Do You Display Your Perfume Collection or Keep Them Boxed?

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

I have quite a large fragrance collection that I absolutely love and cherish. I’m a huge lover of fragrance of any kind be it high-end, niche, or budget-friendly Etsy picks. To me it’s the perfect and ultimate compliment to my personality.

I do fail miserably at displaying my collection though.

I keep boxes for everything. It’s a horrible, nasty habit and probably makes me a hoarder of sorts. But I keep a lot of my makeup in the original packaging or box. I do the same with my perfumes. I keep all my fragrances in their original boxes. I think it keeps them fresher longer as they aren’t exposed to sunlight from windows and such.

Typically I take about 10 or 12 bottles out of their boxes which I know I’ll be using that month and set them up on a cake pedestal on top of my vanity. When I’m done with them I rotate and put new ones out. Typically I pair up seasonal scents to display! It’s kind of a nice addition to my vanity and it makes me happy seeing all the pretty bottles paired up together.

But as soon as I’m done with them I box them back up.

How about you?

Do you display your perfume collection and ditch the boxes?

Or do you keep your fragrances in the box?

Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Interesting. I debox, but they are in a protected closet, on a shelf, sorted by family/season. In displaying them, would impress no one but myself, and don’t impress myself easily! None of the bottles are display worthy, anyway, except maybe Niki de Saint Phalle. Colorful snakes? Yeah, me.

I used to display bottles, but I think some of them were compromised by the exposure (either scent changed/contaminants/evaporation/degradation by light) so I no longer display them.

That’s when I keep mine boxed. Typically I display a few that I know I’ll be using but after a week or two I rotate and put them back into the box!

i keep my “nice stuff” (vera wang, gucci, channel, etc) on my vanity permanently because i don’t have enough to rotate out and i like the way they look in pretty glass bottles. then i have a few B&BW body sprays i roatate out depending on season and keep them on the opposite side of my vanity near my lotions. i only display two sprays, normally one regular and one glitter, and two choices of lotion to prevent clutter. the rest are in drawers in my closet, accessible but out of mind.

I used to keep boxes but it took up so much space and looked cluttered so I trash most of them after I’ve tried a product a couple times. I like to display the pretty bottles in my bedroom.

I used to display what little perfume I had, until my mom told me the light would destroy them. Now they sit in my drawer where no one can see them, so I often forget about them.

likewise! I box it all up too and typically some of my more $$ ones I put in the closet to avoid them spoiling!

I keep all of mine unboxed in a cabinet so they’re not exposed to light & heat. The only ones I have out are the 4-5 in my current rotation. & that’s just for convenience sake. I recently sold about 25 bottles in consignment since they weren’t really getting used & I didn’t want them to go bad. Plus the extra $ was a nice bonus. 🙂

Ones I have are in a medicine cabinet shelf, unboxed. One in use is on my vanity. When the one on vanity is used up, I chose one from the medicine cabinet. I keep 2 or 3 boxed in vanity drawer.

For me boxes equal trash and clutter so I recycled all mine. I currently have 15+ bottles sitting on the vanity. The hub said I have too many and I don’t wear them. I promptly responded “not around you because you complain about the smells. ” He doesn’t like fragrances–any but I am the one with allergies. I can’t wear lavender, patchouli, cardamom, coriander, cumin, ambrette seed… you know the usual suspects to make something gourmand-like.

My bottles sit on my dresser. I have only 6-7 I rotate through. Even if I stored them away from the light, the temperature in my whole house fluctuates and gets extremely hot/cold in the summer and winter. I feel like a lot of my bottles are being used up since I’m guilty of spraying a lot. I sometimes carry my perfume in my purse since they’re all pretty compact in design. If I’m really feeling the scent, sometimes I mist it onto my bed or pjs. Haha does anyone do this or I’m just weird?

    • Isabella Muse

omg you are me both about your hose getting hot/cold in the summer/winter. I’m away a lot so my Nest goes into eco when I’m not around which means be it Summer/Winter it tries to save me money by lowering the heat or turning off the AC which means the temps are all over the place at times. I’m always concerned about my makeup/perfume because of this! I DO that ;-D I mist my undie drawer lol! Is that weird?!

      • Yen

I’m always scared of my lipsticks melting in the heat. They get really sweaty looking, but none have melted yet.

I forgot I had a bottle of perfume that’s over 4 years old and it still smells the same even after the temperature abuse haha. No way, misting undies is not weird 😉 Scented fabric softener makes clothes smell nice. Perfume just makes it smell more amazing.

Boxed. I keep the newer ones on a shelf in my closet because I know I have a while before they start to turn. All the rest, and it’s A LOT I keep mostly still boxed in one of the produce drawers in the fridge. A nice old lady once gave me that tip a long time ago when I was shopping in the Fragrance Dept. It keeps them fresher longer. When I really get hard up for space in the fridge drawer I force myself to get rid of a few boxes to create more room, but it’s a struggle! Yes I do know I have a problem. 😛

    • Isabella Muse

I’d love to be able to do that but sadly my collection is WAY to vast 😀 I do have a mini fridge for my skincare but can’t keep all my fragrances in there! Boo!

Mm, okay, confession time: 2,535 bottles and counting (not including duplicates, triplicates, hand-made, etc.). It’s my life, and I’d say 90% are in their boxes (hundreds and hundreds still with cellophane) unless I bought a tester or the like. I like the term “high class hoarder”, since it makes me feel better about myself. I have them in dresser drawers, bookshelves stacked, and my husband finally made me a perfume room dedicated to storing and using them. You are definitely not alone, and that’s why I love you. We share the same crazy passions for shower gels, fragrance, candles, tarts, etc.! Do you keep a virtual shelf on Fragrantica? I’ve often wondered if you had a profile so I could secretly spy on your collection, but I know you have ZERO free time to probably do that….okay, not sure if I feel better exposing myself or worse! Xoxo, Julie

    • Isabella Muse

omfg you beat me. I have a lot but I don’t have that many! I need to catch up to you lol! Julie I knew were soulmates! 😀 Hahahahaahahahahaha! Sadly, I don’t. I’m a frequent stalker of the site and the forums but I don’t have time to maintain a profile or participate sadly! I should start one, it would help me keep my collection in order!

  • Julie

I do display mine but I only buy one or two new fragrances per year (in other words, bottles I’ve never had before) I do still replenish any that I’ve run out of that I LOVE 🙂 If you have the space to keep your boxes AND empty bottles, they do become collectible down the L.O.N.G. road.
