Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition Review
I yet again gave into the temptation to purchase the Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition. If you missed my original post about the new All-Star Edition Play Box here’s a brief recap. This is extension to the Play by Sephora Subscription Service that’s available as a one time purchase. Originally Sephora launches the Iconic Edition Box a few short months ago but as a “Rouge Only” purchase. They obviously heard the outcries from non-Rouge members who also wanted in on purchasing the one time box because although, available to Rouge Members first, within a day it was available to everyone else.
The box is $20 and contains six tarot cards, a makeup pouch, and six deluxe size samples from high-end brands like Tom Ford, Dior, and others as well as 50 beauty bonus points that are added to your Sephora account after purchase.
I wasn’t impressed with the first box they did but I purchased the second one because I know many of you were curious about the contents and my thoughts on the box.
So, here’s the deets.
Weirdly, this disappeared from the Sephora site but if you Google it comes up and shows a review rating of 3.2 stars. I’d give it maybe 2 stars, it’s just not really worth the $20 as a lot of the items inside can be easily obtained at a higher-end counter as a sample with purchase or if you’re a good enough customer you can likely get your regular makeup artist or sales rep to just hand over the sample or even a nice rep who’ll kindly give you one.
This is a box I’d recommend for people who don’t typically splurge on higher-end makeup due to lack of funds or who just aren’t interested in spending big $$$ on higher-end makeup purchases. It’ll give you access to products you’ve never considered trying before or have wanted to but didn’t want to spend the money on.
It isn’t a box for those who are already higher-end makeup junkies as most of what is inside you’ve likely already tried or already own. I’d consider this box a win if the contents contained items I never tried before. For example, they include a generous sample of Flowerbomb perfume. At this point, I think everyone on the planet has tried it and either hated it, loved it, or found themselves in purgatory over it. A better option would to include the new Chanel Gabrielle. I’d totally think the twenty bucks was worth it if they took the initiative to include newly launched beauty like this!
Another boring product in the box is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (0.14 oz). If you subscribe to Ipsy, Birchbox, etc…you likely have half a dozen of these laying around. It’s not a bad product by any means, just a product that’s appears in a lot of beauty subscription boxes.
Other items include: Amore Pacific Moisture Bond Creme, Dior Mascara Professional Volume, SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, and Tom Ford Indian Rose Lip Colour. Again, all items I tried out before but still exciting picks for those who never experienced some of these higher-end makeup items.
One of the things I wasn’t into in the box was the addition of several “tarot cards” with descriptions of the items as well as “fortunes” that give you a “look” at your past, present, and future. It seemed childish and a waste of paper nor fitting with the higher-end items in the box.
Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition was a bust for me but I can see it as being interesting to those who never tried higher-end products. I’d probably even go so far as recommend a purchase of it if you haven’t tried some of these items. But I think a lot of higher-end makeup users might feel disappointed or let down with the contents in this box.
Play by Sephora The All-Star Edition is out of stock but hopefully sephora.com restocks at some point.
Did you get the box?
