Yay or Nay: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

I remember when Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara launched with it’s edgy name and promise of ink black lashes that are fuller, longer, and sexier. I love Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes and I consider it my holy grail mascara but I have to admit I’m still searching for that one mascara that will really rock my world. I haven’t quite found it yet.

I noticed that Too Faced is starting to repromote Better Than Sex on Instagram. I swear, they spend so much time promoting this mascara it boggles my mind. Almost every season they trying to rev up interest in it.

Needless to say when it first released I felt positive Too Better Than Sex Mascara would be incredible.

It’s a nay for me. It’s way over marketed in my opinion and the results are mediocre. The formula is a bit messy to work with and clumps my lashes up. Yak!

What was your experience like with Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara?

I know it has a crumb load of fans but I’m simply not one so it’s a nay for me.

How about you?

Yay or nay?

Do share!

likewise. I keep trying to see what I am missing but nope, doesn’t quite work out!

      • Diana

I thought I would love it but I end up looking like a panda bear. I like tarte gifted mascara and Neutrogena healthy volume

  • Dusty

Love, love, love the way that it looks when I put it on my lashes! BUT, no matter what I tried…primer under, powder under..it would smear under my eyes within an hour. So yay, but nay.

    • MN Diamond Girl

I had the same experience…..looked great right after application, but a few hours later, I had little black specks and smudges under my lower lashes. I am currently a fan of the Tarte Maneater mascara.

  • Susan

Big NAY from me. It clumps, the brush is too big, and it flakes off worse than any other mascara I’ve used. I wish TF would quit pushing it so hard.

Btw, current fave mascara is Bare Minerals Lash Domination since they came out with the choice to buy it with a smaller brush. Honestly, some mascaras’ brushes are so huge I can practically do both eyes at once. Awkward!!

    • Isabella Muse

I feel bad saying it but every time I see them pushing it I get annoyed lol!

  • Kimmwc03

I really like this mascara. It’s one of my favorites. I’ve avoided the waterproof version like the plague; though, since I’ve heard that one is bad.

  • Ruth

Nay! I didn’t like the wand, the mascara crumbled on me and made me look like a trash panda! Hype didn’t live up to reality. I’ve been enjoying boots No7 mascara on the red sparkley tube. It doesn’t migrate, flake off, and my lashes are long and fluttery. Impressed!

    • lara / the glossarie.

trash panda might be the best descriptor i’ve heard ever – and i fully agree!!

  • Jona

It was a nay for me too… I tried a couple of times but couldn’t make it work.

  • Emily

I’ve had a sample tube of it sitting in my collection since forever. I’ve heard it can be messy, so I have always thought I’ll try it when I am not in a rush. But, I am always in a rush! I need a mascara that I know the brush is manageable and is not overly wet. I know there are mega fans out there, but I still haven’t formed an opinion because I never want to risk making a mess all over my face, which I’ve read can happen. Maybe this weekend.

  • Christina D.

As you already know, my dear Sista, it’s a NAY for me, too. I don’t get it at all. It’s kind of like the Maybelline craptastic mascara in the pink tube that gets all kinds of raves — I hate that even more than the TF mascara.

  • yelena

ehhh didn’t do much for me. my sister loves it tho, anytime i get a sample or gwp, i save it for her. the mascara that i have been loving lately is the essence princess volume mascara. apart from the packaging being cute and name princess hey!, i find that this mascara gives me length and volume. i love it. i have been recommending this to all my friends.!

  • Lauren

Hot mess. Wet, gloopy, never wanted to dry but always managed to flake and smear two hours into wearing it. Hard pass, glad I just had a sample.

  • Andrea

Nay for me. I liked the look but it flaked off and smudged within an hour.

I’ll take Maybelline The Rocket waterproof version any day for a similar look at a much lower price that stays on your eyes.

  • Tammy

That is hands down the absolute worst mascara I have ever used in my entire life.

  • A

I really don’t like it. First off, it’s a bit too light for my tastes. Also, I see people using it on YouTube and it looks great on them, but on me it flakes and smears. I never have those problems with other mascaras. I’m thankful I got mine as a sample and that I didn’t actually pay for it!

  • Melissa

I’m on the fence with the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. I’ve tried several tubes of it. I’ve loved it, liked it and hated it. I don’t know if it is a formula variation or shelf life thing, but the tubes are hit or miss. I’ve had amazing results and then there have been tubes that caused crumbling and burning. The deluxe sample sizes are especially underwhelming. I love the Lancôme Hypnose, but it is the dickens to remove and I usually loose lashes even when using my holy grail Mary Kay eye makeup remover . Right now I’m using the MAC Upward Lash mascara and really like it.

  • Sjofna

Wow, it gets so many great reviews I’m surprised to see how many people here don’t actually like it. I always thought it just didn’t work well with my eye cream because it smudges and flakes. Samples of it come with sooo many GWP’s too; if I actually liked it I’d never have to buy mascara again.

  • ame

YAY for the Waterproof one. Love that. Stays on all day, practically indelible. Doesn’t transfer, doesn’t run, love it. But the regular sucks serious ass. Doesn’t stay on the entire lash for more than a couple hours, doesn’t hold a curl bec it’s too wet, transfers, flakes HORRIBLY.

  • Christina Tran

Nay for me. It just doesn’t give me any incredible volume, and it flakes and smears too easily.

  • Sammy

That mascara is HORRIBLE! My mind was boggled after the girls at Ulta highly recommended it and all the positive reviews this mascara receives. It failed on so many different levels for me…It pulled out the curl of the my lashes, it did not lengthen or thicken my lashes, it smudged horribly underneath my eyes AND it flaked – 1st for me on both counts there. Yuck yuck and yuck.

  • Carol G

It’s a yay for me. I like Tarte Lights Camera Lashes as well. I have major issues with my lashes right now I guess due to getting older. It seems like over night they just disappeared so between these two mascaras, I find they are the best for my situation. Someone mentioned the Maneater mascara which I have not tried but am curious about. Oh and about the raccoon eyes problem, I just use Ulta’s raincoat waterproof topcoat over it (and all my mascaras) and I don’t have a problem.

  • sleepybird

I still prefer Urban Decay Perversion. Just wishing they would make it in waterproof for when my allergies get going.

  • Marisa

I agree! This is a nay for me. The brush is too big, it clumps, and it smudges through out the day. I like Tarte’s Gifted and Mally’s mascara. I actually combine both or use Gifted and It Cosmetics Superhero. Layering of mascara works better for me. However, Superhero makes my eyes itch everyonce in a while so I don’t use often. I have so many of the mini Better than Sex at home from all the sets I have bought. Wish they would put something else in the sets!!!

  • Sarah

I have yet to find a mid range to high end range mascara that impresses me. This one comes close but I don’t think the price justify’s the results. It just does not perform that much better than my $8 drugstore mascara.

  • Megan

I love the weight of the wand, I love how inky the mascara goes on, but within a couple of hours, I get those dreaded black flecks.

    My all-time favorite mascaras are:
    1. CG Supersizer – holy moly this stuff holds the curl on my lashes for 12+hours! No raccoon eyes, and beautiful full lashes! This is hands down my HG.
    2. Neutrogena Lash Architect, for days I don’t want that full look
    3. Maybelline Full ‘n Soft – Is it still out there? I haven’t used it in awhile but I know I went through tubes and tubes of the stuff.

    • Megan

I messed up – no such thing as Neutrogena Lash Architect! I was thinking of Maybelline Lash Discovery!

  • Zovesta

Yay for me – doesn’t smudge, makes my lashes thick and long, and I can actually layer it on my lashes without a mess. Goes to show that there can’t be any single HG mascara – everyone’s eyelashes are different.

  • Michelle

I love it! It works great for me with my already long lashes! I can see the flaw in it being clumpy because I do have that problem sometimes . One major mascara that doesnt seem to agree with me though is ‘Benefit Theyre Real!’. I’m not sure if it’s just the formula or me but the mascara is always very clumpy and makes my eyelashes hard .

  • Lisa S.

Yay for me! It’s one of only a very small handfull of mascaras that make my sparse lashes look like anything. For years I used drug store mascara and I always had flakes and smudging, plus my lashes still looked skimpy.
I used MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash for awhile, it was alright. I also used Marc Jacobs
O!Mega mascara and I do like it quite a bit. Oooo, I do have to say that the only drugstore mascara I use is Maybelline Full and Soft Waterproof when I go on vacay and need something that can hold a curl and stand up to salt water and chlorine

  • Daisy

Nay. Unfortunately, it smudges so bad. I look like a raccoon by the end of the day.

  • Claudia

I have the waterproof one. I am on the fence because sometimes it clumps but doesn’t flake or run. It holds the curl and thickens but it also feels heavy and takes a bit to dry and has that huge brush. I LOVE YSL’s Volume Effet Faux Cils(waterproof). That stuff is amazing! I wait for the semiannual Nordstrom mascara sale because that is the cheapest I can find it anywhere. I just want a mascara that gives me longer looking lashes. I don’t have a problem with them being sparse so for drugstore I like Maybelline Push-up Angel. But I am always game for trying a new mascara as long as it is waterproof.

  • mushroomjoey

The brush is way too big for my tiny lashes. I don’t usually have problem with mascara smearing on my face but this. I don’t like anything about it besides the name and the pink tube. NAY.

  • Ru

I personally favour, Stila’s mascara from the Modern Goddess collection. Usually get compliments using that one 🙂

  • Ivanna

I threw it right in the trash after two uses. It would have been one use, but the hype confused my first reaction to seeing the mascara dingleberries and flakes. Took a second confirming try to make my blood boil. It’s gross. I like precision in my mascara. I use a magnifying mirror. When a mascara adds giant dingleberry clumps, and then smudges, flakes, and uncurls my lashes, I lash out!

My HG combo is to prime my lashes with the waterproof Maybelline Lash Discovery, and then to go in with a thickening L’oreal Voluminous False Fiber tube.

  • Sarah L

I give this mascara a yay. My lashes aren’t too short but this mascara gives me extra length and that va va voom volume so I look more awake. It does make my lashes look wonderful and even my boyfriend agrees. I wear the regular version everyday and after 12 or so hours it looks mostly fine on me after a long day. This regular mascara survives crying.

There are some flaws though in BTS. I do not put the regular version on my lower lashes because it does kind melt off in an hour or two (out of curiosity I tried although I generally don’t like wearing mascara on my lower lashes). This mascara kinda takes forever to dry so I just wear 1 coat usually although I heard 2-3 makes it look dramatic. For me even the regular mascara is hard to take off – which great but really annoys me sometimes. I’ve tried UD perversion and it was so easy to take off. My first BTS was a deluxe sample and it dried out after 1 month of daily use (I even added contact solution to freshen it up). My full sized is still going strong but it’s only been <1 month. I've heard bad reviews about the waterproof so I'm anxious to use my waterproof deluxe sample.

Currently BTS is my favorite mascara but I want to try benefit's roller lashes when I finish my other full sized bottle of better than sex and the deluxe sample of the waterproof BTS. My boyfriend got me this full size regular and deluxe size waterproof set from ULTA (it was the same price as a full sized BTS) and then I got this cute set from too faced that came with another full sized BTS… So I have BTS to last me at least a year. All in all I still warrant this mascara a YAY. Also random side note – how long are deluxe samples supposed to last ?

  • beth

HATE everything about it! Makes a huge mess and doesn’t do anything for my lashes.

  • Lesley A.

As someone who uses all colors of mascara except black, I find it annoying that so many brands have just black, so I avoid all of those, whether they are Too Faced’s, Benefit’s, etc etc. If they don’t have the consideration to offer at least brown, and maybe some nice blue or purple while they’re at it, then they don’t deserve my purchase.

The mascaras that for me do the job best are Maybelline Colossal Volum’Express, various versions of Dior mascaras, and L’Oreal Voluminous.

  • Kathleen

I like the product but don’t think I’d buy it (I keep getting samples). I’m not a fan of the hype though. As far as I’m concerned, if a product is that good it speaks for itself.

  • Ally

I like what it does for my lashes BUT it flakes too much! I have black speckles under my eyes by the time I get home from work – it’s embarrassing!

  • Onyx

I wanted to love this mascara, but at the end of an 8 hour day it left transfer smudges on the upper portion of my eyelid. And it’s done that every time I’ve worn it more than a couple of hours.
I’ll keep looking for my ‘holy grail’.

  • Sharon Starr

Nay, can’t even stand it and would certainly question anything that claims to be better than SEX, please. I am in love with Perversion mascara from UD and Lorac Pro with the fiber. Both of them are great however the Lorac does have a small learning curve as does sex. So glad you feel the same about BTS and I wondered myself why that sh&$ keeps resurfacing. The brush is huge and awkward and you can count on whorey trash eyes but then maybe that’s what the hype is!!! Perhaps we are missing the point here! Thanks Muse for all your hard work and the great research as always. I really appreciate your opinion on all things beauty.

    • Isabella Muse

lol Sharon! I’m such a teenage boy! I laughed, “and would certainly question anything that claims to be better than SEX, please.” haha…! OMG They pimp and repromote it every season and it drives me up a wall haha..please something new! aw thanks girl xoxoxo!

  • Diana

Nay for me, same as everyone else, goopy and clumpy, doesn’t do any of the stuff it claims to do. I just don’t understand it, most of these comments are a “nay” so how is this stuff staying on the market, maybe TF is claiming its the best thing since they give this crap away as a freebie all the time because there can’t be that many people buying it!!!! The best mascara for me is Maybelline Lash Stiletto, tried it based on your recommendation, nothing makes my lashes long, longer, longest like this stuff, its gold I tell you! LOL!

  • kjh

Me, not so much. Major concealer= instant coati…thinking that Central American raccoon cousins must have worse under eye smears. When I got another sample, I gave it to my nearly 80 y.o. Friend, who was a churchy, churchy lady….for the shock value of the name. She liked it, and when she put on her glasses to read the name, was not offended. I misjudged thinking I could get a big, churchy overreaction. No, she started to cry, and said how much she missed her husband and their intimacy. She has been gone a while, but I still associate bts with her. Hope she wore it forever, and I’m still pissed her sons denied her a church funeral. Glad I don’t have to explain this season’s Nars pencil names to her!

  • Laine

I love it…but only when it’s paired with something like benefit roller lash. I also never use it on my lower lashes. I find I don’t like freshly opened tubes either.

  • Nia

I love this mascara. It is by far my favorite. I have not found another mascara to make my eyelashes so full and defined. If there is something better (in the same price range) please share!!

  • Pickles Mom

I kept getting free samples of it so I tried it. A nay for me. Based on reviews I thought it was going to be awesome. Not so much. It doesn’t smear or flake because it really doesn’t do anything for me. I have long lashes and it doesn’t even look like I’m wearing mascara when I use it. Urban Decay Perversion is 100 times better.

  • Penny

It’s a nay for me…I tried both versions since I usually have better luck with waterproof versions, but I didn’t like that one either. My holy grail mascara that never lets me down is Mally’s Get The Last Lash mascara. Keeps my lashes curled all day and doesn’t flake or smudge. Don’t know why I keep trying other mascaras…I just keep coming back to Mally! 🙂

  • Dora

Nope. Was so excited to try it — had a sample tube from an Ulta gift (I think) and it was beyond terrible for me. Super super flaky. I guess I could try the waterproof but there are way too many good mascaras out there to bother. I’m pretty into drugstore mascaras right now: Lash Blast, L’Oreal Butterfly, Maybelline Lash Sensational. Plus, I do not mind edgy or racy names but clearly they were just . . . trying too hard with this one. Honestly, it’s like a bunch of ad people were sitting in a meeting and trying to come up with something provocative and just ran out of ideas.
