You Can Do Beauty in Lockdown What You Need to Hear Today

The last thing on our minds right now is makeup am I right? I mean if we’re honest most of us are probably roaming around our houses in PJs, eating cereal from a box, not washing our hair or shaving our legs.

I have actually never in my life had such a long break from makeup. Makeup has always been a major part of my life. When I was younger I would never consider going out of the house without my face completely on. I’d feel naked if I was sporting a bright eye look! Look back on some of my posts ten plus years ago on this blog and you’ll see that teal and turquoise eyeshadow was a major part of my eyeshadow life. Hey, this girl got the biggest anime eyes around and turquoise rocks on big brown eyes and accents those Bambi eyes I got going on. When your eyes dominate your face bolder eyeshadows are very appealing.

As I got older much of my bright, loud eyeshadow wardrobe got pushed to the side for a lot of nudes and neutrals. And that’s ok, I’m actually cool with that. As I got even older, I started getting braver and going “naked” with my look more often but that look always involved eye makeup, blush, etc…. But with lock down? Lock down has taken naked face to a new level. I’ve just never gone without makeup so long. I actually look all of 12 years old right now.

I readily admit I’ve done my entire face (including highlighter you could see from the next galaxy) just to sit on my couch for a Netflix binge. Because you know what? That’s healthy! A good routine will keep your heart light and your mind will be in a healthy place. Routines are good, try to stick through them especially if you live alone in isolation right now. Use the time to mask, use it to exfoliate, hell, use it to apply as much eyeshadow as you want. Yesterday, I did a winged eye and you guys know I don’t break out that liquid eyeliner often enough right? Because hello, I’m a klutz with liquid eyeliner. But I was flicking away with it and it made me feel pretty and it made me feel safe. I even cracked out the false lashes! GASP! OH MY GAWD!

I was looking at my profile picture I used on Tiktok last night and I had absolutely no makeup on in it and I realized most of you wouldn’t recognize me looking like that. Ironically some of the new friends I’ve made on Tiktok might not recognize me at all if they saw me on Musings of a Muse with makeup on! Fancy that? Let’s face it poorly blended eyeshadow and lots of blush are my signature look ha…! 🙂 It’s kind of weird that when we do finally venture out into the world some of what we love about makeup will be taken away from us. Someone in my comments yesterday mentioned how much she loved lipstick and how that was taken away from her a bit at this time. She’s right. Wearing a face mask is not an ideal situation for lipstick or super glossy glosses. But guess what? You can still break that bright red lipstick out and wear it around the house. Come on! You know me! I’ve totally vacuumed the house while wearing red lipstick. You can do it too!

Don’t let what’s going on right now dim your beauty world. This is going to pass. We’re going to come out of it strong humans. We’ll wear lipstick again, we’ll walk the streets without being afraid of who’s standing ahead of us or behind us, and we’ll most definitely do full faces of makeup again (fake lashes and all!).

I’m a New Yorker. I’m tough. So, if you’re not a New Yorker and need a little strength and a strong demeanor I’m shoving mine off on you today and slapping you in the butt to get up, wash your face, do your hair, and get that red lipstick on so you can load the dishwasher 🙂

I believe in you.

I’m off to find my perfect red lipstick right now. I’m counting on you to find yours.

Good luck!

Thanks, this was great to read. I haven’t worn makeup for 3 months! And I’m mourning my lippies. I was a JUNKIE! What now?? Off to bust out the eye palettes I never use..

    • Isabella Muse

Aw thanks! <3! Girl go put on that new eyeshadow palette. Wear all the shades in it ;-D Go feel beautiful!

  • Swoozy

I’ve been wearing makeup everyday. I’m not a highlighter/bronzer/baker/et al user under normal times, but I like the few moments of peace and creativity it gives me every day. Until we moved to VTCs (because my office thinks everyone with grown out roots wants to be seen?), I was doing some bright eye colors I don’t normally wear just because I could.

Native NYer, but a pansy compared to most, although viewed as an Iron Maiden now that I live elsewhere 😉

    • Isabella Muse

ha don’t worry I’m a mush too on some accounts when it comes to being a true Native NYer. I was bred here, born here, raised here but by most standards I’m a REALLY nice New Yorker ;-D I still say thank you, I’m sorry, and I hold open doors for people ;-D So yeah, non-New Yorker like in many ways and that’s ok ;-D But we all have the hidden toughness too New Yorker or not. And rock on with Iron Maiden one of my favs ;-D

I’m so happy you made this post! I don’t know if it’s just me, but I think of makeup and skincare as a form of self care. Even though a lot of us are staying in side, it doesn’t hurt to put some time aside for yourself to prepare or get ready for the day whether it’s watching netflix or eating cookies all day (me lol). Self care is especially important in times like these. It’s a great destresser too ^_^

These times are especially difficult, but we shouldn’t forget about ourselves. As a former Californian now living in Charlotte,NC I’m all about using what we have and being resourceful. So I’m definitely going to dig into my makeup stash. Thank you for the lovely post Muse <3 And much love to your previous reply to my comment about my fear of grocery shopping as an Asian American. Your compassion and grace really made my day.

    • Isabella Muse

You are not alone. I consider it self care too not to mention it really helps sooth my soul! Don’t forget to share those cookies! ;-D I think we should all dig into our makeup right now and just enjoy it! I really think it can take our mind off all the crazy and why not take care of ourselves right/ 😀 Aww <3! Please don't thank me for that! We're all family here <3! You know I got your back! That behavior hurts me so much. I hate to think of you outside in fear of what some idiot might say or god forbid do to you! 🙁 Please know I'm on your side always! <3!

  • Nanci M.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! You should declare a “Red Lipstick Day!” Your awesome blog has been a bright spot during quarantine!! Thank-you!!! Take care and stay healthy! 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

Haha sounds like a good plan to me! Everyone has to wear red lipstick and we’ll all sit around watching chick flicks ;-D Thank you Nanci! That means the world to me! You too! Be well and stay well!

I have admittedly done a full face just to take a selfie. I have also purchased numerous lipsticks during lockdown. I wear them around the house and for zoom meetings/parties.

    • Isabella Muse

hello my name is vain AF and I take selfies a lot lately. LOL! I hate selfies with a passion. I do not like looking at myself. But for some reason, during isolation, I’ve become the selfie queen. I don’t post them or anything but I have about a dozen on my phone where I’m being trying to hard to look like Jaclyn Hill but ending looking more like a duck. I haven’t been doing many zoom meetings so most of my makeup that I do is to sit around the house with but that’s ok ;D

  • Kathuy

Thank you for your post. I’m missing wearing makeup too. I put some on today because I’ll be venturing out on the essential errand to buy groceries. Woohoo. I’m a makeup junkie with so much stuff that I’ll never be able to use it all in my lifetime, yet I continue to put more on my Giftster list. It’s all I want. Go figure! 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

awww me too me too! I still do it but not as much as I would if I was going to work or out, etc…! But hey, makeup during essential runs is a MUST right? 😀 I’d need about 10,000 more faces to get through my makeup collection and I’m always shopping new but hey, I could be addicted to worst things right?

Since I still go to work often, I still wear makeup. Yes, I’m like the only one in the office, but yah know, I still want to look good. I cannot for the life of me go out looking frumpy. LOL! Most days I just wear an eye brightener and some blush (never was much of a lipstick or lipgloss kind of gal)–my usual look even before the shelter in place–but some days I will rock the full face and eye look. LOL! Yes, only one other person at work may see me, and they’re in the other department, so odds are they probably won’t see me at all, but why not!

When I’m at home, I just play with my makeup and practice some techniques that I haven’t tried before. No one will see me if I mess up. My husband often comes home to find me with two completely different looks on each half of my face. LOL!

    • Isabella Muse

I’d totally wear makeup if I was going to my office right now even alone all by myself ;-D me either. like people that walk around in pajama bottoms, slippers, and a tank, they are my heroes! I could never go out like that. I have to be neat, clean, tidy, makeup on before I head out! Ha! ;-D Cute! I call that the Temptalia! HAHA 😉 I love her for two doing eye looks in one ;D

      • Christina

Hey, it’s like Karl Lagerfield once said, “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat.” LOL! I do not leave the house in sweatpants or pajamas! I don’t even wear sweatpants when I work out. Leggings, yes, sweatpants, no! I’m also not one to wear leggings on a plane either. 🙂

Yes, Temptalia inspired me to “wear two looks on one day.”

        • Isabella Muse

I hate him lol! I’m so sorry! But he has a point 😉 LOL! I don’t even wear sweatpants at home girl! haha! Christine always cracks me up with that side eye where you see that she def has two different looks on to save time. LOVE IT ;D

The day KL died, I wrote to American Giant ‘RIP Karl. I will die in black AG sweats.’ And I will. All cotton, made in the USA, what’s not to love? (Besides the price, lol.) I used to wear ‘street wear’ and suits, but when your skin no longer tolerates denim, or any fitted garments, a solid pair of sweats rules. I grew up in the ‘wear white gloves when you go to Boston’ generation. Your polished shoes and handbag matched. You changed your gold and silver jewelry according to your outfit. Sweats do not have to be sloppy. They look hella with a bright cashmere sweater and dramatic jewelry and e/s. I do not see defeat at all, I see freedom from restriction and rigidity. Chacon a son gout, as they said in a French class.

  • Kasey

I’ve worn MAC’s Ruby Woo on a late night jog. Not intentionally, but because I forgot I put it on.

  • kjh

Hah hah. Still going to work, but to no m/u day job (beyond safe, only 3 people at different ends of the building) I wore full face, including 3 blushes. Oldest Nyx taupe draped. Ofra Rose as the main and SG Paris Skies as the shimmer topper. (And yes, AG gray sweats, lol) My shelter thing is upping my game, like cut crease and wings. To weird m/u up a notch, using palettes or products that disappointed me. Today, it was Steeletto, which I thought would be beyond Fab, and is rather meh. I waited years, and it’s about as exciting as a Kraft single plastic wrapped cheese slice.

    • Isabella Muse

I love you woke up and said f**k it I’m wearing three blushes to work today! YAY YOU!

      • kjh

Check out C’s blog for swatches on Sydney Grace blush. I don’t think Paris Skies is their best for you. But like their e/s, their blush is first rate, and Christmas in July MAY be in the works. (Summer sale) SG is a great indie to support. The selection is vast, ~Colourpop $ level, reliable. They do charitable contributions, like to victims of the horrendous CA fire that was near them. I know you’d love the SG blushes.

I still wear makeup on around the house during quarantine at least 3-4 times during the week. Not only does it perk up my mood and make me feel good and “normal” (except for those days when I want to take a break), but I have a lot of online video chat sessions for work and my internship…and want to look good and like my usual self, lol. It gives me a good reason to wear makeup around the house. Also, I still go into work one day a week, so that is another good reason to wear makeup. It’s a bummer to have to wear a mask that hides the lipstick you are wearing but once I get to work, I can take my mask off. Thanks for posting that we can still wear makeup around the house if we want to….It’s a good reminder and entirely one’s choice. Also, it can do wonders for one’s mood and morale during these times and help things feel less dreary…

    • Isabella Muse

I was doing the same now I sort of do it once or twice a week! I most def do it if I have a video call ;-D I think it’s really super healthy to keep a routine even if you aren’t working or you aren’t see anyone. Especially makeup wise. It’s all about self care! It does wonders for your mental health during this crazy time!
