Do You Wish Your Makeup Collection Was Smaller?

makeup collection

I was talking to my reader, Maria this morning and she asked if I wished my makeup collection was a bit smaller, a bit more minimal. I have to say I didn’t hesitate one single second with my reply.

I said…

Yes. I wish it was a lot smaller. As I get older I use a lot less on my face so I feel a bit wasteful that my collection is so huge. Also, I feel like I’m running out of ways to store the beast. When you need an entire room to store your makeup, well, you know it’s time to scale back!

I blame it on my blog though but if I didn’t have my blog? I think I’d be really happy with a say around 10 good lipglosses, a few lipsticks, several blushes, and one eyeshadow palette that contained all my favorite neutrals.

Now I can’t say the same for my fragrance and skincare collection as I’d likely be crushed without a ton of variety in fragrance and of course, I need all my skincare!

But makeup?

I kinda wish my collection was smaller at times! I tend to rotate things seasonally and I go through it every 5 to 6 months to see what needs tossing, what can be donated, and what I’m not using that can be gifted to friends or family. It’s a little wasteful at times because I’m not always using the products I really love since the beauty world moves so quickly and I’m always testing out something new.

Blogging the next best thing prevents me from just sitting down and enjoying my favorites sometimes.

How about you?

Do you sometimes with your makeup collection was smaller?

Or do you love the chaos of a big giant beast of a collection?

Do share!

Hey Sista Muse! I’m a minimalist by nature, so yes, I wish I hadn’t gone so overboard with needing to collect just about every high-end eyeshadow palette on the planet. That said, I also do not hoard, so I’m constantly rotating stuff. I recently gave some things away, and I sold off a whole chunk of my stash as well. Now if I would just stop (or at least slow down) on buying new items, I’d be just about where I’d like to be.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m not! I’m a hoarder lol! 🙂 I keep everything and organize things to death. I really wish I could scale back in a major way!!!!!!!! I envy you!

      • Karen

I can’t say that it gets better. I’m in my 40s and my makeup collection gets bigger and bigger. I tell everyone that this is my midlife crisis. Lol

        • Isabella Muse

lol I wish that was my excuse. I tell everyone “it’s for the blog” what bs

  • Kimmwc03

I definitely wish my collection was smaller. It can be overwhelming at times. I’ve been trying to do some spring cleaning lately and get rid of stuff but I don’t want to just trash it all and I can’t seem to find anyone to give stuff away to. I would try one of those makeup selling sites but I don’t know how that works.

    • Isabella Muse

Oh yeah they have one where they give you a bag, you fill it, send it out, and they pay you for it. Glam something I think it is called. But they only give you a few bucks, like a $1 for mac eyeshadow!

      • Dena Mcclure

Please be sure to do your research before selling to this site which is called Glambot. I have read many reviews from a seller’s point of view which indicate very poor offers and a lot of work to ship the items to them. I can personally say the customer service is not very good at all.

  • Maria A

I too feel like I need every new eyeshadow and blush that comes out. I realize for every 5 things I give away I purchase 7 (shameful I know lol)I feel like when you have a large collection you really don’t get to enjoy it all bc there is a crap ton of stuff.

    • Isabella Muse

Agreed! You got me seriously thinking about this today lol! I feel it is worst when you blog because you can’t even enjoy something before the next big thing is on the way!

      • Maria A

Muse if I blogged I would freak out. I would seriously feel overwhelmed. My 6 yr old daughter is like you got makeup up again? You have enough mommy. lol. Sometimes I seriously want to get rid of almost everything and just keep 3 eyeshadow palettes and 3 blushes, some lipsticks and a few tubes of lipgloss. I feel like deciding what makeup I want to use in the am is turning into a job but yet I cannot stop buying the stuff. I guess there are worse habits out there to have, so ours isn’t that bad lol. PS the new tarte spring gel eyeliners “mint” and “blue” to die for and creamy as heck. Since we are talking make up lol.

        • Isabella Muse

lol! I love she’s telling you that you have enough! The voice of reason as told by a six year old haha 😀 Can I borrow her please? I know I’d regret it deeply if I destashed in a major way so I guess I’ll have to keep it all haha! I haven’t tried them! I was worried the mint would drown me out, ugh stop creating lemmings! We are supposed to be talking smaller stashes! and now you’re making me buy more makeup! Shame on you!

  • Jackie Moranville

I agree! I’m constantly buying new stuff because it’s on sale and too good of a deal to pass up, and then…oh, crap…where am I going to PUT all of this? 😀

  • Heidi

I also wish my collection was smaller. I am trying to toss more stuff that hasn’t been used for a while or things I just don’t care for. Then something new comes up that’s exciting and I buy more.

  • Christina Louise

I wish mine was smaller too!!! I am always looking for my one “IT” product of each category and feel like if I could just find “IT” in everything then I would be able to have my perfect capsule makeup bag and just replace my perfect products as they come out. But then I get sucked in my pretty packaging or great reviews or changes in my skin, oily eyelids, dark spots I didn’t used to have, lips lines etc and have to change my search for “IT”!

    • Isabella Muse

I agree! If I can create a selection of holy grail items I’d be set!

  • Dora

Yes! Mine isn’t so big (I mean, big for a normal human, but not big for a makeup junkie) EXCEPT when it comes to lip products. I dream of having like five in each category: nude, red, pink, plum. I know 20 lipsticks sounds like a lot (again, to a normal human) but it would feel so sane compared to what I have. And yet! I keep buying them: three at the Sephora VIB sale! Sigh.

  • Katie

When I got into makeup about 4 years ago, my collection grew at an exponential rate. About a year ago, I realized my collection was getting out of hand, and I didn’t touch 80% of my collection and had no idea if I even liked using those products. I started doing some swapping and selling to improve my collection, as well as decrease the size. I joined the subreddit Makeup Rehab and have really started focusing on rotating all of my products so that everything gets used, as welling as using up products, and not buying anything for awhile.

Because I have gotten to know my products better, I know which ones I just don’t like, and I have been much more proactive with destashing and being realistic about my collection. My collection is still fairly large (~30 lip products, ~30 blushes, ~10 eyeshadow palettes), but it feels manageable, and pretty much all of the products bring me joy.

  • blee

Nope, I like my make up stash. I don’t buy everything out there, but I like most of what I got. OT What happened at Sephora? My 2nd order shipped and my 1st has not? Odd and some thing are OOS? Hummmm, odd. Anyone else see this happen to them? 🙂

  • Briana

I don’t have that large a collection to begin with (Since I have very limited space), but it is still quitteeeeeeeee big! I seem to want EVERYTHING but I think I’m teaching myself to be more appreciative and less greedy. Every few months I go on “no-buys” where I don’t buy anything no matter how much I want it. January and February I bought nothing new which let me see what came out and what I really wanted. Hoping to do another this May!

  • Natalie

I am a minimalist now, but many years ago I wasn’t and I felt overwhelmed by the amount of makeup, the amount of ‘free gifts’ with purchas, and samples I had. Now my entire collection fits into a Muji acrylic two drawer holder and bulkier items in one drawer of a Container Store acrylic holder which is taller but is like only 6 inches square and I still have room to spare. A well edited collection of makeup that all works for me suits me better now that I am older. If something works for me I stick with it. If I get something new I check reviews first and don’t make impulse purchases. And I like saving money instead of having loads of products I don’t use. But, I don’t know how anyone could have an edited collection and have a beauty blog though. I feel like I still have plenty of makeup and don’t feel deprived at all and am way happier the way I have it now.

  • Jay

Completely agree! Sometimes I get really overwhelmed, and start feeling guilty when I don’t get to use some products because I’m trying to use others. It’s a difficult balance, because I love to try new stuff but if I “try” 100 lipsticks, do I truly have the opportunity to enjoy them? That’s barely 3 uses per year. AND it all expires which really, really sucks. At least an expensive handbag doesn’t grow mold lol–but it’s easier to afford a Chanel blush rather than a purse!

  • Missy

Yes, I feel that way, too.. I do rotate seasonally and try to use everything (so they don’t get hurt feelings LOL).. I am very fortunate to have a makeup-obsessed niece that is my exact coloring so I pass ALOT of stuff on to her which makes her very happy 😀 My daughter is also makeup-obsessed but opposite me in coloring. That also works – if it’s too cool for me, it goes to her. ***See, I’m justifying my massive stash***

BUT I am nearing 50 and I’m beginning to wonder how long I can wear winged liner and corally lipstick. Sooo someday my stash will definitely diminish. I do enjoy it though 😀

    • Isabella Muse

LOL so there are no hurt feelings 🙂 yup! Sounds about right!

  • Agona

I did a great makeup purge in 2014; I tossed everything. EVERYTHING. :-O Now I only allow myself 3 of everything (lipstick & blush in neutral/cool/warm colors, foundation in pressed/loose/CC cream, eyeliner in black liquid/black pencil/beige inner rim) except for the “base” stuff, which I only have 1 each (eye/ primer, mascara, face primer, highlighter, bronzer, face mist). Eyeshadows is where I start to feel a teensy overwhelmed…I allow myself no restrictions on eyeshadows. I forsee another purge (hopefully, more like a declutter) in a couple of years. :-O Except for BE Ready; it’s my HG eyeshadow so I’m allowed to hoard it! 🙂

  • Monet

I feel the same way. If it weren’t for my instagram page/youtube channel I wouldn’t have as much makeup as I do. My makeup collection is not big compared to some people’s collection it’s still bigger than the average collection. Sometimes it does feel a bit cumbersome so I do in fact wish it was a little smaller so I didn’t feel so wasteful.

  • TropicalChrome

Yes, I do. Even though my stash is markedly smaller than many mentioned here, it’s getting to the point where I’m forgetting what products I have, not to mention not bothering to use them.

I’m finding it’s starting to be a self-solving problem – when I see how much I have, I don’t want any more. I can’t tell you how many sales and promotions I’ve passed up lately – I’m amazed that I bothered to use my Sephora discount, but that was only because I found a foundation I love (then I read the reviews and everyone else hates it, oh well) and decided to splurge.

It’s even working on my nail polish collection – I love nail polish, but it’s getting harder and harder for colors to wow me because I already have so many.

The biggest problem for me is what to do with the makeup I don’t want/won’t use. I have it all in a box in a closet because I haven’t yet brought myself to toss it all, but because it’s all been used, I don’t think I can do anything else with it.

  • Rachel R.

Nope; I love the variety of having a huge collection. It keeps me from being bored. It makes me happy to see and play with all the pretty colors. However, I do keep it really organized, and I weed through it regularly. That why it doesn’t get overwhelming.

  • Gabriella

I did a huge purge this year and I’m only left with one makeup remover, I’ve facial oil, one face mask, one moisturizer, one cleanser, one mascara, one translucent powder, three concealers, one black eyeliner and six individual eyeshadows. Buuuuuuuut, I have 22 Lipstick Queen lipsticks!! I have a major problem holding back whenever Lipstick Queen comes out with a new lipstick or gloss though I wear them every single day. Is it normal to be sucked into one brand like this?

      • Gabriella

Lol Yes I’ve seen Eden and I feel like I’ve just got to have it but I already have five reds from lipstick queen! I haven’t seen any swatches of it but judging by the description it sounds like a cross between ‘Medieval’ and ‘Have Paris’ from the Silver Screen collection. The way I’ve rambled on just shows how sucked in I am to this brand

        • Isabella Muse

yeah I was thinking it was like Medieval but yeah that didn’t stop me from buying it anyway haha!

  • dia

I wish mine was bigger! My entire makeup collection fits into a lunchbox. I simply haven’t got the money to buy all the things I want. 🙁

  • BabyBeans

Yes, I wish my collection was only about half the size it is, probably less. I’ve gotten into a bad habit of just collecting makeup, it’s so natural to buy more all the time. I bought a bookshelf thing with baskets just to store my make up. I’m so glad my boyfriend has accepted my addiction.

  • Cathy

I wish my makeup collection wasn’t that big! I have it all in an Ikea Alex drawer, the famous one from all Youtubers. I have done a few decluters but every time there is a sale I need to buy something in sale!!! For God sakes!!! when else can you buy it at a discount price?

Now Im moving and the new place has less closet space!!! and I see all the make up and I know I don’t really need all of it! I don’t really need it! but I like it! I like to have the options… I like to watch videos and been able to recreate the eye looks cuz I have the products. It sad!!! but it makes me happy!

On a daily basis my make up is so basic that it fits on a makeup bag. There is no need for me to have all the naked and nude shadows but I do have them all! when I don’t even use eye shadow in a daily basis!!! aww the struggle!!!

  • Iris

I wish mine was smaller. I’ve made a few impulse purchases which will take me a while to use up.

  • Carrie

Sometimes I do. I’ve only gotten into makeup fairly recently, so part of it is trying things and seeing what I like/don’t like. At least that’s what I tell myself. Lol.

  • genevieve

The only area in which my makeup collection is huge is my eye shadow palettes. I have made a few too many purchases in the past and some of them aren’t as good as I thought (Dior Navy Design for example).
I have made a resolution to use just one foundation at a time (it is killing me), one blush, two mascaras. And I am trying to use up most of my lipsticks before I purchase any more…..that is really hard.

  • mirandagrosvenor

HAYLE NO!! As Jacqueline Susann so eloquently said (about a totally different subject but the quote fits) “Some people collect stamps or butterflies. I collect this.”

  • Zovesta

Nope! I have every single 300+ lipstick memorized, know exactly what each eyeshadow looks like, know which foundation goes well for my skin at what time, and could only part with maybe ONE blush. I don’t want to add to my collection but, well… my point is, if anything was missing, I’D KNOW. And be very sad. =(

  • waymire

I’m steadily downsizing mine. I have a way to go but it’s going. Took me a long time to come to grips with the addiction aspect.. and it is an addiction, a substitute for whatever you are lacking in your life. Nobody needs that much makeup, and nobody can use that much. Once you get that through your head you can start to see how the media feeds it, how they manipulate you to make you want it. I still watch youtube.. but only while I’m on the treadmill each morning, keeps me motivated.. like a treat.. and even then I’m careful about the topic. I’ve unsubbed to all the emails, blogs, etc. I have no idea what’s on sale. The only reason I’m reading this right now is because I was researching minimal makeup collections for inspiration and it popped up. I stay out of Ulta and Sephora, and the makeup section everywhere else, as much as I can. I will sometimes purge large sections at once.. but I’m continuously pulling old products out, using, and then judging them. Like is not enough.. love or it goes. A major roadblock for me (besides the buying) was not wanting to throw any of it away.. “I’ll get rid of it when I find a new home for it”… but that is foolish. It’s going to go bad anyway before I can ever use it up.. and nobody I know personally wants it. I’ve made the mistake already, it’s no more of a waste sitting in a drawer than it is in the trash. I’m getting very close to the “big purge”… and I mean big. I really want to get to a normal, healthy, usable collection. I want a fancy, old fashioned vanity with an easily organized selection of high quality products I love, that always work. I recently was reading about the idea of seasonal capsule “wardrobes” for makeup… color cosmetics that fit the season that rotate a few times a year, like the old seasonal collections we used to see on the market… a blush, a little eye palette, a couple of lip colors… that you add to your basic neutral wardrobe to give it some spice while still using a very small collection. I may experiment with that soon.
