My Last Makeup Purchase That Surprised Me Was……

Time to fill in the beauty blank! “My Last Makeup Purchase That Surprised Me Was….” Have you purchased something recently that you were a bit iffy on but brought it anyway and maybe it turned into a pleasant surprise or worst, maybe you thought you were going to love it and you were surprised you didn’t!

What was the last makeup purchase that surprised you?

The last purchase that purchase that surprised me was the Tati Beauty Eyeshadow Palette. I’ve watched a video or two from Tati but I’m not a big fan or anything. Nothing against Tati, I’m just not a youTube person. I’m old school and I still prefer reading blogs versus watching youTube videos.

This was a rather spontaneous purchase because I noticed a dune shade in it I really liked the looks of. Yeah, paying $48 for two shades I liked is a bit extreme but I’m always on the hunt for a perfect dune brown and this palette had one. But this palette had a lot working against it. First off, the price was high for something created by Seed Beauty (Colourpop is also by Seed Beauty and not nearly as highly priced) and secondly, it contained pressed glitters and I hate pressed glitters.

But I said screw it and I ordered it and it turned into the biggest surprise every!

Was it a bad surprise or a good one?

ALL good. I LOVE this palette. I was really expecting a Colourpop-like formula from these eyeshadows but I feel like the formula is considerably different in comparison. The mattes are so soft, so silky, and they apply like they’ve been airbrushed on my eyes.

I dunno why but I really expected to be somewhat disappointed with this purchase and it turned out to be ridiculously brilliant. It’s one of the best eyeshadow palettes I’ve come across in a really long time and well worth the near $50 price tag. I’m legit played with the idea of hauling another one when it comes back in stock because I don’t want to be without the shades in this palette. It’s a stunning palette that was really easy to work with.

The Tati Textured Neutrals Eyeshadow Palette was the last makeup purchase that I made which surprised me.

How about you?

Any good or bad makeup purchased you’ve made recently that surprised you?

I picked up the Becca Aqua Luminous foundation at TJ Maxx on a whim and I love it! $8.99 made it even better.

  • PDO

I’m not surprised that you you loved this palette. Tati is super picky with her eyeshadows so I would expect nothing less from her. There are very few reviews I trust. Yours and Tati’s are two of the few.

Getting back on topic…I think the last thing I bought that surprised me was Essie Make Me Brow brow. It’s just as good as more expensive brow gels and at like 1/10th of the price!

    • Isabella Muse

hey there! I’m flattered thank you! BIG time flattered <3! 🙂 I don't really know Tati all that much, just watched a few of her vids, but when her palette launched and I saw the images I knew I had to have it but the pressed glitters threw me a bit so wasn't sure I'd really like it. But man, it's amazing. Do you have it!? I was very impressed! Really? I have to try it because my brows are everywhere. I typically use ABH brow gel but hey cheaper is always welcome!

  • kjh

The ABH Carli surprised me, in that 3-4 different brushes were required for all the different textures. Uh, duh…but let’s hope I remembEr which ones! The Acure blue tansy oil (Ulta) was a pleasant surprise. I knew it would be good inflammation-wise, but was iffy about the oil aspect, as I’m pretty much a water-based person. Price wise, fer better than the Sunday Riley or May Lindstrom similar products.

  • Kelly

I just got the colourpop flying circus shadow, and am a bit disappointed. Quality is fine, but it pretty much just looks like I’m wearing blue glitter. Not the look I was hoping for. Not the color I was expecting from online photos. But maybe I’ll come around to it more next summer! Should have known not to by without seeing it in person first!

    • Isabella Muse

CP disappoints a lot when I go by the promo images you aren’t alone. I buy something I think I’ll love based off their swatches and pictures and it’s COMPLETELY wrong for me. I hope the shadow works out better for you! Maybe it’ll grow on you! Revisit it in a week or two sometimes it helps to stick it in a draw for a bit and re-look at it with fresh eyes 😀

Cheap-o $7.99 at TJ Maxx–BH Cosmetics Supernova Pallet. It made so many iffy shades in other pallets (expensive ones) that I had come to life (especially with a cut crease).

And even better, it blended out the warm shades in pallets which I never wear because I’m super cool toned.

Brilliant luck for a “throwaway” try out.

    • Isabella Muse

awesome ;-D always brilliant spending under $10 bucks and having it turn into something great!

  • Colleen

Muse, I would love to see your Tati palette review. I’m intrigued by the sequins row.

  • MELISSA A. YBANEZ

The last purchase that surprised me was the Glossier Futuredew, it actually does what it claims. My skin stayed dewy even under makeup which is the effect I was looking for. Unrelated question: I have so many skincare products and makeup products that I could start a beauty blog, how would I get started.

    • Isabella Muse

Interesting! I’ve been wanting to try future dew. Just start 🙂 start writing posts, taking pictures, etc 🙂 get your content up and out there for fellow makeup users and lovers to reader ;-D

  • Sara Kinn

Kinda Youtube related….I’d seen a couple of positive video reviews about the Dollar General “Believe” foundation that’s only $5. Tried it for myself and gotta say, I like it more than some $30, $40 foundations I’ve used in the past. I wasn’t expecting to like it so much!

    • MDW

The dollar store makeup has been surprisingly good. I could not find the right concealer anywhere. Found a good on for one euro at the euro store.

  • MDW

L’oreal Beauty Tubes mascara which for some ridiculous reason, is not available in Germany. Beauty Tubes is perfection with the shortest shelf life ever. Blinc must have a copyright on the word “tubing.” And Beauty Tubes was preferable to other tubing mascaras.

I only used the mascara side.

  • Kimberly

I picked up the Urban Decay Game of Thrones palette at Nordstrom Rack, and can’t stop using it! I stopped buying their eye shadows because I didn’t like the formula, but this palette is fantastic for me.

  • Dee

I purchased the Daydream Palette by Alter Ego and I’m surprised at how good it is and how much I like it. It’s under $20 and the colors are beautiful and the formula great.

  • genevieve

The last eyeshadow palette I purchased was the Pixi Beauty Reflex Light palette because it had all the bronzey gold shades I was looking for.
I love the shades, but you do have to be careful with some of the fall out – so I use a dampened brush to pick up the foiled bronze shades – which works well.
I love all the shimmers (being a real shimmer person) and found that generally the palette was more goldy than red bronze.
Love it. It was on sale too.

    Hi Isabella!
I’ve been subbed & reading you for years now. And I love that you haven’t succumbed to the IG & You Tube “guru” type beauty stuff- I love that you keep it old school legit with your blog. Lends so much credibility and authenticity that I think is so sorely lacking nowadays with monetization of vlogs, videos, IG posts and whatnot. As someone who has been in the beauty field forever (professionally since 18, so almost 2 decades- Yikes!) , its been umm. “interesting” watching this industry evolve and overwhelm itself going thru trends on what seems to be an ever increasing spin cycle. Its been so crazy watching the industry i love become so inundated and (over)saturated with and excess of brands and launches and trends and so many Social Media proclaimed influencers and gurus starting brands or collabing to capitalize on their follow count for the almighty dollar.

Its a tricky and soetimes difficult thing to speak on without concern of being attacked by those particularly involved stans or followers who will take offense and/or defend anything critical or not fawning on their chosen anointed one, you know, with the whole keyboard attack/cancel culture and all lately. But I’ve been reading you for so many years now and I think your readers are so much more mature/open minded, realistic and respectful of there being varying opinions and experiences, and the usual crew at least that I’ve observed over the years here, don’t seem to be the blind follower assassin type, so I feel okay expressing my opinion here.

Many beauty pros/actual working artists I’ve spoken to do believe that playing with/reviewing a bunch of products online is really just an individual persons controlled exposure, impression, opinion and experience, but not near the same as hard earned field experience and in depth product usage, variances & field testing with a multitude of conditions to truly evaluate quality & performance. I only mention this in case people jump to say the usual defense “But Tati is sooo credible because she has reviewed soooo many products” or “But Tati worked in the field..” yada yada. Truthfully, she worked a retail counter (not even in actual artistry lines. She did fragrance and I forget exactly ATM, but a very minimal amount of time on the sales floor before giving it up.) Sure, over the years shes tried a ton of products and given her experience i the form of reviews and tutorials, but thats generally any of us who buy something new and try it. She just filmed (monetized) it. Then you introduce the incentivization aspect… and theres the old reviewer conundrum- how genuinely authentic can a review be when theres an inherent incentive and something to gain? My point is, she has learned makeup just as so many has along with her, playing as she goes. She just portrays herself (she has taken many acting classes, from her childhood, so I will give her that- she knows how to placate to viewers -especially with the self depreciating “I can relate to you” faux outsiders vibe, playing to those more vulnerable empathetic personalities, which is actually very disingenuous once you notice it- and can be good on camera, delivering a pitch and emotion to connect) under the guise of being a guru, and lets people build up a narrative that she wont correct, that shes ever truly been an actual makeup artist. So full disclosure, as a career artist, that does bother me.
Anyways, its sad to watch SO many people taken in by her soft adtr voice optics and watching them fiercely defend someone they dont know, even when she’s been condescending, disrespectful and snooty in the beauty field. The better than thou attitude insults. But I digress. She could truly be great if everything with her wasn’t so calculating, contrived and staged or money/ego motivated. I want to root for the part of her I used to believe was sincere, down to earth and truly heart guided and based, but its just so hard now that shes crossed over to the dark side. Those that have followed & even semi kept up over the years will know what I mean, I wont go on here.
As for her palette, its a nice curation and concept, but I do hope in your review you will mention the obvious challenges and not so great aspects, of most being the fallout. Not just of the heavy glitter formula even, but the sequin and other formulations, while good in opacity, moisture and thickness (for blendability), there is a lot of fluff, fall out and dusting.
Nothing about it is truly innovative, but it is a good layout and selection. The packaging is cardboard, which at the premium pricing is disappointing. Of course, she says she meant to do that so it can be bent back like an artists palette. (*eyeroll*) No- we’re not dumb- thats because it is a lot cheaper to produce and higher profit yields.

At the end of the day. everyone knows (or really should know) its generally the same formulations selections at Seed as they have made for CP, Kylie and the many other NDA contracted companies they produce for, just with a major unjustified upcharge for the name. Of someone who isn’t even close to a Bobby Brown, NARS, Trish McEvoy, Carole Shaw, KA, Pat McG, CT, OFRA, etc, etc, etc actual industry proven and driven Artists. Heck, even Huda is more legit an actual earned her stripes artist than she.

(If I sound annoyed, I dont mean to come across as such… Ultimately I just am so over Tati claiming valor in a field she hasn’t been to battle in. In the most Notting Hill way shes just a girl (who made videos of herself trying products) in love (with herself, the fawning attention and the flow of $) asking (anyone who wont call her out and will bindly follow and contribute their $) to love her.)

…Okay, fine. I will also add that I dont think its cool of her massive use of specialty filters, editing, cosmetic procedures and the whole contrived “facade” (incl all the constant showing off of recently attained though questionable wealth- none of which she will fess up to, and has deliberately either denied or avoided when asked directly) in order to come across as some seemingly perfect person she aspires for her fans to worship, idolize and go gaga over. She’s wanted to be at Kar-Jenner level forever and put on that pedestal, and maybe she could have actually gotten to that level eventually more sincerely, actually earning and deserving it, had she just kept it humble and real and not succumbed to the dark side. Sad.
    I’ll shut up now.

      Hi Anya!

First off thank you so so much for being a reader for so long.

Secondly and most importantly I can imagine how you feel having been trained and worked in the field for so long and having influencers gain such fame and notoriety with so little training, skills, and experience. It belittles the study and hard work that true makeup artists have put into their field.

I’m sad to say I don’t have much experience about Tati’s background to discuss on this topic. I purchased her palette on a whim and I actually really liked it and did feel the formula was slightly different from Seed’s normal offers made for Colourpop. That being said though, I do understand how you feel!

And of course, you can always count on me to be brutally honest about stuff I do and don’t like. I liked the formula a lot and didn’t feel the shadows were too dusty however, some aren’t eye safe (not including the glitters) and I felt like it could have been way way better of it didn’t contain pressed glitters which are also rather cheap to produce. But I’ll def get into all that in my review when it goes live.

On that note, I want to just add the level of icon status some influencers reach is very, very confusing to me. I’m not that old however, when I see people crying over youTubers at meetups it does somewhat confuse me. I have a lot of my own fandoms that I enjoy but I can’t really relate at all to how violently some people will defend influencers. I mean, I love Chiara Ferragni but I don’t think I’m one to fawn all over her or if I met her not sure I’d break into tears in excitement. It’s just a little weird for me. Perhaps I am old lol!

And most importantly, just know that I appreciate the hard work and passion that makeup artists and people put into this field! You all have my utmost respect and admiration! What you do is truly art 🙂

Thank you for sharing your thoughts/opinion today! 🙂

Not makeup but skincare. Sunday Riley Good Genes. I know it’s just lactic acid but there is something about it that makes my skin glow. The Ordinary Lactic doesn’t compare. I pair this with PTR retinol fusion PM and sometimes throw in a Vit C product. I got this in the QVC beauty bash swag bag and my niece was nice enough to give me hers but I would only buy this with a coupon because I can’t get my head around spending $100 on a lactic acid product.

This is SUPER old but the Revlon Color Blur line was amazing. It was super creamy and matte and bold and didn’t wear off unevenly. Also won a gold medal for being a skinny stick because I haaate a bulky purse and my makeup routine hinges on how easily I can apply it at the red light before work.
