experience with these. Be sure to contact e.l.f. and let their customer service know. They would probably send you replacements. I find them really good in these situations.

I love mine and have all the colors. Mine glide on and are moisturizing. They smell minty to me. I don’t get a cinnamon scent at all. I’m sensitive to cinnamon in lip products (I get swelling and itching), and these balms don’t bother me in the slightest.

  • Nikole

Oh crap. I already ordered and received a couple. Haven’t tried them yet, but definitely won’t be returning them – too much hassle for $4. Maybe I’ll have to wait for summer when my lips are less dry

  • Michelle D

I did not like these lip balms either! I found them to be quite drying, definitely not what I’m hoping for in a lip balm. These behave more like a lip stain to me. At least I was only out a few dollars.

    • Isabella Muse

that’s my thoughts, at least I didn’t spend a ton of $$ on ’em!

  • Jennifer

That’s so strange that yours smelled of cinnamon and were draggy. I ordered mine the day they were released and they smell minty and glide on the lips. It’s unfortunate you got a bad batch!

  • SisterhoodOfABlog

NOOOOOOO :'( I wanted to try these so badly cause they looked so cute and the colours looked so so pretty :'(
Thanks Muse! Sorry it turned out that they aren’t worth the $4 it took to buy them :/

    • Isabella Muse

It happens! You might want to try anyway, some people had success with ’em!

  • Lisa Ferguson Smith

I have three of these and thank goodness I didn’t have the same experience you did! They smell nice and minty and seem to do a pretty good job of keeping my lips soft. I have Smoochy Spice, Bare Kiss and Berry Sweet. Maybe you got a bad batch?….

  • Michelle

I just purchased XO Red at Target and I LOVE it! I wonder if there was a batch issue? I like it so much actually came here to see if you had swatches of the other colors since I am interested in trying the berry shade next.

    • Isabella Muse

It’s possibly Michelle as a lot of the comments here say people loved it. Could be I got a crappy batch! :-/

  • Michelle

I just purchased XO Red at Target and I LOVE it! Soft and smooth and very comfotable to wear. The color is gorgeous…I love a red lip but sometimes I want something a little more sheer, and this product delivers beautifully! I wonder if there was a batch issue with yours? (It has been a month after your review, so its possible I have a newer batch.)

I like mine so much actually came here to see if you had swatches of the other colors..I want to try the berry next.

PS- Thank you for your thorough reviews, your site is a great resource!

    • Michelle

Whoops, sorry for the duplicate post, I thought my first did not go through!

    • Isabella Muse

Oh you’re fine. The comments are pending approval so they don’t appear right away 🙂 thanks for sharing more though about youw experience. I wish mine were as nice! I think it might have been a fluke because a lot of people expressed loving them! I might have just gotten some bad ones :-/ Aw thanks I’m so glad you’re enjoying the site xoxoxo!

  • Dianna

i got one of these today in flirty and perky pink.
it is also dry and hard to put on which is a shame because the color is vl nice.
i thought about mixing it into a clear lip balm i like but haven’t yet.

    • Isabella Muse

Glad I’m not alone I thought the texture was so dense and dry!

  • Princess Nary

I bought this in Bare Kiss and I LOVE it! Like some of the other commenters, I didn’t get the same results you did. I always look to your blog before I buy something…and even though you rated it unfavorably, I really liked the color so I figured I couldn’t go wrong with $2. Mine went on silky smooth – similar to Baby Lips. No issues with drying, no hard waxy feel, and the colo/glossy finish and minty flavor are a huge plus. I’ve worn it as my go-to lip color for the past week, reapplying 2-3 times a day as needed, with no issues. I even love it with no make-up on (maybe just this and some mascara). I’m from Arizona and it’s hot here…so maybe that has something to do with the way it affects the formula?

    • Isabella Muse

I’m just glad it worked for you Princess Nary! I think I got a bad batch because a lot of people felt they were very good! That COULD be it but it’s pretty hot in NY too! However, when I originally tried this it wasn’t quite as hot as it is now! I’m just glad you got a nice batch that worked 😀

  • Liane

Oh I wish I had read your review BEFORE buying this lip balm. My lips have been raw, sore and flaking for two days. I assumed it’s because hubby shaved his mustache down a bit but this morning they’re even worse!! That $2 has caused my mouth so much pain and my lips look like I’m diseased. Don’t do this to yourselves ladies! This stuff is pure evil!

      • Linda

You’re very welcome! I just went on an ELF haul after not wearing makeup for a couple of years and just wanted to start out on a more affordable brand to see if I would actually go back to makeup or not.

        • Isabella Muse

Excellent place to start! They have been releasing some very nice stuff lately 😀

          • Linda

I was doing research to see how some of their lip colors looked in real life and that’s how I came across your site. 🙂

          • Isabella Muse

😀 Well, welcome 😀 I’m glad you found me and I hope you’ll stick around!

  • rowan

You must’ve got a bad batch. I just got bare kiss and love it so much I found your site to look at swatches for other colors. It isn’t slick–it does apply like a regular wax chapstick which I do like b/c I need my dry lips to feel coated/protected. However, the effect is immediate and beautiful. My lips feel quenched and look plump and pouty… the color is deep but sheer, so lovely. There is a slight tingly, minty feeling too. I’m obsessed.

  • Emma J Shearer

I have one and i think you may have gotten a bad batch because mine doesn’t feel that way. It’s very hydrating to me. The only thing is it comes off easily when im drinking coffee.
