The Most Annoying Thing About Ulta Right Now………………

I’ve been shopping online since 1995. I remember the first time I placed an Amazon order it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my online life. I’m avid reader and prior to Amazon I was an absolute book store h0r but I also ordered from book catalogs which took ages and ages to ship. I’d say Amazon was my gateway drug into the world of online shopping. Needless to say online shopping has exploaded since my first Amazon order and you can get just about anything you could possibly want or need online. Groceries, hardware, software, books, makeup, clothes, shoes, dog food, fresh food, etc….etc…!

I also remember Sandra Bullock ordering a pizza online in the movie the Net and being all, “OMG WHEN CAN I DO THAT?” Now ordering food on an app is second nature! It’s pretty crazy how online shopping evolved.

This year thought an highly annoying trend developed with all the packages I ordered during the Christmas season and for the past few months it’s been happening with Ulta as well!

Show of hands how many people are very annoyed with this new weird trend Ulta has of shipping part of your order? I recently ranted about that one time Ulta shipped me a sample of Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Hair Color Tint. A SAMPLE! Nothing else from my order! JUST A SAMPLE! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?

Needless to say for about 9 months or so this is common for Ulta. They ship my orders in two shipments. I never, ever get a full order anymore. It’s always broken into two shipments and it drives me up one wall and down another. I just find this very irritating for some reason. If I order something I want it fast and I want it all in one go.

The add insult to injury they typically ship out the first box with two items and ship order the larger portion of the order a day or two later. Oh my god I want to cut someone when they do this.

It’s not only Ulta though. This past Christmas was a nightmare to keep track of packages and orders I did because I was getting like 5 different ships from one retailer. They broke all my orders up and would ship one item from an order that contains like five things. Typically as orders come in from my Black Friday shopping I don’t open them and just place them in my closet to wrap later on. But since the orders all kept getting broken up I felt compelled to open everything to make sure I got the complete order. It was a bit confusing.

I imagine this is because items might be shipping from different warehouses but it is still very annoying none the less.

    I have noticed this about Ulta, just happened yesterday. I ordered 6 boxes of my hair color, it was on sale, they shipped 4 from Indiana and 2 from Texas. Annoying AF. LOL but yeah, all holiday season this was happening. Also the fucking scotch tape they put on the bottles, it’s hard to get off and sometimes ruins the packaging.

    On another shipping note — Sephora is totally pissing me off too…Order and eyeshadow pallet, they pack it in paper, nothing else. I’ve had 4 or 5 broken eyeshadows in the last few months, and I’m worried they’re going to think I’m lying. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

      OMG yes! the scotch tape! WTF! Sephora does nothing for padding. But the worst case is Lush! Lush just throws shit in a box and calls it a day! everything breaks or spills and they proceed to sort of make you feel like you’re lying when you tell them your stuff is ruined!

      Not only does the tape break soft nails on removal, but U has put liquid items in upside down. A great plan, when the inner seal is not intact….and they NEVER check that! U has been ok except 1 in recent Mo. Looove a big box from S with one tiny thing rattling around and zero padding. Why not use a bubble wrap envelope? Don’t answer. Clearly, they don’t have any. I think these examples are somewhat of an indictment of US work ethic. I never get anything from Zoeva or Yesstyle that is anything less than perfect. And it’s not the guest workers, as they call them in Germany. I’m sure many of the packers are not native to the countries of the package origin. We have come to accept and even expect…..SHODDY.

    Yes, I find it annoying but I don’t think it will get any better. Especially since they arrive more often than not on different days or with different carriers. As they bring on more and more brands, there will probably be more split between warehouses. If they could improve their shipping times it could become more tolerable.

      yeah unfortunately you are right. It seems that this is going to be the standard now 🙁 Shipping is weird! Sometimes I’ll get it in three days, other times I am up to 7 days :-/

    This just happened to me, but it was Sephora. Now, I did order two things from the sale section so I just assumed that since they were somewhat “leftover” products that they must have been at two warehouses. I’m wondering if Ulta is starting to keep products staged by warehouse instead of all items at each warehouse? It probably makes things much more efficient for the warehouse workers, only having a certain amount of different products to pull from.

    I could be totally off base, and maybe Ulta is just trying to stress how much you need that Lime Crime hair dye… 😉

      LOL that damn hair dye! To me it seems logical to keep it all under one roof as it cuts down on shipping costs and supplies! But maybe it’s just cheaper to have things in diff warehouses?!

    Yes Muse. The majority of my orders from Target website are in multiple boxes. One order with 7 items come in 3 different boxes. I have tracking numbers all over. Some are sent Ups and others are US mail or Surepost. It is crazy.

    I too find this VERY annoying! Over Christmas I had an order shipped to my daughter in another state. Because of theft in her apartment building, she had the order redirected to come to the UPS facility. Because it’s redirected, there is a $3.50 fee per package. The order was split into 2 boxes with one of the boxes only containing a $3.00 item. She didn’t know what was in the box until she opened it. So she paid a$3.50 redirecting fee for a $3.00 item!

    I’m laughing because we all had the same experience and same annoyance. I also ordered a lot of hair products during one sale AG and the same scotch tape and multiple shipments with oversize boxes. So I can shampoo my hair but wait on conditioner. Lol
    Also a few said to “be shipped separately” hand written next to the item but the shipping invoice showed it was included in that shipment and I had to file a dispute for my credit because it was never sent and they were not aware of the hand written piece.

      OH NO! that would piss me off lol! You have to wait to wash your hair thanks Ulta lol! wow, that sucks even harder! thankfully haven’t had that happen but damn…!

    this has happened to me both with Ulta and Sephora and every time there is an item missing from my order, it’s so frustrating.

    I had a problem when I ordered eyeshadow duos from NARS. The box arrived with no packing or air bags inside, just folded tissue paper! One of the eye shadow duos arrived completely cracked inside. Isolde was a mess & almost ruined the placemat I opened it on. NARS was really good about replacement & I e mailed them when the replacement arrived (same way with no packing inside). Fortunately, the replacement wasn’t damaged. I said to pass on to their shipping department that they need something besides the contents inside their boxes so they don’t crash into each other during shipping.

    It’s also so frustrating because the retailer usually has a minimum spend to get free shipping so I’ve often added small items onto my purchase to qualify. Nothing makes me crazier than when the package shows up and it’s just my add on item and the item I actually want is shipped separate. Obviously I didn’t need to buy that item to get free shipping then!

    I must be lucky! Anything from Ulta lately has arrived all in one box!

    I have had cracked/broken eyeshadows come from other retailers but Ulta has been fine.

    I agree though, some companies just chuck the product in a box and out it goes. But conversely, UD does overkill in their packing! Ordered one eyeliner and my god, the amount of tissue paper, the size of the box was ridiculous. An eyeliner can go in a padded bubble mailer envelope imo. So some companies are wasting waaaay too much in packing products. Which pisses me off because a lot of people don’t recycle.

    I haven’t had this happen with Ulta (YET; I’m sure my time will come), but Target is awful about it. In all honesty, I wouldn’t mind getting ONE shipment a day or two later. Fewer packages sitting on my porch advertising that I’m not at home during the day, and fewer opportunities for my hardheaded younger cat to escape to the great outdoors while I’m juggling packages and trying to get in the door.

        I feel your pain, Muse! Dash (my younger one) is fast on his feet and has a head of solid granite; as far as he’s concerned, he lives by his own rules. He’s the first cat I’ve ever had who won’t even humor me when it comes to the kitchen counters and the dining room table – he doesn’t even wait until my back is turned, he jumps up there right in front of me. (As the Significant Other says, “If he weren’t so sweet and loving, you’d wring his neck.”) Fortunately my older boy, Tuxi Tom (a/k/a the Tuxman), is as agreeable as they come! I couldn’t handle another one like Dash.

    I finally dragged all of the boxes out of my apartment last night… plus 3 garbage bags worth of packaging material. It feels so wasteful! Count me in the crazy group! I don’t understand how some of these companies could possibly be making money between the discounts, cash back, and multiple shipments (I’m looking at you, Kohl’s)!

    Absolutely agree, wasteful,of packing materials and must cost more for shipping, these expenses are then passed in to you and I in some form or another. Grrrr.

    My worst was an 8 item order, and it came in 8 mailings. I had a shipping confirmation from each one, then a delivery confirmation from each one, so 16 emails! not to mention having to go pick them up as I’m not home to accept deliveries in the day. So many email and trips to the courier depot!

    I replied to each and every email I was sent expressing my disgust, just so they’d see how bloody irritating it is lol. Will never order from sportchek again.

    I feel like nearly every retailer is doing this! I’ve irdered from Ulta, Sephora, j.crew, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus and EVERY order arrives in multiple shipments. Sometimes I get a box with just samples, which makes zero sense. I appreciate the free shipping and all but since this has been happening, I’ve been taking notice how much waste this really is. Our recycle and bulk garbage is picked up once a week. A lot of times, I can’t put all of these boxes that can be recycled into the recycling bin, so it has to go in the bulk garbage pick up, which is a waste.

    Ulta pisses me off, as does Sephora, with packaging. Muse, you said Lush just throws things in the box, lately it’s been like that with Ulta. Literally 20 items, like 5 lip liners, some body washes, and some other stuff, just thrown in a box with no padding or bubble wrap.

    BTW Space NK has some of the worst customer service. Ordered some sale items; one palette arrived busted; I called and was told to send pics; it’s been 4 days and nothing; I called 4 times today and NOBODY picked up the phone. Mind you nearly every thing I ordered is now even cheaper. I’m certain they will not refund me the price difference or give me the bucks/points, whatever system they have. And when I finally do get to speak to someone, the girls are pretty snotty. I think I’m done with them. Sale or not, the customer service is crap.

    this happens all the time. Backorder etc. Target, dicks’ sporting goods, costco all of them come in multiple packages

    I’m fed up with Ulta! The last 3 online orders I’ve placed there is no option of what kind of samples u would like to receive: fragrance, skincare, etc. It’s like my items were threw in a box and that was that. So disappointing. I look forward to trying new samples, that’s part of the fun.

    I also find it very annoying to constantly receive a huge box with one item. It’s a tremendous waste.

      Nordstrom sent me a big box with a makeup pencil sharpener in it. Not sure why they can’t use a padded envelope.

        The reason is because the warehouses are automated and they need boxes to run around the conveyor systems. Now if they were clever they’d get a plastic tote, put the padded envelope in the tote, run it around the conveyor then when it got to dispatch put all the padded envelopes in a larger plastic tote to provide to the shipping company…I guess they haven’t figured that out yet. In terms of shipping expenses they likely have a fixed fee per order number so it doesn’t matter how many boxes or what size (other than their expenses for the boxes and materials themselves) it’s likely the shipping company will put pressure on them to consolidate and reduce, or the shipping company will increase their rates. (Can you tell I have vented about this to a friend who is president of a distribution centre and logistics company here in Canada, lol)

    Holy moly, I’m so glad I’m not the only one. It’s almost impossible to keep track of so now I’ve devised a star system with my original orders in my inbox and then every time I get another box I go back and check what’s missing. For me the worst offenders this holiday season were Saks Off 5th (5 separate packages for 7 items!!!)… Nordstrom (4 packages for 5 items)… and Ulta was bad but not terrible in comparison. Honestly, I’m just sick of having to keep track of everything and also it’s just such a waste of packaging. Now that I know most of our recyclables don’t even get recycled I feel doubly bad supporting businesses who choose to purposely damage the environment. I’m trying a store-only approach this year and cutting down all my online orders 🙁

    Yep, my last order from Ulta came in two shipments…Ordered a set of IT Brushes and IT Brush Cleaner…Could they both have been placed in the same box, absolutely! But no, they arrived in two different boxes days apart. 🙁

    I care. Nordstrom is the same way. I do not like this way of sending my order in two or even three boxes when I ordered it all at the same time. On one occasion, they even sent me my “free gift” alone in a huge box. Not cool!

    It’s not only super annoying, it’s also really wasteful. I hate getting multiple huge boxes for one tiny item and a sample. Ulta is bad but Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom are even worse!

    I saw that some people have already mentioned target and I agree that this is so terribly annoying. I remember one time when a five item order was shipped one at a time. Five giant boxes with items like maybe one eyeliner in each. I’m glad for the safe arrival of my eyeliner but how does this all look to my husband who must think I buy five times more stuff than I actually do? Not to mention the incredible amount of trash that has been generated. I have noticed though that sometimes an option to have items shipped as one package shows up and they even offer a dollar off to do this. I haven’t seen it as of late but I wish it was always offered.

    Now, as far as packing woes go, store pick up wasn’t much better. I recently ordered 2 Chanel eyeshadow singles from Bloomingdale’s and selected store pick up. I had done store pick up for a makeup order before and was impressed that it was all boxed up like a present when I picked it up so I was appalled that my Chanel order was simply chucked into a paper bag. The associate explained that because of the holidays, they had a temporary online order pickup station which had no supplies for her. That’s why she just chucked it all into the paper bag. So, to get my box, ribbon and tissue paper, I needed to go up to the third floor customer service/gift wrap section. And here I thought they were making store pick up more convenient with a first floor station. This is an example of an idea just gone awry or not executed properly. So annoying.

    LOL that happened to me with Nordstrom. I had received my entire order of beauty products minus one vial of fragrance sample. I just figured oh well I don’t get that sample, no big deal. But, a couple of days later, lo and behold, a box showed up with just that one vial of perfume sample. What an incredible waste.
