And Claire’s Makeup Tests Positive For Asbestos Again

beauty news

If you’re a mom and your young daughter is taking her first steps into the land of makeup I imagine you’ll hit up Claire’s at some point. Claire’s always has some rather cute, fun products for girls that are just starting to evolve from Barbie’s to lipstick! Hell, I shop at Claire’s sometimes because who doesn’t want a sparkly new iPhone case!

Just a warning though if you do shop there or you shop their for a younger girl or boy in your life know that Claire’s has makeup has tested positive for asbestos again! Yup, back in December 2017 they had the same issue and recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on warned consumers not to use certain makeup sold by Claire’s after they were found to contain asbestos.

Claire’s denies the claims and has released the following statement:

“There is no evidence that any products sold by Claire’s are unsafe. The recent test results the FDA have shared with us show significant errors. Specifically, the FDA test reports have mischaracterized fibers in the products as asbestos, in direct contradiction to established EPA and USP criterion for classifying asbestos fibers. Despite our efforts to discuss these issues with the FDA, they insisted on moving forward with their release. We are disappointed that the FDA has taken this step, and we will continue to work with them to demonstrate the safety of our products.”

My motto is better safe than sorry no matter what statement they released!

Hmmm, something’s fishy for sure. This statement raises my eyebrows:

“Specifically, the FDA test reports have mischaracterized fibers in the products as asbestos, in direct contradiction to established EPA and USP criterion for classifying asbestos fibers.”

I’m suspicious of the terms used, “mischaracterized” vs “misidentified” and “classifying” vs “identifying.” To me, the way those 2 terms in this statement are used read as Claire’s isn’t denying the existence of asbestos, just the way in which the FDA is characterizing those asbestos fibers.

FDA standards are pretty darn lax compared to European standards, so if even the FDA says something is dangerous, I wouldn’t touch it with a stick.

Why would asbestos be in makeup?!?!? What function would that serve? Good grief.

it’s because of unrefined talc in cheap cosmetics. asbestos is a naturally occurring substance in talc. this is why there are lawsuits related to ovarian cancer linked to use of baby powder/talcum powder.

Yarrrrgh. Not totally surprising, though you’d think they would have cleaned up their act by through responsible buying. Also the main reason to avoid counterfeit m/u at all costs: contamination. Remember the horse urine, in, was it a Kylie counterfeit? Oy, vay, Jesus. No back alley Pat palettes, people. Full price or legitimate sale only.

i dont know how hard you are on your Iphone, but please don’t use cheap cases. The phones these days are so $$$$. I only use otterbox’s and when its time to turn my phone in for credit, the sales reps always comment on how brand new they look.

I’m not terribly hard with my phone but I’ve been known to drop it a time or two 😀 I use a Redbubble case. Their cases are quite strong!
