I’ve asked myself how I could do more when it comes to the Black Loves Matters Movement and sometimes the answer is actually really simple. Buy more from black owned businesses! I already support a lot of different black owned beauty businesses when it comes to hair care. Having long, wavy, frizzy, and drier hair I’ve always found comfort for my locks in brands like Carol’s Daughter, Shea Moisture, Mane Choice, and many others.

I’ve complied a list of a few brands I like and are easily available at Ulta! Supporting these businesses goes a long way at diversifying our economy and bringing more attention to black beauty brands!

The Mane Choice
Truly one of my favorite hair brands! It works so well for my long, wavy hair! Any of the leave-in conditioners are great but my fav is Prickly Pear Paradise Leave-In Conditioning Cream which has a light, creamy, quick to absorb formula. It leaves my hair shiny, well hydrated, and smelling beautiful!

Mixed Chicks
Not only stocked at Ulta but also, at your local target, the Mixed Chicks is a brand owned by Wendi Levy Kaaya and Kim Etheredge who struggled finding products that work for their hair. If you have curls or waves this is a good brand to explore! I got into this brand when Target started carrying it in stores. All their products smell amazing but most importantly work to tame my frizz and dryness making my waves look slick and smooth! Their Leave-In Conditioner is one of my favs!

Uoma Beauty
You might think Fenty Beauty when it comes to a wide shade range but Uoma Beauty got you covered too offering their foundation in 51 shades! Their diverse line of makeup caters to all skin tones. This brain has been on my radar for a while! I have the Stay Woke Luminous Brightening Concealer in my to be reviewed pile! I’m eager to try it but haven’t had the time to dive into it yet. Have you tried it? Do share!

Shea Moisture
A lot of people don’t know this but Richelieu Dennis purchased Madam C.J. Walker’s mansion, Villa Lewaro, in Irvington which is very close to where I actually live. Fun fact of the day there! The purchase was made in 2018 and he has plans to make the mansion into a Think Tank for young, black entrepreneurs. He’s also one of the founders of the very well known Shea Moisture hair care line! A line most of us are very, very familiar with! If you have curly or wavy hair I bet you have at least one Shea Moisture product in your hair care arsenal! I know I have several. It’s a line that works well for my drier, wavy hair. The Coconut Hibiscus line is life for my hair!

Flora & Curl
Newest obsession? Flora & Curl! They recently launched at Ulta and I’m loving a lot of their products. I recently tried the Flower Garden Hair Butter Concentrate and that stuff is freaking amazing to create fuller, lusher, well hydrated curls! It works a treat if you do braids or pigtails as well! I’ll be reviewing some of their items soon so stay tuned!

Beauty Bakerie
You gotta a love a brand called Beauty Bakerie right? I fell in love with them when I purchased the Coffee & Cocoa Bronzer Palette. It’s a multitasking palette with shades that can be used as bronzer, blush, or eyeshadow! I use the shades to create a sultry eye look! Their offerings are not only awesome formula wise but the cute bakery theme really gets me!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Hello Isabella,
Thanks for this list and post! This is a great start and excellent way to increase support for black owned businesses. It is also a good idea to purchase directly from the companies websites so that a larger percentage is put back into the business. A lot of smaller black owned brands could use support in that way 🙂
Another good brand that you might like to try for hair care is Alikay Naturals.

THANKS! I’m purchasing a few items now. Do these all smell as good as they sound!? 😀

          • Isabella Muse

Leyota you created a monster! My cart is loaded with all sorts of stuff lol! I need your advise on some of it. How are the body creams? Also, the creme brulee stuff does it smell as yummy as it sounds? 😀

I went to High school in Irvington and used to pass the Madame CJ Walker house every day on the bus to school. I’m so excited they are finally doing something with her house after its been left empty for decades. I think the Think Tank is a beautiful idea to honor such a brilliant woman.

Thank you so much for mentioning that in this post!

    • Isabella Muse

Oh my gosh small world ;-D Where’d you go to school? Private or Public? Agreed! It was part of the historical society for a long time but the finally released it for sale!

      • Hana

I went to the Public High school in Irvington! I was from Tarrytown and got bused in. I don’t suppose you are also an Irvington grad?!

Since you are a local you might already know but if you walk on the aqueduct path in Irvington you pass by the back of the Estate and get a great view of the back garden areas. Its truly a breath taking building.

That’s awesome!! I’m not an Irvington grad but do frequent Main street for good foods ;-D haha! Also, used to go to the Yoga Studio there. My main home is located in Sleepy Hollow. I do! I take a morning and evening walk daily when I am staying in that house. I also tend to walk through Lyndhurst as well! Have you taken a tour? Several years ago the house was open for tours. The pool is stunning! Have you been to Sunnyside (I imagine you on a school trip as hey, Irvington how could you not) It’s not as grandiose as Villa Lewaro but it’s charming inside! I can see myself living happily there 😀 (but the train would drive me INSANE haha!).

That is so cool! i have been following your blog since Highschool back when i still lived with my parents in Tarrytown. I had no idea you were so local to me!

We used to live right across the street from Lyndhurst so i used to go play there anytime we had a good snowstorm or when the crafts fair was in town. I sadly never made it to Sunnyside as i only moved to Tarrytown around middle school but my little sister went with her whole grade back in elementary school and loved it! I did however go to all of Sleep Hollows Historic sights especially at Halloween time. Philipsburg manor in your amazing town was my personal favorite.

          • Isabella Muse

FUNNY! Where do you live now? They still have the craft fair and of course, the flower show and they haul out Helen and Ann’s clothes from time to time and slap them in the mansion for everyone to gawk at! haha I dunno how they haven’t fallen apart yet! I’m actually a huge donator to Lyndhurst. It’s one of my favorite places! The preservation donations are small compared to the joy that place brings me. We go to all the fun Halloween stuff in the Fall. Horseman’s Hollow at Philipsburg Manor is def a must ;-D I hope you’ve been if not you need to come back. I’m like so shocked you haven’t been to Sunnyside ;-D I feel like a visit is mandatory for gradation credit in Irvington! “Didn’t go to Sunnyside? Sorry you can’t graduate!” ;-D It’s actually a really nice day trip especially in the Fall when the leaves start changing but go early. Sometimes the winds are so strong off the Hudson they can lift you up!

Hi..can i use the Mane products for my straight hair? I wish my hair was wavy…:( It is so limp and dry and lacking volume. 🙁

    • Isabella Muse

Mane is mostly for wavy, textured, or tighter curls. You can email them and ask! They might be able to recommend you the best product for straight hair 😀
