Do You Wash Your Face in the Shower?

I’m the queen of multitasking. If I can get several things done at once I’m a happy camper. My professional, personal, and blog life is very, very, very busy. Most days, I feel like I don’t have time to breath because I’m juggling several different tasks at once. It’s the New York way.

I love a good multitasking beauty product for sure. If I can get several different tasks done at one time with some newfangled skincare product that hydrates me from head to toe I’m all in.

And the shower? People, the shower was made for multitasking. I do just about everything I humanly can in the shower! It’s not just for getting clean. I wash my hair, I wash my face, I listen to the news, I mask in there, I shave, I hydrate, etc….etc…yeah, showers were made for multitasking.

I spend a good deal of time in the evening cleansing and taking care of skin but in the morning I typically wash my face in the shower. I also tend to exfoliate and occasionally I’ll even wear cream mask while in the shower. It’s just easier to get all this done in the shower when you’re rushing around in the AM. Some people wait to get out of the shower to wash their face but I just do it while I’m in there. And by the way, do you ever notice that your face is never tight or dry after cleansing or exfoliating in the shower? I swear when I cleanse at the sink I have to rush to hydrate because I’m left feeling so tight. When I do it in the shower I end up having a rather fresh faced glow and no tightness.

So, yeah, I do wash my face in the shower!

Do you?

Absolutely! I’m all about the multitasking. And here’s an interesting tip: allowing the water to beat down on your closed eyelids for a little while helps keep the oil glands around your eyes clear of potential plugs which in turns helps your eyes stay hydrated. Who knew? I sure didn’t until my eye doctor told me to start doing it. I started wearing a new form of hybrid contacts; the center of the lens is semi rigid and the skirt is soft. My doctor told me to do this because I live in the desert and it would help keep my eyes properly hydrated and clear of potential debris and styes. So far it’s working.

Hey Deb, not on topic of the post, but what brand of contacts are you wearing? I have issues with contact lenses drying up and sticking to my eye (terrifying) so I’ve been avoiding wearing them again, which sucks. I’d love to know what you’re using so I can look into them to see if it would be good for my drier eyes! 🙂

        Hi Kimmyyy,
They’re called Duette. I think they’ve only been around for a couple of years now. I’m really liking them. I don’t have dry eyes per se but I do live in the desert and that makes wearing contacts a little more of a challenge. Here’s a link to their website so you can see if you have a provider in your area. Good luck!

Nope! I only wash my face once a day, though, and I do that at night. Then I shower in the morning and just rinse my face with water. That’s actually what my dermatologist recommended – remove makeup and cleanse at night with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser, apply acne medications (tretinoin gel and clindamycin gel), then apply moisturizer. Then splash with water in the morning to remove any oil that accumulated overnight. She said it’s unnecessary to cleanse more than once a day and can actually be too harsh and drying for a lot of people. I have to agree because I’ve had really good success with this routine.

  • Kimmwc03

Nope, never. I take showers at night (since I don’t like to go to bed feeling dirty) so that is probably why.

  • Maritza

Yup me mostly at night aftet a bit of a work out. I figure the water is already running might as well kill 2 birds with one stone 😉

I went in to Sephora this weekend to get a sample of a face wash and the employee told me to NEVER wash my face in the shower, which I do by the way. She said the hot water opens the pores too much and is bad for the face. And she said never to exfoliate too much and when you do exfoliate to use a light touch because it can leave micro-tears in the skin. Not sure really what is best but I hate washing my face at the skin, I make too much of a mess all around and down my arms.

I typically take a shower with lukewarm water to not dry my skin out. So, I think I might be ok. She’s right with exfoliating, def do it gently and don’t do it often. I do it once a week at most as it does more harm than good for me as it dries my skin out.

My shower water takes a while to warm up so I use the cool water to wash my face. But if I am washing hair, I wait til after I am done with doing the cool rinse on my hair before I wash face (face cleanser washes away hair product residue) residue off).

  • Denise

I always wash my face in the shower, using my Clarisonic and Philosphy’s Purity Made Simple cleanser. I don’t take hot showers, either.

  • Jen R

Yep – every morning in the shower I use a face scrub while my conditioner is soaking in, and then end the shower using a medicated wash on my face, chest, and back. Been doing it for as long as I can remember and never really thought about it!

  • yelena

i do too on hair wash days 🙂
I’ll also exfoliate, and i agree, best clean feeling ever.

  • Christina Tran

Yes, I love washing my face in the shower. I’ve never used a mask, though, but I have put on a mask right before showering. I love that after I get out of the shower, my face is plum, hydrated, and so bright! I’d like to capture that effect in a bottle. LOL!

  • momo

Homie I only wash my face in the shower unless there’s a serious makeup removal emergency. I take showers at night after I work out and I can make a splashy mess and rinse off masks and whatever face crap I’m experimenting with and not have to worry about getting my counter messy. In the morning I just wipe up with a toner before doing my makeup.
I know people who brush their teeth in the shower too but while I am lazy af that is a bridge too far. 😛

    • Isabella Muse

I was going to confess that in a later post, totally wash my teeth in the shower. It’s a dude moment when I do but sorry not sorry lol!

      • momo

LOL! You’re right it’s 100% dudes I’ve known who do it and i’m like yo why is there toothpaste in the shower isn’t that hard to clean? But you know I just stand there and enjoy the hot water for a few minutes on a cold day so at least y’all are getting something done while you’re soakin it up. 😛

        • Isabella Muse

haha! Oh well….! Seriously though it’s such a time saver! I’m all about saving time!

    • Roxi

I brush my teeth in the shower. What’s bad about using the 2 minutes for conditioner to soak in as well as solving another chore in the morning, lol. I always make a mess with my sonic toothbrush anyway so in the shower is the most perfect.

  • Kimmyyy

I wash my face in the shower and always have. My mother does as well. I assumed everyone did that! I don’t put masks on while in there because I always get water all over my face, so it would just get wasted, but I do anything else I can. I have super oily/combo skin that tends to get clogged pores and find that washing my face in the shower helps get rid of some of that, better than when I wash at the sink. I assume it has something to do with the constant warm water opening the pores up and really letting me clean them out. I just make sure I use a really moisturizing face wash and I’ve never had any issues! I also wait until the end of the shower so I can tone and moisturize relatively soon afterwards. The only time I notice any negative reaction from washing my face in the shower is when I have the water super hot (I love, love, love super hot showers, despite how it dries skin out). I also do cleanse my face twice a day (morning and night) because I just feel gross if I don’t. I’m sure you’ve heard of these (I may have even read a post on here about them), but I need to look into one of those masks that you just like splash on your face while showering (splash mask?) – that sounds like it’s doable for me, haha.

  • Upsydaisy

I do too. And I love hot showers. And I love to exfoliate and also use a sponge thing to remove face wash…

So that’s that 😀 not sure If micro tears worry me too much. Should they?

I find this way my skin stays clear and smooth… 😮

  • Sarah

Always shower in the morning after working out, and I always wash my face in the shower. I don’t feel clean if I don’t wash from head to toe. I of course, wash my face after work to get the make up and grime off.

  • Zovesta

Same, Muse! Brush my teeth, exfoliate, shave, wash my face, clean my nails, scrub the calluses on my feet off… =P The shower provides all!!

    • Isabella Muse

haha I’m so glad I’m not the only that does all this in the shower 😀

  • TropicalChrome

Yes. We even keep a bar of milk soap in the shower specifically for face washing. And I still use a Gentle Buf Puf every day. Yes, I know, cleansers, stripping, yadda, yadda, but milk soap has been the best for my oily skin. We all have such different chemistries that we all have to figure out what works for us.

  • Stephanie

I wash my face in the shower and brush my teeth there too lol. I’m not afraid to admit that. 🙂 I like washing my face in the shower more than doing it at the sink because I feel like I’m able to properly wash away the product better, if that makes sense.

    • Isabella Muse

I completely agree and that makes total sense! Sometimes at the sink I make a big old mess trying to remove cleanser. It’s like water gets everywhere 😀

Not sure if anyone has already written this, I too have a busy life and couldn’t read all the wonderful comments. But I do wash my face in the shower. I just want to have every one keep in mind that if it is hair washing night, which is for me about 2-3 times a week, be sure to wash your hair first, then your face. Whatever oil and grime you’re washing out of your hair will run down on that pretty little face of yours!! So just wanted to share my thoughts!! Great post Muse!!

Not only do I wash and exfoliate in the shower, I brush my teeth in the shower too! It’s so much simpler to do it in one fell swoop, especially late at night when you don’t have the energy to wet your face again and blah blah blah. Totally agree with you, multitasking is life.

  • Iris

I definitely do. I take a shower and wash my facial makeup off at night at the same time.

  • Brandy

I have to wash my face in the shower after I wash my hair or my face will break out. I’ve tried changing my hair products, but it doesn’t help. I’m almost 29, and I’m starting to develop some adult acne even though I never had it as a teen or early 20s.
