Jouer Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer review and swatches

Jouer Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer ($22) is a new full-coverage concealer available in 25 shades that contains hyaluronic acid and resveratrol. You might remember be raving Tarte Shape Tape Concealer when it originally launched. It’s a formula that surprised simply because I didn’t expect a matte, full-coverage concealer to work out so well for me. I associate matte with dryness and I’m already dry so the idea of a matte concealer under my eyes does concern me. Turns out the formula was ultra creamy, blended well, and didn’t cake or crease at all.

Fast forward several months after I polished some tubes and I am convinced they somehow changed the formula. I received some PR samples originally and I purchased two other shades from Tarte’s website around the same time I reviewed and swatched my samples (some of the PR shades didn’t work for me). All of those were just fine. About a year later there was a sale and I was running low on my original tubes so I did a re-purchase and that’s when things seemed off. The texture is the same great creamy consistency but I noticed that the formula was drier after blending and started creasing under my eyes. I hadn’t changed my routine at all and was prepping my eyes the same way. Was I drier maybe? Was my skin somehow the culprit? I have my doubts. I think they changed up the formula somehow. I’m convinced of it.

Anyway, I still use it however, I’ve been searching for something better and I’m so glad a lot of brands have been launching concealers lately, Jouer Cosmetics being one. I remember the days when Jouer used to have those cute snap together cream blushes and lipglosses. Needless to say they have come a very, very long way.

Jouer Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer arrives in an elegant barrel with its gold top. It has an attached sponge applicator for application and holds 0.139 oz of concealer. This apparently hyaluronic acid but has a soft-matte finish according to the brand. Surprisingly it has an ultra-creamy texture and it feels lightly hydrating under my eyes. Hyaluronic acid is quite low on the list of ingredients but I felt like my finer lines looked plumped up and diminished when using this.

Sephora recommended the shade Macadmia for me which is a medium shade with neutral undertones. I tend to selection a light medium with neutral or warmer undertones when shopping concealer but I decided to go with Sephora’s recommendation. The shade actually is a light-medium and does run lighter than a standard medium in my opinion. It has a lighter beige undertone that seemed to make the shade lighter than advertised. It’s not an ideal match for me and I’d like to check out more shades to see if I can find a better match. I can’t confirm but based on this shade alone that might mean the shades run lighter.

None the less, I still used it happily and I look amazing thank you very much. As I said the formula is quite creamy, blends super easily, and didn’t feel matte at all to me. It sets flawlessly and didn’t crease into my finer lines. Thankfully the shade didn’t look pasty either! It looked just fine after I applied my makeup but I still want to sort through more shades and see if I can find something a touch darker.

The texture is quite thick but I didn’t have issues blending it out. It’s very pigmented and I would say it does provide full-coverage but Shape Tape is considerably more pigmented in my humble opinion. However, this doesn’t mean this isn’t a workhorse. It is! It’s pigmented enough to hide major flaws, dark circles, puffiness, etc….! The wear time was fabulous at around 12 plus hours without creasing or fading.

Overall, Jouer Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer is a major hit for me. I have to admit I did have some reservations about this formula. It’s been very hyped up and you know how hyped up products end up turning out. But it’s actually living up to the hype I’ve heard and I’m very pleased I purchased it. I was impressed with the formula, the price, the performance, it’s a great concealer!

I’m Muse Approving it!

Where to buy

Sephora Beautylish Beauty Bay

Jouer Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer is a new full-coverage concealer with a soft matte finish available in 25 shades which contains hyaluronic acid and resveratrol. The concealer is $22 and 0.139 oz in size. I loved this formula! It’s super creamy, lightly hydrating, blends easily, and wears for longer than 12 hours without creasing or fading. I was a little concerned about the matte finish but I thought it was very easy to blend out and it looked like it plumped up my finer lines and lessened their appearance!

Pros

  • Anyone with drier, finely lined eyes.
  • Pigmented enough to conceal minor or major imperfections.
  • Super creamy, lightly hydrating, blends easily.
  • Wears long.
  • Fairly affordable.
  • Available in a wide variety of shades.

Cons

  • Shades MIGHT run lighter (basing this off my own purchase which didn’t feel medium with neutral undertones but more lighter with cooler light beige undertones)

Has anyone tried the accompanying foundation?

I know full coverage foundation is not typically your jam, Muse 🙂

I am obsessed with foundations as you are with concealers! <3

Not yet, but almost certainly will, given the givens (shade and ingredients ok). Don’t know if it is live near me. I really like the Jouer TM, so prob a go. Nordie’s has Jouer, too, right?

    • Isabella Muse

ummm yeah I think they literally just started carrying it a few short months ago!

I think the next review I’d love to see is for the Charlotte Tilbury concealer from you. I’ve tried it at Sephora and it felt pretty soft.

I have the CT concealer and I’m not a fan. I prefer the Jouer and Nars concealer. They are both more hydrating and has more coverage.

        • Isabella Muse

I’m not much of a fan of the NARS one but loving the Jouer 😀

  • Christina

I still have some of the Jouer snap-together eyeshadows and lip glosses! 🙂 Such pretty colors!

Thanks. The Jouer concealer was on my forgotten list. I do use their TM, so it ought to be good. Going to save it for the beautylish card sale, rather than big S. I did ask you to do an explanatory post on that sale, right? Plan, plan, plan.

I feel the exact same way with my Shapetape concealer. I loved it when I first started to use it over a year ago, and now my most recent bottle seems to look so much drier. I thought it was just me and have been trying to use different eye creams. I am on the hunt for something new and will give the Jouer a try! Thanks for the great review!

It isn’t you! I feel the formula changed! My eyes are dry but I always felt Shapetape was super creamy and easy to wear never settled into fine lines, blended well, but now each tube I buy seems drier and drier 🙁 I’m so sad because it’s a fav of mine. This is a lot more creamier! I hope you like it!
