So the new Sephora Wonderful Cushion Foundation ($24) isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea but it sure is mine! The Sephora Wonderful Cushion Foundation is one of two new cushion makeup products that Sephora launched for Spring 2016.

I’m a cushion foundation fan but it isn’t something everyone is willing to embrace. The trend started in Korea and last year we started to see the trend trickle into the US and this Spring it’s becoming a rather huge part of the drugstore makeup scene.

Sephora Wonderful Cushion Foundation

If you’ve never used cushion makeup before this is simply a cushion-y sponge that’s saturated with a fluid or cream foundation which you can dab into with the included sponge for application or with a brush or even fingers. I like cushion makeup because the formula seems to have a lightness and natural finish that I haven’t personally come across when using BB Creams, liquids, or creams. I could be imagining this, of course, but cushion foundation seems to have a really great formula that absorbs easily and gives a very natural finish.

Sephora Wonderful Cushion Foundation is sadly available in a very limited shade selection of six colors. I fit in fine with the shade Cream and even Beige which I purchased to use in the Summer when my skin is a little darker. Both shades had a lighter beige undertone that worked well for my skin tone. Unfortunately there, one shade fits most mentality is kinda like the new Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation which is also available in a limited shade selection. I’m surprised because Sephora is rather legendary for releasing a variety shades in both their base and color cosmetic line. Perhaps in the future they’ll do more shades.

This comes in the typical chunky dual lid compact that cushion foundations favor. It opens to reveal the mirror and a sponge with a secondary lid that snaps closed over the cushion. It’s a rather large compact but it’s still fairly travel friendly.

I look for a lot of things in foundation but coverage isn’t one. I have duller skin with a little darkness around my jawline. I do not have acne nor do I have acne scarring or redness. I desire a sheer, lightweight foundation that brightens my skin, eases dullness, and conceals the little bit of darkness I have. I love foundations that give me a “my skin but better” appearance and that’s exactly what Sephora Wonderful Cushion Foundation does. This is a very sheer fluid foundation with a creamy, easy to absorb formula that’s lightly hydrating and sets to a smooth, satin finish that doesn’t adhere to drier skin. They say it has a light to medium coverage and that in fact is what will disappoint those who buy it. However, if you don’t mind a sheer, lighter yet natural coverage this is a formula for you. I’d liken this to consistency, texture, and coverage to It Cosmetics CC+ Veil Beauty Fluid Foundation and I think if you like the It Cosmetics formula you’ll love the Sephora one.

The wear time is a little iffy for me. I can get about seven hours from it before it fades but in the Summer, when it is warmer and I’m outside a good deal more, it’ll likely fade even faster. I don’t mind so much though as I love the way it looks on my skin. It brightens up my complexion, evens out my skin tone, and gives me a beautiful, natural finish.

If you don’t desire or need a ton of foundation you’ll love the Sephora Wonderful Cushion Foundation. There’s just enough light coverage here to brighten up your skin tone, even it out, and give it a fresh, natural appearance.

Loves this!

I think an important thing about cushion fndts is the air puff that should come with all of them (and I’m glad to see western brands are incorporating them as well). I remember when cushions started to be a trend in Korea one of the most raved characteristics was the air puff, which is not like the cotton or latex based sponges we are used to, this one does not absorb the product and pretty much deposits almost all of it on your skin and the “right” way it’s supposed to be used is with patting motions as opposed to dragging or buffing motions.
Lol such a long rant about a simple puff but I remember being soooo impressed by the darn thing that I just can’t believe ppl never talk about it. I even bought a set to use them with other cream and fluid products, works like a charm.

You are correct Daniela! Excellent point! Especially since regular sponges will suck up product very quickly 😀

Please do a cushion comparison post! With so many American companies launching cushions I want to see how they measure up to the Korean ones

I have used IT Cosmetics cushion foundation and I love it with the caveat that you don’t get much product for the price–especially if you like a medium to full coverage. It is an interesting delivery system but I am not sure that its the best or the most cost effective.

Very true also it dries out fast 🙁 It’s my favorite but yes, you don’t get a lot for your $$!

Hey Muse – between the PF one and the Sephora one, which do you like better? Which offers more coverage – I need a bit of coverage to even things out…. some days more than others!

And what is it with the scant shade offerings in cushion foundations? There’s no reason they can’t offer just as many shades as in a fluid foundation… Looks like if you could mix the cream and the beige shades in the Sephora one, it would be absolutely perfect! Now – why didn’t they think of that?! 😛

    • Isabella Muse

You need the PF one if you want more coverage Kim. I’m personally like both but I like the Sephora one a little bit better! 🙂 Exactly! I agree! But I have to admit I sometimes like the fact there aren’t a bunch of confusing shade choices as sometimes I am lucky and fit right into their lighter beige options ;-D

I just went to the launch of this foundation in Dubai and I thought the product was really innovative, I love the texture and agree with you that it is better on people who need less coverage. You can see my review

I really really was so tempted to buy these yesterday when I was at Sephora but my currency took a dive and now things are even more expensive than ever. Looking at the cushion blush and cushion lip balm/lipstick really truly did not help either. I felt so sad and I still do. A uni student like me with limited funds and places to go, with no makeup

I just purchased this at JC Penny’s Sephora store. Love it!
