Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick ($34) is a new slim-line refillable lipstick that launched in 30 shades for Fall 2017 late last month. I have to admit I love slim lipsticks. They just bring back the 80’s for me! I decided to indulge in one color as they sounded quite intriguing not to mention the refillable option seemed mighty interesting as well.
Let’s take a look!
Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick is likely one of the most expensive lipstick purchases I’ve ever made. I know what you’re thinking, “But Muse, you’ve purchased Tom Ford Lipsticks and Guerlain ones too! Those are equally expensive!” Yes, they are, but they also contain a lot more product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These are 0.03 oz in size! That’s a very little amount of lipstick for quite a big price tag. You could argue that you’re only spend $34 during the initial purchase as after that refills are $22 each but again, for 0.03 oz of product that’s a good deal of money. I can honestly say that after using the shade I purchase for one week, daily, with application in the morning only, that I am now almost half way done with the product. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate Hourglass is a higher-end brand, I also understand the packaging is slim, but I’m sure they could have squeeze a little more product in their at this price. Below I swiveled up the entire lipstick below to give you an idea of how much lipstick is in the barrel.
Not that my pricing rant is aside let’s review these a little more detail.
As with all Hourglass Cosmetics these come housed in elegant packaging which obviously shows where your money is good. The slim-line barrel tapers off to a thin point which actually gives the lipstick the look of an eyeliner. If you didn’t know better and saw this laying on someone’s vanity you’d probably think it was an eyeliner. The gold packaging is simple yet quite beautiful. The barrel has some weight to it as well giving it a heavy feel. To swap out the shade it’s fairly simply as a quick, hard tug on the barrel will release the upper portion of the tube and release the lipstick allowing you to snap in another color. Someone recently asked me if the refills swivel up and down without the barrel and they do indeed. Which means if you want to cheapen things up and just buy a refill you can although, it obviously isn’t as pretty as the gold barrel. In some ways, the barrel is an accessory of sorts as you can interchange shades and use the same elegant barrel to carry them in. It’s also incredibly travel-friendly and small enough to tuck into your pocket or an evening clutch. I also liked the way they printed the names of the shade on the inner tube. When you’re swapping shades in and out this could prove handy to remind yourself which shade is inside the currently loaded in the barrel.
The formula is unfortunately, for the price, not something I’d be inclined to rave about. The texture is lightly creamy with a satin finish that seemed to accentuate my natural lip lines slightly. It’s pigmented on a single stroke, thank god considering the size right, and the wear time was excellent at five hours without fading or migrating.
I was less than thrilled with the application and the look of it on my lips. It didn’t have as smooth an application as one would expect from such a costly lipstick. It tugged every so slightly and the finish looked less than smooth. It did have a slight perfume-y rose fragrance and flavor that disappeared fairly fast.
I’m a bit of a nitpick I suppose but Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick is a formula I expected a lot more from. I wouldn’t recommend a purchase sadly. If you’re going to indulge in a lipstick that’s more than $30 I think the application and finish should be perfect and this just didn’t quite get there for me.
