Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition Review

I yet again gave into the temptation to purchase the Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition. If you missed my original post about the new All-Star Edition Play Box here’s a brief recap. This is extension to the Play by Sephora Subscription Service that’s available as a one time purchase. Originally Sephora launches the Iconic Edition Box a few short months ago but as a “Rouge Only” purchase. They obviously heard the outcries from non-Rouge members who also wanted in on purchasing the one time box because although, available to Rouge Members first, within a day it was available to everyone else.

The box is $20 and contains six tarot cards, a makeup pouch, and six deluxe size samples from high-end brands like Tom Ford, Dior, and others as well as 50 beauty bonus points that are added to your Sephora account after purchase.

I wasn’t impressed with the first box they did but I purchased the second one because I know many of you were curious about the contents and my thoughts on the box.

So, here’s the deets.

Weirdly, this disappeared from the Sephora site but if you Google it comes up and shows a review rating of 3.2 stars. I’d give it maybe 2 stars, it’s just not really worth the $20 as a lot of the items inside can be easily obtained at a higher-end counter as a sample with purchase or if you’re a good enough customer you can likely get your regular makeup artist or sales rep to just hand over the sample or even a nice rep who’ll kindly give you one.

This is a box I’d recommend for people who don’t typically splurge on higher-end makeup due to lack of funds or who just aren’t interested in spending big $$$ on higher-end makeup purchases. It’ll give you access to products you’ve never considered trying before or have wanted to but didn’t want to spend the money on.

It isn’t a box for those who are already higher-end makeup junkies as most of what is inside you’ve likely already tried or already own. I’d consider this box a win if the contents contained items I never tried before. For example, they include a generous sample of Flowerbomb perfume. At this point, I think everyone on the planet has tried it and either hated it, loved it, or found themselves in purgatory over it. A better option would to include the new Chanel Gabrielle. I’d totally think the twenty bucks was worth it if they took the initiative to include newly launched beauty like this!

Another boring product in the box is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (0.14 oz). If you subscribe to Ipsy, Birchbox, etc…you likely have half a dozen of these laying around. It’s not a bad product by any means, just a product that’s appears in a lot of beauty subscription boxes.

Other items include: Amore Pacific Moisture Bond Creme, Dior Mascara Professional Volume, SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, and Tom Ford Indian Rose Lip Colour. Again, all items I tried out before but still exciting picks for those who never experienced some of these higher-end makeup items.

One of the things I wasn’t into in the box was the addition of several “tarot cards” with descriptions of the items as well as “fortunes” that give you a “look” at your past, present, and future. It seemed childish and a waste of paper nor fitting with the higher-end items in the box.

Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition was a bust for me but I can see it as being interesting to those who never tried higher-end products. I’d probably even go so far as recommend a purchase of it if you haven’t tried some of these items. But I think a lot of higher-end makeup users might feel disappointed or let down with the contents in this box.

Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition is out of stock but hopefully sephora.com restocks at some point.

Did you get the box?

Glad I skipped this. The only thing that would’ve interested me is the Tom Ford lipstick (I have yet to try one).

So disappointed. When I ordered it, it had a different product listing, so I assumed I would be getting different samples. I’ve never tried a TF lipstick due to cost and was very impressed with the sample, but that’s about the only win. I guess the bag wasn’t as cheap as I expected, but I’ll never use it again.

Mine is arriving today. I show cats and travel a lot, so I’m all about the sample sizes. Plus I was ordering some other stuff and just threw it in on a whim. I get the regular Play Box, so why not LOL!

Cat shows are fascinating, so informative. At dog shows, nobody gives you the info that cat show judges do. What breed do you exhibit? See, that’s dog show talking…they might not be a breed/variety! And dogs are out and about…cats, esp show cats are not. How else can you fall in love with Scottish folds, or Munchkins, or Norwegian Forests? Much less learn about the breeds as part of the exhibition? Cat shows are great.

For the folks yearning to try a TF lipstick…try the local CCO. I got a Stavros after it was d/c’d, with no additional damage to the wallet, and without having some box dictate the color I chose.

I got it and it works for me. I wanted to try the Amore Pacific cream and I wanted another sample size of the SK-II essence. And I really wanted to try this particular shade of the TF lipstick. I recently had a J Plasma facial resurfacing and the recovery has been intense. Combine that with the heat here in AZ and I couldn’t muster up the courage to go the mall to get samples or try these products. Considering that I’m pretty much house bound right now, the $20 was well worth it for me.

I got it and was mildly disappointed by the contents, but for $20, only mildly disappointed. I’m still trying to get myself through the deluxe sample size of the SK-ii essence that I got a long time ago for a 1000 point perk (what a waste, though my daughter enjoys the mirror compact it came with), and I just don’t like it. . . don’t see results worth putting up with the awful smell. I’m not in love with the ingredient list of the moisture bound cream (or more specifically, alcohol 4th on the ingredient list), will probably try it on my hands first. Already have a sample of the hourglass primer that I haven’t yet touched. The lipstick, at least, is a really pretty color that I can wear. And I’m sure I’ll use the mascara, once I get through the other million I have on deck. I liked the idea of the tarot cards, but wish they had some actual information on them. A missed opportunity. And yes, the perfume should’ve been something new. But again, only $20 for all that, so I’m not upset. I AM upset about the new weekly wow that “just dropped.” It’s so clearly all stuff that they’re just trying to clear out their inventory. It’s almost insulting.

I just wish it was all newer high-end versus a bunch of repeats and older items :-/

only thing of interest to me would be the tom ford lipstick as i have never splurged to try out

Looks very uneventful. Thanks for your review Muse! You save me so much money.

I decided to order it and I will say I actually liked mine. The Sk-II is my fave essence and I absolutely love that stuff (do not use a cotton ball. Just drop some on your hand and pat into skin kinda like a man does with after-shave! It is amazing for acne prone skin). I love the lipstick and am happy to have it. And since I had never tried the mascara I was excited and I loved it and will buy a full size. Hourglass primer is good, but I am giving that one to a friend as I prefer others. All in all I say it was a decent box.
