Josie Maran Skin Dope Argan + Hemp Oil with Live Footage of Me Reading The Reviews On It

Some part of me thinks Josie Maran Skin Dope Argan + Hemp Oil ($65) is a ridiculous name. Dope, hemp, am I reading to much into the innuendos? As we head into Spring 2019, you’re going to start seeing a lot of “cleaner” beauty products and ones that include hemp oil. This trended started late last year with the introduction of products from Milk Makeup like their Kush High Volume Mascara which contains hemp-derived cannabis seed oil. Why do I feel like brands do this just to seem somehow edgy versus any actual real benefits from hemp oil? Don’t get me wrong here…! Hemp oil has good hydrating benefits but I do question if brands want to appear a bit more hip by including ingredients like hemp oil in their products.

Josie’s formula is a bit expensive for what you get. It’s simply organic argan oil and hemp oil nothing more, nothing less. 1.7 oz is $65 and most would argue they can get either oil for a few bucks at a local health food store. Her formula promises to address dryness, loss of firmness and elasticity as well as dullness as well as aging issue thanks to the fact it’s rich in omega 3, 6, and 9. There marketing says it’ll reveal bouncier, glowier skin and that skin will “bounce back”. It’s also part of Sephora’s “clean” line up of products that’s free of mineral oil, sulfates, etc…!

It sounds interesting enough but I’m always skeptical about the marketing on some of these products. As with most new product launches at Sephora this has great reviews already with people saying their skin is bouncy and smooth.

Actual live footage of me reading these reviews:

What do you think of Josie Maran Skin Dope Argan + Hemp Oil?

I think the name is a buzzkill for me. It’s just really not what I associate with Josie Maran. I mean, really, Skin Dope? I’m obviously getting way too old…!

To me, this just sounds like they’re trying to be hip with the word “dope.” I rolled my eyes when I read it. Why not just leave it as Argan Oil and Hemp Seed Oil? I get it, not catchy enough, but I don’t really need or care for my skincare to have a catchy clever name. And if it does, I’d prefer it to have a more scientific-y, futuristic name–sounds way fancier and like I’m using the latest and greatest technology. LOL! Maybe it’s because I’m always hunting for the newest formulations.

Yeah, I know Hemp Seed oil is good, but nah, I’m not spending that much on Josie’s version. I don’t trust Sephora’s reviews, EVER. Don’t be swayed! It’s the Influensters!

Ok, good because I feel like I’m too old sometimes to appreciate their “edge”. I read it and rolled my eyes too! It’s so try hard to me. at least it isn’t called dope skin that would totally make me smack my head against a wall lol! Me either! I’ve become more and more and more skeptical about sephora reviews lately :-/

‘Dope’ is like ‘twat.’ So retro, it must be becoming in again. (BTW, the vagizzle word is actually pronounced with a standard short a, rhyming with bat, so we USers have been mispronouncing it for decades. ) I use CBD oil for gastro pain. Works. For my other inflammation, not at all. I had the brilliant idea to mix a drop with saline, and apply it to my scalp, where I was getting new pain from the whatever inflammatory condition. Verrrry bad idea, and added only the tiniest amount. I have not added any CBD to any facial skincare….kind of afraid to, and will def not try any. And, yes, big hate for the edgy bandwagon. Now that sex and kink names are passe, we have to expand on the drug aspect. Anything that tries too hard to be trendy will be a write off for me.

I have to agree – this name caused an immediate, involuntary eye roll from me. I’m not personally a big fan of the brand because I feel like they put out a lot of simple and overpriced products, but this is especially a turn-off. I just hope we don’t find out that they are another brand paying for fake reviews, like with Sunday Riley (and I’m sure tons of others). Personally, I’m always suspicious when an item launches and immediately has glowing reviews.

    • Isabella Muse

I think mostly it might be influencer related as influencer gives out free products and urges you to review them :-/

  • Carol G

I agree. Just go to any health food store and buy the oil. This is over priced and gimmicky. However I must go to the Sephora website right now just for the entertainment of reading the “reviews”.

    • Isabella Muse

haha! one simply reads “my smooth glowed and was bouncy” oh lawd…!

  • Elaine G

You are funny…with live footage. I was thinking you really did a film thing…hee hee. Dumb name, yes. I like Tarte Maracuja oil best. Good comments already…u are not old! Trust me!

    • Isabella Muse

      lol! ;D I’m a goof ;-D Aw thanks sometimes I feel like a dinosaur!

First thing I said, what a stupid name. Now I have been using Herbivore’s Emerald Oil and I like it a lot. But too many brands are rushing to catch the cbd/hemp/etc train and it’s just a bit much for me. Also, I no longer read any reviews from Sephora. No one buys stuff anymore. It’s all given for their “honest review.” Yeah.

Also, Briogeo hair recently came out with tea tree oil and castor oil and it’s insanely priced for what it is. Like you said, it can be bought at health food stores for much cheaper. But the reviews are glowing. I roll my eyes.

    • Isabella Muse

agreed! even stuff for your dog suddenly has hemp oil in it. hemp oil dog biscuits, hemp oil dog food, just feels like a bunch of trend. I do too! I do too! to the back of my head lol!

  • amy

Hemp oil, and it’s praises, has been around for decades, so I don’t think it’s necessarily a “trend” in terms of it being used in so many products. That said, I do think the more “mainstream” brands are jumping on the bandwagon, and cashing in on the potential profits. Hemp I actually an amazing product, which is why the government banned it, which is another story itself…

My biggest issue with this product, as well as the brand itself, is the exhorbitant price gouging. While I do like the idea products, and will use my Sephora points on occasion to get deluxe samples, I’ll actually buy my oils at Whole Foods or Sprouts…

  • Michelle Luna

$65 for not even 2 ounces? I can make this for like $5 at home. Cripes.
I’m with you and Christina, companies trying to appear edgy with all this hemp stuff makes me roll my eyes, and what’s worse is realizing tons of people out there actually believe it! (I was reading reviews on Amazon for a hemp seed oil and lots of questions and reviews about how it gets you high – Um, sorry folks, you’re creating your own placebo affect there! Makes me think of movie scenes where the goody-goody kid tries what they think is drugs or alcohol, not realizing they were tricked by the mean popular kids, and are like “Woah I’m so high/drunk!”)
Anyway I find this stuff extremely overpriced and the wannabe hype around hemp anything turns me off, so I’ll just keep using my much much cheaper bottles of argan and hemp oils either separately or mixed in my own recipes!

Also I don’t trust Sephora/Influenster reviews either, not only because so many of them are lying on purpose, but so many others just don’t even know what they’re talking about! I’m not going to take the word of a 24 year old that some anti-aging oil works, like are you kidding me? Haha. I just feel bad for the people who believe them.
I identify with Red Forman too much these days….
