There Weren’t A Lot of Major Makeup Trends In 2020 But Here’s One That Should Go Away

2020 will go down in history as the year we all embraced self care and letting our skin breath again! We all scooped as much skincare as we could get our hands on and hunkered down in front of our desks wearing the most moisturizing of sheet masks.

I have and always will be a skincare junkie so taking care of my skin and indulging it in a variety of products isn’t really a new normal for me. If I’m not wearing makeup I look quite young. Combined with my larger brown eyes I end up looking like a little chibi. I’d much rather wear makeup than go completely bare faced. 2020 though saw many days where I wasn’t in my normal full face of makeup and most people I’ve talked to or know pretty much said, “Screw it! I’m home all day why bother with makeup?”

That makes sense! If you’re home and no one is seeing you why bother with makeup? I took sanctuary in my own collection. Doing my face everyday made me feel normal when I was anxious or paranoid about the pandemic. I felt my best when I was wearing red lipstick while waxing my floors. Sorry but makeup just felt normal to me in the complete and utter chaos we experienced back in April and now more than ever I really take comfort in it.

That doesn’t mean I’m not enjoying all the self care launches lately. I love everyone is really into taking good care of their skin lately. I love that people finally realized that good skin is the first step in makeup looking it’s best! I also love that everyone finally woke up and realized they don’t need a fully contoured face.

So, the fact of the matter is 2020 did not really give us a bunch of makeup trends but it did teach us to take better care of our skin.

However, there is one makeup trend that needs to be buried deep within the surface of the earth never to see the light of day again.

Glitter freaking eyeshadow.

Today MAC launched their Biobrilliant Glitter Eyeshadow Palette and I kid you not I slammed my head on the desk. Please stop. No one wants glitter eyeshadow or at least I don’t want it. I swear if I see one more Colourpop Eyeshadow Palette that’s made up of 30% glitter eyeshadow I may just quit makeup completely and go hide under the bed.

No more glitterrrrrrrr!

I’m tired of glitter!

Just do a nice shimmery eyeshadow stop trying to ruin my vision with your chunky glittery eyeshadows.

Glitter eyeshadow is a trend that just needs to go away and never come back.

Is glitter eyeshadow a trend you want gone or do you have another makeup trend that you want axed in 2021?

I KNEW where you were going with this and I completely agree! Did you know glitter is not even supposed to be put on your eye?

    • Isabella Muse

lol! I’m glad someone is out there knowing my exact thoughts ;-D Depends on the glitter but most of it is NOT safe for eye use which drivers me up a walllllllllllllllll! They do all these glitter palettes and make tiny little itty bitty warnings on the back that say not meant for immediate eye use or some such non sense. It just makes me rage!

  • Mary B.

Yes, I wish glitter eyeshadow would go away too! And stencilled brows, ugh. Die already. Your eyebrows are naturally fab, wish mine were that thick but they’re OK and I’ve quit using heavy brow products.

Also that straight-on photo of you is gorgeous. I wish you’d do more/different photo angles in your swatches and lose the headband. You have such beautiful hair I don’t know why you want to hide it. Take a chance in 2021 and try a new look, it could be fun! 😀

    • Isabella Muse

Absolutely agreed! Def need to do away with over brow anything and glitter has to gooooooooooo! Aw thanks. I don’t really hide, I just do my makeup before work and I like keeping my hair out of my face and that’s the image that pops up on my blog 😀 Me, in his pic, without makeup, hair down, always feels a bit weird for me. I tend to like to keep my hair back and in a bun and have makeup on! Makes me feel more normal and older when I do ;-D

      • Mary B.

We get older soon enough! Look young for as long as you can. Just would like to see a fresh look on your blog and all the others, few though they may be, that I read. New year, new look, blah blah blah. Easy to say & hard to do, I know.

        • Isabella Muse

aw it’s always hard to break old habits. I’ve been doing the same looks for years! I’m not makeup artist or a good photographer for that matter ;-D

  • Violet

Girl, you’re a poster child for good skincare!!! It amazes me how makeup transforms you from looking like a beautiful 13 yr old to a gorgeous adult.
I never understood the glitter trend cos it seems so childish. It’s fine for fun holiday parties and entertainers, but not for everyday wear. I’m 60 yrs young, but 2 years ago, an Ulta SA insisted that I could pull off glitter eyeshadow! She begged to let her do my eyes & since I was heading home next, I agreed. Omg, it was horrible! And there was fallout all over my face! I was so embarrassed about the way I looked, that I left before completing my shopping, lol!

    • Isabella Muse

aw shucks thanks Violet! Agreed 100%! makeup can do wonders! It is fun for Holidays sometimes but lord I’d rather a shimmery shadow than a big chunky glitter shadow! Awwww you poor dear! Glitter is so messy! Not to mention dangerous for our eyes!

    • Isabella Muse

omg I wish LOL! I was drinking tea and spit it out when I read that ;-D DAY MADE!

      • kellly

Nice to know you drink tea, too. Most people in the US drink coffee and sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who prefers tea!

        • Isabella Muse

I hate coffee. I’ll drink a rare macchiato but it’s really rare! I def am a tea drinker with you ;D

    • Jane

Stef is right though – I was trying to pinpoint who you reminded me of (you look like a different person in the different light and with the different angle) and that’s who!

Glitter can GTH, in all forms. Most of it isn’t biodegradable and is just more plastic pollution.

I can’t even do shimmery eyeshadow. Primer or no, it migrates around my face. I think the finish looks better generally, but I look like a child wearing it.

And palettes, especially orange and coral and sunset colored ones can just goooooo far away. It’s been years, makeup companies. Years.

      • Isabella Muse

I dunno I don’t see it but thanks 🙂 my ego feels properly stroked! ;D I do so love shimmer but I understand the fall put can be a nightmare ;-D Ohhh don’t hate me but I love all the orange and coral stuff ;-D I’m a sucker for those shades!

        • Jane

I can’t hate you, Muse. I’ve been reading your blog too many years to hate you! I know there are a heck ton of people who like warms, I’m just not one of them, and it has been years so I figure it has to come around eventually to something I can wear.

  • N

I say do what makes you happy and don’t worry about what others are doing. I haven’t worn makeup, except mascara, a little brow pencil, and under eye concealer, since last March and my skin has improved so much without changing anything in my skincare routine. My pores look better, it is clear, and the KP on my cheeks are gone. I’ve never gone so long without makeup since I was 16 years old. It is interesting to see the positive changes and now I am hesitant to start wearing makeup it again.

  • Evie

I wear contact lenses and suffer from dry eyes from time to time. As a result my eyes are sensitive. The last time I wore anything glittery was in the late 1990s when I picked up an Urban Decay eyeshadow palette. Some of the glitter fell into my eyes, and I developed an allergic reaction. I had to buy prescription steroid eye drops to alleviate the swelling. I can’t imagine I’m the only person who has a problem with excess glitter. For MAC to release this horrid product, tells me that the company is out of ideas and desperate. I saw this announcement in my email his morning and I thought it was a joke.

    • Isabella Muse

I can’t believe they thought an entire glitter eyeshadow palette was a good idea!

  • Robin Hawkins

I agree with the comment about you’re favoring Vanessa Hudgens. I am fairly new to your blog and I have only seen pics of you at angles. Beautiful! Ok,I am not about the glitter on my eyes or anywhere else. I do enjoy shimmers because I get bored with matte shadows sometimes. I am 62 and can sympathize with th e woman who was talked into the glitter. I wish they would stop already and move on. Thank you for all the work you put in to keep us informed about new releases etc,. Nobody does it like you. Happy New Year..

    • Isabella Muse

Gosh you guys are too kind! I don’t see that at all! but thank you! xoxoxoxo! Amen! Glitter just needs to go away! Totally love shimmer but no on the glitter! aw thank you Robin that means so so so much to me!

  • Savannah

I said the same thing when I saw this release! I’m tired of seeing glitter everywhere. It really doesn’t look as good as people seem to think it does, plus it’s a hell nope for sensitive eyes.

  • Lexi

    Agreed! Ugh!

Also wanted to comment on how beautiful you look in that photo! Gorgeous! And with no makeup! It’s not fair 🙂

I did the same this year, ended up enjoying wearing makeup more.

    • Isabella Muse

omg my ego is gonna get all blown up you’re way too kind! I am NOT gorgeous but thanks Lexi! 🙂 I took a lot of comfort in my makeup this year!

  • Randi Macdonald

I think this is the first pic I’ve ever seen of you with your hair down and no makeup. You’re so pretty. Your skin is fab. I also said “WTF” when I saw that glitter palette. I expect it to end up at TJ Maxx in a year. I also wore makeup daily, it made me feel much better and I love makeup and want to use up what I have.

    • Isabella Muse

oh there’s lots of them hanging out in my instagram account! You are WAYYY too kind 🙂 thanks girl! 🙂 a year? Less than a year if I place bets lol!

  • kel b.

so did u stock up on any after xmas makeup/product sales? i’ve been wanting to know! i but another yog nog body wash and lotion, and some lush bath bombs for 50% off. also got some pine candles, soaps and plug ins from b&bw (tho their sale wasn’t so great, maybe coz i did it online).

    • Isabella Muse

I didn’t! EEP! I got everything before the sale because I was worried it would sell out!

  • Mandy

OMG! I also thought you looked like Vanessa Hudgens. I never comment, but I love your blog:) I also HATE glitter in my eyeshadow.

  • jill

not gonna lie. i love my bling. i agree that the chunky glitters need to get lost, but give me my pat mcgrath and my stila all day and all night.

    i think it’s an old-lady thing.

    jill

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Jill! Happy Holidays miss! 🙂 Hope you’re well! I love me some shimmer but a big nope on the glitter but Stila gets the exception hehe ;D

  • Courtney

I love eye safe mica that appears to look like glitter on the lid, but without any of the potentially damaging sharp edges. I won’t wear chunky glitter on my lids because I’m scared to scratch my cornea. Give me duochromes and sparkles, but without plastic!

I would say the one beauty trend I want to see die in a fire and never come back is jar packaging for skin care. I love my skin care but I’m so frustrated at trying to find a night cream, a day cream and an eye cream that has all the ingredients I love, but doesn’t come in a jar. Jars gross me out. Yes I can use a little scoop each time I open it, but I’d rather have an airless pump design. My daytime moisturizer I love is the Bliss Ex-Glow-Sion moisturizer, which is wonderful but I hate the tacky jar it comes in and it needs a pump! My favorite StriVectin Hyaluronic Tri-Peptide Eye Cream comes in a stupid jar, too, when an airless pump or a tube would be much more convenient. I wish skin care companies would ditch the jar in favor of useful packaging that protects the ingredients and makes it more convenient to use.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m all for mica but glitter nooooo! Yes on jar packaging! It’ll never happen but I totally call for no more jar packaging ;-D They make more money off us with jar packaging because it goes bad before we can use it lol!

  • MDW

The powder eyeshadow is the cheapest for cosmetics manufacturers to produce. So the companies are pushing it on the unsuspecting. Then the advertisements on the surgically lifted eyelids young models using the highest skilled makeup artists.

A UK YouTube makeup artist said the same thing about eyeshadow palette insanity.

  • Ginger

Agree with the No on glitter, also enough of the heavily drawed brows and over the top contouring…its looks horrible.

  • Claudette

You look gorgeous! Fresh youthful face and pore less skin. It’s good to be a skin care junkie.
Almost ten months being home and I haven’t worn any of my makeup.
I agree, NO to glitter eyeshadow. I played around with it in the beginning but it got all over my
eyelashes and being a woman of a certain age, I looked ridiculous.
The other trend I’d like to see gone is women putting highlight on the tips of their nose.
Just because everyone with a YouTube account does it doesn’t mean it looks good. Lol

  • Beth

Preach! Glitter needs to go! Frankly, I’m not crazy about shimmers due to my age….but I understand younger gals using shimmers. I wish there were more mattes, but then the cosmetics industry isn’t interested in anyone over 40, unless it’s to push expensive creams or surgery. Clothing is an issue too, but that’s another rant for another day.

    • Isabella Muse

I still love shimmer but glitter just needs to go away and die a fast death!

  • Vivianne

You look great Isabella! We need to see more of this hair down business lol. Also, Chibis are absolutely adorable ^_^

As a contact lens wearer, I avoid glitter at all costs. However, for those who don’t wear contacts, I don’t see that ingredient as being safe for the eyes. Something about the texture or “chunks” kind of irks me. I love shimmer but glitter, nah.

Have a safe and Happy New Year Isabella!

  • kellly

I love shiny, sparkly shadow, but actual glitter is a step too far even for me. Maybe for New Year’s Eve but I can’t think of any other occasion where it wouldn’t feel too crazy for me. I love shiny shadows and wish that instead of going 90% lipsticks, companies would bring out more eye shadow lines. I don’t like many palettes because the colors are frequently much darker than what I’m comfortable wearing so maybe one or two colors in the palette would work for me. Companies used to have shadow singles but lately they are mostly about palettes and I don’t need to spend $40+ to get two or maybe three new eye shadow colors.
I’m hoping with the pandemic and masks being worn everywhere that companies will take the hint and maybe put a little more attention to eye makeup.

  • Paula A Hartman

I love the look of glitter but refuse to wear it because of the fall-out.

I also want to chime in and say how lovely you look in that photo. I think that’s the first non-angled shot I’ve seen. I can see the Vanessa Hudgens resemblance.
