Maybelline Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick review and swatches

Maybelline Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick ($7.99) is a new hydrating, shiny finish lipstick collection that launched with the Maybelline Summer 2018 Collection in 10 shades.

I am beyond excited that Maybelline decided to do a shiny lipstick for Summer. I really miss lipsticks like the Color Whisper Lipstick that were discontinued and it feels way too long since Maybelline introduced anything glossy or shiny anything so I was all about trying these new Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipsticks.

LOreal also introduced Colour Riche Shine Lipstick prior to this launch and I’m hopeful this means that maybe matte everything is coming to an end!

Maybelline Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick arrives in pink metallic barrel that holds 0.1 oz of lipstick. In comparison, the L’Oreal Colour Riche Shine Lipstick is $9.99 and the same size. Of course, prices will vary from place to place and in my experience I was able to locate either one of these for around $6-$7 each at stores like Target or Harmons but full retail price is $7.99 and $9.99.

If I had to choose between the two I’d like go for Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick since the finish seems a bit shiny and the formula more hydrating. But both are perform very well, with great pigment, a smooth, easy glide on lips, and plenty of shine. No matter which formula you go with you’re bound to enjoy them if you like lighter, shinier lipsticks.

Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick’s texture is a light, melty formula that applied very smoothly on my drier lips. The glide was like melted butter and the shine was fairly obvious after application but wore away about three hours in but color remained for about an hour more after that. I thought the formula was pleasantly lightweight and barely there with a nice shot of hydration. I experience no migration or feathering and color stayed on my lips without moving around. The color pay off was opaque on a single application but got deeper and richer the more I built. It feels like a very traditional shiny Japanese lipstick formula that most brands like KATE, Visee, etc favor in Japan. It’s quite a buttery lipstick formula that feels very nice on my parched lips. I didn’t detect any fragrance nor flavor in this formula.

Maybelline Scarlet Flame Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick

Maybelline Spicy Mauve Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick

All in all, Maybelline Color Sensational Shine Compulsion Lipstick is one of those formula I just want to own all the shades of. This is lightweight, hydrating, pigmented, and most important NOT MATTE! The shine factor is quite lovely and gives the appearance of a light layer of gloss on my lips.

Truly a great lipstick formula well worth picking up if you’re exhausted of all the mattes lately!

Where to buy

Amazon Ulta Walmart

It provided excellent color pay off, a nice hydrating feel, and plenty of shine in a comfortable to wear formula that felt very lightweight.

Great colors. I so love you in red! (No creepy intended.). They all look great; formula sounds like a needed drastic change of direction.

    • Isabella Muse

ha ;-D no creepiness taken ;-D It’s a lovely formula for sure!

My night job is in retail. I don’t dare compliment anything, without saying ‘I don’t mean that in a creepy way.’ I’ve been feeling like my freedom of speech rights have been trampled by the current PC climate. You can’t even say nice things anymore. I’m sure you had a blast in the Netherlands (and other places?). Hope you picked up some Euro stuff to review.

I know what you mean. You have to be super careful how you talk to people lately everyone is very, very, very sensitive. I had a really good time. My xboyfriend lives in Amsterdam, I’m still very good friends with him and his little sister so it was nice to see them both. Especially her, I mean I remember when she was a kid and now she’s a beautiful woman, it’s crazy how time flies! I talk to her constantly via vid chat but haven’t seen her in person in mmm maybe 2 years? 3? And it feels like she’s just entirely different in that short a time! I was in London as well and Paris. Was a good trip but felt a bit rushed because I allocated two weeks only. Europe always feels like you need a month but I don’t have the luxury of being away from work for that long since I’m self employed. When I was a kid we used to go for three months out of the year in the Summer but now I have to be an adult ;-D I picked up fragrances mainly as I had quite a few on my wish list which aren’t available in the US. I might review them if there’s any interest ;-D I also picked up some accessories (handbags and shoes) and some treats lol! Can’t go to the UK without stocking up on Monster Munch!

I so want to read a review of your finds on vacay across seas!

I didn’t do much makeup shopping tbh! I purchased a ton of fragrances and other goodies ;-D

  • Paige

You look really happy modeling these lipsticks. It’s clear you’re a fan.

  • Dee

All look good on you but Chocolate Lust especially so! I too miss the Color Whisper lipsticks so am excited to try these! With the exception of eye shadow I’m over matte!

    • Isabella Muse

thanks Dee! ;-D gosh right? Those were so nice! Why did they axe them!?

  • GD

    Hi Isabella,

Love your blog! I was just wondering if this has shimmer or glitter in it? They look great on you btw! Thanks!

    Hi Isabella,

    • Isabella Muse

Thank you GD! 🙂 <3! No shimmer in any of the ones I purchased!

      • GD

Thank you for the info! I am more of a matte lip fan, but the colors look so pretty I want to give it a try!

PS sorry for the double post!

        • Isabella Muse

My pleasure 🙂 I hope you like them! They are nice and shiny! No worries about the double post! It happens 😀

I love the L’Oreal ones so I imagine I will love these as well…Don’t forget, there are 5 shades that are Walgreens exclusive, according to Allure.com. Can’t wait to look for these this weekend…

  • Ruth

They look and sound like the Revlon lip butters-I loved those so much!! It broke my heart when they discontinued them.

    • Isabella Muse

They were so great! This formula is a bit thinner and less creamier! But those lip butter, man I miss them!

      • Ruth

I had one that was a light berry shade, it was a MLBB color and I couldn’t tell you how many tubes of it I went through, it was a HG item for me. I’m still looking for a dupe of it =(

        • Isabella Muse

awww that sucks! I hate to see my HG products discontinued 🙁

  • Kish

These look awesome! I can’t wait to check them out in person. Exactly what I had hoped they were.

  • Maria

You look so pretty in these shades. I have to look for them.

  • Magenta Wilde

No noticeable fragrance? My wallet may be in danger. These look really pretty. I used to love matte lipsticks, and still do like matte bullets for bolder colors, but this matte liquid lipstick trend has gone on long enough. I hope to see some more shiny and balm-like formulas hitting the shelves. Not everything has to dry to a flat, dry finish.

  • Danielle

I loved the Color Whisper lipsticks too. I think these sound great. I was never fond of the matte lip trend. I like shine and comfort.

  • Cassie

I am sooo…over matte EVERYTHING. This looks very promising! 🙂

  • Kgirl

Lovely colors! I am gonna have to look for these…
What is your favorite Japanese lipstick?
    I agree….over the matte.

    • Isabella Muse

I cannot tell a lie I love (and MISS) T’estimo’s lipsticks sooooo much! Sadly, since those are long gone! I do really like the new Maquillage Dramatic Rouge EX and Dramatic Lip Treatment EX, Coffret D’or Premium Stay Rouge is lovely, and Holika Holika Heartfull Glossy Lipstick is lovely!
