What’s the One Makeup Technique You Wish You Can Master?

Do you have any makeup techniques you wish you can master? There are so many makeup techniques I wish I can master! I always wish I can do a winged eyeliner look better! I also wish I can wear a winged eyeliner look without looking like I’m playing with my mom’s makeup! I always feel like if I wear eyeshadow plus a lot of eyeliner that I look like I got caught playing in my mom’s makeup or something!

I’ve been doing this blog for ages and my makeup skills are still pretty much the same as they were when I started. I just don’t have the gift of application that some people have! I’m always constantly amazing at how well some people blend! It makes me cringe when I’m blending my own eyeshadows and they go all muddy! Everyone makes it look so very easy but I don’t think it’s easy at all!

One of the makeup techniques I really wish I can master is the gradient eyeshadow effect. I always watch these Asian bloggers and youTubers create these perfect eye looks by simply piling colors up and it comes out so perfect. It never works for me! I always end up with mud. I watched a girl apply a peachy eyeshadow all over her lid yesterday and she layered brown on top of it and somehow did some magically blending so the brown looked like it just blend into the peach. It was such a gorgeous effect. I tried it and all I got was a brown eyeshadow look.

I’m every always practicing but I don’t think I’m cut out for being a makeup artist anytime soon 🙂

How about you?

What’s one makeup technique you really wish you could master but have a hard time with?

Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I actually have two. I’m with you on the first one as I have so many palettes and I wish I could use more than 1 color or 2 (1 light 1 dark)to blend and create these great looks. I get so jealous when I see these great eye looks swatching new palettes and I can’t duplicate. My second would be liquid eyeliner
I’ve tried creating little dots and connecting them, I’ve tried everything and I end up with a very thick line that extends way above the base of my eyelid. BUT I still LOVE makeup and I LOVE color!

Same same! I’ll watch videos where people use like twenty shades in one look! I can’t! I’m an idiot I just can’t do that many shades in a single look! So jealous! Same on liquid liner! I’m utterly sucky at application.

In those videos, they are either speeded up or they are 20 minutes long. If you have hours to practice every day and then 45 minutes to do your makeup I’m sure your blending and shading skills would improve. I’m the same as you – I wish I had more time/better skills but life has its demands and if it’s either spend an hour to get ready or to spend 10 minutes putting enough makeup on to look presentable and not scare the children, I’m going with the latter.

In my opinion, the gradient technique looks betters and more obvious on flatter eyeshapes (hence popular with East and SE Asian people who often have those features). When you have rounder eyes, all the curves create shadows and highlights, which I think end up masking the gradient a bit. .

I wish I was better at cut-creases. It’s so much harder when you have some lid but not a whole lot of lid. LOL!

I think you’re right. It seems to be best on flatter eyes or even hooded sometimes! Cut crease is whole other level for me lol!

I wish I can do contour and blush placement better! As for eyeshadow gradual look, have you try the Sigma e41 brush? That was game changer for me. I love using it for my outer crease to round my look. People think I was on top of my eyeshadow game because of it! Lol

I don’t really wanna do contouring better as it’s not something I do really but I’d love to do better blush! I always look like a clown! No I’ll have to go look it up thanks for the rec ;-D

Liquid eyeliner. Or just winged eyeliner. Can’t do it. I’ve gone through phases of trying and practicing since 2005 and I haven’t gotten any better lol.

I’m with you there! Brows are still hard for me especially when I can’t get the symmetry right.

Perfected skin. Like Lisa Eldridge’s style of perfected skin. I mean my skin’s decent, but sometimes I’d just like to look perfect? Anyway I can always see that my concealer is just a bit too (dark, pale, oxidized) the powder is too thick, my oil is shining through.

My eyes are different in that one is a little more hooded than the other so I wish I could master the technique of getting them both to look the same applying eye shadow. It’s interesting because I don’t think anyone else notices our issues but they seem to jump out at us, don’t they?

I’m 52 years old and I still can’t figure out how to put on eye shadow. Even after watching tutorials, my eyes never turn out the same. But I’ve decided who cares if I get it wrong?? I’m going for it!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL Sally that’s the spirit my dear! Same here! I’ve been doing it for ages and still haven’t mastered it but I don’t care! I have fun with it and that’s all that matters!

I love ur honesty Muse. I too have been a follower of ur blog for a good 5-6 years & although my hunger for new products & trying new things all the time get the best of me sometimes especially my wallet all & all my makeup application techniques remain the same. I have deep set eyes & every time I try to try a new idea, from pinterest or a magazine it ends up looking like I’m going to a night club. Blending is key for multiple colors used on the eyelid. However there is definitely a fine line for over doing it. Sometimes though its the simple looks that look best. But I’m a simple girl from Iowa. I like to admire all the talented new looks each season , but every time I try to duplicate I end up having to tone it way down for work.
