Do You Use Physical or Chemical Exfoliating Products?

Do you use physical or chemical exfoliating products? How often do you exfoliate? I’m more of a physical kind of girl myself because I’m a little unsure of myself around acids! As I’ve gotten older I’m starting to explore chemical exfoliating products more and more though. I started using the Inkey List Lactic Acid which is gentle and ideal for drier skin and I like the results so far. I’ve used Pixi’s Glow Tonic in the past but the smell became too much for me (it smells like old lady perfume) and I stopped using it. I’ve also used Resist Advanced Smoothing Treatment 10% AHA and had fantastic results.

I have to admit though I find physical exfoliating a lot easier! When I use a chemical exfoliating product I have to be careful which other products I’m combining it with. If I use a physical one there’s no such issue.

I do think that physical exfoliating products can really dry my skin out though where as physical ones I don’t experience the same reaction. I tend to exfoliate twice a week if I’m using a physical product and that’s even too much. For acids/chemicals I use them every night. I’ve sort of made a promise to myself that this year I’d start going the chemical route. I think my skin will thank me when the long, hard Winter makes an appearance!

How do you exfoliate? Do you use physical or chemical products?

How often do you use them?

What results do you experience using them?

Do share!

I’m chemical all the way. I get professional peels with my dermatologist once a month and use gentler at home peels in between if I feel like I’m getting congested. On a daily basis, I use Biologique Rechercher PIGM400 in the morning.

Sometimes, though, I just want to grab a mechanical exfoliator and scrub the heck out of my skin because it’s instant gratification. LOL!

I have found that AHA’s are generally just way to harsh for my skin. I love CosRx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. Although I rarely have any blackheads, this is the perfect level of exfoliation for my skin. I use it nightly. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve shoes away from most physical exfoliators as they are too much. I do keep Bliss Micro Magic around though. Gentle enough and makes my skin feel really smooth with not much redness. Gone are the days of using Exfolikate lol. That stuff burns like fire now.

LOL I used to love exfolikate with a passion but now, nope, can’t do it! way too harsh!

I alternate. Lately, I’ve been using Honeymoon Glow but as the cold sets in I think I will have to lay off of that. Sometimes, I’ll pick up a pumpkin scented exfoliator for a quick fix (as cuz I like pumpkins).

At home chemical. I can’t do the irritants of the physical exfoliant beyond a washcloth anymore. I like Paula’s choice AHA and BHA products and I use them as needed I guess, one to two times a week. I got my sister hooked on them too and she turned her husband on to them. They seem to work well for most people.

Chemical. Physical exfoliants just tear up my delicate skin. And I use it as needed, maybe once a month. I’m finding that less is more when it comes to my skincare. I wash my face with only water in the morning and with a gentle soap at night and an eye cream and lightweight moisturizer is all I can handle without irritating my skin. Oh And of course sunscreen!

Check it out. I know I’m repeating myself. You can read about pH dependent acids and the whole drill. When I was doing anti-aging/anti-acne, I used primarily bhas and ahas. And Clarisonic for physical. Then ahas became a problem. Then I got wicked inflammatory and had to switch up to massive centella and other inflammatory ingredients. Now, I’m Purito even more than Cosrx. So, LSS, I needed more exfoliation, added back a bunch of bha, but needed to start physical again. I think the risks are greater with physical and prefer layers of acids, thinner to thicker, like the rule of thumb. Watch out for those microtears and how sensitive to other products physical can make you. But, if you really want to take off layers like an archeologist, go for the burn with the ordinary AHA BHA peeling. Then you can use it to clean your drains…

Chemical all the way here, too. I have drier skin and the physical exfoliants are too harsh; I wish hadn’t used so much apricot scrub in my youth”I thought the pain meant it was working, not that it was damaging my skin. 🙁

P.S. I’ve read that for drier skin, even chemical exfoliants should only be used for about 3 days a week; I’ve generally found that to be a good rule of thumb for myself, or my skin starts to look a little too exfoliated!

oh my gosh yeah apricot scrub we all made that mistake girl ;-D I noticed this too! I have dry skin and it’s resilient but in the winter time I notice my skin tingles/burns a bit in the cold or when I apply skincare to me this means I’m over exfoliating!

Paula’s Choice BHA all the way! I have rosacea, I can’t tolerate anything else.

I use both! Every night I use Skyn Iceland’s Nordic Peel after cleansing with Mario Badescu’s Glycolic Gel Cleanser (super oily here!). Then once or twice a week I use Aphrodite’s Olive Oil Face Scrub – they’re a brand out of Greece, and I’ve loved everything I’ve used so far.

Since I’ve started using both methods, my breakout are much fewer and further between, so now I’m hoping they’ll start helping with some of those dark spots. I don’t have very sensitive skin, so I can’t speak to that aspect of any kind of reaction, but I’ll stick with both methods for a while – well, as long as they continue to work!

Do you find using physical and chemical scrubs is too much? I’m always scared I’ll somehow harm my skin’s barrier.

      • Mandy

So far, I haven’t had any issues – and I’ve been doing both for about two months now. I always make sure I use serum and moisturizer, and the two times a week I use the physical scrub, I add a facial oil as my final step, just to make sure I’m not going too wild with it, lol.

        • Isabella Muse

I know some experts say that exfoliating physically when using a chemical/acid is good! I’m always a little scared to do so though ;-D but knowing my dry skin it’s probably a good idea to do both ;-D

I scrub my face with a washcloth and Noxema in the shower every day and use a scrub as needed (usually less than weekly). I consider the chemical exfoliators every now and then, but then I’d have to stop with my washcloth routine, wouldn’t I? I can’t abide by that. 😛 My skin doesn’t seem to mind so far! Time will tell in 20 years if that was a mistake or not.

    • Isabella Muse

eep! be careful scrubbing with noxema! you could really do some damage 🙁
