Matte, Cream, Glossy, or Metallic? What’s Your Lipstick Flavor?

So, what sort of lipstick kind of girl or guy are you. Do you love the traditional, sophisticated old world Hollywood matte look? Or perhaps you like the playfulness of a shiny, glossy lipstick? How about the futuristic look of a metallic? Or the simple yet chic cream lipstick look?

What’s your favorite lipstick flavor/finish?

I’m all about shiny, glossy lips. Blame it on Japan! I’m absolutely spoiled with Japanese lipstick formulas that almost always have a soft formula with a high shine finish. I feel like we have too few shiny lipsticks here in the US! Lancome introduced Shine Lover Lipsticks a while back ago but they didn’t quite capture the brilliance of Japanese Lipstick. I miss T’estimo Lipsticks that had a dreamy, easy glide formula and a gorgeous shiny finish. Le sigh!

But yes, I typically love glossy lipsticks and if the aren’t glossy I’m making them as such by applying some sort of clear lipgloss on top.

I don’t really love mattes although I admit they have improved over the years and some are super creamy and easy to apply and look fabulous. But they still aren’t something I reach for daily. Creams don’t really do it for me, I miss the shine too much! And metallics, well, they tend to look frosty and odd on my lips.

So, glossy, shiny lips it is.

How about you?

Matte? Cream? Glossy? Or metallic? Which is your favorite lipstick finish?

I’m all about staying power so it’s matte for me!! I don’t like anything that has too much slip.

  • Jessie

i’m a matte liquid lipstick girl all the way! I have long hair and I live in OK where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. absolutely hate the hair-in-the-lipgloss thing!

  • Lynn

Creams and satins are my favorite! If I want a more matte look I’ll just blot.

  • Eraser

Creamy & glossy – when you get to be a certain age, this is what makes you look younger. I agree with you about Japanese lip products! Both the formulas and the colors are so flattering.

      • Bela T

Another vote for Eraser here! Yup, I already have dry lips probably from all the years of having chapped lips as a kid, but…I do at times use a matte underneath the moisturizing and when it “locks” the glossy sticks all day.
I am currently impressed with ELF’s moisturizing ones the colors rock (the dark ones) don’t like the “smell” of them but eh..WTH haha…

Hi Muse! Creme for sure! I’ve been really loving the matte liquid lipstick trend, but it’s a little high maintenance. And creme is such an in-between finish…it can be fun, flirty, sophisticated, work-appropriate, understated, etc. Plus it’s comfortable! When I think of the lipstick I could stand to wear everyday, MAC cremesheens immediately come to mind. I will say that glossy lips are very pretty and feminine.

  • Susan

Cream, definitely. Matte makes me look dead and too glossy makes me look like a tweener-wannabe. At age 58, neither is what I’m aiming for! 😉

    • Bela T

Totally agree! I commented above I meant to say cream not gloss haha what was I thinking???? LOL Forgive me just coming off a 10hr shift…

  • moda31

I definitely used to prefer a glossier lip, and thus wore more lipgloss than lipstick; but these days I’m all about a cream or matte finish. Shimmery/shiny shades emphasize lip lines, so they’ve become a no go for me.

I’m entirely about the comfort. Even with the matte lipsticks I buy, which are meant to be long-lasting, I put something on my lips underneath that I’m pretty sure ruins the “stain” aspect of them. I have always had really dry lips, and until recently never really wore lipstick at all. Of course, once you hit a certain age, you can’t get away with that. Basically, I buy just about any formula but really glossy as long as it has the color I want. Do I wish emollient lipsticks were longer-lasting? Of course, but when I see what my daughter goes through to wear matte lipsticks, I am amazed, and not in a good way.

  • Diane

I love a glossy shiny lip. As I have gotten older my lips have become drier and mattes are difficult. I just bought 2 Touch In Sol Metallics and can’t wait to try them. Lip gloss and metallics seem to light up my face.

  • Michiko

    Hello.
I love Matt liquid lipsticks like colourpop or kylie.
In Japan where I live, glossy is still mainstream.
I also like glossy, but I wish that more matt lipsticks products could be released in japan.
Well, to be honest, I like not only Matt but also metallic, glossy and satin, so I’m having fun daily.(^ ^)

  • Lauren

I usually prefer glossy, or at least some shine. My lips are naturally drier and lined, so matte just makes my lips look terrible, and I find that a shinier lipstick makes my lips look larger and smoother.

  • Heather

Creams, stains or satins all the way–mattes aren’t flattering on me (dry lips!), while glossy finishes catch my hair and make me look like a preteen wannabe. 😉

  • Erika

I like matte and satin finishes. But I would like to try out them glossy lipsticks.. what would you recommend?

    • Isabella Muse

nars sheer lipstick, Coffret D’or Premium Stay Rouge, Coffret D’or Rouge Essence, holika holika heartful lipstick, Kose Visee Color Polish Lipstick (just released, limited edition but wonderful), Visee Color Polish Lipstick, etude house dear enamel lip

  • Deborah

I love matte but I’ll wear glossy in the summer as long as it’s semi sheer.

  • Britni

I think they all serve their purpose. Matte during fall and winter, creams, glosses, and lighter formulas in the spring and summer. Matte lips in the summer just feels wrong. There’s nothing better than swiping your favorite rosey gloss in spring and summer.

  • Upsy Daisy

    Enough with mattes geez! 😀

Anyway I personally love the finishes that they tend to call names like luminous satin. Not glossy/high shine, definitely not matte. I also find these formulas don’t feather on me and so I can skip lip liner! (Have you seen the new Kiko Smart Fusion lipsticks? http://www.kikocosmetics.com/it-it/make-up/labbra/rossetti/Smart-Fusion-Lipstick/p-KM00201026) this has that kind of finish.

Also Rouge Dior comes to mind, I absolutely LOVE Rose Harpers.

    • Isabella Muse

amen, couldn’t agree more 😀 haven’t tried these yet! I do so love kiko lipsticks 😀

      • Upsydaisy

They are quite nice! As a matter of fact near perfection, especially for that price tag! And the formula does sport some nice ingredients like argan oil to name one.

Just launched here recently, so if you do not have them yet, they’re on the way!

While I love my Rose Harpers I cannot afford to replace it just any time, so yeah…. KIKO rocks! 😉 😀

  • Ricci Bell

I know this sounds crazy but Muse, I never worn colored lipstick before ever and I am 4 , but I prefer matte looks wise

  • Molly

As a middle aged gal, I only use a shinier/glossier lipstick…and I ALWAYS apply lip gloss (usually MAC) over any lipstick. My absolute FAVORITE lipstick is Edward Bess Ultra Slick…the name says it all, right? His colors and formulation are perfection, in my humble opinion. Rose Demure, Demi Buff, Pure Impuse are my everyday go-to’s❤️
I have tried mattes and everything in between….talk about aging 5-10 years in one swipe!!! No thanks:(
I do like the look (sometimes) on younger ladies.

  • bebe

I’ve been using Maybelline’s Baby Lips exclusively for the last three years. They’re sheer, with just a hint of color, and they look fabulous on me..just right for those of us who the actress Britt Ekland refers to as “ladies of a certain age”. 🙂

    • Lisa

I’ll have to give those Maybelline Baby Lips a try as I’m in the group that Britt Ekland mentions! 🙂

  • Lauren

I guess I’m in the minority but I do prefer a bit of shimmer or metallic! It gives my lips some dimension, mattes always just look flat on me.

  • genevieve

I much prefer creams and glossy too. I really can’t wear mattes – far too drying on my lips and lip glosses are out because I find them too sticky and ultimately dehydrating as well.

  • Chris M

I love a matte lip but not on me. I use gloss(I like as well as matte) because of the lip lines around my mouth-this is much kinder to me, much softer lips with gloss.

  • Zovesta

I like matte, glossy, and creme, but I’ll admit that creme is my favourite! Just depends on the look you want. Sometimes you want to look youthful and kissable so you wear gloss, other times you want to look dead serious and polished in matte… most days, I think creme looks best. 😀
