Play by Sephora June

My Play by Sephora June Beauty Box arrived and I thought I’d do a quick unboxing. June’s Play Box is called The Minimalist and contains an assortment of nude, minimalist makeup and beauty options.

You likely already subscribe to Play but if you never heard about it before I’ll give you a brief low down. Sephora launched their own beauty box service last Summer and made it available in select cities. Just recently they had open enrollment for the box which actually quickly became closed again. Upon launching June’s box they again opened enrollment for the box. Place your name on the wait list and you’ll get an invite to sign up next month. That seems to be the way they are working the subscription as with each new box launch they sent me an invite to sign up (I’m already signed up but I keep getting invites after my box ships). So even though enrollment is wait list at moment you’ll likely get an invite to join next month when July’s box ships!

As you may already know I got my first Sephora Play Box last month and I was a little disappointed with the contents. If I’m being honest, I really didn’t like the June contents however, they were much more generous compared to last month’s offering. So, in this case, it’s only about personal preference! Some of these items aren’t really what I enjoy using but as far as actual value, this box contains a nice assortment of goodies for the $10 price tag.

Here’s a look!

Play by Sephora

June’s box contains an assortment of products inspired by a minimal makeup or beauty routine. Mmm, it’s debatable if you feel if you feel like these are your ideal minimalist picks. Basically Sephora is going for a bronzed, sun kissed look with fluttery lashes and that’s the assortment of items this box includes to get the look. If you like a bronzed beauty look this box is most definitely for you! If you’re not a tan of tanning or bronzing, like me, you might feel it’s a miss.

  • Tarte TarteGuard 30 (0.23 oz)

  • Becca Backlight Priming Filter (0.20 oz)

I’ve tried quite a few of these items already and I’m not a huge fan of any of them but I still think the box was a very nice, curated selected of good size samples for the $10. If you read my original unboxing you know I was pretty disappointed with the contents I think that June’s Box redeemed my disappointment and I’m looking forward to seeing what July brings.

As with all the Sephora Play Boxes this includes a step by step get the look guide, details on each product and how to use them, as well as a Play card that you can bring in store for a mini makeup using the products in your box. The card also gets you actual Sephora points if you purchase anything in store (50 points)!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I thought that this month’s box was better than last month’s box. I had been wanting to try the Becca primer and I really like the perfume so I was mostly happy with it.

    • Isabella Muse

Much! I wasn’t thrilled with the contents as I tried a few of these items already or own a few even but I was still much much happier with this month’s boxed compared to last month’s!

I was finally able to subscribe for it after waiting for a long, long time lol. The only other box I subscribe to is Allure’s beauty box which is $5 more than this one. I enjoy the Allure one since it always has more skin care sample, the sizes are usually big enough to last me more than a couple of uses and there’s always at least one full size product. Last month they had the Foreo play and everyone lost their minds trying to get one lol. I do agree that the sephora box offers samples I would usually get with a purchase (and I’ve hoarded quite a few samples so far) but I like the idea of getting samples without making an actual purchase. I’m just weird like that I’ll have to wait and see what the July box has to offer.

My subscription started with the April box, which I loved, then I thought last month’s was just okay, and this month’s was somewhere in between. I already use the B&B product daily, so it is nice to have a travel size, and the bronzer is way too orange for my fair, cool skin.

But I was shocked with how much I ended up loving the Becca primer – as someone with super sweaty/oily skin I NEVER thought I could wear a primer with shimmer. For the summer I still prefer the Hourglass primer since it has SPF, but I’m pretty sure this Becca one will be my new winter go-to!

    • Isabella Muse

For me it was somewhere in between too. It’s a lot of nice stuff but it’s also stuff that doesn’t work for me or stuff I didn’t like! I didn’t even try the Becca because I was worried it would be too much, you have me curious now 😀 I’ll have to try it!

I love reading the different opinions on the boxes. I am still on the waiting list and many of the items appear to be about the size of some GWP or some of the Ulta freebies they have behind the counter and just give out randomly or if you ask nicely, so I guess it may all add up to $10? Still some nice products to try out before a full commitment.

    • Isabella Muse

Sorry! I’m surprised a spot hasn’t opened up for you! yes! It’s about the size of some of the Sephora perk items! I don’t consider myself terribly frugal but I do question if it is worth the ten bucks! I’m going to keep trying it for a few more months and see how it goes, so far everything I got I already tried or I didn’t like so, the ten bucks might be better spent on a drugstore pick up yanno
      ?

My friend has been on the waiting list for quite a while and never heard anything. The day I received my box, I went on to try to see if using a different email address would help her. I didn’t even get on a waiting list–I was able to purchase a subscription right then. So, I’d suggest going to the Play site and seeing if there are any openings. If not, start checking the website around the middle of the month as they seem to open spots when the new boxes arrive. I hope you’re able to get a subscription!

For regular Sephora customers these samples are too ordinary. It feels like they’re just trying to get rid of old stuff…and the bronzers rarely complement various skin tones. I like getting sunscreen, but I’ve seen all of this before.

    • Isabella Muse

I agree. It’s a lot of older stuff. I think it’s nicely curated for the season, Summer, but come on Tarte Tarteguard launched what over a year ago? old news!

    • Lulle

My thoughts exactly! I was very disappointed by this box, personally I liked last month’s box a lot more. To me it feels like this box only contains samples that have been available in the recent past either as “weekly specials” with a code or as 100 points rewards. Nothing new, nothing super exciting, and They’re Real mascara? Seriously? They gave that away 3 years ago as a birthday gift!

  • Jules

I finally got to sign up yesterday! I personally think I’ll get my money’s worth. I so rarely use up a full size anything, so 5 deluxe samples for the price of 1-2 drugstore products that I will be lucky to use a quarter of? Works for me! I think this might even save me money.

  • Rina

Not impressed again.. I’m a three strikes girl, so if July tanks, I’m out. I get more enjoyment from the Target boxes lately, LOL!

  • Susan

I must be easy to please! Haha! I’ve gotten this since January and haven’t been disappointed yet. I figure it’s nice to get five deluxe samples (plus the perfume) for $10, considering they are often the size of a 100 point perk, which equals $100 of money spent in Sephora. I also love to try new things and experiment, so it gives me that option without breaking my budget. Sometimes it gets me out of my box, like one commenter said about the Becca primer and having oily skin.

  • Michelle

I could really live very happily if I never received another sample of this mascara. When I saw it in the box, I wanted to toss the whole thing. >:-[

  • Linda

It wasn’t worth it for me. I tried it and ended up cancelling.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m still on the fence myself! But we shall see what the next box brings!

  • Dawnn

Finally got in so hoping July is good, I currently have Ipsy, BirchBox, Elf, Walmart, Target & A few other non make up boxes (yes the addiction is real) the last few Sephora boxes haven’t impressed me as much as I had hoped. I have been wait listed for what seems like nearly a year and really hope first box doesn’t disappoint.

  • Anita

I’ve been on the wait list since April and never heard a word from Sephora. Then I read on My Subscription Addiction that people were getting in. I went to the Sephora site and got to subscribe for a monthly box right away. Still no word if I’m getting the June or July box.

  • Tracy

I was about to cancel then I received this box. I already have full size versions of 3 of them so I was happy to get travel sizes. I’ve been receiving them from the start so I may give it one more month.

  • Christina

I got my first box in May and wasn’t impressed, this month’s was better I thought. I’m going to give it till September. I love love love the Target box and just got my first Walmart box recently and thought it was a great value too!

    • Anita

I’m waiting to receive my 1st Sephora box hopefully this June. I also loved my Target box, which was awesome. The Walmart box was also nice for the price.
