Are You Splurging On Holiday Makeup or Waiting for After the Holidays?

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Are you splurging on any Holiday makeup or beauty goodies at the moment or are you waiting for after the Holidays to score a bigger deal? I was surprised that I didn’t spend as much as I thought I would during the Sephora Holiday Bonus Event! I decided I wanted to dedicated a bit of my Holiday spending money to trying more of the Ordinary and with the 23% Off sale it seemed like a good time to take advantage. I’ve tried some products but I decided I wanted to maybe dedicate a month or two just Ordinary products and see how it goes. So yeah, part of my Holiday budget went to that sale!

So far, I’ve been pretty good with Holiday to me from me gifting haha…! I dunno how long I’ll hold out because Black Friday is always a tempting time and I find myself doing a lot of to me from me gifts on that day or one for me and one for a gift type of thing 🙂

I’m actually not one that waits to splurge on something I want simply because I feel like after the Holidays I can’t really get what I want because it sells out or the shade I want isn’t available or the size I need is gone, etc…! I love a good sale don’t get me wrong but if I really want something I won’t wait because FOMO sets in if I miss out when it does finally go on sale. There’s also that issue of dealing with being really angry when I pay for something full price and it hangs around several months for 75% off haha…! It’s a double edge sword and win some and you lose some in the sale game.

What about you?

Are you splurging on Holiday makeup and beauty this year or are you waiting for after the Holidays to score a deal?

Do share!

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. Canadians do not get a lot of beauty bargains after the holidays.

I have bought a few holiday items at a discount – either Sephora or the Bay. 10% off is better than nothing. I ordered the new Chanel quad for myself. Only available at two locations here and anything nice sells out within a day. It reminds me of my favourite Desert one and that one is almost empty. Also bought the Dior celebration in colour last month along with the pink shimmer lipstick. Been spreading things around.

Was disappointed with the EL blockbuster train case set here. Haven’t bought one in years and was shocked to see the price difference between Canada and the US – $45 spend at Nordstrom and then $70 for the set. Here it’s $150 minimum spend and another $98 for the case. No thanks.

I spent only about $100 at the Sephora sale. I bought stuff when I got the weird discounts that would arrive in the email inbox every 2-3 months.

Canadian Black Friday is not the same as the US and our deals are not as good. I expect maybe some sort of bonus with a spend amount, or maybe 15% off. Exchange rates, and customs and shipping charges sometimes sour a deal. Very few department store items go on sale on Boxing Day. Limited to the makeup company’s website to see what is available and on sale or what Sephora needs to clear out.

By the time late January comes around the spring stuff starts to arrive. So what I didn’t buy can easily be replaced by something new.

My aunt lives in Canada and she always complains about the lack of sales! I’m always surprised you guys don’t get more deals 🙁 But you’ve done a few good hauls already I see 🙂 enjoy!

I love nail polish more than any other cosmetic. I am waiting for the black friday/cyber Monday sales since they usually offer 15-30% off. I have a list(somewhat long) already of shades I want. But Essie just released a new collection I know will sell out because it will only be at CVS so I may not wait for those. I am also patiently waiting on the Nordstrom mascara sale, maybe this weekend? Other than that not much else.

By the way, have you received any Ulta emails this week because I haven’t?

    • Isabella Muse

will there be a nordstrom mascara sale? I never noticed them doing one around the Holidays! They had one twice this year which was abnormal! I was shocked haha ;-D I have…it was all that four hour break thing which I find ridiculous! Check spam maybe?

I picked up a few holiday releases during the Sephora VIB sale and with my Ulta 20% off coupon but that’s it. The last year or 2 so many holiday sets I wanted (and bought) didn’t end up selling out and went on sale so soon after the holidays. Now I am waiting and saving my Sephora/Ulta gift cards to use on them after they go on sale – and if they sell out and I don’t get them then it just wasn’t meant to be.

Agree with you, Tracy. The past few years we were seeing a lot of holiday sets go on clearance after Christmas. I think there is SO much makeup out right now that these companies churn out all of this stuff and people can only buy so much so there is always stuff left over after Christmas. Besides, I have cut way back on my makeup purchases. Also, I’ve noticed things just go on sale in general anymore anyway. So I’m on the “not paying full price for anything anymore” bandwagon. And like you, if I want something and it’s sold out then it wasn’t mean to be…I’m done jumping through hoops for makeup…

I was going to wait until after the holidays to get this to see if it went on sale but….Laura Geller has a 40 percent off sale on palettes and kits KP40 is the code the party in a palette you talked about is 17 dollars so SPLURGE before the holidays for me on this one Great gift for the girls for 17 dollars!!!!

    • Isabella Muse

YAY! I saw those deals! I was tempted by a few sets she had ;-D 40% Off is fab!

  • StormSongs

I splurged on the mini-Jawbreaker as a birthday present to myself. I ordered it about the 2nd or 3rd, it’s been paid for but not shipped yet.

I get the whole Conspiracy and Controversy mini palettes releases and I’m sure they’re busy filling those orders.

I just may cancel my splurge if it hasn’t yet shipped and run wild at Ulta.

    • Isabella Muse

Yay! Let me know how it is! I have yet to try a JS palette. Why not get it from beautylish? They ship superrrrrrr fast!

  • TropicalChrome

I don’t know how to answer this because I have seen almost nothing that interests me from this year’s holiday releases! I’m only a BI at Sephora, and I let that coupon lapse without using it because I just couldn’t find anything I wanted. So I’ll probably be looking at the sales, seeing if anything is more interesting at a much lower price.

Since Tom Ford rarely goes on sale, I took advantage of the Sephora sale to splurge / stock up on his lipsticks, which I love. I also was able to score the latest Guerlain Goldenland palette, which was a decent price at 20% off. Other than that, I bought Christmas presents for my skin care challenged 90 year old parents – lip balms, moisturizers, Honey Saviour, and other treats.

Really hoping the Huda Mercury Retrograde palette goes on sale for Black Friday but since it’s so new I’m not sure?? Held off buying it with the Rouge sale because I knew Huda did 30% off last year. Fingers crossed!

It’s not so much that I’m deliberately not splurging, but more that there is not much catching my attention.

That being said, I am also a member of a “No/ Low Buy” group on another makeup forum. Simply explained, we set goals and limits for ourselves, as well as share effective tips and techniques to stay on budget. We share successes & challenges. Ultimately we have all become more mindful and careful consumers who love and use their beauty wardrobes.

Makeup for me had lost a lot of that “lovin’ feeling.” We have been inundated with ongoing, never ending, mediorcre, repetitious, cheap, non-innovative, boring, cash-grab releases…So when I finally splurge it must be for something super special. 😉
