The Wild and Crazy News That Chanel Will Be Sold At Ulta

beauty news

The wild and craziest news you might hear today is the fact that Chanel will be sold at Ulta. Yes, it’s true! Chanel makeup is coming to Ulta. Mary Dillon, Ulta’s CEO, made the major announcement yesterday during Ulta’s 2017 4th Quarter earnings call. You can read some of the transcript of the call at seekingalpha.com.

Chanel’s fragrances are already available in select stores so, it seems the next logical step would be to start carrying the color collection. They are introducing the cosmetics to a small number of Ulta Beauty locations later this year but it won’t be all that the brand offers but a mere edit of the core pieces. Perhaps in the future more options will be available. The first store getting the line will have it in a few weeks and is located in Westport, Connecticut.

Ulta hasn’t made a truly official statement as of yet and there’s no word if there website will also carry the line. I’ve personally reached out to Chanel today to see what details they can share and confirm but it might be a while before they have such information to available.

Chanel has made a push this year to increase their online viability by launching an Instagram account @chanelofficial not to mention with fragrance launches like Gabrielle and No 5 LEau and the faces of Lily Rose Depp and Kristen Stewart they hope to reach a wider age demographic.

Chanel Beaute has been a long standing tradition in high-end department stores and even Sephora doesn’t carry their cosmetic line merely their fragrance one. This movie is a clear indication of what I’ve said again and again over the past two years, that Chanel is in fact looking to attract a younger consumer.

On top of all this, Ulta Beauty also continues to grow and become competition with the sheer amount of brands they have collected from the Estee Lauder family in the last year such as NARS and MAC Cosmetics both extremely popular brands with makeup users.

Do you find the news that Chanel will be sold at Ulta exciting?

Why or why not?

Do share your thoughts! I’m looking forward to discussing this beauty news with you!

Wow! Honestly, the more brands I can use my Ulta points on (and earn points on), the better. I’ve never purchased anything from Chanel because a foundation that was given to me was so fragrant it made my eyes water. Maybe I’ll give them another go. I’ve heard the Tan de Chanel cream bronzer is good. What color products do you like from them, Muse?

    • Isabella Muse

Agreed! Points+discounts on chanel yes please! Some of my favs: Tweed Effect Blush, Vitalumiere Aqua, Rouge Allure, Jouse Contraste (regular powder blush line), Glossimer. 🙂

  • Ashley

I doubt these rumors. Chanel is considered a prestige brand, honestly I’m surprised Sephora doesn’t carry their makeup-they carry every other high end cosmetics brand: Givenchy, Dior, Guerlain, Armani, etc.

    • Isabella Muse

what rumors do you doubt? Confused. There’s no rumor here. Chanel will be sold at Ulta. It’s a fact. Did you read the post at all? 🙂

    • lisa

Large department stores, like Macy’s, are on their way out. Chanel (and other “prestige” brands) need another supplier to sell their products unless they plan to open up Chanel stores everywhere.

    • Susan

It’s not a rumor. I’ve already seen photos on Instagram of others’ Ulta stores and their Chanel displays. I know my local one won’t be getting it though; we seem to get no new prestige brands. 🙁

  • Miradan

I remember when Sephora carried Chanel makeup, up until 2005-ish, maybe a little later? I honestly lost interest in Chanel about 5 years ago (although at one point it was my favorite brand), and I don’t tend to shop at Ulta much, so this isn’t too exciting for me 😉

    • Isabella Muse

I can’t recall Chanel being at Sephora ever. How crazy is that? Just the fragrances! And I’ve been shopping Sephora for literally ages.

      • Miradan

When I first got into makeup ca. 2002, I lived in NYC and the sephora in the mid-West 70s carried Chanel — glossimers, blushes, skincare, lipstick, the works. So did the Sephora in Times Square, and the website. But at some point Chanel pulled out of Sephora — if I recall correctly, they didn’t like the yearly friends and family discount on their products. Different makeup world back then — discounts were much less common.

        • Isabella Muse

wow I don’t remember that at all. At the time I might have been crazy with school/work and chanel was well out of my budget ;-D It’s ironic they are at Ulta since Ulta does do 20% off on occasion ;D

  • lisa

I just wish Ulta and Sephora actually carried more of their lines in store, either that or had free shipping. It annoys me to no end that I would have to drive 45 minutes out of my way and pass probably 6 Ulta stores to buy Mac products because only 1 store carries them. Thankfully I have other store options for buying Mac. Same with a lot of the other products that I want to buy – all online only at both stores.

    • Isabella Muse

I know, totally agree 🙁 I have endless options in New York but sometimes when I am upstate the Sephora/Ulta stores are smaller and they don’t all the lines!

    • Janki

I know Sephora will let you order an item in store that is out of stock and it can be delivered for free at home. Wonder if Ulta has that.
On a side note- the Ultas near me are horrendous! So messy, gross testers and the staff doesn’t seem to be having any fun. I don’t even like buying MAC from there. It’s never a good vibe like when I got to sephora. At Sephora I walk away with tons of samples and consistently great service.

  • Cindy

We’ll see if Chanel is included in the 20% prestige coupon, I hope it is! Even more incentive to save points and take advantage of the multiple-point offers. Even if it winds up being excluded from coupons, nothing is excluded from points!

    • Isabella Muse

Hopefully! I think it would maybe irritate people if it wasn’t!

  • Carol G

I say the more the merrier! I just got the Nars blush palette for free with my points and that was $59. So yeah, Chanel is fine with me!

    • kjh

Score! I would love to see Chanel do Ulta the way Nars does Ulta, with some exclusives that aren’t on S or N’s site. When Ulta gets some cachet (sp?), I admit I get a slight shiver of Schadenfreude about Sephora. Sorry, not sorry, S. 893 to go for rouge this year, and quite proud of my low buy. I relate to what Miradan said about Chanel falling off the radar; finding mall visits quite unpalatable. 15-20 years ago, I lived at Bloomie’s, even though it is an hour away. Now, it’s almost all online after reviews. But beefing up the Joues Contrastes has a def appeal, soooo good!

  • Adrienne

I am excited because of the points and prestige items. I truly hoard my points everywhere. Maycs had a rewards program called Plenti points and partnered with a drug store chain. They recently decided to discontinue this program. I had $58 in points and I actually used them at Macys on the Chanel hydra eye gel and used the 15% beauty event discount. I try to always save them for prestige purchases. I hope that’s a good hydrating gel and I know you’ve tried them all 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

Plenti is a really generous system that has saved me a lot of $$ at macys 😀 I was sad to hear the news it was being diced. I really like Hydra Eye Gel but it actually contains alcohol (but I still use it EEP!!!).

  • Kimmwc03

Excited if they will actually have the items online. I know my local store won’t carry Chanel because it is a smaller one (although crazy crowded at all times) and they don’t carry MAC or ColourPop.

  • TropicalChrome

Like others, I find this somewhat less than exciting because few of the stores around me carry these brands. If I’m going to pay for shipping, I will use an online retailer that is out of state to at least save the tax.

  • Bailey

Now Ulta only needs to start selling Bite, MUFE, Beauty Blender and Josie Maran and I’d never need to go to Sephora again! Ulta’s reward system and coupons make them a much better choice for me than Sephora.

  • Stacie

This makes me very happy! I’m crossing my fingers that my local Ulta is one of the lucky ones. Thanks for sharing this news!! Stacie xo

  • mylinda

I don’t know how I feel about this news. Last year, I started buying more things from Ulta but after the news about the used makeup being sold by Ulta went viral, I stopped buying from them. I was so bothered by it! I read that whole exchange you had with the person that said Sephora used to sell Chanel (surprised!) but pulled out because they didn’t like the friends and family discount? If that’s true, then chances are, Ulta will be excluding Chanel from their coupons. Do you think? Either way, I wish Chanel had gone to Sephora instead of Ulta, just because of the free shipping. It’s unlikely that any Ulta near me will stock Chanel makeup anyway.

  • Lori Lovett

Oooooh! I just hope it goes online soon! I have over 2200 points burning a hole in my pocket, and I need to use them all at the same time to get the biggest bang for my buck!!!

  • Judy

Oh my gosh, I am dying! This is spectacular news as Chanel is my favorite overall brand. ❤❤❤

  • jean

WOW!!! I used to be a business manager for Chanel and you could’ve knocked me over with a feather when I read this!! We were known for not doing a GWP(which I secretly loved) but yes I agree, that they are trying to cash in on the Craze of makeup influencers and youtubers. Why would they not? Just wondering why it has taken them so long??

Can you say “Stuck in their ways!”

    Thanks for the news!!

    • Isabella Muse

It is for sure shocking and interesting news. I suspect they have been slowing trying to gain the attention of a younger demographic and the next logical step was social media. But yes, it does seem like it took them a long time to get here. But considering Chanel is so steeped in rich history it is understandable why they haven’t yet.

  • Flaky

Even if all they carry is the mascara, I’d be happy. I love the cream bronzer – but I doubt I’ll be running out of the one I have anytime soon!

Chanel would be wise to think about some minis like Hourglass has done. The bronzer would be a good start!

  • Olivia

I read everyone’s comments but I’m still feeling really torn… I used to be extremely pro-Sephora, and in all the hype with the Ulta points being a better deal I tried going that way. But after a few unsuccessful attempts, some crap customer service, and really bare shelves at more than one Ulta around me, I’ve just given up on them completely. Is it just me or are they very inconsistent from store to store, and often stuck up and inattentive??
