I Guess Everything My Sister Told Me About the Flamingo Razor Is True….!

Hi, I’m a member of the Dollar Shave Club because I have no shame and shave my legs with men’s razors. Who needs a fancy Venus Razor when I can buy a Mach3 Razors and get the job done like a world class champion. Hey, if nothing else I’m all about truth around here! Remember, I did confess to buying men’s razors in the past.

I’m a girlie girl you know this and I love all the pink frou frou razors as much as the next girl but in reality, I get a way smoother shave from a dude’s razor. Come on, be honest with me, you know when Summer comes and Venus starts putting out peach scented razors you’re one of the first people in line to buy one of those bad boys.

My sister recently purchased a Flamingo Razor from Target and she Facetimed me a few weeks ago and she was like, “THIS DOESN’T WORK! It doesn’t have a moisturizing strip!” The first thing, that entered my head was shaving cream. This girl does not understand the use of shaving cream. She relies on those moisturizing strips like they are going to perform a miracle shave for her. I kindly explained to her, “You’re using it wrong. Even if it doesn’t have a moisturizing strip you should use shaving cream because it’ll make the glide a whole lot better.” I mean, even with the moisturizing strip, which is a nice little extra to have around, you still need shaving cream in my humblest opinion.

Fast forward a few hours later to another Facetime call, “It still isn’t working even with shaving cream!” Dude, do you not know how to shave your legs? Must I step you through these things…! She ranted nearly 30 minutes about the horror of the Flamingo Razor.

Anyway, I decided to give it a try. Flamingo recently launched at Target so, I picked one up online and gave it a go. She’s right. It sucks. I never knew how important that damn moisturizing strip was until it was gone. Flamingo’s pretty nifty in some ways. She has five blades, all of which are sharp, she’s cheap as day old chips, and she’s pretty if not basic. But she drags like a mother even with a full leg of shaving cream on. I honestly, never realized before how helpful that little moisturizing strip was. It really create a smoother glide. Flamingo has perks for sure but without that moisturizing strip it just doesn’t give me the smoothest shave in the world.

Have you tried the Flamingo Razor?

Does it work for you?

Oh god, is that why I always get nicks when I use mine. I couldn’t quite figure out why I kept cutting myself even with a new blade. I don’t use shaving cream, but i use creamy body wash that has nice slip, and I never cut myself with my husband’s razor, but I kept getting cuts with my Billie. I figured I was ultra dry at the knees. And oh my gosh, the rashes at my armpits, and I barely have hair there since I lasered them years ago. I just run a pass to catch any strays and I was still getting razor burn. LOL!

But alas, I have a few unused blades, and I can’t toss new unused stuff. I will just have to suffer through them.

    • Isabella Muse

It’s actually my bad, Flamingo not Billie ;-D Monday!!!!!!!!!!! I always seem to manage cuts with a woman’s razor but I do great with a men’s. Weird?! Oh no! Razor burn sucks!

      • Christina

Flamingo, Billie, all the same!. I have whatever you have in the picture, but in purple. I wanted it to look cut in my bathroom. Never again, never again!

        • Isabella Muse

LOL! why do we buy shit because we think it’s cute? What is wrong with us LOL!

  • yelena

I actually bought this last fall and absolutely LOVE It!
Here’s the thing tho, I’ve been trying to do a no buy for cosmetics and products, especially hair products because I have a million. and they aren’t like half used either, I buy them, wash a couple times and then never finish the bottle. So right around the time I bought this razor I also ran out of shaving cream, but I was trying to use up a bottle of conditioner…so I thought…hmm why not?
so i’ve been shaving with conditioner on my legs LOL and it sounds crazy but it works! smooth legs for days! try it! I hope it works!

    • Isabella Muse

oh my god conditioner so does work. It does sometimes clog up the blades but conditioner def is a good one!

    • Christina

You know what also works really well? The Costco Kirkland shampoo in the purple bottle. Yes, the shampoo works wonders for me!

  • Jen R

    Happy Monday, Muse!

I’m actually wondering if you’ve mixed up Flamingo and Billie? I have tried both, and I believe only Flamingo is sold at Target (and that’s the one in the picture, too). I did not like Flamingo at all, but I LOVE Billie! It’s actually the only razor I’ve used for the last two years, and I am fair with a lot of dark leg hair and have to shave daily in the summer. And with Billie, the entire area surrounding the blades is actually a moisturizing strip, and I find that for a really quick shave (ankles/pits), it is moisturizing enough to use without any additional product.

I know everyone is different, but I’ve been really pleased with Billie so far, and have saved a ton of money from when I used to use Venus.

    • Isabella Muse

I DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Obviously brain not working, no commute today. ;-D Welcome to my world. ;D In a year, Venus probably costs as much as the upkeep of a small child lol!

      • Jen R

Girl, no worries, all of our brains are mush these days!

I never seem to know what day of the week or month it is anymore, time is both impossibly slow and zipping by, and I can barely sleep through the night. Best I can do is just take one day at a time.

Glad you’re generally doing okay!! 🙂

        • Isabella Muse

Aw <3! I totally get it. I joke about not knowing the days but I def try to keep track because time is either impossibly fast or very very slow. My sleep has been good thankfully. I always recommend just laying in bed and staring at ceiling. Just meditate your thoughts away. Just take it slow. I'm good but really I'm always good because I'm just that annoying person that tries to always be positive. I try not to let things get me down. Life is too short to dwell on the bad stuff you know? Please keep yourself in a good head space <3!

      • yelena

lol i was wondering the same thing! i know the picture looks exactly like the one I bought at Target, so I knew it had to be the same thing. I just figured Billie razor was like a hip type of razor or something that I had no clue about lol.

  • Brandy

I’ve never tried the Flamingo razor due to the poor reviews, but I just got my Athena Club razor and I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. It comes in a beautiful box with a magnetic holder, and it’s definitely one of the prettiest razors I’ve ever seen. The shave is super smooth (at first I thought it wasn’t shaving anything off), but it did remove hair. The problem? I ended up having to go over the same spot several times which caused some minor irritation when I was done. That’s something that I never have to do with my normal Schick Hydro 5 men’s razor. I also had some stubble less than 24 hours later which means it’s not getting as close as my normal razor. The reviews made it seem like it was the Holy Grail of razors, but I’m not sold on it yet.

    • Isabella Muse

I have to say the Athena Club Razor was tempting. It’s such a good looking razor. Oh no that sucks! Saved me $$ because I was thinking of trying it.

      • Brandy

I think I’ve just been spoiled by the close shave that men’s razors provide that I can’t ever go back to women’s razors. Plus I get the huge pack of razors at Sams Club that last me a year so it helps reduce the cost of shaving.

        • Isabella Muse

I’m glad I’m not alone as I’ve convinced men’s razors work better!

  • Jane

Okay, now I’m never going to use Flamingo or Billie razors. But has anyone tried the Billie body wash? Or lip balms?

      • Claudia

Me too, then I saw the $9 price. I’ll pass. You should try the Pacifica lip balms…mmmmmm… specifically in Pineapple Splash, it has a nice slip and isn’t drying. And $4 and no funky taste.

  • Heather

I haven’t tried the Flamingo razor and I definitely have no intention of trying it thanks to your review, but their wax strips are pretty good! Not *great* on coarse, thick hair”it takes a couple attempts for the bikini or underarms in my experience”but it’s super effective on my legs. And given that I haaaaaaate shaving my legs, it’s worth it for me compared to the hassle of a salon or melting my own wax.

(I am not affiliated with them; I just really, really hate shaving and am happy to have a new waxing option.)

    Thanks for the warning!

    • Isabella Muse

I am really liking the wax strips too! They are pretty pain free too!

  • Mercedes Santaella-Lam

OMG! Ok, I have experienced the same, and wondered what I was doing wrong (I almost always presume at first that if something doesn’t work for me, it’s due to operator error). The first time I used it I nicked myself, and I feel like it drags, even when I’m using shaving cream. Glad to know it’s not just me!

    • Isabella Muse

I really think it’s the lack of the moisture strip! It seems to do a really piss poor job of getting a smooth shave for me! and drags horribly!

  • Rachael

I’m a Venus girl. But I buy the jumbo pack at Costco that lasts me a solid 6+ months. Actually, I don’t recall when I bought my last pack and it’s still half full so it’s a decent value.

  • Moongoddess

Am I the only one who uses Intuition? Even when the shave bar runs low I just pair it with shave gel (Skintimate). I find it’s the only razor that gives me nice smooth legs without cuts. And this is coming from on OG Daisy girl back when we had zero options AND I was a hairy beast as a kid (thank you, PCOS).

    • Isabella Muse

Daisy was horrid! LOL! That razor was a special kind of torture! I used to use Intuition! I dunno why I stopped because it is pretty good!

  • Gayla

Not only does it suck at giving a great shave, but the blades rust. even hung it on the attachment and after two shaves…..rusted blade!

  • Ash

Since middle school, eons ago, I have been using cheap hair conditioner and a four blade mens’ razor. I just upgraded to a five blade razor, but my legs (and everywhere else 😉 are super smooth and soft.

  • F1wild

I sincerely hope this doesn’t come off snarky, as it’s not meant to be…why are all you guys still shaving?? I had my legs lasered back in 2001 and haven’t touched a razor since. Silky smooth legs every single day. Best thing I ever did.

  • catazure

I feel the same way about the Billie! Dollar Shave Club will keep my business for a long time to come.

  • charlotte lo

On something that is somewhat related i just use a silkn laser removal jewel and i now shave my legs once a month or every two months. For someone with pcos this is heaven send.

  • Kynz

I had this razor and it got extremely rusty after 2 weeks and I only shaved with it twice!! I also kept it in a dry place outside my shower so it wouldn’t be constantly wet and it STILL was rusty af.

  • Michelle

I came across this literally by search flamingo razor sucks I needed some validation!!! Since I started using it my skin has also been insanely itchy, its horrible!

  • Amy

OMG I thought it was me. First time in a long while I cut my legs while shaving. I felt like I was a teenager again.

  • Jenni

I am so happy I’m not alone. I have been shaving my legs for almost 30 years and they have NEVER looked like a meat market, they do with this razor. I have tried it alone, with shaving cream, pre-shave gel, shaving oil, even hair conditioner…bloody legs EVERY.TIME.

  • Kristina

I used to LOVE DSC’s razors but then they changed the handle & blades. I like the old version better. I do really like the flamingo. It actually lasts a long time. I usually use a fresh blade for bikini areas but for legs & pits, I can use one blade for a month or more. The DSC ones cut me.
