Maison Margiela Replica Under the Lemon Trees Is A Brand New Lemon Scented You Or Is It?
Maison Margiela Replica Under the Lemon Trees ($126) brings to mind old Love’s Fresh Lemon commercials featuring Donovan’s Wear Your Love Like Heaven. I actually don’t remember the commercial, it was a bit before my time but since Donovan plays such important role in Love’s branding (and I’m a massive Donovan fan) back in the 60s and 70s I hunted down a few videos to watch. I always like to watch vintage makeup commercials on youTube added bonus if they include Donovan’s songs!
Going into my blind buy purchase of Under the Lemon Trees Eau de Toilette I had three ideas of what it might smell like. Love’s Fresh Lemon did come to mind! It’s been years since I smelled it but of course, I remember it at CVS along with Baby Soft. I’m pretty sure I never experienced it when Dana originally created it but I do remember it have a sort of dish liquid lemony fragrance and loving it which leads me into my second, idea of what Under the Lemon Trees might smell like! I was pretty much preparing myself for a liquid hand soap type smell or maybe a Pledge Furniture Polish type of lemon! And lastly, I was wondering if this might be a bit masculine as Replica has been known to make unisex style scents along the lines of Lush Dads Garden Lemon Tree Body Spray.
It’s actually none of these three.
Maison Margiela Replica Under the Lemon Trees isn’t at all what I expected it to be. On first spray there’s a bit of a zesty lemon note but this quickly disappears. Don’t expect bright, tart lemons or lemons sweetened by sugar as this isn’t that at all. The first burst of lemon is a bit zesty but not sweet nor tart. As it settles the fragrance plays heavily on its other notes mainly those of Coriander and musk which give it a green edge.
Just as the name implies it smell as if you’re sitting under a lemon tree perhaps in some tall grass with a few flowers scattered around. You lay back in the grass and get a damp, grassy note and looking up you see the branches of a lemon tree and faintly in the background you smell the freshness of skin of those lemons. It’s a fragrance that’s green, fresh, peaceful, relaxing. There’s some faint floral note wayyyy in the background but the body of the fragrance is all green.
I think if you’re expecting full-on lemon notes you’ll be disappointed but if you want something soothing and almost spa-like this is a fragrance that might just grab you. I think I was disappointed it wasn’t more lemony but as each time I wore it, it grew on me and now suddenly it’s turned into one of my favorite scents from Replica. For an EDT it’s all a nice strong, long-wearing fragrance that doesn’t fade or disappear it lingers on for several hours and well into the next week if you mist it on your coat!
All in all, an interesting and pretty offering from Replica that’s well worth sniffing if you love this house.
