My Summer Beauty and Makeup Essentials Available at Walmart

Beauty has never been one size fits all even though sometimes it feels that way due to advertising. When I started my blog 11 plus years ago diversity in the makeup and beauty world was never a major point of interest to brands. Foundation shades were limited, models were typically cookie cutter and all of them came in one shape, sex, and race. Let’s just say things were a lot different. Change has erupted across the beauty in the last few years and all for the better. Models are more diverse and they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and sexes. It’s a new, refreshing, and different beauty community we now live in. Gone are the days when you walk into a store and can’t find the right shade of foundation because you’re too fair or too dark. Gone are the days when models are 110 pounds advertising the latest fashion. Gone are the days where women are the only ones advertising the latest blush, highlighter, or lipgloss.

Today, right now it’s now become a standard to have 30+ foundation shades to choose from so, you’ll always find just the right shade. Tess Holiday, a plus size model, graces Cosmopolitan and makes all of us that aren’t 110 pounds feel a little more comfortable in our skin. And men, are featured in a variety of makeup promotions just as readily as any woman.

It’s a new beauty frontier we are navigating through and for me it’s more exciting than ever before to be apart of that journey.

Walmart recently launched a new campaign called “Here for Every Beauty” that celebrates the over 327 different million faces that makeup America. When they approached me to partner and collaborate with them on this topic and to share some of my Summer beauty and makeup essentials I agreed happily because if nothing else I am all about beauty being FOR EVERYONE (the following is paid opportunity however, the products I’ve featured, the thoughts I’ve shared, and other opinions are solely my own). All races, all sexes, all sizes, and shapes. Beauty for me is about everyone. I’m not a model. I am not a makeup artist. I barely know how to blend my eyeshadow correctly and most days I might be walking down the street with clown cheeks thinking I look hot as hell. That’s just me. A goofy, geeky, short, chubby girl that loves makeup. I’m obviously not the ideal demographic for the beauty world but the beauty world is changing and it’s becoming a lot more acceptable for everyday people like me to be a part of it without any prejudice. It still has a way to go but we are definitely forging a new way to look at things and I love that. Everyone should be accepted, open arms, into the makeup world. I’m glad Walmart is bringing attention to diversity in beauty. It’s an important topic!

Speaking of diverse, Walmart has stepped up their makeup and beauty game. The aisles are pretty stocked tight with just about everything you need in the makeup and beauty world plus exclusives from brands like Wet n Wild and Covergirl. How much are you loving those Covergirl Her Majesty Eyeshadow Palettes which exclusively available at Walmart! I’m sure which one I love more! I purchased all of them a few weeks ago and they slowly are becoming my go to for Summer looks. Anyone try them yet?

So, as you know I’m trying to lighten up my makeup and beauty routine for Summer. I always tend to go lighter with just about everything in the Summer! I picked a few items out that will be helping me make that possible!

Jump ahead for a few more Summer Beauty and Makeup Essentials I recently hauled at Walmart.

Who rotates their skincare in the Summer? Show of hands! I do! My Winter skincare is pretty heavy and I don’t need as many of the lotions, potions, and serums I use on the daily in the Summer months. My skin is drier but I tend to get a bit oily in the Summer. Lighter skincare is def the way to go for me. From my nightly routine to my daily one, everything is lighter and less in the Summer in my skincare world. Right now my skin is sort of freaking out because my SPF contains alcohol and going into the air conditioning causes me to get a bit of flakiness on my forehead and cheeks but I’m oily around the sides of my cheeks and nose. I’ve eliminated pretty much all my regular cleansers and cleansing methods until things get under control. To keep it simple I cleanse with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser! Everyone always raves this to me and I thought maybe the formula might be a bit more gentle as I struggle through my weird flaky/combo issues. Does anyone use it?

I’ve also gone really light with my nightly routine. Typically in the Winter I apply layer after layer of product to keep my dry skin well hydrated! It also eases dullness and gives my complexion a nice bright appearance come the AM. I’m of the mentality that well hydrated skin is happy skin. But in the Summer, I really don’t need as much product. A nice, lightweight moisturizer is ideal. CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM Ultra Lightweight is perfect as my nightly moisturizer as it has a blend of ceramides and other hydrating ingredients!

Speaking of lightweight formulas anyone try the new Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50? I’ve been using this for a few months on and off from my other SPFs and I have to say I really like it. It’s lightweight, absorbs easily, and it wears well under makeup! Also, I am in love with the fact it’s under $10 bucks! It does have a very strong fragrance though so sensitive users beware!

As for my makeup I’m going lightweight and natural with that too for Summer. Who wants to wear a ton of makeup in the humidity? I’ve been doing cheek stain a lot lately! It’s my favorite way to get long lasting color on my cheeks that’s super natural and weightless in the warm weather! To amp it up a bit I use a bit of a glistening highlighter! Last year, I fell in love with Maybelline Facestudio Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter in Molten Peach! Love, love, love that shade so much! It gives my skin such a great glow and you know me I hate highlighter but this is one I adore. I decided to give Molten Gold a try out this year! I started using it over a peach cream blush and gives me a nice golden sheen! Get it! You won’t regret it!

I’m also currently obsessed with pink everything for some reason or another! I picked up Milani’s Keep It Full Nourishing Lip Plumper in Soft Rose. I purchased a bunch of these a few months ago and reviewed them but I don’t have Soft Rose. It’s quite a nice neutral, nude rose. It’s a refreshing take from the standard nude lip colors as the hint of pink gives it a nice pretty nude look with just the right amount of pink!

Two things I’m not lighting up with for the Summer, my hair care and my mascara! Give me all the mascara, all day! When I’m wearing lighter makeup I tend to wear a nice dose of mascara as I feel like it really wakes my eyes up and gives my entire complexion a nice boost. I did a raving review for L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara when it originally launched. I was prepared to be critical about it as you know me an drugstore mascara! We don’t get along! But this formula was great and gave me nice, full lashes! The waterproof version will get me nice, full lashes for Summer!

As for my hair, well, the pool does some major damage. I always feel like I’m walking around with a head of hay in the Summer as chlorine is not nice. I typically reach for a deep hair mask like Carol’s Daughter’s Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie. It smells divine and it gives my hair much needed moisture to prevent all that frizz up!

So far, those are some of my Summer essentials! I’m still rearranging and sorting through my skincare and makeup to make room for new goodies this season!

What are some of your Summer essentials?

Do share them!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I love you Muse. I have been following you all these 11 yrs!! This is the one and only beauty blog I follow. I love diversity, too.

Thayer’s alcohol free witch hazel toner with cucumber is so, so so refreshing in the summer. Is it a game changer? Not really, but it’s a nice, affordable treat any time of year and I especially appreciate it when things heat up. A new to me product I’m enjoying lately for my arms and hands and legs is the Coppertone Glow with shimmer SPF 50. It’s not as fine a shimmer as I had hoped (I was picturing the Burts Bees radiance body lotion but with SPF added), it’s tiny flecks of gold glitter, but it’s still fun and motivates me more to apply sunscreen to my body daily.

I love Thayers anything! I used to buy it from drugstore.com and absolutely adored the entire line! They used to have pre-soaked witch hazel pads (not sure if they make them anymore) which were great for travel! I was going to buy that! I also saw the new wet lotion from Jergens that does a gradual tan! It was interesting because they had it in fair/light and medium/deep. I don’t really like to tan but I liked the idea of fair/light version I thought it would be nice to use on my legs just for a bit of glow likewise for the coppertone, just for a sheen! ;D I’m going to try the coppertone! You’re right the gold makes it fun and motivates me to apply spf all over my body (which I fail to do unless I’m really going to be outside all day). Any makeup picks for Summer you’re loving?

I love this campaign, and WalMart has really impressed me with their beauty department lately. From WalMart, my summer faves are Freeman’s Detoxifying Kale + Dandelion Gel Bubble Mask. It only comes in the individual packets, not the tube. But it’s so worth it. Also, Hi-Pro-Pac’s Australian Tea Tree & Mint Oil Scalp Care Hair Masque is amazing!! So refreshing. And Carol’s Daughter’s Almond Milk leave-in spray is great for my thick, mind of it’s own hair.

From Ulta/Sephora, my favorites are Clean Blossom perfume, Pacifica Super Flower Oil (not too heavy for an oil) and Kale Water Micellar Water, and Herbivore Jasmine Green Tea Toner. For makeup, I generally stick to my HG foundation, Bare Minerals Blemish Rescue, ColourPop Super Shock Shadows, Touch in Sol Paper Pusher Mascara (the best!) and the closest lipgloss I can find lol.

I do too! The walmart by me recently did the beauty dept and it’s looking pretty snappy. I don’t shop at Walmart a lot but the new beauty aisles are def incentive to go back for some more ;-D Great picks! I have to try that tea tree and mini oil mask sounds awesome ;-D good dry hair I hope!? I never tried the Touch of Sol Mascara you got me curious ;D

I think the mask would be excellent for dry hair, it’s really moisturizing. And yes, you need to try the mascara! I usually get the mini one in a double pack with their Stretchex one. Both are great, but Paper Pusher is one of those that lengthens and separates without adding volume, so it’s like my lashes are so long and fluttery. And no flaking or smudging at all. Amazing.

These seem like such good products! I have the Maybelline Highlighter and it’s incredible

I swear by anything and everything Cera-Ve! Their basic, $14-19 a bottle (in Canadia) SPF 30 lotion is the only thing that’s ever really worked on my face. I even love how my skin feels when I use their lotions. Retinol line not amazing, but solid for the price point. I may try this other sunscreen, though, for my sad, sad pale skin.

You’re the only real makeup blog I read anymore, Muse! So glad you’re still going!

    • Isabella Muse

Cerave has gotten me out of some tricky dry skin moments so, I def trust anything they make too ;-D I was disappointed with their new HA serum! It contained alcohol le sigh! but their basic line is super great! Aw gee thank you Emily I am very flattered 🙂
