CeraVe Skin Renewing Gel Oil ($23.99) is a new unique facial gel oil that contains five different ceramides to hydrate skin. I started using CeraVe about two years ago when my skin started freaking out during the Winter. I had flaky cheeks, flaky eyelids, tightness, etc…I’m typically sensitive only dry but for some my skin had a melt down during the cold weather and the only thing that helped was CeraVe. Fast forward, present day, and many of their items have become some of my favorite skincare picks like their Skin Renewing Night Cream which is really rather awesome.

Fast forward to Spring 2017 and the brand is launching a few new products to their permanent line one of which is the innovative Skin Renewing Gel Oil. I’m seeing a lot of unique and innovative skin picks the drugstore this month! Gel oils, cleansing oil scrubs, etc…hmmm! I like this new trend because skincare can be pretty cut and dry!

Let’s take a look at my review and thoughts on the new CeraVe Skin Renewing Gel Oil.

I picked up CeraVe Skin Renewing Gel Oil at Ulta back in December when there was a 20% off coupon code available but if you’re interested there’s a better deal now. CeraVe is buy 1, get 1 50% off plus save an additional 20% off using coupon code 400295 at Ulta.com.

This comes in a 1 oz pump jar and I have to admit I thought it was a LITTLE expensive at $24 dollars. But hey, you never have to pay retail for drugstore skincare right? You’re bound to get a deal at some point so, mentioning the point is probably redundant.

This is exactly what they say it is! A gel that’s an oil. I know, sounds weird right? Pumped out of the tube it’s a gel-like consistency but once massaged and applied onto your face it breaks down into a lightweight oil. I use a lot of Korean and Japanese skincare products so, I have to admit most skincare innovations in the US fail to impress me. This was very impression and unique. It’s just a very interesting way to apply facial oil. First of all it doesn’t drip out of your hands nor is it messy. I don’t know about you but I’ve made a mess once or twice when applying facial oil plus it leaves my hands rather greasy. The fact this transforms into a oil during the application makes for a lot less mess. It also seems to absorb a lot more easier and doesn’t leave skin with a greasy or shiny film. It’s very hydrating and it smooths and softens skin plus it has no fragrance. Not to mention this contains ceramides to help fortify and rebuild your skin’s natural layers which is awesome for preventing aging and helping to retain moisture.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Gel Oil is absolutely brilliant pick up and truly an innovative skincare pick from the brand. I think it’ll be a welcome addition to any skin types routine. It provides moisture without being heavy or too rich and it helps your to retain that moisture while preventing it from aging. Truly a great product.

I loved it.

Muse Approved.

Holy Hydration Batman! This sounds utterly amazing!! Was planning a trip to Ulta tomorrow anyway so I hope my store has it in stock as I cannot wait to try this. Exactly what I need right now. Thank you for your great review and bringing this to our attention!

  • Jay

Yay yay yay! So glad you enjoyed it! I love CeraVe and I can’t wait to grab this! I agree that the price is a bit steep, even for them. But hey if it’s works, money well spent. I have some Ulta store credit too so I’d be nuts to pass up 20% off 🙂

    Hi Muse
Is this a facial oil that you use during your nightime renewal routine or would you feel comfortable wearing this during the day? I’m typically combination oily but during a recent makeup application I was told my skin was really dry. I couldnt see it until she put on a foundation and powder set because all I saw was a shiny nose.

    • Isabella Muse

I wouldn’t, it’s too greasy for me for daily use. It’s something I use nightly 🙂

  • Jan

I love CeraVe. I use their Skin Renewing Cream Serum on my neck in the evening. It contains retinol and is the only retinol I can tolerate on my neck. I can’t wait to try a non greasy product. Great review. Thank you.

  • Lauren

I love Cerave products, so this is so tempting to try. I’ve got super-sensitive skin, though, so I’m scared to try it, in case the oil makes me break out. I’m just now getting over a major breakout caused by Shea Moisture shampoo/conditioner that has taken weeks to heal, even though I only used the combination for a few days, so I’m especially leery right now.

  • Rachel

Ugh, there are 3 palm derivatives in here. I would be a face full of cystic acne if I tried this. I want to use CeraVe and I never have a good time with it :-/

  • Jes

Ooh. I have this in my stash. Looks like I’ll be breaking it out. Do you think it is appropriate for daytime use, under makeup?

    • Isabella Muse

Not for me, it’s a little too much for day use for my skin. But if you’re extra dry it could work! 😀

      • Jes

Hmm. Maybe I’ll try it on some of my drier areas for the daytime. As always, thanks for being my favorite beauty blogger. If I ever start up my beauty blog/vlog I’ll have to get you to guest star 😉

      • Caroline

I actually mix a little bit of this into foundation and it works really well for any dry area of my face. Because of the gel texture and the design of the pump, which allows for precise dispense of the product, it is so much easier compared to working with face oil.

        • Isabella Muse

that’s a rather brilliant idea! I wonder if it’ll be too rich for me? I’ll have to try!

  • LouAnne

I have this and really like it too for my combination skin. But what has become a huge HG for me is the new CeraVa Day Cream with SPF 30 that was launched with this gel oil… Like you, I love Japanese products and have been using Japanese sunscreens for years because they worked as a primer for me as well and were not shiny. The CeraVe sunscreen is one of the best US facial sunscreens I have found… It is not shiny… dries matte and acts as a perfect primer… my makeup lasts all day with no problem with this… I have already bought a second bottle as a backup. The only problem I had is the pump on the day cream bottle didn’t work well at first… but is working fine now. I am looking forward to seeing your review of this new product as well and see if you had the same results that I have.

    • Isabella Muse

awesome! I’m testing it now, will share my thoughts soon! Happy to hear you’re liking it LouAnne! Sounds like you had a good run with it so far!!!!!!!

  • Lesley

Will you be trying the new day cream with SPF and retinol from Cerave? That one intrigues me, too!

  • Emily

Hooray! I am such a fan of CeraVe. I wish they had left out the Rosemary extract or at least it was lower down the ingredient list than the ceramides, but everything else looks good. This sounds like a worthwhile addition to their product line-up. I try so many different things, but CeraVe is the true workhorse/unsung hero in my daily skin care regimen.

    • iolight

The rosemary extract is a natural antibacterial preservative. It’s how they can have chemical preservatives in very low amounts (e.g. phenoxyethanol) and no parabens (yay!). Rosemary doesn’t, to the best of my knowledge and research, have issues the way lavender or citrus does. Plus it’s an extract, not essential oil, so it’s more gentle. What is your concern? I ask because I have not come across rosemary as being a problem, and while I research skincare ingredients for personal use, I am trained as a chemist and pretty familiar with ingredients…maybe something I haven’t heard yet?

      • Emily Hertler

Thank you for educating me iolight! In my mind, I had all “fragrant plant extracts” lumped together as a category to avoid. You’ve highlighted to me that I was taking a mental shortcut based on a false assumption. So much to keep straight; lavender extract = bad; rosemary oil = bad; rosemary extract = good! Let’s hope I remember. Thanks again!

  • Silvia

I have been using Cera Vé moisteriser under my foundation and can tell a noticeable improvement on my face. Love their products and also recommended by my dermatologist whom gave me a sample I’m hooked! Great products!
Oh! Somehow having trouble posting here, was going to say in those two new St. Ives cleansers I will try both. I do love Eucerin facial wash going through my third bottle the beads are smooth no scratching as the apricots one is and no dryeness, breakouts is real good also.

  • Stacy

    Hi Muse,

have you used this around orbital eye bone and or tops of eyelids?

    • Isabella Muse

no, I stuck to my face. The lid of your eye is very thin and it absorbs product very easily, be careful what products you use in this area! Especially products that area meant for your face, not your eyes. You don’t want something getting into your eye and causing issues down the road.

  • Saiba

Definitely! It’s a great thing for dry skinned gals. I picked it up a while ago and am sure loving it for the winter skin. I’m glad you liked it as well 😀 I was somewhat wary of it too until I turned out to like the consistency because I don’t have oil running down my fingers when applying it. It’s really something.

  • Paula

I really appreciate you including the ingredients in your review- it’s so important!
I’m a compulsive label reader, and I’m thrilled to see this has some great ingredients.

    Thanks again, Muse.
