NYX Shimmer Down Lip Veil Review and Swatches

NYX Shimmer Down Lip Veil ($7.99) is a high shine, shimmery lipgloss that launched in eight shades for Summer 2018. I am always in awe how many lipsticks, lipgloss, and other lip items NYX has released to date. I swear that at this point NYX must have like 30 or lip products in rotation. Do they even make any other makeup!? There are legit 11 pages with 12 products per page in the lip category on that website. WTH? It’s just overkill not to mention confusing AF.

They just literally launched the new Lip Lingerie in Gloss, Shimmer, and Glitter Finishes so I relly do have to question was Shimmer Down Lip Veil really a necessary release? I get they want to stay relevant and keep fans happy by launching new products. But there has to be more to your existence than lip products.

Ok, rant over, I had to get that out.

On with the review!

NYX Shimmer Down Lip Veil is 0.14 oz in size and available is available in eight shade selections. The formula has iridescent color shifting shimmer. This was created to use on top of your favorite lipstick but they recommend using it on bare lips as well to create a pretty shimmery effect. Personally, I think it looks nice either way but all in all this is a sheer, uneventful product.

They call this a veil which is a way more accurate term than lipgloss. The formula is very thin and feels almost like a light, thin lip oil but there is a slight grittiness. The texture has a light hydrating feel at first with a hint of shimmery shine at first application but it legit disappears within 15 minutes of application. The gloss is very sheer with a hint of pretty shimmer but the wear time is zero. I apply this and within minutes of application I have a bit of shimmer but no glossiness or shine. It just disappears like some sort of weird magic trick. Oddly enough, I noticed a vanilla fragrance and flavor the first time I used it but since that first time it seems to have disappeared.

I did find one use for it which is applying it on top of my lipstick and applying clear gloss on top of that so I get the sparkle factor from it but not necessarily the shine which I need to get from an extra gloss. But that sort of takes away from the point of the product which is to provide shine and a shimmer.

NYX Shimmer Down Lip Veil is a product launch that is utterly pointless. NYX did not need to add this to their collection. They have plenty of lip options at this point and really another one was an unnecessary addition to their line. I am sort of shocked because reviews on Ulta are amazing and going so far as to call the product a perfect Fenty Beauty dupe. Umm…no. I’m not seeing that all. This is sheer, short wearing, and disappointing.

Sorry NYX!

Where to buy

Ulta

NYX Shimmer Down Lip Veil is a 0.14 oz top coat or lip veil that launched in eight shade selections for Summer 2018. In my experience, this is a sheer, very lightly hydrating formula with a hint of glossiness and shimmer that completely disappears within a few minutes of wear.

Pros

  • Very lightweight, adds a pretty hint of shimmer and shine to lips.

Cons

  • Very short wear.
  • Subtle grittiness on the initial application.
  • Very sheer, no color, mostly shimmer.

Who

If you’re ok with doctoring this formula you might like the hint of shimmer it creates on lips. The formula looks quite nice over lipstick but does need a clearer gloss on top to maintain the shimmer since it does wear away quickly!

You are totally right: they have too many damn lip products! It is overwhelming for sure. I don’t even look at their display at Ulta anymore because it’s just too much!

it’s confusing as hell! It’s just too much! If they can spend a bit more time on eyeshadow, blush even, that would be great! they put way too much time and energy into lip products!

I usually come here, and also at Temptalia, to check products before I buy, because a lot of times those reviews at the ecommerce sites are not very reliable. I don’t know if some of them were paid to say good things, I have bought some things that are pure garbage but have so much rave at those sites (where you buy)! Plus, your reviews are so funny, I read them even if they are products I have no intention of buying. 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

Not at all! It seems like you get no one ranting about stuff! Sephora is really bad about this, it’s all good reviews and very few poor ones! aw thanks <3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ughhh they kill me with all these lip products. I just don’t get it. And the Lip Lingerie glosses are all the same color, just different finishes. It’s like they aren’t even trying. I was at Ulta today and I was overwhelmed by all the choices, so I just walked away. What chaos.

    • Isabella Muse

I feel the same. It’s so many choices and most are so similar to each other it’s not like I’m missing anything if I skip a launch because they are just the same rerun of formulas!

I swatched a bunch of these in store. This shade was the thinnest and most sheer. Some shades were much thicker and opaque. I can see how the opaque shades could be considered dupes for Fenty’s glosses.

    • Isabella Muse

maybe I need to try more shades! The one was really sheer and thin! I wish it was thicker! That would be awesome!

You’re right that Nyx has too many lip products, but I’m still sad that Ulta doesn’t carry their butter lipsticks anymore. That is one of my favorite lipstick formulas of all time! I guess the tried and true products just don’t sell as well as the new exciting ones, so Nyx feels like they have to change it up all the time.

I was thinking maybe lip stuff is just cheap to produce and having a new one time and time again keeps them relevant as a go to for lip products!?

The one thing in this review that stands out above everything else in terms of making this a no-buy is your mention of the gritty texture. That is a pet peeve of mine. I don’t care how pretty a lip product is, if it feels gritty, even slightly, it’s a big NO for me. Thank you for the honest and informative review.

P.S. I’ve been wanting to tell you how much I love your “About the Muse” paragraph!

  • Cassie

I’ve been thinking the same thing with every NYX e-mail touting their latest-and-greatest lip product–“More?! And is this new?” I can’t keep up! Ha, ha… 🙂

I completely agree with you about NYX Shimmer Down Lip Veil. I really liked the shade I got but find the gloss wears off immediately and you are left with a bit of glitter on dry lips. The other thing that leaves me with a feeling of unease is when I wiped it off some of it stuck to my bathroom sink and days later I can still see it. It reminds me of nail polish and who wants to be putting that on their lips? Terrible product and a waste of money

    • Isabella Muse

AW 🙁 sorry! And whoa on the sink! that’s crazy! I know it was irritating to get off my lips when the shine factor wore away 🙁
