I thought I’d do a Sephora Play December 2016 unboxing today as I got my box in the mail over the weekend and had a chance to play around a little with the contents!

Here’s a look!

Ok, so good news, I have finally decided to quit you Sephora Play Box! Yeah, so, this is my last Sephora Play Box. Sadly, the contents are too uneventful for me. I’d rather use the $10 towards something else in all honesty. This box in particular was boring snoring so, I decided to go ahead and finally cancel my subscription.

What was inside?

A lot of reruns of stuff you may already have in your stash like Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray and Make Up For Ever Primer. Meh! There are also a few items that might perk you up like the Nirvana Rose Perfume sample although, this was uneventful for me as I already own it. Another highlight here is the Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red. Again, not new, but Sephora is promoting their Cream Lip Stains heavily lately and seems like they are headed for a big Spring 2017 push on those. The formula, as always, is delightfully lightweight, non-drying, lightweight, and pigmented. This shade is a festive red for the Holidays. They included a Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo and Lancome Hypnose Mascara as well!

The box was pretty meh for me. The reason I subscribed to these boxes to begin with was to try new and exciting products but Sephora keeps stocking them with a lot of older items. I mean, at this point, who hasn’t tried UD All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray right?

Sephora’s December Play 2016 Box was blah for me! I think I’m done now.

Did you get your December Box?

My box was similar but I got the Vanilla Bourbon scent in the perfume and a Bobbi Brown Smokey eye mascara. Very disappointing box since I’ve tried it all before. I’m going to give Sephora one more chance and then I’m cancelling.

  • LIANE

I got the exact same box and was equally underwhelmed. I’ve liked the previous few and won’t be canceling my subscription, but I would like to see a healthier balance between makeup, skin care and hair care.

  • Yelena

I did sephora play for about 3 ‘months before realizing the products were not new or exciting so I cancelled and tried ipsy. I gave it a good 6 months oold so but ultimately decided to cancel as well with my December box. There were hits and misses but the bad outweighed the good which was frustrating because you do a personalized test so u get a personalized bag. That was true for the most part but there were some items I repeatedly said I did not want and got them anyway. (Eg face masksetc)

    • Isabella Muse

same with Sephora, it’s supposed to be personalized but I keep getting stuff for oily skin!

  • AnniLau

Apparently I’m the odd man out, but I really liked this box. I’d pretty much decided to cancel my subscription going into the new year, but December had so many products I’ll actually use that I’m going to give it another month or three.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m glad you liked it! I wish I felt the same but it was a uneventful for me 🙁

  • Wendy

I’ve never tried that Detox by Drybar, but their product — Triple Sec — IS TO DYE FOR. I love love love it. One of our customers had overstock and gave me like 5 cans. Weee!

  • Ashley

I’m the one makeup weirdo that has never tried any urban decay setting spray!

I actually really enjoyed this box, because I’ve wanted to try the Nirvana Rose (LOVE IT!), I hadn’t tried any of the MUFE primers (also love that), wanted to try the Detox (holy crap, the scent is unbelievable), AND wanted to try the setting spray. I knew I liked the lip stain formula already, but I agree that I’m tired of getting reds because they’re just so subjective. My mascara sample was the Lancome, and it is SO smelly that I don’t think I can use it. This box was very nearly my dream box just because I so rarely get to go to Sephora in person, and it was just so many things I wanted to try at once.

I do wish, though, that we could see more body products. That would make this a much more balanced subscription, I think.

    • Isabella Muse

You aren’t weird at all! 🙂 The Nirvana Rose is def a plus! I already have it but it was a highlight in this box! I’m glad this box turned out good for you!!!!! 😀

  • EliCaroline

I decided to cancel my subscription after this box as well.
It was so disappointing. I already have a full size of the Dry Bar spray, and it seems like there’s mascara and primer in almost every box.
I think I am going to use my $10 towards a boxycharm next month.

    • Isabella Muse

hell, I’m going to use the $10 towards something full size rather than a not box!

  • Tabitha

Girl, I quit my box the month we got Blotterazzi & the first aid clay face wash. Decided to end it on a good note & was happy the Blotterazzi finally made it worth it. I knew it was only downhill from there.

    • Isabella Muse

I kept saying I’m going to cancel it, I’m going to cancel it, and I didn’t! Finally I said that’s it, this sucks lol!

  • Thea

I cancelled a few months back for the same reason! Also just cancelled the Beautycon Box…same thing. And why do thise boxes always seem to send either red or hot pink lipstick??? Just once I want to get a color I can actually wear.

      • CL

From my experience with Sephora Play!, if you don’t get a fuschia or red lipstick, you get an orangey, browney, nude that’s ugly on almost everyone. That’s a big part of why I quit.

        • Emily

Seriously, that orange smashbox a couple months ago? Too bad it was so long-wearing.

          • Liane Sarah Graham

Oh my god I LOVE that Smashbox and was thrilled to get it in my box because I would have never chosen it for myself. It worked so well I wore it for my engagement shoot. \_(ツ)_/

  • Caroline

I think I’m going to cancel, too! I got the same box as you and I literally already owned every single item except the perfume, which I don’t love. Pretty sure I could spend the $10 elsewhere and be perfectly happy! 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

I kept saying to myself, “Well gee I could have put ten bucks towards the new Sweet Peach Blush or something else I’d actually like and want” I finally just called it quits and cancelled. It’s just too meh of a box!

  • Aretsuya

I agree with your assessment, Ms. Muse. I also cancelled my Play subscription and used that $10 a month towards my Zoe Report Box of Style. I add $60 to the $30 I save from three months of Play and in addition to getting some awesome accessories and house goods, I get a full sized Sunday Riley cream and Clinique lip pop color/primer. In another box, I got a full sized IT Cosmetics brow pencil and lip stain with the usual accessories and house goods. Come on, Sephora…you’ve gotta up your game here.

  • Leticia

I got the exact same items as you, this time. I also wasn’t that impressed either, but I’m hoping there will be enough complains so that Sephora will step up their game with the Play boxes. So not giving up on them yet lol!

  • Linda

I cancelled after one month for same reason: uneventful and I already have most of the offerings.

  • Emily

My box has shipped, but I haven’t received it yet. Supposedly I’ll be getting the Bobbi Brown mascara, which is probably my favorite mascara of all, so I’m happy to have another one of those. I like the small sizes for mascara, because I rarely use up a full size before the recommended discard date. I already have and never use that Drybar dry shampoo. I really don’t think dry shampoo does anything for me. I’m eager to try the cream lip stain, but already have more reds than I could ever use. Also it would’ve been nicer to receive it earlier in the month, as most holiday parties have already passed. And, another primer?! I am so overloaded with primers, again which I rarely use. I guess I’ll try the setting spray; I generally don’t use setting sprays because they just seem like a bad/drying/irritating idea to me, but I suppose I can try it. I recently cancelled the Allure Beauty Box, but I think I’ll keep the Sephora Play. For only $10/month, it’s worth it for the fun, for me.

  • Jana

I also cancelled after this box. Mine was a different reason, though. I know it’s only a $10 box, but the sizes of the items. I mean, really? They’re tiny! Each time I think, next month will be better. But nope. Constant tiny items.

I’ve been the Ipsy route, and continually got things I didn’t want. And now I’ve been the Play route with the microscopic items. I’ve decided I’m done with subscription boxes for good. Instead I’m going to save up that money, and every few months get myself something good that I really want, but otherwise wouldn’t spend the money on. That way I know I’ll always be happy with what I get.

  • ann b.

I cancelled a few months ago. I decided I’d rather spend the $120/year on things I really want.

  • Maggie

I canceled mine too.. I gave most of the box away to friends. I tried the dry shampoo and it smelled horrible!

I moved last week and did not change my address in time, so no box yet : (. I still feel the 10.00 is a good value, because in order to get one 100 point freebie, you have to spend 100.00 at Sephora. Here you’re getting 5 items for much, much less. I look at it like its 2.00 an item and since I travel a lot, I save them for that.

  • Jeri S

I got the same box as Kim and I was pretty happy with everything except the lippie. I don’t like red and I don’t like matte, but other than that I was pleased.

  • Lauren

I got the same box as you. Sephora Play is my only subscription and I like it because I like that it is ‘real’ brands that I know and trust, less hit or miss than other boxes. It may be “meh” but I know I will use it all. I travel quite a bit and I especially love having a stash of reliable travel size products.

  • Recklace

I got the exact same box. I already have the perfume, the primer and the all-nighter spray, but I love them all so I’ll throw these small sizes in my travel bag. The lippie is a total fail for me, but I always love mascara samples and I think the Lancôme is actually really good. The box is like this for me just about every month: mostly stuff I already have, one crappy item and one new item to try. For $10/month, it’s worth it for me, even if I just keep my travel bag well-stocked. Way better than Birchbox, for sure, but I do wish there were more skincare products in the boxes.
