How My Boyfriend Convinced To Go to TJ Maxx and a Love Letter for Making Me Feel Safe

Hello there.

It feels ages since we last talked. I’m very behind on comments, e-mails, tweets, etc…etc..! Aren’t I always? Won’t you forgive me? Life is starting back up in Gotham again and it’s make me a tiny little bit nervous. It feels like too many people are out. I did manage to dine out twice so far with my BF and it was a nice experience. It was outdoors, the wait staff all wore masks, as did we until our meals arrived. It feels sort of good getting back some normalcy. My heart breaks for anyone experiencing what New York did the last few months. I hope if you’re in any hard hit states that you’re ok and safe. You’ll get through this as we did in New York.

Summer also decided to sneak up on us. It’s hot, it’s humid, and you could potentially start frying eggs on the concrete. You know it’s Summer when my friend and I start exchanging texts about how miserable we are about the heat and how we can’t wait for Fall to arrive. We aren’t Summer people.

Today’s love letter goes out to TJ Maxx.

I went to TJ Maxx a few days ago. I swear it was all very, very quick, safe, and it was me dashing in and out the door in a twenty minute supermarket sweep sprint. I tried really hard to convince my boyfriend to come in with me because I wanted to snag onto his belt and hide behind him. He’s the bestest human shield ever. Tall, lean, perfect for hiding behind! But he forced me to do it myself. He said I needed to be stronger and start doing normal things again. We sat in the car in front of the stores for 10 minutes while he explained to me why he couldn’t go inside with me and how he wouldn’t always be around to hold my hand as things start to re-open again (he’s right because he had to fly back to CA this week for work which made me hyperventilate). And I realized he’s right! I need to stop letting this dumb virus get the best of me. I think the last few months I’ve been living in a bubble as I didn’t really have to go out all that much (I’ve never stayed inside this long in all my life). Yay Amazon Fresh (when it was available)! Yay Postmates! Yay Instacart!

I’ve never experienced any feelings of anxiety or being paranoid before but man, this virus has really gotten a hold of me. I swear I watch way too much news. He also drove me to Nordy’s but he couldn’t convince me to be brave for that one because it was packed with people. I got out of the car, shut the door, and walked up to the door, looked inside, and ran back to the car really, really fast. He proceeded to tell me it was fine and he was proud that I did TJ all by myself. Little did he know the TJ Maxx experience was kind of awesome and I actually didn’t need to be all that brave.

First off, TJ is limiting who can go inside the store. Yay! My store is pretty large but they still only let 70 people in at a time. That was great because it felt like I wasn’t bumping into anyone as I browsed. Secondly, they were cleaning all the carts. I ran in and out within 15 minutes so I didn’t need a cart but I was happy to see them cleaning the carts off with each person that used one. Lastly and really cool was the fact they had dividers up at each register which really made me feel safe. I dunno if this will do anything at preventing the virus but I just appreciated no one was breathing down my back as I paid.

A lot of love goes out to TJ Maxx for making my first shopping experience since the COVID-19 outbreak a good one. New York was the hottest spot for COVID-19 when this started three months ago. Our state was the epicenter for the disease and compared to Italy in terms of cases. I think I speak for all New Yorkers when I say that feeling safe is a really important thing when out and about.

No matter where you are in the world right please be safe. I hope your shopping experiences are good ones that make you feel secure and comfortable!

OMG Musey! That was so sweet! He’s right! Don’t let COVID ruin your life!

  • Andi

Hey! I went too! My store was great! We didn’t have those dividers but they limited who was allowed in!

  • Nancy

We aren’t a hard hit state over here but I’ve been reading the horror show that is New York and you’re brave for going! Good job!

  • Jen R

I’m so glad you were able to get out a little! Unfortunately I’m high risk so I’m not even allowed to eat outside at a restaurant right now, but I did go to my neighborhood farmer’s market last weekend for the first time in three months, and I felt okay. I also went into a CVS to pick up a prescription, and it was the first time I had been inside a building other than my house or my doctor’s office since March! Very surreal. Really hoping for a vaccine by the end of the year so I can actually get back to going places.

You and your bf take care and stay safe!!

    • Isabella Muse

Oh no Jen I’m so sorry sweetie <3! The farmer's market that's near me upstate is really taking it seriously! All the stalls are SUPER spaced apart. I sure hope it happens soon jen! Just please be careful <3! Thank you! We will!

    • MelodyJ

Don’t be the guinea pig for the first vaccine like another poster said they are pushing this too fast.

  • Joyce B.

My hubby and I have gone out to lunch a few times but we’re cutting back now that Florida’s rates are skyrocketing. I have not ventured out to a store, so yay for you! You go girl! I’m glad you had a good experience.

    • Isabella Muse

Joyce be careful! Florida, Texas, etc are scary right now!

  • Mary Brenner

Ok. Turn off the news. OFF. They aren’t helping with the constant fear and panic they stir up every day.. Do not let this virus rule your world… don’t be afraid to go out life has to carry on and we need to learn that we are going to have to live with it not in fear of it. I refuse to live I. Fear and I’m
A nurse as you know I’ve seen the worst of it and the best of it. Frankly I’m sick of it. My county is still locked down I’d love to go out to eat. As for a vaccine you couldn’t pay me to get one as they are rushing it to market .. We need to realize that this is a virus it will always be around a vaccine will help it is not a miracle cure that people think it will be. Take it one day at a time. This too shall pass. We will be Ok

    • Isabella Muse

<3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Mary you're always the voice of reason!

      • Mary Brenner

Of course girl!!!. I want to start feeling better! Get out there and enjoy yourself (safely of course)❤️❤️❤️❤️

    • MelodyJ

I agree on the vaccine, They are rushing that way too fast. There is a lot of money involved and I wouldn’t put it past anyone to cut corners.

  • Gina

Let me tell you my experience with all of this (I’m sorry this is going to be long).
I suffer from allergies, have sinusitis and other respiratory problems, but since all of this started I had to go out just to buy groceries (I live with my mom, but in february she started with depression) so I have to accept that at first I was just kind of freaked out. If I heard someone sneeze or cough I got paranoid and very nervous and just wanted to run from the store.

But after this months had passed I learned to control my fear because if I heard someone sneeze I just thought “well, maybe he/she has allergies just like I have them”, if someone cough “well, maybe he/she was chocking with their saliva” because we can still get sick from other deseases I mean, not everything is corona (and I laughed because the other day a cousin posted in facebook “So.. do we still can get regular sick, or everything is corona?” and I’m just like “well, that’s TRUE”.

My boyfriend just got sick and he was really, like REALLY afraid and paranoid that he got the virus (he doesn’t do home office). His head, throat and chest hurts, he has problems to breathe and coughs when he does deeply breathes. So I told him that maybe he had just some respiratory problems but he was all “no no, it’s the virus! I tell you it’s the virus and I’m so afraid!!” so he went to a clinic and told him “well.. you don’t have the symptoms, but you kind of have them… (?)” and gave him medicine for pain and for the flu, and I told him that he didn’t have the flu!! he just had respiratory problems and needed another kind of medicine. So this monday went to another doctor and guess what? Bronquitis!! And FINALLY got the right medicine. He is always a very strong and brave man, it’s kind of difficult to know if she’s suffering or in pain, but this time he just couldn’t hide it.

What you can do is do things slowly. When I go out I wear a cap, a plastic mask, a hoodie to really cover my hair (even though I just cut it really short), my mouth mask and gloves. When I arrive home I take off my hoodie and jeans (the gloves goes to a trash can that we have outside), put them in a plastic bag that only says “STREET CLOTHES” and to the washer they go, then I take a bath and that’s it, I feel better 🙂

Everyone reacts different ways, but we can’t live and let fear and anxiety control us. Just remember to do baby steps, if you feel insecure around to much people then don’t enter the store or go very early so you can go out fast (I do this sometimes). Drink lots of water, eat a lot of vitamin C, exercise and little by little try to return to your normal life 🙂

    Sending lots of love!
And I’m very sorry for my kind of bad english :’D

    • Isabella Muse

It’s ok to be long! I enjoyed reading this Gina! I’m so sorry to hear about your mom I sure hope she is better! I’m the same btw….! When someone coughs or sneezes I am literally turning around and headed far away in the other direction. But you’re right it could just be allergies, or a smoker cough, or just a throat clearing and here I am freaking out about. I was watching some stuff this morning and they said you would need to talk to someone for 10 hours straight for an actual transmission to occur. So I guess we are all overeating a little bit. Your poor BF! oh my god! Poor thing! I totally totally get it because I’d feel the same way if that happened to me. It’s scary to get sick right now as automatically we are all OMG I have Corona! What a shame that we are all so scared like that! I wear my gloves, two masks, and I wear a hoodie too! I also put on my glasses. I dunno why but my glasses make me feel safer!? It all comes off as soon as I step into the mudroom! We went when it was closing almost so not a ton of people were there. That made me feel safer! I am def taking good care of myself. My normal routine has changed very little aside from working at home. I wake up same time daily, I workout same time daily, take my vitamins, etc…! I also try to get eight hours of sleep if possible. Thank you Gina your comment made me feel good 🙂 and your English is perfect!

      • Gina

Thank you!! Sometimes I know I write things wrong, but I’m trying!! <3

Another thing I do (I forgot to mention it) when I return home I clean my glasses with a little bit of alcohol and if I take my phone I clean it too. Wash my keys with a little bit of dish soap and I think that's it.

My mom it's better now 🙂 what we had to do was.. no news. She just watch the weather and then turn it off, because to be listening the same things over and over and over again get her very nervous and gets anxiety (my left hand it's a chaos right now… it's all red, rough, and it's very itchy, even though I put cream on it hasn't help at all 🙁 all because the antibacterial and me scratching it every time I have anxiety, that's why I prefer water and soap). She hasn't gone out since february, and she needs to do some blood tests, but she's just so afraid right now that we haven't gone to do them. I hope she would want to go this monday because she really need those tests

        • Isabella Muse

You did great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 I do the same with my phone too! I clean it with a lysol wipe and let it dry! I don’t put it near my ear anymore either! I just do speaker or facetime people because it makes me feel a bit safer! I’m so glad your mom is better! I think turning off the news does a world of good for anyone! I had the same problem when all this started. The hand soap was really giving me dry skin! I bled at one point! Just be sure to moisturize well after each washing and it helps a lot! Def see if she will go especially if she needs them! It’s important she take care of her health even though we are in scary times <3! Where are you from? Is it bad in your area?

          • Gina

I have tried a lot of hand creams, even medical creams but it still itchy and dry 🙁
I’m from Monterrey, México! 🙂 I really don’t how good or bad things are mostly because sometimes the news say one thing and then in another channel say a very different thing. Some people wears masks, while others sadly don’t do it.

Some stores are being very hygenic, but others aren’t. Same with restaurants.
I have noticed that from some years, people it’s being very selfish. Even though every single day you see in the news “if you don’t need to go out, then don’t!”, “use your mask and wash your hands!” people just don’t do it :c

          • Isabella Muse

Oooo nooo totally been there sorry girl! 🙁 I know! Same here same here! The news is so misinformed! And same situation with masks. Most people do wear them but some people don’t! Which I think is selfish! I agree 100%! If not for themselves at least think of the elder!

          • jill

darlin, you can come on down here to sunny south florida and see me any time you want! i’m lookin’ at the atlantic ocean right across the street!

but i know you don’t like the hot weather, so here’s what we’ll do: sooner or later, i’ll be back in NY. i actually live in FL but i relocated temporarily to beacon last year in february and stayed til september. my lovely daughter and her lovely spouse live there and i joined their little family for most of the year. they, beacon and bath & body works actually saved my life last year. it was cool that i met YOU while all that was going on! but i digress. my point is that at some point, i’ll be back to visit and i will be CERTAIN to let you know when i’m coming. how’s that? i would lurve it!!!

ahhhh, something fun to look forward to!

  • Christina

Good for you, Muse! Taking it slow is the way to go when you have anxiety. The way I see it, public spaces are extra clean right now as things start to reopen since everyone is still nervous. No better time than now while things haven’t laxed too much.

I’m sure your boyfriend will be fine back in Cali! Bay Area, right? We’re still pretty strict here, and everyone is pretty good at maintaining protocols. Plus, NY was hit harder than us.

I’ve only gone out to each and haven’t ventured to Nordstrom because I don’t want to wait in line for a couple of hours just to get inside. That would be a waste of my time and takes away from the enjoyment.

    • Isabella Muse

Hey you! My fav girl on the planet for Bay news ;-D hehe! thanks that makes me feel a lot better. He’ll be back soon but I really got nervous when he left and it was fine when he did but news started ramping up this week about CA and I got worried all over again. We have a quarantine in place for NY now so when he does come back he’s going to be locked up for two weeks :-/ But hey, gotta be safe! Me either. Thank god no lines! If I saw lines I’d prob run! In twenty minutes I browsed, snagged two items, waited in line, and was out the door. He told me that I should do my best to get out there and get back to being normal as much as possible because come Winter/Fall that may be taken away from me again. And he’s right. We do need to stop being so scared not to mention we might just be back to this in the Fall/Winter 🙁 I feel so sad we missed each the last time I was in CA because now with all this who knows when we’ll meet! 🙁 Soon I hope! Promise we’ll do it? 🙂

      • Christina

Definitely will meet when we can travel somewhat normally again. My brother in law lives in NY, so what better excuse? LOL!

Yah, enjoy it because being out and just walking around definitely does wonders for your mental health, even if you don’t go into stores.

        • Isabella Muse

You promised me a trip to NY when it gets better ;-D <3!!!!!!!!!!! I agree! Just walking or even driving around feels amazing!

      • Mary Brenner

Muse. Please don’t worry about the unknown, just try and enjoy things in the moment. I’m so weary of this whole thing , but sadly the fact is this will be with us for a long while certainly we as smart humans. Can adapt to that way of thinking and keep moving forward slowly and smartly and with proper precautions. I see so much fear and paranoid behavior now and it makes me sad. This is not forever and it’s not the new normal it’s a glitch (ok a big glitch) in the thing we call life. The world cannot survive locked down and believe it or not in the not too distant future we will look back at all of this insanity and go “can you believe we lived thru that bullshit?” I personally can’t wait. Hang in there and live life to the fullest.

Hahahaha, TJX Cos! I looked online at home goods, got zero where. Online said not open, then a friend told me she had been there that day. WTF? Now, I really need to go there or BB &B, because I had an epic laundry fail. Washed 2 pillows fine, but they exploded in the drier as if I had assassinated all the eiders in the North Atlantic. Seriously, as funny as the first explosion was, the clean up took ~8 hours and you cough like the real disease. Now I have to replace the pillows at the cost of a car payment! I think the TJXs wanted to get everything really safe and protected before opening, and they did. Last weekend, I quit my night job, after nine years. With the ‘reopening’ the customers started to insist on not wearing masks and taking more than their allotment of necessities. District mgr’s response was Let them not wear them. Do not ask them. They can have whatever they want.’ Oh, not on my watch. I I wrote a scathing letter of resignation, replete with state mandates attached and statistics. Said it was irresponsible. ‘I am not willing to work in a setting that values sales over staff health and violates state mandates.

    • Isabella Muse

GOOD FOR YOU! You should be safe when you’re working and that includes customers wear a damn mask! It’s selfish of them to not want too!

      • Mary Brenner

On the mask thing………don’t kill me or come for me but some people have legitimate medical conditions that prevent them
From wearing a mask and you can’t tell by looking at them. Please don’t assume anyone not wearing a mask is a selfish douche. They don’t have to advertise if they have an issue.

        • Isabella Muse

Oh I can totally understand that! But there are a lot of perfectly healthy young people walking around without!

        • kjh

And the customers are always asked if they have a medical condition. And they do not have to prove it, just state it. I know HIIPA; I’ve been in allied health for >40 years, with a psych (ed, not condition, lol) background. I truly do know a douche from a person who is actually potentially impacted by the disease. Mind you, people were cooperative and behaviorally approprIate until reopening. At the Mexican restaurant a few doors down, they have opened in the parking lot with umbrellas, distancing, and staff masked/gloved. Great! Enjoy. But a thunderstorm with lightening strikes and impending hail started, and most patrons sat there under their umbrellas with metal poles, their feet on the wet and flooding pavement. People are on their last nerve and being senseless. I’m 71 with multiple immune issues; my coworker (55) has severe COPD and heart problems. Each of us could likely be excused by MD note, but, protect yourself! most HS folk are behaving as summer teens are wont to do, hanging on each other, and the rest is too X rated. To have the Covid rates crank up because someone wants an extra toilet paper and screeches in your face, to have people throw coins or product at you, when they don’t get what they want…that’s entitlement and spoiled behavior. I’m sick of being abused. We help people who need walkers, carry their stuff to the car, call them by their names, and are friendly, pleasant, and helpful. Only a few customers per day rant about and disregard the restrictions,
but they are state mandates. Many of us know the medical conditions of the customers, as they confide in some of our staff. My response: stay home and let someone else do it for you. What do you need? We can drop it by your house, if you wish. “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!” Albert Finney, Network

  • Robin

You go girl!!! Proud of you!
I’m in NC and working from home which I love. I’ve been out once to pick something up from Walmart to drop off something for my parents. Other than that, I’ve been home. I do instacart for groceries and watch church via online. I’m an introvert so I’m in happy hermit mode right now. lol I did have to take my dog Jake to the vet for an ear infection. It was curbside drop off which was interesting. You park in the parking lot. Every other parking space is closed off. When you park, there’s a sign with a color on it and the phone number to their office. You call and tell them what color you are and they check you in. Then a vet tech comes out, gets info and your pet. They examined Jake and the Vet called me to let me know it was an ear infection, med he would be on (basically everything they would tell me in the office). Vet tech brings Jake back to my car, swiped my debit card and emails me the receipt. 🙂

I don’t feel anxious about the virus. My boss and my boss’s boss had it. Boss is in her early 40s and was hospitalized for three days. They were worried about blood clots; had to take anti clotting med a bit. Boss’s Boss is in his 60s and was hospitalized for a week. He lives in a different state. Both have completely recovered.

  • Alona

Tj ‘s is open in NYC? I keep looking online and it only shows NJ.

    • Isabella Muse

I traveled out of Manhattan earlier this week to head home. Upper state they are indeed open! Manhattan likely not yet!

  • Agona

Anyone who doesn’t think the medical community isn’t strained right now hasn’t been turned away and sent on a scavenger hunt for about an hour, and then sat on going on 2 hours to be seen at Dental for tooth pain…Hoping to get seen today. And maybe get bloodwork done if I don’t get turned away (again) at the doc’s.

  • Shannon

Yay, you! I went to the Maxx this week for the first time since March. My Maxx here in TN is taking the same precautions as yours . My disappointment was that many shelves were empty. I have never seen mine so low in stock.

    • Isabella Muse

Oh my gosh likewise! The shelves were completely empty! I know they always have the summer clearance thingy but this was abnormally low stock! I assume everyone got to the good stuff before me lol! Maybe they need more time to get trucks in with new goodies!

  • Donna

I love TJM and Marshalls!!!! I buy a lot of my beauty products there!

  • jill

isabella, you are just so darn cute because you are just so darn REAL. that’s why i like you so much! so few real people left in this world.

you’re such a breath of fresh air. thank you.

    • Isabella Muse

AWWW thanks Jill! I’m still so sad you aren’t at Bath & Body Works anymore! I was planning on visiting your store when it opened and you’re not there now booooo! Thank you for being so lovely! <3!

  • Dee

What a great BF you have! So glad he took you and that you were able to go in. Muse, I refuse to go anywhere that is packed so dont’ blame you for not going into Nordys.

  • Diana

Isabella, thank you so much for this very real post . I am feeling exactly like this too! I have autoimmune issues and bad sinuses and to me, it’s not worth risking things yet. CT is in reopening phases now too (hi neighbor!). My neighbors are going to the gym this week and invited me. I can’t. I just cant do it. Your boyfriend is right (and a great bf!) about anxiety narrowing your world so much. Continue to stay guarded, all in the right time, you started steps today your way you control you..the non mask people you can’t I’ve learned. They are rebellious idk why. Noone likes wearing it, it’s out of kindness&caring community.

  • Jennifer

Oh my god your boyfriend deserves the biggest hug. As a fellow OH GOD NO trending person, it can be so hard for the people around me to know when I need hand holding or when I need a gentle push. It sounds like he handled things just right <3

  • MelodyJ

We have been going to grocery, drug and big box stores the whole time but, only when needed. My brother and mother went to the barber and hair salon when reopened safety protocols in both places. My brother also went to the gym and a restaurant at a time when many aren’t there in normal situations anyway. We went to Shoe Carnival they had the doors opened for fresh air and limited number of customers. Barnes & Noble limited number of customers with open doors and if you don’t want the products you handle put them on a front table and they leave it there for a certain amount of days. The local library asks questions and takes your temperature before entering. Also when books are returned they sit them in a room for a few weeks.

Family reunion cancelled we weren’t going anyway to many high risk family members and it’s in a state where the numbers are still rising.

We are entering Phase 3 in a few days but I’m still would not want go to salons for hair or nails, gyms restaurants and churches. Although theme parks are mostly outside a few years ago me and a few other people in line for a ride got thrown up on.

  • Staci

My state had close to the least number of cases. That’s fortunate and unfortunate. Because we haven’t been hit hard, so many people here refuse to believe we need to make changes. Our case numbers are rising. I don’t think these people are going to make the necessary changes to minimize the spread until we’ve had enough sick people and deaths. Deaths in far off places like NY aren’t going to sway them. It’s going to have to be deaths here. I feel less safe going out than I did months ago.
